Data-Driven Methodologies And Applications In Urban Mobility, Huan H. Ngo Apr 2023

Data-Driven Methodologies And Applications In Urban Mobility, Huan H. Ngo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The world is urbanizing at an unprecedented rate where urbanization goes from 39% in 1980 to 58% in 2019 (World Bank, 2019). This poses more and more transportation demand and pressure on the already at or over-capacity old transport infrastructure, especially in urban areas. Along the same timeline, more data generated as a byproduct of daily activity are being collected via the advancement of the internet of things, and computers are getting more and more powerful. These are shown by the statistics such as 90% of the world’s data is generated within the last two years and IBM’s computer is …

Factors Associated With Exits To Permanency And Length Of Stay Among Youth In Out-Of-Home Care, Walter Andrew Meyer Apr 2023

Factors Associated With Exits To Permanency And Length Of Stay Among Youth In Out-Of-Home Care, Walter Andrew Meyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In 2019, only about one-quarter of Tennessee children in out-of-home placements exited care to permanent living situations. This study examined factors associated with those permanent exits and with the amount of time spent in out-of-home placements. Utilizing a sample of 3,499 episodes of care (representing 3,173 unique children and youth) from a statewide, private provider of services, the following questions were addressed through multilevel modeling: Which factors are associated with exits to permanency within 12 months of entry into out-of-home care? Which factors are associated with the amount of time a child spends in care? Do these associations vary by …

China’S Future Military Capabilities, Roger Cliff

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The 2022 National Defense Strategy of the United States of America identifies China as the “pacing challenge” for the US military. This monograph examines the process by which China’s military capabilities are developed, the capabilities China’s military is seeking to acquire in the future, and the resulting implications for the US military. To date, all the extant studies have merely described the capabilities the People’s Liberation Army is currently acquiring. This monograph goes further by drawing on the Chinese military’s publications to identify and discuss the capabilities the People’s Liberation Army seeks to acquire in the future. The monograph finds …

An Examination Of The Importance Of Academic Support Programs For Two-Year College Student-Athletes, Amanda J. Glaza Apr 2023

An Examination Of The Importance Of Academic Support Programs For Two-Year College Student-Athletes, Amanda J. Glaza

Masters Projects

Literature has shown that there are many positive practices in supporting community college student-athletes, but the sheer number of positive practices out there can be overwhelming and having a summary of practices could be helpful for academic advisors to properly serve this unique population. This is necessary as research has revealed that the number of academic advisors who feel equipped to support community college student-athletes is low. Community college student-athletes are a unique population, with a diverse variety of needs. This project examines intrusive academic advising, enrollment and eligibility requirements for community college student-athletes, tutorial services and peer academic mentoring. …

Exploring The Lived Experience Of International Students Of Color At Predominately White Institutions., Soheli Farzana Jony

Masters Projects

International students are essential to US higher education, bringing cultural, global, and economic growth to US institutions each year. Despite previous research explaining this population's adjustment barriers due to cultural and linguistic differences, this project paper investigated the lived experience of international students of color (ISC) in relation to racism, microaggression, sexism, classism, and linguicism that they experience in U.S. higher education. Thus, to fully understand the lived experience of international students of color in predominantly white institutions, four major tenets of critical race theory: racism is normal and not aberrational, white supremacy, counter storytelling, and intersectionality, were applied to …

Supporting The Pedagogical Development Of Graduate Teaching Assistants: A Self-Directed Approach, Katie Cwiakala Apr 2023

Supporting The Pedagogical Development Of Graduate Teaching Assistants: A Self-Directed Approach, Katie Cwiakala

Masters Projects

Despite increases in formal pedagogical training opportunities for graduate teaching assistants across institutions in recent decades, students participate in instructional roles with different levels of participation, experience, and autonomy in teaching. This project examines the existing professional development available to graduate teaching assistants, their self-reported needs, and provides a pedagogical development planning tool for graduate teaching assistants. The Pedagogical Development Plan for Graduate Teaching Assistants incorporates suggestions from reviewed literature, as well as andragogy theory (Knowles, 1980) and self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1982). The framework consists of a self-guided planning document tool and catalog of pedagogical development opportunities available to graduate …

The Twice Exceptional Learner Making The Classroom More Engaging For All, Josy Goodwin Apr 2023

The Twice Exceptional Learner Making The Classroom More Engaging For All, Josy Goodwin

Masters Projects

Around the world there is a population of our student bodies that are often missed within the educational world. These students are incredibly bright and could qualify as being labeled as gifted. However, these students often have a disability that impedes their gifts. This is the twice-exceptional or 2e population. As more research is being conducted to learn more about these students, it is time to begin exploring ways that teachers can help this student population through communication tools, student case studies, and project examples. All with the goal of providing a more inclusive, rigorous, and positive learning environment for …

Enhancing Institutional Support Through A First Year Transfer Experience Program, Jade E. Bowman Apr 2023

Enhancing Institutional Support Through A First Year Transfer Experience Program, Jade E. Bowman

Masters Projects

There is a great deal of literature revolving around the transfer student population. Many researchers argue that transfer students do not receive adequate attention and support within their first academic semester, considerably when transferring from a two-year to a four-year institution. In order to improve retention rates and overall persistence, postsecondary institutions need to prioritize transfer student initiatives for proper academic and social integration. This project aims to identify key components that impact the transfer process, while recognizing successful, adaptable interventions that can support the unique needs of the transfer student population. The design and implementation of a First Year …

Hica Toxin-Based Counterselection Marker For Allelic Exchange Mutations In Fusobacterium Nucleatum, Bibek Gc, Peng Zhou, Chenggang Wu Apr 2023

Hica Toxin-Based Counterselection Marker For Allelic Exchange Mutations In Fusobacterium Nucleatum, Bibek Gc, Peng Zhou, Chenggang Wu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The study of fusobacterial virulence factors has dramatically benefited from the creation of various genetic tools for DNA manipulation, including galK-based counterselection for in-frame deletion mutagenesis in Fusobacterium nucleatum, which was recently developed. However, this method requires a host lacking the galK gene, which is an inherent limitation. To circumvent this limitation, we explored the possibility of using the hicA gene that encodes a toxin consisting of a HicAB toxin-antitoxin module in Fusobacterium periodonticum as a new counterselective marker. Interestingly, the full-length hicA gene is not toxic in F. nucleatum, but a truncated hicA gene version lacking the first …

Effectors And Effects Of Arginine Methylation, Yalong Wang, Mark T Bedford Apr 2023

Effectors And Effects Of Arginine Methylation, Yalong Wang, Mark T Bedford

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Arginine methylation is a ubiquitous and relatively stable post-translational modification (PTM) that occurs in three types: monomethylarginine (MMA), asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA). Methylarginine marks are catalyzed by members of the protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) family of enzymes. Substrates for arginine methylation are found in most cellular compartments, with RNA-binding proteins forming the majority of PRMT targets. Arginine methylation often occurs in intrinsically disordered regions of proteins, which impacts biological processes like protein-protein interactions and phase separation, to modulate gene transcription, mRNA splicing and signal transduction. With regards to protein-protein interactions, the major 'readers' of methylarginine marks are …

Displacement And Replacement: The Political History Of David Duke, Patrick Buchanan, And Racial Resentment, Dylan Weir Apr 2023

Displacement And Replacement: The Political History Of David Duke, Patrick Buchanan, And Racial Resentment, Dylan Weir

Journal of Hate Studies

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, David Duke and Patrick Buchanan drew on long-running discourses about White replacement and displacement in their political campaigns. Duke, former leader of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, used White displacement fears to earn elected office in the Louisiana state legislature. He then ran for governor, senator, and president, but was thwarted in these campaigns partly thanks to Black voters. Duke’s presidential ambitions were also undercut by the journalist and television personality Patrick Buchanan, who coopted Duke’s message to seize his base. Despite trying several times, however, Buchanan was also unable to …

European Approaches To Stopping Islamophobia Are Inadequate: Lessons For Canadians Combating Anti-Muslim Racism And Hatred, Hassina Alizai Apr 2023

European Approaches To Stopping Islamophobia Are Inadequate: Lessons For Canadians Combating Anti-Muslim Racism And Hatred, Hassina Alizai

Journal of Hate Studies

The United Kingdom, France, and Spain have in common a large and growing Muslim population. The influx of immigrants and refugees has left many European states fearful of Muslim migrants because they perceive potential increases in terrorism and job insecurity, which would have significant social and economic policy implications. European governments have sought to strengthen security measures and immigration laws, often with consequences that disproportionately and negatively affect Muslims. At the same time, European governments have increased their efforts to address Islamophobia and improve Muslim integration, partly in response to the growth in the reporting of anti-Muslim hate crimes. Each …

Nuclear Threat As Race Hatred, John Streamas Apr 2023

Nuclear Threat As Race Hatred, John Streamas

Journal of Hate Studies

Nuclear weapons, since their advent in the 1940s, have been regarded as so massively destructive and lethal that few have questioned whether particular groups might be targeted. Deaths across their geographical sweep seem to be total and indiscriminate. I argue, however, that it is no accident or coincidence that the Bomb was first used on a non-White nation; people of color in the United States such as Langston Hughes believed it would never be used against a White enemy. On the other hand, even if it is a race weapon, it is also still a species weapon, so that even …

The Influence Of The Substrate On The Functionality Of Spin Crossover Molecular Materials, Saeed Yazdani, Jared Phillips, Thilini K. Ekanayaka, Ruihua Cheng, Peter A. Dowben Apr 2023

The Influence Of The Substrate On The Functionality Of Spin Crossover Molecular Materials, Saeed Yazdani, Jared Phillips, Thilini K. Ekanayaka, Ruihua Cheng, Peter A. Dowben

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Spin crossover complexes are a route toward designing molecular devices with a facile readout due to the change in conductance that accompanies the change in spin state. Because substrate effects are important for any molecular device, there are increased efforts to characterize the influence of the substrate on the spin state transition. Several classes of spin crossover molecules deposited on different types of surface, including metallic and non-metallic substrates, are comprehensively reviewed here. While some non-metallic substrates like graphite seem to be promising from experimental measurements, theoretical and experimental studies indicate that 2D semiconductor surfaces will have minimum interaction with …

Reducing Officer-Involved Deaths Of Civilians In Urban Areas: Forecasting The Effects Of Departmental Policies, James D. Kelsay, Ian A. Silver, Leah C. Butler Apr 2023

Reducing Officer-Involved Deaths Of Civilians In Urban Areas: Forecasting The Effects Of Departmental Policies, James D. Kelsay, Ian A. Silver, Leah C. Butler

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Recent police-involved deaths of Black civilians have sparked public outcry and demand for police reforms. However, many departmental policies intended to reduce the lethal use-of-force by police officers lack empirical support for their effectiveness. To address this shortcoming, a Bayesian random intercept model is used to forecast the effects of eight departmental policies on the number of police-involved civilian deaths across 66 police departments. Results suggest that although several policies are associated with a reduction in officer-involved deaths of civilians in some police departments, they are unlikely to eliminate officer-involved deaths completely. Specifically, we observed that introducing additional departmental policies …
