Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Information is necessary for development and to make meaningful decisions, as such, students in the university need to have access to current, latest, and recent information; this can only be assured and ensured through the provision of internet connection within the university to students to access electronic resources scattered online. It is therefore believed that universities, as part of their functions, should provide internet service to students in the university to aid their academic activities. This study investigated the relationship between the availability of institutional internet connection and the use of electronic information resources by undergraduates using the descriptive survey …

Green Library Initiative In Nigeria: Insights And Levels Of Implementation In Academic Libraries, Emo Okpidi-Urhibo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Evolution is one recurrent phenomenon that affects almost every facet of human endeavour. Libraries have had their own share in many ways. The green library concept, although, a relatively new-sprung initiative, have not been given full attention. The understanding of librarians, and the levels of adoption of the green library concept in Nigeria is reported herein. The descriptive survey approach was used. Results showed that librarians have the right perception about the concept, and have implemented or currently translating their policies, practices, and services in compliance with environmental sustainability objectives. However, much more needs to be done as the libraries …

Learning-Based Stock Trending Prediction By Incorporating Technical Indicators And Social Media Sentiment, Zhaoxia Wang, Zhenda Hu, Fang Li, Seng-Beng Ho, Erik Cambria
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Stock trending prediction is a challenging task due to its dynamic and nonlinear characteristics. With the development of social platform and artificial intelligence (AI), incorporating timely news and social media information into stock trending models becomes possible. However, most of the existing works focus on classification or regression problems when predicting stock market trending without fully considering the effects of different influence factors in different phases. To address this gap, this research solves stock trending prediction problem utilizing both technical indicators and sentiments of the social media text as influence factors in different situations. A 3-phase hybrid model is proposed …

We present LiLoc, a system for precise 3D localization and tracking of mobile IoT devices (e.g., robots) in indoor environments using multi-perspective LiDAR sensing. The key differentiators in our work are: (a) First, unlike traditional localization approaches, our approach is robust to dynamically changing environmental conditions (e.g., varying crowd levels, object placement/layout changes); (b) Second, unlike prior work on visual and 3D SLAM, LiLoc is not dependent on a pre-built static map of the environment and instead works by utilizing dynamically updated point clouds captured from both infrastructural-mounted LiDARs and LiDARs equipped on individual mobile IoT devices. To achieve fine-grained, …

Large-scale pre-trained models such as CodeBERT, GraphCodeBERT have earned widespread attention from both academia and industry. Attributed to the superior ability in code representation, they have been further applied in multiple downstream tasks such as clone detection, code search and code translation. However, it is also observed that these state-of-the-art pre-trained models are susceptible to adversarial attacks. The performance of these pre-trained models drops significantly with simple perturbations such as renaming variable names. This weakness may be inherited by their downstream models and thereby amplified at an unprecedented scale. To this end, we propose an approach namely ContraBERT that aims …

It is common practice for OSS users to leverage and monitor security advisories to discover newly disclosed OSS vulnerabilities and their corresponding patches for vulnerability remediation. It is common for vulnerability fixes to be publicly available one week earlier than their disclosure. This gap in time provides an opportunity for attackers to exploit the vulnerability. Hence, OSS users need to sense the fix as early as possible so that the vulnerability can be remediated before it is exploited. However, it is common for OSS to adopt a vulnerability disclosure policy which causes the majority of vulnerabilities to be fixed silently, …

Generation-Based Code Review Automation: How Far Are We?, Xin Zhou, Kisub Kim, Bowen Xu, Donggyun Han, Junda He, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Code review is an effective software quality assurance activity; however, it is labor-intensive and time-consuming. Thus, a number of generation-based automatic code review (ACR) approaches have been proposed recently, which leverage deep learning techniques to automate various activities in the code review process (e.g., code revision generation and review comment generation). We find the previous works carry three main limitations. First, the ACR approaches have been shown to be beneficial in each work, but those methods are not comprehensively compared with each other to show their superiority over their peer ACR approaches. Second, general-purpose pre-trained models such as CodeT5 are proven …

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, which benefit from the availability of large-scale datasets and increasing computational power, have become effective solutions to various critical tasks, such as natural language understanding, speech recognition, and image processing. The advancement of these AI systems is inseparable from open-source software (OSS). Specifically, many benchmarks, implementations, and frameworks for constructing AI systems are made open source and accessible to the public, allowing researchers and practitioners to reproduce the reported results and broaden the application of AI systems. The development of AI systems follows a data-driven paradigm and is sensitive to hyperparameter settings and data separation. Developers …

Exploring A Gradient-Based Explainable Ai Technique For Time-Series Data: A Case Study Of Assessing Stroke Rehabilitation Exercises, Min Hun Lee, Yi Jing Choy
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Explainable artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are increasingly being explored to provide insights into why AI and machine learning (ML) models provide a certain outcome in various applications. However, there has been limited exploration of explainable AI techniques on time-series data, especially in the healthcare context. In this paper, we describe a threshold-based method that utilizes a weakly supervised model and a gradient-based explainable AI technique (i.e. saliency map) and explore its feasibility to identify salient frames of time-series data. Using the dataset from 15 post-stroke survivors performing three upper-limb exercises and labels on whether a compensatory motion is observed or …
Boosting Just-In-Time Defect Prediction With Specific Features Of C/C++ Programming Languages In Code Changes, Chao Ni, Xiaodan Xu, Kaiwen Yang, David Lo
Boosting Just-In-Time Defect Prediction With Specific Features Of C/C++ Programming Languages In Code Changes, Chao Ni, Xiaodan Xu, Kaiwen Yang, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Just-in-time (JIT) defect prediction can identify changes as defect-inducing ones or clean ones and many approaches are proposed based on several programming language-independent change-level features. However, different programming languages have different characteristics and consequently may affect the quality of software projects. Meanwhile, the C programming language, one of the most popular ones, is widely used to develop foundation applications (i.e., operating system, database, compiler, etc.) in IT companies and its change-level characteristics on project quality have not been fully investigated. Additionally, whether open-source C projects have similar important features to commercial projects has not been studied much.To address the aforementioned …

Images are increasingly being shared by software developers in diverse channels including question-and-answer forums like Stack Overflow. Although prior work has pointed out that these images are meaningful and provide complementary information compared to their associated text, how images are used to support questions is empirically unknown. To address this knowledge gap, in this paper we specifically conduct an empirical study to investigate (I) the characteristics of images, (II) the extent to which images are used in different question types, and (III) the role of images on receiving answers. Our results first show that user interface is the most common …
Stop Words For Processing Software Engineering Documents: Do They Matter, Yaohou Fan, Chetan Arora, Christoph Treude
Stop Words For Processing Software Engineering Documents: Do They Matter, Yaohou Fan, Chetan Arora, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Stop words, which are considered non-predictive, are often eliminated in natural language processing tasks. However, the definition of uninformative vocabulary is vague, so most algorithms use general knowledge-based stop lists to remove stop words. There is an ongoing debate among academics about the usefulness of stop word elimination, especially in domainspecific settings. In this work, we investigate the usefulness of stop word removal in a software engineering context. To do this, we replicate and experiment with three software engineering research tools from related work. Additionally, we construct a corpus of software engineering domain-related text from 10,000 Stack Overflow questions and …

Graph Neural Point Process For Temporal Interaction Prediction, Wenwen Xia, Yuchen Li, Shengdong Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Temporal graphs are ubiquitous data structures in many scenarios, including social networks, user-item interaction networks, etc. In this paper, we focus on predicting the exact time of the next interaction, given a node pair on a temporal graph. This novel problem can support interesting applications, such as time-sensitive items recommendation, congestion prediction on road networks, and many others. We present Graph Neural Point Process (GNPP) to tackle this problem. GNPP relies on the graph neural message passing and the temporal point process framework. Most previous graph neural models only utilize the chronological order of observed events and ignore exact timestamps. …

A Comparative Study Between A Faith-Based Psychoeducational Intervention And Psychological Well-Being, Elizabeth Lamberson
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the difference in participants’ perceived psychological well-being/distress and perceived faith maturity over time based on participation in Walking Worthy a Journey to Freedom (WWJ). The research was designed as a fully mixed sequential equal status design with the quantitative portion conducted as an ex post facto comparative study followed by a focus group. Participants completed the CORE-OM, the FMS and RPWB at the beginning and the conclusion of the program. Statistically significant negative (suggests improvement) correlations were found for overall well-being (p < .001, d = .381), subjective well-being ( p < .001, d = 0.672), problems/symptoms (p < .001, d = .549), life-functioning (p < .001, d = .506), and risk (p < .001, d = .169). Differences in participants’ perceived overall faith maturity (p < .039, d = .352), perceived view of God (p < .001, d = .620), and perceived view of others (p < .022, d = .593) reflected a statistically significant increases. Differences in perceived overall psychological well-being (p < .001, d = .401), autonomy (p < .003, d = .540), environmental mastery (p < .001, d = .637), personal growth (p < .001, d = .451), positive relations (p < .001, d = .451), purpose in life (p < .003, d = .415), and self-acceptance (p < .001, d = .642), showed statistically significant mean increases. Through the focus group, participants contrasted negative themes including perfectionism, shame, living in lies, and codependency with positive themes of living in truth, freedom, making sense of life, and facilitating change. Spiritual themes included improved relationships, seeing others through God’s eyes, experiencing God’s love, and seeing self through God’s eyes. The mental health and spiritual constructs and themes explored through this study revealed movement away from pathology and toward wellness over the time spent in Walking Worthy. These findings provide mental health and faith-based practitioners a research base from which to evaluate the use of the program in practice.

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
TLS communication over the internet has risen rapidly in the last seven years (2015--2022), and there were over 156M active SSL certificates in 2022. The state-of-the-art Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), encompassing protocols, computational resources, and digital certificates, has evolved for 24 years to become the de-facto choice for encrypted communication over the Internet even on newer platforms such as mobile devices and Internet-of-Things (IoT) (despite being low powered with computational constraints). However, certificate revocation is one sub-protocol in TLS communication that fails to meet the rising scalability demands and remains open to exploitation. In this dissertation, the standard for X.509 …
Covering Problem With Minimum Radius Enclosing Circle, Eric Nartey Onyame
Covering Problem With Minimum Radius Enclosing Circle, Eric Nartey Onyame
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study extends the classical smallest enclosing circle problem in location science to optimize healthcare communication hubs. Given a set of demand points and potential groups, we identify the optimal number of subgroups to cover all points and the circle enclosing them with minimum radius. The center of this circle serves as the communication hub location, minimizing the distance between demand points and facilities subject to customer demand. We develop a nonconvex-nonlinear optimization model and propose a quadratic programming-based approximation algorithm to solve it. Tested on various hypothetical and real scenarios, our model effectively reduces the facility setup cost and …

Experiential learning incorporating intergenerational communication promotes understanding of aging, value placed on service, and sheds light on unforeseen skills and goals for students. This study evaluated the impacts of an intergenerational experiential learning program on character social, and educational development outcomes in students. Further, the study explored the benefits of such programs for older adults. Ultimately, the program developed students’ character relevant …
Probabilistic Risk Assessment Of System-Level Radiation Effects, Stephen Lawrence
Probabilistic Risk Assessment Of System-Level Radiation Effects, Stephen Lawrence
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
System-level radiation effects analysis is performed using a time-dependent Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) methodology. Data-driven models for the expected behavior of radiation-sensitive parts are instanced in a system model for Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). The system model is then solved using Bayesian Networks and Monte Carlo simulation in various mission environments, which may be dynamic and time-dependent. The results provide useful metrics of system reliability through hazardous radiation environments, identifying which failure modes and mission phases pose the greatest risk. A case study examining the NASA SpaceCube v2.0 processor demonstrates the PRA methodology with a comparison of risk in the …

The Relationship Between Temperature, Rainfall, And Tree Swallow Fledging Times, Caleb Gruber
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Weather effects such as temperature and precipitation are known to affect reproductive success of many avian species. Weather variables can directly or indirectly influence the fledging success of nestlings. I investigated the effect of minimum temperature, maximum temperature, average temperature, maximum rainfall experienced in one day during a fledging period, and average daily rainfall on how long it takes tree swallow nestlings in Tennessee to fledge using multi-linear regression and linear mixed-effects modeling. I found that minimum temperatures, maximum temperatures, maximum rain experienced in a one-day period, and total rain all had a significant relationship on the time it takes …
Who's Being Transcended?: The Role Of Belief Of Other As Self In Mediating The Relationship Between Mystical Experience And Mental Health, Christian Ishak
Who's Being Transcended?: The Role Of Belief Of Other As Self In Mediating The Relationship Between Mystical Experience And Mental Health, Christian Ishak
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Throughout history humans have experienced instances where the boundary between self and other dissolved, and the ordinary sense of “I” was replaced with a unity to all of existence or a higher power. These are commonly referred to as mystical experiences, and although the relationship between mystical experiences and positive mental health outcomes has largely been supported, the psychological mechanisms underlying it are unknown. This study develops a scale to test the theory that Belief of Other as Self (BOS) mediates the relationship between mystical experience and mental health. This study also hypothesizes spiritual practice and time elapsed since one’s …

Inference For Multiple Utility In Time-Dependent Choice Pairs Under Copula-Based Models, Sasanka Adikari
Inference For Multiple Utility In Time-Dependent Choice Pairs Under Copula-Based Models, Sasanka Adikari
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Models for discrete choice experiments (DCE) are frequently used to analyze consumer choices about products and services. A family of DCE, best-worst scaling experiments, offers more in-depth insights into consumer preferences by eliciting a best and worst choice from a set of options, rather than just a single preference. Traditional approaches often assume that choices are mutually exclusive over time, which may not always be the case. This dissertation proposes a novel model for DCE that takes into account the changing nature of consumer choices over time and the priority constraint of transition probabilities. The model introduces a copula combination …

With the continued transformation of the cultural landscape of America and the recognition of the importance of our diverse communities, schools and educational leaders across the country must transform and grow to be reflective of this diverse world. Because it has been demonstrated that principals have a profound impact on instruction and student learning, facilitating the implementation of culturally relevant pedagogies can play a critical role in developing and sustaining effective urban schools. However, there is an undertheorized tension between the inequality regimes of managerialism and the goals of culturally responsive school leadership, highlighting that the undergirding theories of action …
E-Cadherin Force Transmission And Stiffness Sensing, Mazen Mezher
E-Cadherin Force Transmission And Stiffness Sensing, Mazen Mezher
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
E-cadherin is the chief mediator of cell-cell adhesion between epithelial cells and is a known mechanosensor. Force transmission and stiffness sensing are two crucial aspects of E-cadherin mechanobiology.
E-cadherin has an extracellular adhesive region, a transmembrane region and an intracellular region that binds to adhesion-associated proteins. Here, we assessed how different factors affect the level of force transmission (i) from inside the cell such as adhesion-associated proteins, (ii) on the cell membrane, such as growth factor receptors and (iii) outside the cell, such as different binding partners in adhesion. To study the level of force transmission inside the cell, we …

Recent research has shown a relationship between spiral galaxy satellite populations and the size of spiral bulges. The modern cosmological model of our universe (ΛCDM), does not predict this. Instead, ΛCMD predicts that only the total dynamical mass of a host galaxy should be correlated with satellite populations. We investigate this relationship in regimes other than satellites. In this study we compare the bulge to total mass ratios of spiral galaxies to the number of nearby galaxies within “n” Mpc. We use four papers from literature that calculate bulge to total mass ratios of 189 spiral galaxies using …
Fusion Bonding Behavior Of 3d Printed Pa6/Cf Composites Via Post Fabrication Compaction, Gonzalo Fernandez Mediavilla
Fusion Bonding Behavior Of 3d Printed Pa6/Cf Composites Via Post Fabrication Compaction, Gonzalo Fernandez Mediavilla
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Additive manufacturing (AM) is becoming a robust production technology for aerospace, healthcare, and construction industries among others. Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is one of the methods most used to 3D print products. FDM has limitation due to interlayer adhesion and restriction imposed by the printing direction. Specially with AM composites, as reinforced nylon PA6 with short fibers, parts show more strength along the direction of the filament due to the alignment of the carbon fibers, but weaker in other directions. The proposed method to solve this issue is to print parts separately and join them together by fusion bonding. PA6/CF …
