The human gut microbiome is a burgeoning field of research due to recent recognition of its profound impact on the human hosts’ homeostasis, physiology and metabolism, and disease. Botanical natural products have been utilized for disease prevention and medical treatment since ancient times. Increased consumption of botanical natural products for their health benefits have led researchers to investigate interactions between the gut microbiome and botanical natural products. Garcinia mangostana, also known as mangosteen, is a fruit from Southeast Asia that is known for its health benefits such as anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, and anticancer properties. Its benefits have been linked to bioactive …
Uconn Baseball Batting Order Optimization, Gavin Rublewski, Gavin Rublewski
Uconn Baseball Batting Order Optimization, Gavin Rublewski, Gavin Rublewski
Honors Scholar Theses
Challenging conventional wisdom is at the very core of baseball analytics. Using data and statistical analysis, the sets of rules by which coaches make decisions can be justified, or possibly refuted. One of those sets of rules relates to the construction of a batting order. Through data collection, data adjustment, the construction of a baseball simulator, and the use of a Monte Carlo Simulation, I have assessed thousands of possible batting orders to determine the roster-specific strategies that lead to optimal run production for the 2023 UConn baseball team. This paper details a repeatable process in which basic player statistics …

Meta-Method Analysis On Therapists’ Experiences: An Inquiry Into Qualitative Psychotherapy Research Methodology, Javier L. Rizo
Graduate Masters Theses
I conducted a meta-method study to explore the methodological and reporting characteristics of qualitative studies on therapists’ experiences conducting psychotherapy. Articles were identified through a PsycINFO search, and through a review of article text their methodological and reporting features were coded and quantitatively analyzed. Consideration was given to standards of qualitative research in psychology, especially methodological integrity. Results showed increases in the number of these qualitative studies from the 2000s onwards. This rise seems to be above that in psychology, but comparable to other psychotherapy literature. Publication characteristics of this body of literature, namely journal discipline and impact score, showed …
Brutality Behind Bars: A Look At Prison Violence In Ecuador, Zulema Alejandra Palacios Jaramillo
Brutality Behind Bars: A Look At Prison Violence In Ecuador, Zulema Alejandra Palacios Jaramillo
Graduate Masters Theses
Prisons are frequently perceived as spaces where those unwanted by society are placed. Thus, they are often purposefully ignored and left under-served. This is the reality of prisons and inmates in Ecuador, where violence has reached unprecedented levels, raising concerns about its causes. As this thesis shows, violence inside prisons is not an isolated incident only provoked by the restrictive nature of detention centers, or the character of inmates, but rather a manifestation of a complex mix of institutional, organizational, criminological, and social factors at play in the country. This thesis aims at understanding, from a conflict resolution perspective, what …
Spirits And Spirituality: Temperance And Racial Uplift In Nineteenth-Century Nantucket, Ma, John T. Crawmer
Spirits And Spirituality: Temperance And Racial Uplift In Nineteenth-Century Nantucket, Ma, John T. Crawmer
Graduate Masters Theses
Studies of alcohol consumption have shown alcohol’s role in defining social boundaries based on class and ethnicity, but few have interrogated alcohol in the context of race. During the early-19th century, free black communities were encouraged to refrain from alcohol as part of a larger project of racial uplift. Black societies and churches perceived intemperance as not only immoral but a threat to community survival. Excavations of the Nantucket African Meeting House noted a considerable lack of alcohol bottles, but it was unclear whether temperance was equally observed at the neighboring Boston-Higginbotham House. This research uses a minimum number of …

Sisters And Stewards: Women And Community-Building At The African Meeting House On Nantucket, Ma, Sean A. Fairweather
Graduate Masters Theses
Despite the underrepresentation of the achievements of Black women in the historical record, scholars have recognized the centrality of their participation in social institutions such as the church. This thesis uses a documentary archaeology approach to highlight the tactics employed by Black and other women of color on Nantucket Island to foster community through the Black Baptist church housed in the African Meeting House during the nineteenth century. In the free but racially marginalized neighborhood of New Guinea, the African Meeting House was one of two churches that facilitated dignity and uplift for its members. The maintenance of the church …

The Drosophila fruit fly is a well-established model organism for studying vision and neural perception. In this research, we focused on segmenting and analyzing photoreceptor cells in the Drosophila retina, specifically rhabdomeres. To facilitate our study, we acquired a comprehensive 3D dataset of Drosophila retina EM images and developed an automated segmentation pipeline using computer vision techniques. We evaluated the performance of our pipeline using automated metrics on Wild Type CS 1 and Nina D1 Mutant Drosophila datasets and prototyped a 3D model of segmented cells. The generated segmentation masks and 3D models of photoreceptor cells contribute to a better …
Exploring Predictors Of Healing From An Expressive Writing Intervention About Heterosexism And Why Lgbtq+ Clients Might Withhold From Their Therapists, Ally B. Hand
Graduate Masters Theses
Heterosexism is a cultural system that impacts LGBTQ+ individuals internally, interpersonally, institutionally, and structurally. Exposure to these different levels of heterosexism, whether enacted overtly, covertly, intentionally, or unintentionally, contributes to the well-documented and disproportionate negative mental health outcomes experienced by the LGBTQ+ community (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine [NASEM], 2020). Subsequently, LGBTQ+ individuals seek out professional mental health services at higher rates than cisgender and heterosexual populations, though access to therapeutic care that addresses sexual minority specific stressors, such as experiencing heterosexism directly, is limited (Williams & Fish, 2020). The current study is a secondary analysis of a …

Non-Rigid Registration With Deep Learning And Conformal Harmonic Maps, Daniel Billmann
Electronic Dissertations and Theses, 2010-current
We present a novel fully-automated approach to non-rigid registration for high-resolution facial scans using conformal harmonic maps. The novelty of this paper is its use of applied deep learning models to prepare data for geometric algorithms to compute non-rigid registration. We use facial detection to both constrain the boundary of the face and provide a mechanism to manipulate the input mesh. We use conformal harmonic maps[7] to map a dense 3D point cloud to the closed unit disc D1(0) and optimize the weights of each edge. Our experiments show the effectiveness of this approach.

Urinary Tract Infections Trigger Synucleinopathy Via The Innate Immune Response, Wouter Peelaerts, Scott J Hultgren, Tom J Hannan, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Symptoms in the urogenital organs are common in multiple system atrophy (MSA), also in the years preceding the MSA diagnosis. It is unknown how MSA is triggered and these observations in prodromal MSA led us to hypothesize that synucleinopathy could be triggered by infection of the genitourinary tract causing ɑ-synuclein (ɑSyn) to aggregate in peripheral nerves innervating these organs. As a first proof that peripheral infections could act as a trigger in MSA, this study focused on lower urinary tract infections (UTIs), given the relevance and high frequency of UTIs in prodromal MSA, although other types of infection might also …

Network Security With Smart Switches, Sahil Gupta
Network Security With Smart Switches, Sahil Gupta
Theses
The inspection of packet contents, Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), is an important component in network security. However, DPI is provided by complex black-box firewalls which the network administrator has no choice but to trust. This raises the question: Can network administrators build their own DPI-capable filter using a standard programmable switch? The commonly-accepted answer is that standard switches are not powerful enough; the standard they support (the P4 language) does allow users to specify how to parse packet headers, but not packet payload fields (e.g. URL), as required by DPI. Even though software-defined networks are quite capable of handling various …

Two of the most accurate tracking strategies are utilizing light dependent resistors or using some kind of solar position calculation. This paper …
A Study Of Large-Scale Structure Evolution Through Sunyaev-Zel’Dovich Corrections In Massive Clusters, Victoria Butler
A Study Of Large-Scale Structure Evolution Through Sunyaev-Zel’Dovich Corrections In Massive Clusters, Victoria Butler
Theses
The evolution of large-scale structure is traced by galaxy clusters, which are groups of galaxies gravitationally bound by a shared envelope of dark matter on scales of 1-10 Mpc. They are filled with an intra-cluster medium (ICM) consisting of a diffuse hot plasma with characteristic temperature $10^7K. While ICM models match reasonably well with observations, smaller-scale astrophysical processes in clusters can complicate interpretations of derived thermodynamic properties. These can include cluster-cluster mergers, feedback from active black holes, and accretion, among several others. The complex relationship between these processes and the properties of the ICM must be understood to use clusters …

New Intimacies, Louis Chavez
Theses
“New Intimacies” is a photographic study situated in environments known for gay cruising and public sex. Taking influence from Peter Hujar and the photographs he created in the cruising areas around Manhattan’s meatpacking district, I made experimental images that sought to envision the intangible and fleeting qualities of these geographic spaces. The inclusion of various photographic strategies (such as landscapes, portraits, and abstraction) implores the audience to consider the social and cultural elements that contributed to the formation of these sites as spaces of community and public intimacy. The work is also influenced by queer zines, experimental cinema, and other …
An Examination Of The Effects Of The Cost Volume On Vision Transformer-Based Optical Flow Models, Andrew Thompson
An Examination Of The Effects Of The Cost Volume On Vision Transformer-Based Optical Flow Models, Andrew Thompson
Theses
The optical flow task is an active research domain in the machine learning community with numerous downstream applications such as autonomous driving and action recognition. Convolutional neural networks have often been the basis of design for these models. However, given the recent popularity of self-attention architectures, many optical flow models now utilize a vision transformer backbone. Despite the differing backbone architectures used, consistencies in model design, especially regarding auxiliary operations, have been observed. Perhaps most apparent is the calculation and use of the cost volume. While prior works have well documented the effects of the cost volume on models with …
