Controlling High Blood Pressure, Heather M. Tatusko Apr 2023

Controlling High Blood Pressure, Heather M. Tatusko

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

High blood pressure (HBP), also known as Hypertension (HTN), is a common diagnosis for primary care office visits in the United States; however, a persistent gap remains between the stated public health targets and achieved blood pressure (BP) control rates in the United States (US). In a small sample of patients with essential HTN (ICD 10: I10) receiving primary care at a mid-western Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), a chart audit tool revealed 10 out of 10 patients achieved BP control during the measurement period (defined as a BP reading <140/90). Quality improvement (QI) analysis revealed the bigger picture: Achieved BP control rates of patients does not reflect the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association HBP guidelines. Additionally, the author found potential care gaps for patients in elevated BP (120-129/>80; n=34) and Stage 1 HTN (130-139/80-89; n=44) categories (who …

Developmental Changes In Electrophysiological Properties Of Auditory Cortical Neurons In The Cntnap2 Knockout Rat, Rajkamalpreet S Mann, Brian L Allman, Susanne Schmid Apr 2023

Developmental Changes In Electrophysiological Properties Of Auditory Cortical Neurons In The Cntnap2 Knockout Rat, Rajkamalpreet S Mann, Brian L Allman, Susanne Schmid

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Disruptions in the CNTNAP2 gene are known to cause language impairments and symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Importantly, knocking out this gene in rodents results in ASD-like symptoms that include auditory processing deficits. This study used in vitro patch-clamp electrophysiology to examine developmental alterations in auditory cortex pyramidal neurons of Cntnap2-/- rats, hypothesizing that CNTNAP2 is essential for maintaining intrinsic neuronal properties and synaptic wiring in the developing auditory cortex. Whole cell patch-clamp recordings were conducted in wildtype and Cntnap2-/- littermates at three postnatal age ranges (P8-12, P18-21, and …

Luck Egalitarianism And Non-Overlapping Generations, Elizabeth Finneron-Burns Apr 2023

Luck Egalitarianism And Non-Overlapping Generations, Elizabeth Finneron-Burns

Political Science Publications

This paper argues that there are good reasons to limit the scope of luck egalitarianism to co-existing people. First, I outline reasons to be sceptical about how “luck” works intergenerationally and therefore the very grounding of luck egalitarianism between non-overlapping generations. Second, I argue that what Kasper Lippert-Rasmussen calls the “core luck egalitarian claim” allows significant intergenerational inequality which is a problem for those who object to such inequality. Third, luck egalitarianism cannot accommodate the intuition that it might be required to leave future generations better off than we are, even if it would come at no cost to ourselves. …

Crosswords As An Educational Tool, Nicole Lippay Apr 2023

Crosswords As An Educational Tool, Nicole Lippay

Final Projects Winter 2023

Crossword puzzles have been used in the classroom as tools to help students synthesize information. This is particularly well-researched in medical school capacities, where students have to learn a significant amount of precise terminology, and quickly but often lack the opportunity to practice and reinforce key concepts (Saxena et al, 2009). Crosswords offer the opportunity for active learning, problem solving and critical thinking (Kolte et al, 2017). In the Library Information Science (LIS) field, there's an opportunity to study how crosswords might be effective learning tools, particularly in the area of cataloging.

The Bibliographic Description Of The Book Of Mormon And The Bible, James Dosdall Apr 2023

The Bibliographic Description Of The Book Of Mormon And The Bible, James Dosdall

Final Projects Winter 2023

Classification is a notoriously messy business that requires compromises and rarely has clear-cut answers, but nowhere is this more evident than in the field of religious texts. Sacred religious texts such as the Bible have been through more iterations than can be counted. They are used by different communities in different ways. What some communities view as mythology, others view as historical fact. Placing such complex, living texts into stagnant, neat boxes can be almost impossible. The field of religion is also historically burdened by bias, and the DDC in particular has a notoriously unbalanced representation of religion, with Christianity …

Comparing Toronto Public Library's Kanopy Service With Traditional Classification And Subject Access Tools, Weihao Zhu Apr 2023

Comparing Toronto Public Library's Kanopy Service With Traditional Classification And Subject Access Tools, Weihao Zhu

Final Projects Winter 2023

The ongoing transformation of libraries in the digital age is marked by the adoption of new technologies and innovative services to cater to the evolving needs of users. One such example is the integration of streaming platforms like Kanopy into library systems, offering a convenient and user-friendly experience to patrons. The Toronto Public Library (TPL) has adopted Kanopy to provide its users with access to a diverse range of films and documentaries, effectively bridging the gap between traditional library classification and subject access tools, and modern streaming services (Digital Library Services, n.d.). This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of …

Making A Change: An Exploration Into How Children Search, Sarah-Ann Shearer Apr 2023

Making A Change: An Exploration Into How Children Search, Sarah-Ann Shearer

Final Projects Winter 2023

The standard classification systems of Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress Subject Headings have been used in libraries around the world and people must learn how these systems work in order to search and find the materials they are looking for. For those untrained or unfamiliar with these systems, it can be quite confusing as the organization system follows a very particular set of rules and guidelines. Not only this, but searching for materials in these systems also requires a specific set of language competency skills. Having the skills necessary to consult a database and search is a key element …

A Guide To Understanding & Using Folksonomies, Puneet Sekhon Apr 2023

A Guide To Understanding & Using Folksonomies, Puneet Sekhon

Final Projects Winter 2023

In the digital landscape, social media and social platforms have become predominant communication tools in the wider context of Web 2.0. Folksonomies stem from user created metadata that popularized with the evolution of the world wide web in the late 1990s through link-focused websites called weblogs (Spiteri, 2006). Overtime metadata evolved to include tagging, also known as social tagging, hash tagging, and collaborative tagging (Ruslan, 2018). For the final project, I chose to focus on creating an instructional guide that introduced average social media users to the concept of folksonomies. The guide also touches on the specific characteristics of folksonomies …

The lesson includes a detailed lesson plan with reference to learning objectives, directions, assessment and potential challenges as well as materials for both the instructor and students to support the lesson. Ideally, students will leave the lesson with a firm grasp on how to classify using the DDC as assessed through …

Revisiting The Defence Of Diminished Responsibility, Andrew Botterell Apr 2023

Revisiting The Defence Of Diminished Responsibility, Andrew Botterell

Law Publications

My goal in this article is to revisit the defence of diminished responsibility. There are three things that, taken together, suggest to me that a defence of diminished responsibility ought to be made available to certain individuals accused of certain criminal offences. The first is that Canadian criminal law already recognizes a number of defences that reflect ideas about diminished responsibility. The second is that despite the availability of these specific defences to criminal liability, no general defence of diminished responsibility is formally recognized in Canadian criminal law. And the third is that given the Supreme Court of Canada’s ongoing …

Algorithms And Mathematics Education A Response And Review Of Hannah Fry’S Hello World: Being Human In The Age Of Algorithms, Joshua T. Hertel Apr 2023

Algorithms And Mathematics Education A Response And Review Of Hannah Fry’S Hello World: Being Human In The Age Of Algorithms, Joshua T. Hertel

The Mathematics Enthusiast

At the outset, Dr. Hannah Fry’s book Hello World: Being Human in the Age of Algorithms is an engaging survey of how algorithms are being used in modern life. The book is written for a general audience with a focus on concepts and principles. As such, the narrative does not dig deeply into the details of any particular topic but instead offers a snapshot of how algorithms reside within a variety of contexts in the modern world. Through relatable examples, Dr. Fry builds a narrative that explains how algorithms are used as tools to predict, influence, augment, and mimic human …

Uncertainty In An Uncertain World A Review Of Ian Stewart’S Do Dice Play God?: The Mathematics Of Uncertainty, Luis Saldanha Apr 2023

Uncertainty In An Uncertain World A Review Of Ian Stewart’S Do Dice Play God?: The Mathematics Of Uncertainty, Luis Saldanha

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In addition to the title’s cheeky play on the famous words God does not play dice with the universe (famously attributed to Einstein), Ian Stewart’s Do Dice Play God is a fascinating tour de force that embeds the discipline of statistics and probability within an informative and insightful socio-historical account of its development. Stewart characterizes the science of statistics and probability as the mathematical quantification of uncertainty—a very useful and productive way to think about a discipline with a reputation for being notoriously difficult and often counter-intuitive for people to understand. But his account goes beyond merely providing such an …

Popularizing Mathematics Education Through Bad Drawings A Review Of Ben Orlin’S Math With Bad Drawings, Nat Banting, Ryan Banow, Egan Chernoff Apr 2023

Popularizing Mathematics Education Through Bad Drawings A Review Of Ben Orlin’S Math With Bad Drawings, Nat Banting, Ryan Banow, Egan Chernoff

The Mathematics Enthusiast

From cover to cover, Ben Orlin’s Math with Bad Drawings is modest. By this we do not mean to suggest that the book underwhelms in its contributions to the popularization of mathematics. In fact, we take the exact opposite as true, and the commendations from prominent popularizers of mathematics such as Steven Strogatz, Hannah Fry, and John Urschel that are printed on the book jacket provide us ample evidence. By modest we mean the book cloaks its potent insights on mathematics and mathematics education in self-effacement. Of course, this modesty is entirely intentional, and employed by Orlin with pinpoint precision. …

Screaming For Love: An Analysis Of The Horror Film Industry Through The Lens Of The Six Love Styles Theory, Emilee Mcqueen

Honors Theses

This research focuses on the influential nature of the horror film industry on its typical young viewers in the realm of romance. An analysis of five films was done through the lens of John Alan Lee’s Six Love Styles theory. The results were used to determine if the typical horror films present healthy or unhealthy relationships. The importance of the findings is discussed, with an emphasis on the idea that parents and older viewers can use this study as a springboard to start typically difficult conversations about romance with teens and young adults.

Financial Advisory Firm: Mark's Financial Solutions, Mark Y. Foruria

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This business plan project provides research on financial advisor firms, financial education and literacy and money management in American society. There are numerous tools and resources available to become financially independent and literate. The problem is that all this information does not reach the communities that need them the most (low-income), especially the youth because it is not taught in school. To address the financial illiteracy issue among the American population I created a business plan, offering the financial services the people need most. At the same time, I created this capstone project doing some research on people's financial health …

Opioid-Crisis Intervention: A Pilot To Moderate Patient’S Use Of Post-Operative Opioid Medications Using A Video-Based Perioperative Education Tool, Ahmed Alshaarawi

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Problem Description

The opioid epidemic has been ravishing communities in the United States for nearly two decades, resulting in opioid misuse, dependence, and overdose-related deaths. Healthcare providers have inadvertently fueled the epidemic by overprescribing opioid medications contributing to 40% of the opioid overdose-related deaths. One in every 48 patients who receives an opioid medication for the first time will become a chronic user of these medications. Furthermore, 6% of all surgical patients will continue chronic use of opioid medications 90 days after their surgeries regardless of absence of pain. With over 50 million surgical cases performed each year in the …

Transformational Leadership And Structural Empowerment For Nurse Managers To Improve Nursing Job Satisfaction, Engagement, And Retention, Leah M. Gehri Apr 2023

Transformational Leadership And Structural Empowerment For Nurse Managers To Improve Nursing Job Satisfaction, Engagement, And Retention, Leah M. Gehri

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Problem Description

Low nurse job satisfaction and engagement have historically been associated with high attrition. While it is too soon to fully quantify the impact of Covid-19 on nurse satisfaction, engagement, and turnover, evidence is emerging that high chronic fatigue and persistent feelings of being overwhelmed are causing nurses to either leave the bedside or quit nursing altogether, exacerbating existing nurse staffing challenges caused by a decades long nursing shortage that, pre-pandemic, predicted a national deficit of over one-half million nurses by 2030. The financial impact of competing for experienced nurses, and recruiting, hiring, and training new nurses to replace …

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Pathogenic structural genetic variants, also known as genomic disorders, have been associated with pediatric CKD. This study extends those results across the lifespan, with genomic disorders enriched in both pediatric and adult patients compared with controls. In the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort study, genomic disorders were also associated with lower serum Mg, lower educational performance, and a higher risk of death. A phenome-wide association study confirmed the link between kidney disease and genomic disorders in an unbiased way. Systematic detection of genomic disorders can provide a molecular diagnosis and refine prediction of risk and prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Genomic disorders …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

OBJECTIVE: To examine authorship gender distributions before and during COVID-19 in the Journal of Perinatology.

STUDY DESIGN: We collected data from the Journal of Perinatology website. The author gender was determined using Genderize.io or a systematic internet search. Our primary outcome was the difference between the number of published articles authored by women during the pandemic period (March 2020-May 2021, period two), compared with the preceding 15-month period (period one). We analyzed the data using chi-square tests.

RESULTS: Publications increased from period one to two by 8.9%. There were slightly more female than male first (62%) and overall (53%) authors, …
