Spinal Cord Stimulator Migration And Malfunction In The Setting Of Upper Extremity Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: A Case Report
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Background: Common long-term complications for neuromodulation include lead migration, loss of efficacy of therapy, and lead malfunction. The following case describes pitfalls of lead migration and preventative steps to decrease risk of this complication.
Case report: This is an independent case study following the outcome of one patient diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome that had failed conservative therapy. She underwent implantation of a spinal cord stimulator (SCS) with > 90% relief. Loss of relief was described on follow-up. On reimaging, the SCS had migrated cephalad and this was likely the cause of the malfunction.
Conclusions: Lead migration can occur at …
Cervical Myelomalacia Diagnosed Via Magnetic Resonance Imaging In A Patient With A Spinal Cord Stimulator For Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: A Case Report
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Background: Neuromodulation is used to treat chronic pain, especially failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) and complex regional pain syndrome (CPRS) type 1 and type 2. Until recently, neuromodulation had significant restrictions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) usage (4). Our patient provided Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) compliant consent for the inclusion of his clinical information in this report.
Case report: A 43-year-old man developed CPRS of his right upper extremity that was treated with an MRI-compatible high frequency spinal cord stimulator (SCS). Two years later, he presented with worsening neck and right upper extremity neuropathic pain. …

BACKGROUND: Imbalance of the tryptophan (TRP) pathway may influence symptoms among patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This study explored relationships among different components that contribute to TRP metabolism (dietary intake, stool metabolite levels, predicted microbiome metabolic capability) in females with IBS and healthy controls (HCs). Within the IBS group, we also investigated relationships between TRP metabolic determinants, Bifidobacterium abundance, and symptoms of IBS.
METHODS: Participants with IBS (Rome III) and HCs completed a 28-day diary of gastrointestinal symptoms and a 3-day food record for TRP intake. They provided a stool sample for shotgun metagenomics, 16 S rRNA analyses, and …
Why The Vonoprazan Helicobacter Pylori Therapies In The Us-European Trial Produced Unacceptable Cure Rates
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori infects a large percentage of the world's population and is etiologically related to gastric cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved two 14-day vonoprazan-containing regimens (vonoprazan-amoxicillin with or without clarithromycin) for H. pylori infections in the United States/Europe.
METHODS: We critically reviewed the trial methods to discover why the results were unacceptable low [i.e., no regimen achieved clinically acceptable (≥ 90%) or even conditionally acceptable cure rates (≥ 85%)]. Cure rates with antibiotic susceptible strains were 84.7 for vonoprazan triple therapy, 78.5 for vonoprazan-amoxicillin, and 78.7 for lansoprazole triple therapy, respectively. As was previously shown …

Towards Long-Term Impact Of Deep Learning Systems In Medical Imaging, Kruttika Sutrave
Towards Long-Term Impact Of Deep Learning Systems In Medical Imaging, Kruttika Sutrave
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Deep learning has driven AI's rapid growth in recent years, especially in the medical domain, where deep CNNs are the state-of-the-art for image recognition and classification. However, training them from scratch is challenging due to the lack of data and high computational requirements. Transfer Learning (TL) is an effective approach for limited training data, and TL integrated with GANs has improved image analysis models. It was unclear how much impact big data-driven Deep Learning systems had on adoption and acceptance in real-world healthcare. Specifically, the effectiveness of recently developed DL systems as scalable and generalizable AI applications remained an open …
Cybereducation-By-Design™: Developing A Framework For Cybersecurity Education At Secondary Education Institutions In Arizona, Paul Wagner
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Most survey results agree that there is a current and ongoing shortage of skilled cybersecurity workers that places our privacy, infrastructure, and nation at risk. Estimates for the global Cybersecurity Workforce Gap range from 2.72 million (ISC2, 2021) to 3.5 million (Cyber Academy, 2021) for 2021 and the United States estimates range from 465,000 (Brooks, 2021) to over 769,000 (Cyber Seek, 2022) open jobs as of November 2022. The most optimistic estimates still demonstrate a critical issue. As cybersecurity threats continue to grow in sophistication, scope, and scale, the ability to secure the United States from these threats lies in …
A Burkean Analysis Of Eighteenth, Nineteenth, And Twentieth Century Christian Hymns, Keely Hardeman
A Burkean Analysis Of Eighteenth, Nineteenth, And Twentieth Century Christian Hymns, Keely Hardeman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hymns are one of the most popular forms of Christian worship, dating back to biblical times. Throughout history, hymns have been a way for people from all backgrounds and beliefs to express themselves in song. Hymnists have based their hymns on scriptures from the Bible, but have also written their hymns based on inspiration from scripture or divine revelation as well as their own earthly experience. To this day, hymns are still very present in both traditional and contemporary places of Christian worship, suggesting they are continually influential to the masses. My analysis looks at how hymns inform Christians’ theological …

Although concrete is the most widely used building material in the world, its limited tensile strength makes cracking a common phenomenon in concrete elements. This study investigates the potential of autonomous self-healing as an eco-friendly and lowcost method to increase the durability of concrete. The crack-healing potential of different types of high-alkaline-tolerant bacteria or calcite-precipitation microorganisms is investigated. High-alkaline-tolerant bacteria and calcite-precipitation microorganisms were used to retrofit lab-fractured concrete samples. The samples healed with each of these bacteria groups were cast and tested under compressive load up to failure to measure the compressive strength of the concrete samples. The outcomes …

Preconstruction Support Cost Hours Estimating On Caltrans Pavement Rehabilitation Projects, Nigel Blampied, Tariq Shehab, Elhami Nasr, Laxmi Sindhu Samudrala
Mineta Transportation Institute
Because the construction phase accounts for the majority of project costs for pavement rehabilitation projects, most research on infrastructure project cost estimating focuses on that phase, rather than on the preconstruction phases. Nevertheless, costs incurred prior to construction, referred to in this report as "preconstruction costs" are significant and worthy of consideration (See Section 2.1 of the report for a more detailed and precise definition of preconstruction). In the 20202021 fiscal year, for instance, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) spent more than $169 million on preconstruction work for pavement rehabilitation projects. This report presents the results of a study …

Today, aviation is one of the most technologically advanced and innovative sectors in the world. With fast-depleting natural resources, increasing environmental pollution, and continuous growth in fuel cost, efficiency has become industry’s top priority. Engineers are making gradual improvements that offer overall increase in aircraft’s performance. Drag is critical factor in aviation as it directly impacts aircraft’s fuel efficiency, range, and speed. During the design phase, engineers invest significant effort and expense in attempting to minimize the drag profile by implementing aerodynamic shapes and constantly reducing component weights. One of the real-life examples of such engineering attempts is Piper Archer, …
A Multi-Level Comparison Of Increasing Training Modalities To Train Behavior Analysts To Conduct An Intensive Pediatric Feeding Intervention, Ronald Joseph Clark
A Multi-Level Comparison Of Increasing Training Modalities To Train Behavior Analysts To Conduct An Intensive Pediatric Feeding Intervention, Ronald Joseph Clark
Theses and Dissertations
A common focus within behavior analytic clinical practice is to incorporate training with caregivers to promote successful transition of clinical services. In the pediatric feeding literature, for example, training caregivers to ensure maintenance and generalization of the intervention is expected. However, training staff members to provide specific behavioral interventions has received less attention. The current study systematically implemented three levels of training to evaluate the level of intensity required to train behavior analytic staff (i.e., behavior technicians, Registered Behavior Technicians®, and Board-Certified Behavior Analysts®) to implement a feeding protocol with a role play partner. Only one participant met the mastery …
How To Help Solve The Reviewer Problem In Academic Publishing, Kamal Upadhyaya, Subroto Roy
How To Help Solve The Reviewer Problem In Academic Publishing, Kamal Upadhyaya, Subroto Roy
American Business Review
We are delighted to introduce Volume 26 of the ABR, and this editorial is about a problem that journal editors in all academic disciplines face.
The situation is a familiar one to Academic Journal Editors. You have a deluge of submissions, and authors vigorously follow up on the status of their submissions while reviewers are reluctant to accept the review request. To the credit of ABR reviewers, they get the review done once they accept the assignment. Our last year’s editorial (Upadhyaya and Roy, 2022) thanked those reviewers. We thought we should explore the “finding reviewer” problem in our 2023 …
Relational Job Design Based Cognitive Pathways To Employee Entrepreneurial Behaviour, Roshni Das
Relational Job Design Based Cognitive Pathways To Employee Entrepreneurial Behaviour, Roshni Das
American Business Review
Knowledge based work requires that employees know how to deal with ambiguity and to get ahead of it by being innovative, proactive and risk-taking. These three traits together constitute what is known as employee entrepreneurial behavior (EEB) which is a crucial competence in organizations that operate in dynamic environments. There is however a complex combination of cognitions and metacognitions that effective knowledge workers undertake to make sense of their environment; and these cognitive pathways are not yet fully understood. This is the gap that the current study aims to fill. Data were collected from 285 white collar workers and their …
Corporate Cash Holdings And Firm Performance In India: An Empirical Investigation Of The Effects Of Audit Quality And Firm Growth, Nirosha Hewa Wellalage, Anura De Zoysa, Shiguang Ma
Corporate Cash Holdings And Firm Performance In India: An Empirical Investigation Of The Effects Of Audit Quality And Firm Growth, Nirosha Hewa Wellalage, Anura De Zoysa, Shiguang Ma
American Business Review
This paper examines the effects of audit quality and firm growth on the relationship between corporate cash holdings and firm performance by using a sample of about 2500 unique non-financial Indian firms from 2000 to 2017, consisting of 51,388 firm-year observations. The results obtained by controlling for potential endogeneity using the dynamic panel generalised method of moment (GMM) approach show that cash holdings have an inverse U-shaped (concave) relationship with firm performance, which is stronger for firms with higher audit quality than firms with lower audit quality. Our findings also show that firm growth affects the cash holdings and firm …

Contribution Of Exchange Traded Funds In Hedging Crude Oil Price Risk, Keshab Shrestha, Sheena Sara Suresh Philip, Yessy Peranginangin
American Business Review
In this study, we empirically analyze the contributions of three crude oil-based exchange traded funds (ETFs) and the futures contract in hedging crude oil price risk. In order to measure hedging contributions of ETFs, we estimate the usual minimum variance hedge ratios as well as the quantile based minimum variance hedge ratios based on three different methods. We also compute the hedging effectiveness of the futures contract and three ETFs. We find that ETFs can be used as hedging instruments especially for the longer hedging horizons and extreme quantiles. However, overall, we find the futures contract to be the most …

Demystifying The Effect Of High-Performance Work Systems On Job Involvement Based On Dual-Path Mediation Model, Aastha Tripathi, Aalok Kumar
American Business Review
This study investigates the links between high-performance work systems (HPWS) and job involvement (JI) via organizational justice (OJ) and employee well-being (EW) as mediators. The proposed social exchange theory-based research framework is used to demystify the role of HPWS on job involvement. The proposed framework is validated with ten five-star hotels in India through structural equation modelling. The model reliability and robustness of constructs are tested with confirmatory factor analysis. The findings indicate that organizations must pay close attention to the perceptions of organizational justice and employee wellbeing to foster greater job involvement in their workforce. The positive relationship between …

Micro-Targeting Consumers To Reduce Consumptive Externalities, Tamara L. Sheldon, J. R. Deshazo, Bronwyn Lewis Friscia
Faculty Publications
When correcting for consumption externalities policymakers may employ economic incentives, a uniform moral suasion intervention, or various micro-targeted moral suasion interventions. To assess the relative effectiveness of these policy interventions, we randomly assign consumers to different moral suasion treatments designed to increase their willingness to pay for energy efficient light bulbs. Both economic incentives and single moral suasion interventions have similar modest effects on household willingness to pay for this durable good. However, we find that optimally targeting moral suasion messages increases consumers' choice of the most efficient light bulbs even more than large subsidies.
Prefrontal Activation During Inhibition Of A Balance Recovery Step, Ezinne Abugu
Prefrontal Activation During Inhibition Of A Balance Recovery Step, Ezinne Abugu
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The ability to quickly step is an important strategy to avoid a fall. However, real-world settings often constrain a stepping path. Such constraints necessitate response inhibition to prevent an inappropriate step and select a new course of action to ultimately recover balance. The present study investigated neural mechanisms that underlie this ability to stop a highly automatic balance recovery step. In the field of cognitive neuroscience, response inhibition has typically been researched using focal hand reaction tasks performed by seated participants. This approach combined with neuroimaging has revealed a neural stopping network, which includes the right Inferior Frontal Gyrus (right …

An Ideal Monarch: The Piety, Masculinity, And Kingship Of King Louis Ix Of France, Tell Joyner
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
King Louis IX of France, who ruled from 1226 to 1270, is widely considered to have been one of the greatest European kings of the Middle Ages. His rule was long remembered as an ideal period of good government and prosperity, and future kings sought and were expected to emulate him for centuries. Historians have often discussed the key role that the king’s pious exercise of his kingship played in his reign. In particular, historians have discussed the role that his belief in the twin missions of saving his subjects and making France into a Christian kingdom played in his …
Methods For Preparing And Characterizing Granular Materials For Electron Yield Measurements, Tom Keaton
Methods For Preparing And Characterizing Granular Materials For Electron Yield Measurements, Tom Keaton
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This work presents a systematic study on sample preparation methods and accuracy of electron yield (EY) measurements of highly insulating, granular materials. EY measurements of highly insulating materials, especially those with high EY, are challenging due to the effects of sample charging even for very low fluence electron probe beams. EY measurements of particulates are complicated by: (i) roughness effects from particulate size, shape, coverage, and compactness; (ii) particle adhesion; (iii) substrate contributions; and (iv) electrostatic repulsion and potential barriers from charged particles and substrates. Numerous methods were explored to rigidly affix particles on conducting substrates at varying coverages for …

Relationships Between Muscle Characteristics And Step Outcomes In Young And Old Adults, Kareem Abubukker
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Background: Falls are a primary cause of mortality and morbidity in older adults. In an effort to assess falls, a number of studies have measured neurological, biomechanical, and neuromuscular function in relation to fall risk. Despite efforts, falls continue to affect the older adult population leading to subsequent impaired mobility and function. Multiple factors contribute to fall risk among older adults, however, a factor that has shown a consistent relationship with the prevalence of future falls is reduced muscle characteristics. Moreover, the ability to rapidly accelerate a limb, as captured by rate of power development (RPD), rate of velocity development …
