Histopathology Of The Mitral Valve Residual Leaflet In Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Isabel Castro Alvarez, Alexandra Stepanovic, Kristen Thomas, Briana Zeck, Luis Chiriboga, Daniel G Swistel, Mark V Sherrid
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: Mitral valve (MV) elongation is a primary hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) phenotype and contributes to obstruction. The residual MV leaflet that protrudes past the coaptation point is especially susceptible to flow-drag and systolic anterior motion. Histopathological features of MVs in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (OHCM), and of residual leaflets specifically, are unknown.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to characterize gross, structural, and cellular histopathologic features of MV residual leaflets in OHCM. On a cellular-level, we assessed for developmental dysregulation of epicardium-derived cell (EPDC) differentiation, adaptive endocardial-to-mesenchymal transition and valvular interstitial cell proliferation, and genetically-driven persistence of cardiomyocytes in the …

Neuroendocrine Tumor Of The Ampulla Of Vater: A Case Report, Satya N Gupta
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the ampulla of Vater are extremely rare. Here, we discuss the clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and treatment options of a recently experienced case of NET of the ampulla of Vater in light of the literature. A 56-year-old woman presented with recurrent upper abdominal pain. Ultrasonography (USG) of the whole abdomen showed multiple gallstones along with a dilated common bile duct (CBD). For evaluating the dilated CBD, a magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography was performed, which revealed the double-duct sign. Subsequently, an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a bulged-out ampulla of the Vater. Biopsy and histopathological examination of the growth …

Bipolar disorder (BD) has been previously associated with premature mortality and aging, including acceleration of epigenetic aging. Suicide attempts (SA) are greatly elevated in BD and are associated with decreased lifespan, biological aging, and poorer clinical outcomes. We investigated the relationship between GrimAge, an epigenetic clock trained on time-to-death and associated with mortality and lifespan, and SA in two independent cohorts of BD individuals (discovery cohort - controls (n = 50), BD individuals with (n = 77, BD/SA) and without (n = 67, BD/non-SA) lifetime history of SA; replication cohort - BD/SA (n = 48) and BD/non-SA (n = 47)). …

The plasmonic antenna probe is constructed using a silver rod embedded in a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) ad-drop filter. Rabi antennas are formed when space-time control reaches two levels of system oscillation and can be used as human brain sensor probes. Photonic neural networks are designed using brain-Rabi antenna communication, and transmissions are connected via neurons. Communication signals are carried by electron spin (up and down) and adjustable Rabi frequency. Hidden variables and deep brain signals can be obtained by external detection. A Rabi antenna has been developed by simulation using computer simulation technology (CST) software. Additionally, a communication device …

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a deadly tumor with dynamic evolutionary process. Although much endeavors have been made in identifying the temporal patterns of cancer progression, it remains challenging to infer and interpret the molecular alterations associated with cancer development and progression. To this end, we developed a computational approach to infer the progression trajectory based on cross-sectional transcriptomic data. Analysis of the LUAD data using our approach revealed a linear trajectory with three different branches for malignant progression, and the results showed consistency in three independent cohorts. We used the progression model to elucidate the potential molecular events in LUAD …

BACKGROUND: Accurate and efficient methods to identify venous thromboembolism (VTE) events in hospitalized people are needed to support large-scale studies. Validated computable phenotypes using a specific combination of discrete, searchable elements in electronic health records to identify VTE and distinguish between hospital-acquired (HA)-VTE and present-on-admission (POA)-VTE would greatly facilitate the study of VTE, obviating the need for chart review.
OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate computable phenotypes for POA- and HA-VTE in adults hospitalized for medical reasons.
METHODS: The population included admissions to medical services from 2010 to 2019 at an academic medical center. POA-VTE was defined as VTE diagnosed within …

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of atrial fibrillation, circadian fluctuation in blood pressure, and oxygen desaturation at night is likely associated with the pathophysiology of wake-up stroke. Whether patients who experience wake-up strokes are candidates for thrombolysis treatment is a serious dilemma. The aim is to investigate the association between risk factors and wake-up stroke and to determine variations that are associated with the pathophysiology of wake-up stroke.
METHODS: Five major electronic databases were searched using a fitted search strategy to identify relevant studies. Odds ratios with 95% CIs were used to calculate estimates, and the Quality Assessment for Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 …

The Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary marks one of the five major mass extinctions of the Phanerozoic. The ways in which the climate system responded to a bolide impact and extensive volcanism at this time over different time scales are highly debated. We used the distribution of branched tetraether lipids (brGDGT) from fossil peats at two sites in Saskatchewan, Canada (paleolatitude ~55°N), to generate a high-resolution (millennial) record of mean annual air temperature (MAAT) spanning the last ~4 k.y. of the Cretaceous and the first ~30 k.y. of the Paleogene. Our study shows that MAATs ranged from 16 to 29 °C, with …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Aim A current biogeographic paradigm states that climate regulates species distributions at continental scales and that biotic interactions are undetectable at coarse-grain extents. However, advances in spatial modelling show that incorporating food resource distributions are important for improving model predictions at large distribution scales. This is particularly relevant to understand the factors limiting the distribution of widespread apex predators whose diets are likely to vary across their range. Location Neotropical Central and South America. Methods The harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) is a large raptor, whose diet is largely comprised of arboreal mammals, all with broad distributions across Neotropical lowland forest. …

Background Overprescribing of off-licence psychotropic medications, particularly antipsychotics, for challenging behaviours in people with intellectual disabilities without a psychiatric disorder is a significant public health concern. In the United Kingdom, the National Health Service England launched an initiative in 2016, ‘STopping Over-Medication of People with learning disabilities, autism or both (STOMP)’, to address this concern. STOMP is supposed to encourage psychiatrists in the United Kingdom and elsewhere to rationalise psychotropic medication use in people with intellectual disabilities. The current study aims to gather UK psychiatrists' views and experience of implementing the STOMP initiative. Methods An online questionnaire was sent to …

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with myocardial infarctions being amongst the deadliest manifestations. Reduced blood flow to the heart can result in the death of cardiac tissue, leaving affected patients susceptible to further complications and recurrent disease. Further, contemporary management typically involves a pharmacopeia to manage the metabolic conditions contributing to atherosclerotic and hypertensive heart disease, rather than regeneration of the damaged myocardium. With modern healthcare extending lifespan, a larger demographic will be at risk for heart disease, driving the need for novel therapeutics that surpass those currently available in efficacy. Transdifferentiation …
