Thirty questions were derived from the IMFNP and …

The Beast Lives Here, Kelli Kirkland May 2023

The Beast Lives Here, Kelli Kirkland

Honors Theses

A staple of the bildungsroman, or coming-of-age, genre is a loss of innocence, often through trauma, so it is only natural for our protagonist to grasp at whatever coping mechanism may offer them comfort. As a coming-of-age novel, The Beast Lives Here asks: How does folklore and the supernatural interact with young, impressionable protagonists who are desperate to find explanations for their pain? The Beast Lives Here follows teenage narrator August (Aggie) Cain as she and her best friend move from junior to senior year of high school. Her excitement, however, is cut short by her best friend's lengthy trip …

Questioning The Use Of Race And Sex-Based Statistics In Economic Loss Valuations In Tort Litigation: A Comparison Of Mississippi To New York, Caitlin Phillips May 2023

Questioning The Use Of Race And Sex-Based Statistics In Economic Loss Valuations In Tort Litigation: A Comparison Of Mississippi To New York, Caitlin Phillips

Honors Theses

In tort litigation, specifically catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases, forensic economists are employed to determine a plaintiff’s projected worklife and life expectancy, which is then presented to a jury as lost income. Often, projections of life expectancy and worklife use race and sex-based statistics. For example, a white female, on average, may live a significantly longer life than a black male. Additionally, said white female may, on average, work for fewer years than her male counterparts. In this research, case law of Mississippi and New York were read closely for mentions of race and sex-based statistics in forensic economics …

Linguistic Factors Modulating Gender Assignment In Spanish–English Bilingual Speech, Abel Cruz May 2023

Linguistic Factors Modulating Gender Assignment In Spanish–English Bilingual Speech, Abel Cruz

Modern Languages & Literature

Drawing on naturally-occurring bilingual speech from a well-defined codeswitching community in Southern Arizona, this study examined the influence of semantic gender (a.k.a. biological gender), analogical gender, and other-language phonemic cues in modulating gender assignment in Spanish–English codeswitched speech. Thirty-four Spanish–English early bilinguals completed a forced-choice elicitation task involving two codeswitching environments: Spanish determiner–English noun switches (Task 1) and English–Spanish switched copula constructions (Task 2). The results revealed that for human-denoting nouns, bilinguals assigned grammatical gender based on the presupposed sex of a noun's referent in both syntactic environments tested. As for inanimate nouns, bilinguals were more likely to assign masculine …

Does Disclosure Of Advertising Spending Help Investors And Analysts?, Sungkyun Moon, Kapil R. Tuli, Anirban Mukherjee May 2023

Does Disclosure Of Advertising Spending Help Investors And Analysts?, Sungkyun Moon, Kapil R. Tuli, Anirban Mukherjee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Publicly listed firms have the discretion to disclose (or not) advertising spending in their annual (10-K) reports. The disclosure of advertising spending can provide valuable information because advertising is a leading indicator of future performance. However, estimates of advertising spending are available from data providers, arguably mitigating the need for its formal disclosure. This study argues that firms’ disclosure of advertising spending provides more complete and public information and therefore lowers investor uncertainty about future firm performance (idiosyncratic risk). Empirical analyses show this effect is largely driven by the negative effect of disclosure of advertising spending on analyst uncertainty. Consistent …

School Committee Composition: Exploring The Role Of Parental And Female Representation In India, Panchali Guha May 2023

School Committee Composition: Exploring The Role Of Parental And Female Representation In India, Panchali Guha

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Motivation: The adoption of school-based management (SBM) reforms has led to the formation of local-level school committees in many low- and middle-income countries. These committees are usually created with the stated aim of giving parents or local community members a greater say in school management. Various studies have, however, highlighted difficulties with parental and female participation, casting doubt on the extent to which greater community representation improves school management. Purpose: The article examines empirically whether greater parental and female representation in Indian school management committees (SMCs) is associated with school improvement as measured by increases in the school-level provision of …

Slow Down. A Sound (E)Scape. A Sound Idea For Life, Nicholas Blackman May 2023

Slow Down. A Sound (E)Scape. A Sound Idea For Life, Nicholas Blackman

Postgraduate

What are the possibilities of 360 audio to enhance the benefits of sound and music? This paper and its accompanying audio piece explores the potential deepening of immersion through adding an attentional element via movement to the sounds and music in an audio soundscape. The paper will argue through literature review and reflection, and demonstrate through its audio content, that adding this spatial element to audio material gives the brain additional attentional anchors to follow and assists in deepening immersion as a result. Why does immersion matter? Listening to music has multiple effects on the structural and functional arrangement of …

Data-Driven Air Quality And Environmental Evaluation For Cattle Farms, Jennifer Hu, Rushikesh Jagtap, Rishikumar Ravichandran, Chitra Priyaa Sathya Moorthy, Nataliya Sobol, Jane Wu, Jerry Gao

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The expansion of agricultural practices and the raising of animals are key contributors to air pollution. Cattle farms contain hazardous gases, so we developed a cattle farm air pollution analyzer to count the number of cattle and provide comprehensive statistics on different air pollutant concentrations based on severity over various time periods. The modeling was performed in two parts: the first stage focused on object detection using satellite data of farm images to identify and count the number of cattle; the second stage predicted the next hour air pollutant concentration of the seven cattle farm air pollutants considered. The output …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Based Structure From Motion Technique For Precise Snow Depth Retrieval—Implication For Optimal Ground Control Point Deployment Strategy, Song Shu, Ok Youn Yu, Chris Schoonover, Hongxing Liu, Bo Yang

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based snow depth is mapped as the difference between snow-on and snow-off digital surface models (DSMs), which are derived using the structure from motion (SfM) technique with ground control points (GCPs). In this study, we evaluated the impacts of the quality and deployment of GCPs on the accuracy of snow depth estimates. For 15 GCPs in our study area, we surveyed each of their coordinates using an ordinary global positioning system (GPS) and a differential GPS, producing two sets of GCP measurements (hereinafter, the low-accuracy and high-accuracy sets). The two sets of GCP measurements were then incorporated …

Devouring The Milky Way Satellites: Modeling Dwarf Galaxies With Galacticus, Sachi Weerasooriya, Mia Sauda Bovill, Andrew Benson, Alexi M. Musick, Massimo Ricotti May 2023

Devouring The Milky Way Satellites: Modeling Dwarf Galaxies With Galacticus, Sachi Weerasooriya, Mia Sauda Bovill, Andrew Benson, Alexi M. Musick, Massimo Ricotti

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Dwarf galaxies are ubiquitous throughout the universe and are extremely sensitive to various forms of internal and external feedback. Over the last two decades, the census of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group and beyond has increased markedly. While hydrodynamic simulations (e.g., FIRE II, Mint Justice League) have reproduced the observed dwarf properties down to the ultrafaints, such simulations require extensive computational resources to run. In this work, we constrain the standard physical implementations in the semianalytic model Galacticus to reproduce the observed properties of the Milky Way satellites down to the ultrafaint dwarfs found in the Sloan Digital Sky …

How Can We Design Instruction To Support Student Reasoning About Physicists' Ethical Responsibilities In Society?, Alice Olmstead, Brianne Gutmann, Egla Ochoa-Madrid, Alexander Vasquez, Ciana Pike, Daniel Barringer

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

STEM professionals make decisions that impact society in a wide variety of ways. Making thoughtful decisions often requires them to consider a complex set of real-world implications that can impact multiple stakeholders, and there may not be a single "best"solution to be discovered. These decisions can also be political in nature. In contrast, science is often portrayed as being purely objective and apolitical. Physics instruction often reinforces this portrayal by focusing exclusively on physics content knowledge and skills. Some physics programs have been expanding to include technical skills that are relevant in the workforce, and this expansion likely benefits students …

Tcad Simulation Models, Parameters, And Methodologies For Β-Ga2o3 Power Devices, Hiu Yung Wong May 2023

Tcad Simulation Models, Parameters, And Methodologies For Β-Ga2o3 Power Devices, Hiu Yung Wong

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

β-Ga2O3 is an emerging material and has the potential to revolutionize power electronics due to its ultra-wide-bandgap (UWBG) and lower native substrate cost compared to Silicon Carbide and Gallium Nitride. Since β-Ga2O3 technology is still not mature, experimental study of β-Ga2O3 is difficult and expensive. Technology-Computer-Aided Design (TCAD) is thus a cost-effective way to study the potentials and limitations of β-Ga2O3 devices. In this paper, TCAD parameters calibrated to experiments are presented. They are used to perform the simulations in heterojunction p-NiO/n-Ga2O3 diode, Schottky diode, and normally-off Ga2O3 vertical FinFET. Besides the current-voltage (I-V) simulations, breakdown, capacitance-voltage (C-V), and short-circuit …

Conformation Of The Anterior Segment In Human Myopia, Hetal Buckhurst, Bernard Gilmartin, Robert Cubbidge, Nicola S. Logan May 2023

Conformation Of The Anterior Segment In Human Myopia, Hetal Buckhurst, Bernard Gilmartin, Robert Cubbidge, Nicola S. Logan

School of Health Professions

PurposeTopography of the in vivo anterior segment is of relevance in understanding its role in myopia and in the development of ocular surgical procedures. Using 3D magnetic resonance (MR) images of the human eye, regional variations in surface area (SA) and bulbosity of four anterior segment regions were investigated in association with refractive status (Rx), axial length (AL) and total ocular volume (OV).MethodsT2-weighted ocular MR images from 43 adults aged 18–40 years (mean ± SD; 28.65 ± 6.20) comprising 20 non-myopes (≥−0.50) 0.57 ± 1.38 and 23 myopes (<−0.50) −6.37 ± 4.23 MSE (D) were collected. 2D representations of each quadrant (superior-temporal [ST], superior-nasal [SN], inferior-temporal [IT] and inferior-nasal [IN]) of the anterior section (3.5–9 mm) were fitted with second-order polynomials. Polynomials were integrated and rotated about the x-axis to generate SA; dividing the SA by 4 provided relative quadrantial SA. The x2 coefficient provides indices of bulbosity. OV was derived from the 3D MRI scans. Rx and AL were measured using cycloplegic autorefraction and the Zeiss IOLMaster, respectively. One- and two-way repeated-measures ANCOVAs tested differences in SA and bulbosity for Rx, gender, ethnicity and age. Pearson's correlation coefficient tested the relationship between MRI-derived metrics and biometry.ResultsSignificant differences in SA were observed between quadrants (p < 0.001) with differences between ST versus IN, IN versus IT and SN versus IT. An interaction effect (p = 0.01) for Rx suggested smaller temporal (ST and IT) and larger nasal (SN and IN) SA in myopes. AL and myopic Rx were negative correlated (p < 0.05) with SA at IN, SN and IT. OV was significantly associated with SA at ST. Bulbosity showed no regional differences nor an effect of AL or Rx.ConclusionSignificant regional variation in SA exists across the anterior segment that is modulated by Rx and AL. It is unclear whether these structural characteristics are a precursor or consequence of myopia and may warrant investigation when developing biomechanical interventions.

Rethinking Party Autonomy In Trust Law, Stewart E. Sterk May 2023

Rethinking Party Autonomy In Trust Law, Stewart E. Sterk

Articles

The article critiques the current approach to party autonomy in trust law, particularly the freedom granted by the Second Restatement of Conflict of Laws for settlors to choose the governing law for their trusts. The author argues that this freedom, rooted in historically uniform trust laws, is now outdated due to the diversification of state trust laws, especially regarding issues like perpetual trusts and asset protection. The analysis advocates for a more restrictive approach to party autonomy, prioritizing the settlor's domicile and home state policies to prevent manipulation and ensure fairness, particularly for third parties affected by trust arrangements.

Perceptions Of Prenatal Care From Mississippi Mothers: The Role Of Race And Insurance Coverage, Brittney Clayborn May 2023

Perceptions Of Prenatal Care From Mississippi Mothers: The Role Of Race And Insurance Coverage, Brittney Clayborn

Honors Theses

Giving birth in America as an African American woman is a daunting and risky undertaking. African American women are three to four times more likely to die from giving birth and two times more likely to experience severe maternal morbidity than their White counterparts (Wang, Glazer, Sofaer, Balbierz, & Howell, 2020). The disparity seen in maternal health and mortality can partially be linked to other chronic health and medical factors; however, there are even disparities seen in those as well. Attention must be brought to the impact of race and socioeconomic status on the likelihood of survival after giving birth, …

Examining Financial Knowledge Levels Of Students Of Color Versus White Students, Anecia Flewellen May 2023

Examining Financial Knowledge Levels Of Students Of Color Versus White Students, Anecia Flewellen

Honors Theses

Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) focuses on the way that cognitive factors such as self-efficacy interact with contextual factors, like race, to predict goal setting behaviors (Lent, 2013). The SCCT framework has shown to predict academic goal setting like intention to graduate, with higher academic self-efficacy resulting in higher graduation intention (White & Parrone-McGovern, 2017; Wu, 2018). One contextual factor that has an ability to affect academic self-efficacy is financial stress, which includes student debt (White & Parrone-McGovern, 2017). Students who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) have more debt on average and a harder time paying off …

The Meaning Of The Mask: Darth Vader On The Screen And The Page, Brenna Renfroe May 2023

The Meaning Of The Mask: Darth Vader On The Screen And The Page, Brenna Renfroe

Honors Theses

Masks can be found throughout popular culture, and their roots trace back through history. Whether on the screen, the page of a comic book, the stage, or in the halls of a Comic-Con, masked faces are intriguing. Among the numerous masked faces that populate our imagination, few are as iconic and instantly recognizable as Darth Vader from Star Wars. Despite his popularity, most of the research devoted to masked characters has been interested in why heroes such as Batman wear masks. There is little research on why a tragic hero turned villain does so, since the connotation of masks seems …

Development Of A Novel Environmental Dna (Edna) Tool For Monitoring Vulnerable Freckled Guitarfish, Pseudobatos Lentiginosus, In The Western Central Atlantic, Sarah Toepfer

Honors Theses

Rhino-rays are the most threatened group of elasmobranchs, having experienced widespread declines due to mortalities in fisheries and habitat degradation. Within the Western Central Atlantic, there are two extant species of Rhino-rays, the Critically Endangered Smalltooth Sawfish, Pristis pectinata, and the Vulnerable Freckled Guitarfish, Pseudobatos lentiginosus. Although there is research committed to P. pectinata in this region, less is known about the distribution status of P. lentiginosus. Over the past 50 years, P. lentiginosus have undergone a presumed range contraction in U.S. waters; once found from North Carolina to Texas, and historically common in the north central …

Liberty Lettuce, Fertilizer Bombs, And The End Of Civilization: The American Far-Right’S Strange Relationship With Europe, Jordan K. Matthews May 2023

Liberty Lettuce, Fertilizer Bombs, And The End Of Civilization: The American Far-Right’S Strange Relationship With Europe, Jordan K. Matthews

Honors Theses

In 2016, the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville came to a violent end. American news outlets were left with scraps of rhetoric to piece together what would become a popular narrative going forward. Their conclusion was that the American far-right is heavily influenced by European ideas of civilization, race, and immigration. European nativist ideology is what inspired the people at Charlottesville as well as the numerous attacks on different racial groups that were carried out in the years to come. This thesis rejects all of that. The American far-right does not and has never had to be influenced by …

Tea Service: Queering Time And Creating Community, Lauren Wheeler May 2023

Tea Service: Queering Time And Creating Community, Lauren Wheeler

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the concept of queer temporality and the importance of community in a person’s quality of life. Contrast between traditional English tea service and unconventional, queered tea service is used in dualistic metaphor to explore the contrast of community with people who seek to uphold cisheteronormativity and with people who disrupt it. Further, tea can be seen in various contexts as a site of social resistance. Queer temporality can be defined as the nonlinear and unconventional uses of time which are experienced in opposition to cisheteronormative temporalities. The importance of community amongst queer individuals is emphasized through shared …

Variations In Thermoregulation Strategies Of Northern And Southern Populations Of Mischocyttarus Mexicanus, Taylor Guild May 2023

Variations In Thermoregulation Strategies Of Northern And Southern Populations Of Mischocyttarus Mexicanus, Taylor Guild

Honors Theses

Mischocyttarus mexicanus is a species of eusocial paper wasp that is found across much of the Southeastern coastal region of the United States. Contrasting wintering strategies have been seen in northern versus southern populations. Anecdotally, northern populations overwinter by clustering on top of palmetto fronds, their preferred nesting substrate, in a sort of "taco" shape, while southern populations stand on their nests that hang on the underside of the palmetto frond throughout the year. I tested three hypotheses related to the adaptive value of northern over-frond clustering behavior: 1) Over-frond clustering is thermoregulation related, meaning it would be temperature driven. …

“With All Deliberate Speed”: The Ironic Demise Of (And Hope For) Affirmative Action, Vinay Harpalani May 2023

“With All Deliberate Speed”: The Ironic Demise Of (And Hope For) Affirmative Action, Vinay Harpalani

Faculty Scholarship

Is affirmative action in university admissions about to end? As the United States Supreme Court prepares to decide lawsuits against Harvard and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (UNC), the outlook for race-conscious admissions policies is not good. Even before its recent rightward shift, the Court had long been hostile to such policies, and many observers think it will now overturn Grutter v. Bollinger and end them altogether. Such a ruling would be a painful and paradoxical twist for civil rights advocates. In a classic turn of Orwellian irony, the plaintiffs challenging affirmative action now call themselves Students for …

Cycle Time Reduction In Additive Manufacturing Using Peltier Thermoelectric Cooling Devices, Trevor Carlton May 2023

Cycle Time Reduction In Additive Manufacturing Using Peltier Thermoelectric Cooling Devices, Trevor Carlton

Honors College Theses

Thermoelectric cooling and the Peltier effect were discovered in 1834, over 188 years ago. Additionally, the first iterations of additive manufacturing (i.e., 3D printing) began in the early 1980s, more than 40 years ago. Despite these technologies’ age and years of advancements, the application of Peltier cooling-based devices in additive manufacturing has not yet been realized. These devices can be used for the active thermal management of print beds in 3D printers. Developing a mechanism to heat and cool a print bed can reduce the cycle time to manufacture a part. In 3D printing, waiting for the heated bed to …
