Many composite polymer systems have been created using many different polymers as well as ceramics and metals primarily in the form of powders added to the bulk polymer. The bulk of this work entails a study that was conducted to develop and characterize the mechanical, shape memory and self-healing properties of three polymer blends: polylactic acid (PLA) combined with maleated styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS-g-MA), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) combined with maleated styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS-g-MA), and polylactic …

Outlier Detection In Multivariate And High-Dimensional Datasets, Yuanhong Wu May 2023

Outlier Detection In Multivariate And High-Dimensional Datasets, Yuanhong Wu

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Accurate detection of outliers is crucial in the field of statistical analysis. Using classical statisticalmodels without considering the presence of outliers in the data can lead to misleading outcomes. There exist a myriad of procedures to detect outliers in statistics. We concentrate on the statistical techniques that can robustly identify outliers in data sets. To this end, we pursue two aims. First, we give an extensive overview of robust statistical methods which are still popular in recent years for outlier detection. We provide the definitions, algorithms and also discuss some important properties of these methods. Second, two real examples are …

Examining The Role Of Pretrial Detention On The Juvenile Plea Process, Isabelle May Clough May 2023

Examining The Role Of Pretrial Detention On The Juvenile Plea Process, Isabelle May Clough

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Plea bargains are a necessary part of the criminal justice system as a whole, and the juvenile justice system more specifically. However, juveniles may be at a particular disadvantage when entering into a plea bargain as a result of their developmental capacities. Pretrial detention in particular might influence the quality of the final plea agreement that a juvenile accepts, as adolescents would be motivated towards the short-term goal of being released from detention. The current study aimed to examine the relationship between juvenile pretrial detention and plea discounts through mediating relationships with number of attorneys and time to plea. Data …

Long-Term Effects Of Juvenile Ketamine And/Or Social Stress Exposure On Spatial Memory Performance In C57bl/6 Mice, Israel Garcia Carachure

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Ketamine is administered to manage major depressive disorder in adolescent patients. However, the long-term effects of juvenile ketamine exposure on memory-related tasks have not been thoroughly assessed. Thus, we examined whether exposure to ketamine, psychological stress, or both, results in long-lasting alterations in spatial memory in C57BL/6 mice. Furthermore, we evaluated how ketamine and/or psychological stress history influenced hippocampal protein kinase b¬–mammalian target of rapamycin (AKT-mTOR)-related signaling, since this molecular cascade is associated with ketamine’s acute/fast-acting antidepressant properties. Male and female postnatal day (PD)-35 mice underwent 10-days of vicarious defeat stress (VDS), a form of psychological stress, with or without …

Nonlinear Propagation Of Quasiplanar Shear Wave Beams In Soft Elastic Media With Transverse Isotropy, John M Cormack, Mark F Hamilton

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Model equations are developed for shear wave propagation in a soft elastic material that include effects of nonlinearity, diffraction, and transverse isotropy. A theory for plane wave propagation by Cormack [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 150, 2566 (2021)] is extended to include leading order effects of wavefront curvature by assuming that the motion is quasiplanar, which is consistent with other paraxial model equations in nonlinear acoustics. The material is modeled using a general expansion of the strain energy density to fourth order in strain that comprises thirteen terms defining the elastic moduli. Equations of motion for the transverse displacement components are …

A Translation Quality Assessment Of Two Translations Of Mahfouz’S Midaq Alley, M M Kullab Randa May 2023

A Translation Quality Assessment Of Two Translations Of Mahfouz’S Midaq Alley, M M Kullab Randa

Student Works (2020-2029)

Translation quality assessment (TQA) has been recently considered a productive research line and a fast-growing subfield of translation research. Reviewing the literature, TQA has been tackled either theoretically, applying a TQA model whereby the target text (TT) readers are completely ignored, or empirically, surveying the TT reader reception of the texts wherein the theory is marginalized. However, relying on a TQA model, in assessing the translation quality (TQ) without considering the TT readers concerns scholars since the major problem with whatever TQA model is lacking the empirical evidence from the TT readers. By contrast, TQA empirical studies are mainly inclined …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

The Chihuahuan Desert swamps are a hotspot for imperiled organisms including freshwater springsnails and bacteria. Many of these taxa are endemic to the desert and to the individual waterbodies where they occur. Efforts to conserve diversity in these threatened areas must account for the life history of the organisms, but also interactions between organisms including microbes. We documented the microbial assemblage associated with Tryonia metcalfi, a critically imperiled freshwater snail endemic to a ciénega system in western Texas. We identified 14 bacterial families in our snail samples and determined a core assemblage of 19 bacterial taxa (4 of which …

A Proof Of Concept For Detection Of Palato-Lingual Contact Without Intraoral Electrodes In A Human Participant, Amitava Biswas

Master's Theses

The author of this thesis conceived and investigated an unexpected electrical signal that may not be noticed during regular electroglottography (EGG) when electrodes are conventionally placed on the anterior surface of the throat. It appears that there is a measurable electrical signal from the EGG equipment when electrodes are placed over the frontal cheek (belly of zygomatic muscle), and the tongue is elevated to contact the hard palate, or the tongue is lowered to break the contact. Therefore, this phenomenon is designated as unconventional electroglottography (UEGG, Dr. Steven Cloud, private communication, July 17, 2022).

Two distinctive patterns of waveforms were …

Understanding The Developmental Regulation Of Opa1 Processing In C2c12 Myoblasts, Harpreet Kaur May 2023

Understanding The Developmental Regulation Of Opa1 Processing In C2c12 Myoblasts, Harpreet Kaur

Theses and Dissertations

Mitochondria is an energy-producing organelle in the cell that accept electrons from the Krebs cycle to generate energy in the form of ATP by oxidative phosphorylation. Two mitochondrial aspects, bioenergetics and dynamics are critical for energy balance and cellular stress responses. Mitochondrial dynamics refers to the balance between mitochondrial fusion (mitochondrial biogenesis) and mitochondrial fission (mitochondrial fragmentation). Cellular stress conditions that lead to dissipation of transmembrane potential (Δψm) trigger the activation of an IMM protein, OMA1, a metalloprotease that leads to processing of another IMM protein, optic atrophy-1 (OPA1) that mediates IMM fusion. Persistent stress primes the mitochondria to mitophagy …

Artistic, Artworld, And Aesthetic Disobedience, Adam Burgos, Sheila Lintott May 2023

Artistic, Artworld, And Aesthetic Disobedience, Adam Burgos, Sheila Lintott

Faculty Journal Articles

Jonathan Neufeld proposes a concept of aesthetic disobedience that parallels the political concept of civil disobedience articulated by John Rawls in A Theory of Justice. The artistic transgressions he calls aesthetic disobedience are distinctive in being public and deliberative in their aim to bring about specific changes in accepted artworld norms. We argue that Neufeld has offered us valuable insight into the dynamic and potent nature of art and the artworld; however, we contend that Neufeld errs by constraining aesthetic disobedience to the artworld. Through a reconsideration of the parallel between aesthetic and civil disobedience, we illustrate how aesthetic disobedience …
