Karst Hydrogeologic Framework And Factors Contributing To Flooding In Burgin, Kentucky, Charles Taylor, Junfeng Zhu, Matthew Carmichael, Hudson J. Koch

This report examines the karst hydrogeologic setting and drainage characteristics that are thought to contribute to frequent severe flooding in the city of Burgin in Mercer County, Kentucky. Burgin is located at the eastern end of an approximately 4.5 mi² mapped karst groundwater basin in the Ordovician limestone aquifer system in the Inner Bluegrass karst region. Flooding occurs within a streamless 1.4 mi² dry karst valley where almost all channelized surface runoff has been captured by sinkholes and sinking stream segments and diverted underground by con­duit piracy. UNLABELLED: How mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymorphisms influence complex phenotypes remains poorly understood. Using mitochondrial-nuclear exchange mice, we previously showed that mtDNA single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) modify metastasis, cardiovascular disease, and epigenetic marks independently of metabolic differences. The only mtDNA SNP correlating with these phenotypes resides in the gene encoding mitochondrial transfer RNA (tRNA)-arginine [mt-tRNAArg (UCG), mt-TR], suggesting a role for non-protein-coding loci. In this study, we identify and preliminarily characterize previously undescribed tRNA-derived fragments (tRF) generated from mt-TRs. Northern blotting revealed distinct tRF that are differentially expressed among mtDNA SNPs, between lung and liver, and between sexes. Surprisingly, small RNA sequencing …

Black adult males in resource-scarce Ohio Valley communities have historically experienced trauma that disrupted their well-being. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study, grounded in developmental trauma disorder (DTD) theory, was to explore how Black adult males understood and sustained well-being while living with DTD in resource-scarce environments. The participants comprised six Black adult males who resided in Ohio Valley communities and experienced trauma during childhood and adulthood. Data were collected through confidential, semi-structured, face-to-face interviews and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). This study examines whether the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure boom has created a measurable financial link between rare earth markets and the Magnificent Seven technology equities. Using daily data for the VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF (REMX) and the Solactive Magnificent Seven Index (MAG7) from November 1 2022, to June 30 2026, the study evaluates two dimensions: 1) long-run equilibrium and 2) short-run causality dynamics. The analysis applies Engle-Granger co-integration testing to price levels and Granger causality to log returns. Background: Young adults in Korea experience high risks of depression and suicide, yet preventive digital interventions tailored for young employees remain limited (Statistics Korea, 2023).

Objectives: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a digital mental health intervention designed to prevent depression and promote psychological well-being in young employees.

Methods: Using six steps of the Intervention Mapping (IM) protocol (Bartholomew Eldredge et al. 2016), a tailored digital mental health intervention for Korean young employees was developed. As such, understanding consumer behavior across the betting experiences is critical for the many stakeholders involved. The current study is a systematic quantitative literature review which assesses the current state of literature that intersects sport betting and consumer behavior literature, specifically cognitive, affective, conative, and consumption behavior of the sport bettors. It is well established that climate change affects productivity, but its effects on trade costs have not been studied. I combine international trade and weather data covering 190 years and show how an augmented gravity framework can be used to estimate the impact of climate change on bilateral trade cost. I find that climate change, as measured by decadal temperature shifts at the origin or destination country, increases them. Adaptation to these changes seems slow. They appear to be driven by impacts on maritime trade in particular, perhaps due to the vulnerability of seaports to climate change. Combining these results …

This study presents a waste-to-interface strategy for engineering high-performance Janus monolithic adsorbents through a circular biorefinery pathway utilizing coffee and rice residues. We demonstrate that a critical loading of 20 wt% biogenic submicron silica into a coffee-derived cellulose diacetate matrix triggers a definitive gravityinduced stratification, transforming a traditional isotropic film into a sophisticated asymmetric architecture. This Janus transition yields a superhydrophilic interface (contact angle < 5◦) and significantly enhances surface porosity, effectively bypassing the diffusion barriers that typically limit homogeneous biocomposites. Methylene Blue adsorption trials reveal that this 20 wt% threshold achieves rapid adsorption kinetics (p < 0.05) by maximizing active-site accessibility. In contrast to conventional powder adsorbents, these monolithic films enable zero-energy manual recovery, entirely eliminating the need for energy-intensive post-treatment separation. By bridging the gap between multi-feedstock valorization and anisotropic materials science, this work provides a scalable blueprint for sustainable, high-flux water remediation

From Insect Cognition To Sentience: Exploring The Edge, Catherine Macri, Martin Giurfa

Animal Sentience

What does The Edge of Sentience tell us about insect sentience and consciousness? In this commentary, we reflect on Jonathan Birch’s framework for defining and scientifically investigating sentience in animals. We discuss the methodological challenges of studying subjective experience in evolutionary distant species, and consider trace conditioning, affective states, and neural architectures as potential windows into consciousness in insects. We argue that uncertainty, whether concerning definitions or methodology, should not prevent experimental investigation; rather it should motivate new approaches and experimental designs for exploring the diversity of conscious experience.
