Efficacy Of Information Extraction From Bar, Line, Circular, Bubble And Radar Graphs, Hiddadura Isura Malinda Mendis Abeynayake, Ravindra S. Goonetilleke, Albert Wijeweera, Uwe Reischl

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

With the emergence of enormous amounts of data, numerous ways to visualize such data have been used. Bar, circular, line, radar and bubble graphs that are ubiquitous were investigated for their effectiveness. Fourteen participants performed four types of evaluations: between categories (cities), within categories (transport modes within a city), all categories, and a direct reading within a category from a graph. The representations were presented in random order and participants were asked to respond to sixteen questions to the best of their ability after visually scanning the related graph. There were two trials on two separate days for each participant. …

The Ethics Gap: Mdl Leadership Versus The Attorney-Client Relationship, Lauren E. Godshall May 2023

The Ethics Gap: Mdl Leadership Versus The Attorney-Client Relationship, Lauren E. Godshall

UC Law Journal

Mass torts cases take up a massive swath of the nation’s federal court docket yet are governed by little to no substantive procedural laws. Instead, a host of regular practices for multidistrict litigation (“MDL”) management have emerged through repetition. One such practice is the selection of a plaintiff steering committee (“PSC”): a small group of experienced plaintiffs’ attorneys that control and direct the litigation from initiation through settlement or other resolution. The PSC is extremely important—determining which experts to use, which injuries to focus on, and so forth. Yet there are no set rules dictating PSC management of the litigation, …

Ethics By Appointment: An Empirical Account Of Obscured Sanctioning In Mdl Cases, Roger Michalski May 2023

Ethics By Appointment: An Empirical Account Of Obscured Sanctioning In Mdl Cases, Roger Michalski

UC Law Journal

Ethical norms in litigation are policed through overlapping regulatory regimes. One of these regimes is internal to litigation and split into different components, including Federal Rules of Civil Procedure 11, 26(g), and 37; Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure 38; 28 U.S.C. §§ 1927 and 1447(c); as well as courts’ inherent authority to sanction litigants and attorneys. In the standard narrative, these tools provide immediate corrections to unethical conduct, unlike bar sanctions or derivative malpractice actions that are delayed and uncertain. Together, these tools aim to effectuate the goal of Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 1: to make sure parties cooperate …

Ai Proctoring: Academic Integrity Vs. Student Rights, Samantha Mita May 2023

Ai Proctoring: Academic Integrity Vs. Student Rights, Samantha Mita

UC Law Journal

Advancements in artificial intelligence (“AI”) and machine learning have found their way into the classroom. The use of artificial intelligence proctoring services (“AIPS”) has risen over the past few years with little consideration for the legal and ethical consequences of their implementation. Issues such as invasion of privacy and bias often get overlooked in favor of preconceived notions of fairness and infallibility associated with the concepts of AI and machine learning. These ethical concerns are especially magnified if AIPS are used in a K-12 setting. This Note, through a lens of AI ethics, recommends a two-pronged approach that creates an …

Interaction Effects And Selecting Regression Models Of Taylor Swift Song Popularity, Halle Schneidewind May 2023

Interaction Effects And Selecting Regression Models Of Taylor Swift Song Popularity, Halle Schneidewind

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Understanding music popularity and what drives it is important not only for artists but for other individuals who are financially tied to music sales including producers, writers, and record labels. Studies have been done to define how a song’s popularity can be measured, what attributes or features are drivers for popularity, and to what extent can a song’s popularity even be predicted. This paper takes two linear regression approaches to predicting the popularity of a Taylor Swift song on Spotify based on auditory features the Spotify API estimates and historic popularity of songs on Spotify. One model takes into consideration …

Indications For Early Surgical Intervention In Adolescents With Salter-Harris Ii Distal Radius Fractures, Cyrus Etebari, Jonathan Warren, Olivia Pruss, Sricharan Yadali, Vincent Staggs, Micah K. Sinclair

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2023

Introduction:

Currently, there is little information regarding risk factors for failure of nonoperative treatment in Salter-Harris II distal radius fractures (SHII-DRF). Our purpose is to identify predictors of which patients will require acute surgery and which will develop late malunion based on degree of deformity and skeletal maturity.

Methods:

This was a review of SHII distal radius fractures from 2017-2020. Patients between 9 and 18 years of age were included. Outcomes of interest included measurements of initial displacement, displacement post-reduction, and displacement after cast removal. These values were compared between patients who did not undergo surgery, had acute surgery, or …

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2023

Design and implementation of mobile health (mHealth) interventions that are usable and acceptable requires assessment of end-users’ perspectives, but theory-based validated measures are scant. Objective: To examine the internal consistency of a novel measure of mHealth acceptability that is being utilized in a COVID-19 testing intervention with African American church members. Methods: Participants completed a novel mHealth acceptability survey measure based on the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Technology Acceptance Model before receiving a religiously-tailored text messaging intervention component to encourage COVID-19 testing. The 7-item scale assessed multiple dimensions of acceptability of text messaging: interest, difficulty, enjoyment, confidence, utility, …

Measuring Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion In The Child Welfare Workforce, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development May 2023

Measuring Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion In The Child Welfare Workforce, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

QIC-Tips

Some child welfare professionals have stated that there is a critical need for systemic changes to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion, but where do child welfare agencies begin? Although change is never easy, the starting place on the journey to have a diverse, equitable, and inclusive (DEI) workforce is relatively simple. It starts with you—a child welfare supervisor, manager, or administrator. Start by considering what you think you know. Is your knowledge based on perception or data? What experiences shape your perceptions? What tools do you have to measure your workforce? Administrative data sets and surveys that gather both qualitative …

Beyond Dualities Of Place: West Bottoms Kcmo, Keleigh Ketelhut May 2023

Beyond Dualities Of Place: West Bottoms Kcmo, Keleigh Ketelhut

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

West Bottoms, Kansas City, is a historic, industrial neighborhood adjacent to downtown and splitting the Kansas/Missouri border. Formerly home to livestock trading, It is a place currently known for its lawless character and grit. Like many urban cores, it has grabbed the attention of developers, including current stakeholders in SomeraRoad, a New York-based developer, partnering with HOK Kansas City to masterplan the district and redevelop the portion adjacent to the Historic Core.

Like many urban redevelopment projects, the locals who live, work, and play here have concerns that the West Bottoms may succumb to conventional placelessness development, washing out the …

La Simbología Del Tlacuache En Las Colecciones De Tlatilco Y La Posible Antigüedad Del Mito, Patricia Ochoa Castillo May 2023

La Simbología Del Tlacuache En Las Colecciones De Tlatilco Y La Posible Antigüedad Del Mito, Patricia Ochoa Castillo

Tejiendo imágenes. Homenaje a Victòria Solanilla Demestre

Homenaje a Victòria Solanilla Demestre

This paper analyses the social role of women at Postclassic Yucatan; the Madrid …

As climate change grows in relevance in society, attention has often been turned to large universities to look at what solutions can help minimize the impacts contributing to the devastation. Sustainable transportation is an alternative that can help combat these issues. This study specifically focuses on what sustainable transportation looks like at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), and what barriers and motivations are present in the undergraduate students’ eyes. This was investigated through an open-ended qualitative survey administered to the undergraduate population of the UNL. This study asks how students make their mode decisions in relation to sustainable transportation methods, …

The Effect Of The Minimum Wage On Crime, Abbie Natkin May 2023

The Effect Of The Minimum Wage On Crime, Abbie Natkin

Economics Honors Projects

Evidence shows that education, labor market conditions for ex-offenders, and wages influence crime rates. The relationship between wages and crime specifically, has interesting potential policy implications, especially in arguments for increasing the minimum wage. Economists speculate that increasing the minimum wage may help reduce crime by increasing wages and thus increasing the opportunity cost of committing crime, making it riskier and less necessary for people to supplement their incomes through illegal avenues. Using crime data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports and minimum wage data from Vaghul & Zipperer (2016), I employ a two-way fixed effects framework to analyze the …

The passive solar lumber drying kiln design, developed by EE Senior Design Team 2317 is presented, tested, and discussed. The design incorporates solar power and a custom control system to dry 12’ lumber boards inside a shipping container much faster than air-drying methods, which can take up to a year for thorough drying, though this can be extended due to the unpredictability of weather events and conditions. This work presents the design as in the final report provided by the team, but provides a more detailed explanation and analysis of the microcontroller system, testing methods and outcomes, alternate solutions and …

Stringency In Occupational Licensing Requirements: Explanations And Effects, Nicholas Hall May 2023

Stringency In Occupational Licensing Requirements: Explanations And Effects, Nicholas Hall

Honors Scholar Theses

In this paper, I explore explanations for and effects of variation in stringency in occupational licensing requirements across states. Focusing on data on cosmetology, I first analyze the effect of characteristics of the professional licensing board, including its membership composition and department within the state government, on the regulations the board implements. I find evidence that the department of a board impacts its licensing fees, with health-based departments requiring lower fees than commerce- and general licensing-based departments. I then examine the effects of stringency on wages and the number of practitioners in an area. I find evidence that the number …
