Diplomacy Syllabi

This course combines a thematic and case study approach to peace operations and their role in maintaining peace and security in the world. We will look at UN and non-UN peace operations, broadly defined to include peacekeeping, peace enforcement and post-conflict peacebuilding. We begin with an introduction to some fundamentals: theories about the nature of conflict; the UN Charter framework; and the types of peace operations. We then explore selected case studies of missions since the end of the Cold War to draw out common themes and to familiarize students with the evolving nature of peace operations. We weave in …

Liquefaction Triggering In Low-Plasticity Silts And Effects Of Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spreading On A Reinforced-Concrete Pile, Jared A. Martinez Apr 2023

Liquefaction Triggering In Low-Plasticity Silts And Effects Of Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spreading On A Reinforced-Concrete Pile, Jared A. Martinez

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Liquefaction triggering and post-liquefaction effects on lateral loading of deep foundations is an emerging area of study. This project presents: the results of cyclic direct simple shear (CDSS) testing on a low-plasticity alluvial silt collected in Portland, Oregon; and analysis of the combined effects of liquefaction-induced lateral spreading on a reinforced-concrete pile using data collected from a shake table test. The former research determines the liquefaction susceptibility and post-liquefaction characteristics of a local transitional soil using stress-controlled CDSS testing, the latter explores the complex lateral loading a reinforced-concrete pile undergoes during seismic loading with liquefaction-induced lateral spreading of the ground …

Ce-Qual-W2 Performance Assessment Modeling 1979 Grh Flume Study, Logan Negherbon Apr 2023

Ce-Qual-W2 Performance Assessment Modeling 1979 Grh Flume Study, Logan Negherbon

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

In an early review of numerical reservoir hydrodynamic models, the US Army Corps of Engineers developed a physical model at the US Army Waterways Experiment Station to assess the performance of modeling cold water underflow with numerous 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic models. Within this effort, the precursor for CE-QUAL-W2, the Laterally Averaged Reservoir Model, was defined and applied with limited success in representing the vertical velocity profile and outflow temperatures series collected from the physical model in the General Reservoir Hydrodynamics flume. CE-QUAL-W2 has since been modified from this early form in numerous ways including incorporation of higher order …

An Ethnographic Study Of Student Eating Habits At Parkland, Jordan Goodhart, Aaron Triplett, Tyler Thomas, Logan Haake, Prechethan Kesireddy Apr 2023

An Ethnographic Study Of Student Eating Habits At Parkland, Jordan Goodhart, Aaron Triplett, Tyler Thomas, Logan Haake, Prechethan Kesireddy

Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life

Our research question was broad as we chose to examine the eating habits of Parkland students and how it may affect their performance in the classroom. We also chose to focus on how Parkland students’ eating/snacking habits have changed since being at Parkland compared to high school or wherever they snacked before becoming college students. From our cultural anthropology course, we understand that food and eating habits are part of the “everyday actions that reflect cultural ideas” and can be studied to define the identity of a group (Miller Griffith and Marion 2020). Our research will reflect part of the …

Evaluating The Enzymatic Activity Of Transformed X. Cucurbitae, Emily Beger, Iris Lee, Sarah Hind Apr 2023

Evaluating The Enzymatic Activity Of Transformed X. Cucurbitae, Emily Beger, Iris Lee, Sarah Hind

PRECS student projects

Introduction

  • The United States’ pumpkin industry exceeds one billion dollars [1], with Illinois contributing to over 90% of processing pumpkin production.
  • Pumpkin growers face a rising concern due to the increasing occurrence of Xanthomonas cucurbitae , the pathogen that causes bacterial spot disease in cucurbits, including pumpkins.
  • X. cucurbitae infection leads to the appearance of small, sunken, beige spots on cucurbit fruits and leaves.
  • Over time, the bacterium can compromise fruit integrity by breaking down the epidermis and cuticle. • Bacterial spot disease also creates opportunities for other bacteria and fungi to infiltrate the affected fruits, leading to fruit rot …

Ex-Ante Regulation In Digital Markets In India: Some Practical Considerations, Gaurav Ghosh, Subhashish Gupta

Working Papers

Countries around the world have been perturbed by the business practices of big-tech firms, notably GAFA. Concerns have been raised about (i) fairness, (ii) contestability, (iii) innovation and (iv) transparency. Several countries have felt that they could no longer rely on standard usage of competition law which acts ex-post. They have felt the need to implement some form of ex-ante regulation to procatively address these concerns. Practices that have come under the radar include (i) self-preferencing, (ii) tying and bundling and (iii) Most Favoured Nation (MFN) clauses and across-platform parity agreements. There are also prescriptions on data portability, access and …

Food, Fuel, And Facts: Distributional Effects Of Global Price Shocks, Saroj Bhattarai, Arpita Chatterjee, Gautham Udupa Apr 2023

Food, Fuel, And Facts: Distributional Effects Of Global Price Shocks, Saroj Bhattarai, Arpita Chatterjee, Gautham Udupa

Working Papers

We show that global commodity price shocks lead to a significant decline over time in Indian household consumption. These negative effects are heterogeneous along the income distribution: households in lower income deciles experience more adverse consumption effects following an exogenous rise in food prices, whereas households in both the lower and the middle income deciles are affected similarly following an exogenous rise in oil prices. We investigate how income and relative price changes contribute to generating these heterogeneous consumption effects. Global food price shocks lead to significant negative real earnings effects that mirror the pattern of negative consumption effects along …

A Critical Success Factor Approach To Address Telemedicine Implementation Challenges: A Longitudinal Study, Spurthy Dharanikota Apr 2023

A Critical Success Factor Approach To Address Telemedicine Implementation Challenges: A Longitudinal Study, Spurthy Dharanikota

Working Papers

The lack of understanding of what is truly critical to the success of emerging health services innovations may result in the failure of those innovative projects. This is particularly true in the case of HIT innovations struggling for reimbursement recognition, willing early adopters, and attention of over-extended IT departments. With the help of a seven-year longitudinal case study, we use empirically rooted critical success factors (CSF) framing to explore and identify the key facilitators and interim outcomes associated with the implementation of telemedicine in the form of a telestroke extension to a hospital network and how these CSFs in turn …

Return Anomalies, Disagreement, And Trading Volume, Sankarshan Basu, Srinivasan Rangan, Nikhil Vidhani Apr 2023

Return Anomalies, Disagreement, And Trading Volume, Sankarshan Basu, Srinivasan Rangan, Nikhil Vidhani

Working Papers

We propose a new measure of investor disagreement based on thirty-nine factors from the return-predicting anomaly literature. Consistent with theoretical work on volume, we show that a one standard deviation change in anomaly-based disagreement is associated with a 16.7% higher turnover in the next period. Disagreement effects on volume are stronger for firms with more complex information releases and weaken after the exogenous introduction of the SEC EDGAR filing system. Anomaly-based disagreement also relates positively to analysts’ forecast dispersion and absolute forecast errors in earnings and target prices suggesting that it influences their behavior.

Bankruptcy Exemption Of Repo Markets: Too Much Today For Too Little Tomorrow?, Viral V Acharya, V Ravi Anshuman, S Viswanathan Apr 2023

Bankruptcy Exemption Of Repo Markets: Too Much Today For Too Little Tomorrow?, Viral V Acharya, V Ravi Anshuman, S Viswanathan

Working Papers

We examine the desirability of granting “safe harbor” provisions to the sale and repurchase (repo) markets, i.e., granting repo contracts exemption from automatic stay in bankruptcy. Such exemption can enable financial intermediaries to raise greater liquidity and operate at higher leverage in normal times. This liquidity creation occurs, however, at the cost of ex-post inefficiency when there are adverse aggregate shocks to the fundamental quality of collateral underlying the contracts. When exempt from bankruptcy, creditors of highly leveraged financial intermediaries respond to such shocks by engaging in collateral liquidations. Financial arbitrage by less leveraged financial intermediaries equilibrates returns from acquiring …

Using Online Video Observations And Real Time, Peer Reflective Analysis Of Culturally Responsive Teaching Pedagogy In A University Teacher Preparatory Program For Preservice Teachers, Adrian E. Cortes

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This research aimed to understand the impacts of using online video observations and real-time peer reflection to teach and address culturally responsive teaching in a Pacific Northwest university’s teacher preparatory program. Six active university students enrolled in a university’s new teacher preparatory program (i.e., preservice, new teacher candidates) actively participated in all areas of this study (i.e., nonrandom sampling) and provided both quantitative and qualitative data. Study participants completed self-evaluative pre- and post-surveys in a research group session. Surveys were built using the ready 4 rigor framework (Hammond & Jackson, 2015) and the four areas of culturally responsive teaching as …

Surrogacy As A Means Of Survival, Emma Reyes Apr 2023

Surrogacy As A Means Of Survival, Emma Reyes

Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics

Surrogacy is an arrangement where a woman agrees to carry a baby on behalf of a couple, typically because they cannot have the baby on their own. This has especially become an increasingly common option for many same-sex couples to have a child. However, many countries have discriminative laws set in place that prohibit surrogates from conceiving a child for same-sex couples. As a result of this, different surrogate agencies have found loopholes to go around these laws. In the Radiolab podcast episode titled “Birthstory '', an Israeli couple who were forbade from hiring a surrogate in their own country, …

Preoperative Skin Preparation Protocol For Patients Undergoing Abdominal And Spinal Surgery, Lia Moyer Apr 2023

Preoperative Skin Preparation Protocol For Patients Undergoing Abdominal And Spinal Surgery, Lia Moyer

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects

Surgical site infections are an avoidable complication in surgical patients and one of the most common hospital-acquired infections. Adverse effects of surgical site infections include increased hospital length of stay, increased costs to patient and healthcare system, disability, morbidity, and mortality. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to design a protocol with the objective of decreasing surgical site infections in abdominal and spinal surgery patients. The protocol developed used targeted depilation and antisepsis with a chlorhexidine wipe to mitigate infection risk. Results of the project showed a static hospital length of stay, no increase in preoperative time, and …

Analysis Of Ssa4 Reporter Expression By Q-Pcr, Susveen Sharanshi, Rebecca Adams Apr 2023

Analysis Of Ssa4 Reporter Expression By Q-Pcr, Susveen Sharanshi, Rebecca Adams

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

The synthesis of genome-encoded proteins via mRNA translation is integral to cell survival. In eukaryotes, such as S. cerevisiae, the mRNA that is produced in the nucleus must be exported to the cytoplasm for translation to occur, and this process is highly regulated. Specifically, the export of mRNA occurs via travel through nuclear pore complexes (NPCs), which are selective doorways embedded in the nuclear envelope. During cellular stress, such as heat shock, the cell needs to regulate gene expression to permit survival, and mRNA export is one step at which this occurs. At these high temperatures, a cell’s proteins …

Accuracy Of Recollection Without Rehearsal, Carolyn Lowe, Jen Bui, Ella Marks, Maddie Rowe Apr 2023

Accuracy Of Recollection Without Rehearsal, Carolyn Lowe, Jen Bui, Ella Marks, Maddie Rowe

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Priming refers to the influence of encountered objects on future responses to similar objects (Wang et. al., 2003). Cross-modality priming occurs when the stimuli are presented in one modality and tested within another (Marinis, 2018). However, there is not much research done on verbal and visual cross-modality priming. This study looks at the effects of cross-modality implicit priming on recall and recognition. Participants read 8 different priming stories. After each, participants completed a visual memory task where they looked at a slide of several images for 5 seconds, and then wrote which images they remembered. After this, they answered 2 …

Ideology And The Incumbency Advantage, Gabe Degraeve Apr 2023

Ideology And The Incumbency Advantage, Gabe Degraeve

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Incumbents win reelection at a staggering rate (upwards of 75%) the causes of this are well understood and examined. The numerous material benefits (access to a larger staff, fundraising ability, name recognition, etc.) paired with the psychological benefits (scare-off effect, lack of high-quality candidate, etc.) make it very hard for a potential challenger to win in an election against an incumbent. There however has been a decrease in the incumbency advantage over the past several election cycles. Since both the material and psychological benefits are still present, another factor is likely contributing to this decrease. Ideology has become …

Relationship Between Quality Time, Conscientiousness, And Relationship Satisfaction, Lindsey Edwards, Gavin Mitchell, Talaia Goodman, Emily Cloud, Max Blessinger Apr 2023

Relationship Between Quality Time, Conscientiousness, And Relationship Satisfaction, Lindsey Edwards, Gavin Mitchell, Talaia Goodman, Emily Cloud, Max Blessinger

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Relationships are challenging, but can the key to relationship satisfaction boil down to understanding your partner's expression of love or simply spending more time together? Quality time, one of the five love languages, has been found to be the most common love language (Mostova et al., 2022). The love language of quality time has previously been associated with higher levels of conscientiousness, a big five personality trait positively correlated with feelings of love, intimacy, and passion (Surijah & Sari, 2018; Engel et al., 2002). The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between levels of conscientiousness and …

Spanish Communication As A Campaign Tool: Confrontando La Nueva Realidad Del Pueblo Estadounidense, Aaron Kleinschmidt Apr 2023

Spanish Communication As A Campaign Tool: Confrontando La Nueva Realidad Del Pueblo Estadounidense, Aaron Kleinschmidt

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

How does the Spanish language affect the American electoral landscape? As the Spanish-speaking populace grows, candidates utilize the language to appeal to a wider range of voters, leveraging new media in a bilingual capacity to improve their electoral odds. While one might imagine that all high-profile candidates would be quick to communicate in Spanish, many failed to do so in the 2022 midterm elections. This paper argues that Spanish use, particularly in online campaign media, is positively related to candidates’ electoral performance. However, a distinction between the Latino population and the greater population is anticipated, with Latino voters responding more …
