Beyond Positivism: The Emergence And Approaches Of Theatre Historiography In North America, Guanda Wu
Beyond Positivism: The Emergence And Approaches Of Theatre Historiography In North America, Guanda Wu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Beginning in the 1980s, under the influence of critical theories, theatre historians in North America began to critically reflect upon the historical legacy of Theaterwissenschaft (Theatre Studies). Scholars adoptedthe concept of “theatre historiography” to theorize research on theatre history. This intellectual move sought to explore methodologies that differ from a positivist approach to theatre history.Theatre historiography is concerned with the most essential assumptions, principles, and methodologies that determine how theatre history is produced. The emergence of theatre historiographyhas facilitated a renewed understanding of the essentialnature of theatre, materials for research in theatre history, and research subjects. From Mimesis To Self-Referentiality: Bertolt Brecht, Roland Barthes And Hans-Thies Lehmann On The “Exteriorization” Of Theatre, Yinghui Zhao
From Mimesis To Self-Referentiality: Bertolt Brecht, Roland Barthes And Hans-Thies Lehmann On The “Exteriorization” Of Theatre, Yinghui Zhao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
BertoltBrecht’s, RolandBarthes’ and Hans-ThiesLehmann’s uses of “theexterior” reflect their emphaseson theatrical signifiers, whichoutlinesthe relationship between mimetic theatre and self-referential theatre. Brecht advocates “exterior” performance and thinksthat actors do not have to feel the same as characters, affirming the difference between the signifier (the imitator) and the signified (the imitated). However, he pursues“scientific truth” and a real similarity between the signifier and the signified through exterior performance. In Barthes’ study of theatre, the distance between the signifier and the signified is further widened. Barthes uses an exaggerated “exteriorization” to hollow out depth and uses external languages to stimulate the audience’s comprehensive …
Contemporary Scenography And “Lower Senses”: Senses Of Touch, Smell And Taste And Synaesthesia As Theatrical Experiences, Xuefeng Zhu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The stage design of traditional European and American theatre belongs to the “visual field,” while the perceptual revolution of contemporary scenography aims to break the visual dominance and devise multi-sensory experiences. Behind the traditional scenography dominated mostly by vision and secondly by hearing is the perceptual hierarchy of Western civilization, hammered in especially by rationalism in modern times. Since the 1990s, however, contemporary theatre has turned to touch, smell and taste to provide embodied experiences that are inaccessible through virtual media such as film, television and the Internet. Considering the recent revival of “lower senses,” this article focuses on the …
Allusion And The Textual Form Of Parallel Prose, Jinsong Li
Allusion And The Textual Form Of Parallel Prose, Jinsong Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The construction of parallel prose largely depends on allusion. By virtue of a collage of previous texts, allusion in parallel prose not only engages in constructing new texts but also yields meaning, which enables parallel prose to demonstrate a modality of intertextuality. In a certain sense, the parallel prose is an aggregation of fragments of the revised previous texts, forming a new literary space as a result of the dialogues between the previous texts, the creator of parallel prose, and the reader. As allusion deconstructs and reconstructs the fragments of previous texts, there is a discrepancy between the appearance of allusion and …

Noise, Silence And Chorus: On The Soundscape Of Contemporary Western Theatre, Tian Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Questioning and challenging the ocularcentrismthat dominated traditional dramatic theatre, reconciling the tension between the visual and the auditory and other senses, and attempting to reconstruct a perceptual system with a holistic approach—these wereimportant orientations of avant-garde theatre in the twentieth century. In the context of the aural turn, sound design has become an independent department of the theatre, and its function shifted from providing technical support for decorative sound effects to exploring the performativityof sound itself, especially with an emphasis on non-semantic sound. Noise, silence and chorus in contemporary Western theatre not only demonstrate the rapidly changing sound environment of …
The Modernizing Process Of Theoretical Studies In Ancient Literary Genres, Shihai He
The Modernizing Process Of Theoretical Studies In Ancient Literary Genres, Shihai He
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
With a long history and a solid foundation, the study of Chinese literary genres has long been at the centre of literary scholarship. However, under the impact of Western scholarship in the late Qing and Republican periods, this tradition of genre studies was gradually overshadowed and marginalized. It was not until the 1980s that it began to recover and rapidly developed into the most academic frontier with great academic growth and attention. In terms of the overall research pattern, scholars have paid more attention to the forms and history of genres, therebygivingrisetorich achievements. However, the discussion of its concepts and …

The Chinese Paradigm Of Comparative Literature, Qingben Li
The Chinese Paradigm Of Comparative Literature, Qingben Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Developed from “elucidation studies”of the Chinese school of comparative literature advocated bysomeChinese scholars from Hong Kong and Taiwan in the 1970s, “cross-cultural interpretation” now can be considered as the Chinese paradigm, which breaks the Sino-Western dualism by following the reconciling means and pursuing pluralistic universalism. This Chinese paradigm isnot only distinct from the French school’s cultural centralism exemplified by “influence studies”, but also different from the American school’s cultural universalism as indicated in “parallel studies”. With its emphasis on the integration of internal and external, aesthetic and cultural research, the Chinese paradigm is also distinct from the external and empirical approaches …

China Questions In Foreign Literature And Theory Studies: Joseph Hillis Miller’S “End Of Literature” And Its Critical Reception In China, Dandan Liang, Dejin Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This article addresses the problems of foreign literature and theory studies in China, focusing particularly on the “China questions” since the twenty-first century. Through a case study of Joseph Hillis Miller’s “end of literature” and its critical reception in China, this article reveals the China questions of the academic community behind the Miller phenomenon, that is, “emphasizing professionalism while ignoring thought”,“stressing academic research over voice in the academic community”, and “practicing criticism butno critical thinking.” Chinese academic community should makeefforts to combine the translation of foreign literature and theory with the construction of a Chinese critical discourse and endeavor to …
Americanization Of Continental European Theory: Paradigm Shift In Hundred-Year Euro-American Literary Studies, Kang Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The knowledge and disciplinary formation of foreign literature, world literature and comparative literature started in Western Europe inthe beginning of the 20thcentury, institutionalized in Anglo-American academia around the mid-20thand widely dispersed across the world, including China. This essay traces the genealogy of these disciplines from the perspectives of broad socio-political history, intellectual history, and academic history, focusing on the dispersion, transformation and Americanization of continental European theory (particularly French) of the 1960s onwards. The essay examines the U.S. academic professionalization and institutionalization, as well as politicization, or further radicalization, of the Continental European theory and their global implications.

Art and Art History Honors Papers
This work uses the methodologies of both art history and medical sociology through the ‘syndemic’ framework to engage in close readings of two selected artworks, Exit (1997) by Nancer LeMoins and Violation of Africa (1984) by Affrekka Jefferson. An interdisciplinary approach to these works enables consideration of how multiple marginalized identities—i.e., living with a stigmatized illness, being a woman, being LGBTQIA+, being a person of color—appear in visual art and shape illness experience; these ideas are investigated through a formal and iconographic reading of the selected artworks. Placing art as the foundation of this analysis reveals its astounding impact and …

Achievement Motivation And Body Competence As Predictors For Nonhypnotic Suggestibility, Ethan Cohen
Honors Projects in Applied Psychology
The present study aims to discover relationships between suggestibility and two predictor variables identified as achievement motivation, and body consciousness. The significance of this study is immense in placebo research due to the studied relationship of suggestibility as a predictor for placebo susceptibility. Relationships between both predictor variables and placebo susceptibility have also been established through research, but there remains a gap in the connection between these variables and suggestibility. The present study administered a survey to participants (N=103), using the Shortened Suggestibility Scale (SSS), Body Consciousness Questionnaire (BCQ), and the Achievement Motives Scale (AMS-R) as the measure of suggestibility, …

Lyria was one of a small handful of women who graduated from a Louisiana law school in the 1930’s. Despite the employment barriers facing female attorneys, she went on to become one of the first female law clerks in both the federal and state judiciary. To date, Lyria’s story has not been told. I have recently discovered, however, that Lyria’s children and grandchildren preserved her letters to her family. They are a treasure trove of information about a woman whose career took her from rural Louisiana to Louisiana’s highest court as well as the post-war ruins of Nazi Germany. The …

Raise The Bar: A Study Of Motivation And Locus Of Control In Relation To Exercise Adherence, Zachary Bertolino
Raise The Bar: A Study Of Motivation And Locus Of Control In Relation To Exercise Adherence, Zachary Bertolino
Honors Projects in Business
This paper will examine factors attributed to exercise adherence, and what relationships exist between motivation (intrinsic and extrinsic), locus of control (internal and external) and adherence. The purpose of this study is to determine what combination of motivation and locus of control is the best predictor of exercise adherence. The hypothesis states that an individual who is intrinsically motivated and has an internal locus of control will be most likely to maintain exercise behavior over an extended period. Existing literature has shown that both intrinsic sources of motivation and an internal locus of control are related to adherence in other …

Challenging Perceptions: Actual Vs Perceived Generational Differences In Workplace Concepts Conducted During Covid 19, Jacob Slide
Honors Projects in Management
With three different generations in the workforce (Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z), it is important for managers to understand what each generation expects in the workplace. This is especially important when managing intergenerational teams. As the only true digital natives enter the workforce, employers must select managers who can manage the conflict that arises from differences, actual or perceived, that often stem from poor communication and a lack of understanding. This study, grounded in Generational Cohort Theory and replicating the Lester et al. study conducted in 2012 with Baby Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials, aims to examine whether participants’ …

Detecting Covid-19 Misinformation On Social Media, Jason Michaud
Honors Projects in Data Science
There have been many studies conducted over the last few years that have attempted to uncover the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the largest areas of concern with COVID-19 is misinformation, as it is a novel virus that many report on, even if unqualified to do so. This study aims to predict whether a Tweet can be classified as misinformation, and then analyze the differences between Tweets that are labeled as either misinformation or not by this model. Machine learning models are created and validated using the CovidMis20 dataset as a training set. The dataset to be labeled …

Supervisor Gender, Culture And Employee Creativity: The Mediating Role Of Interaction Frequency, Holly Chadwick
Supervisor Gender, Culture And Employee Creativity: The Mediating Role Of Interaction Frequency, Holly Chadwick
Honors Projects in Management
Despite the fact that women have consistently proved that they excel through transformational leadership styles (Eagly, et al., 2003; Eagly & Johannesen-Schmidt, 2001), a type of leadership that drives creativity in individuals, they remain underrepresented in organizations globally (Michalidis, et al 2012). Thus, it is important to understand how creativity is influenced by leadership, and how leadership is influenced by gender and frequency of supervisor-employee interaction. This study utilizes a self-reporting survey which was distributed to several companies involved in federal direct investment within China. The countries accounted for in the study were Germany, Japan, and South Korea, and results …
