Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) remains among the most influential and popular classical music composers. Health problems significantly impacted his career as a composer and pianist, including progressive hearing loss, recurring gastrointestinal complaints, and liver disease. In 1802, Beethoven requested that following his death, his disease be described and made public. Medical biographers have since proposed numerous hypotheses, including many substantially heritable conditions. Here we attempt a genomic analysis of Beethoven in order to elucidate potential underlying genetic and infectious causes of his illnesses. We incorporated improvements in ancient DNA methods into existing protocols for ancient hair samples, enabling the sequencing …

Understanding China's Cryptocurrency Stance: Analysis Of The Recent Developments And Future Prospects, Zhengchun Wan
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog
In September 2021, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), China’s central bank, in conjunction with nine other state bodies, including the police and the supreme court, issued a statement regarding the country’s stance on cryptocurrency businesses. There, regulators have explicitly stated that all cryptocurrency trading, exchanges, and investments—both crypto-to-crypto and crypto-to-fiat—are prohibited, whether they are carried out through domestic or international platforms. Despite China’s official strong hostilities toward cryptocurrencies, some believe the policy might change soon.

Multi-Specific Calibration Of The B Isotope Proxy In Calcareous Red Algae For Ph Reconstruction, Giulia Piazza, Eduardo Paredes, Valentina Alice Bracchi, Leopoldo David Pena, Jason Hall-Spencer, Chiara Ferrara, Isabel Cacho, Daniela Basso
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Calcareous red algae have calcified cell walls constituted by high-Mg calcite or aragonite (Morse et al., 2006). They are considered suitable paleoclimate archives due to their worldwide distribution and their longevity through indeterminate growth (Kamenos et al., 2008). Boron isotopes (δ11B) measured in their calcified thallus are considered a pH proxy (Hemming and Hanson, 1992). In seawater, boron occurs as boric acid and borate ion. Both species are enriched in 11B as pH increases, with boric acid characterized by an enrichment factor of 27‰ compared to borate. The boron isotope proxy theory states that borate is exclusively incorporated in the …

Biophysical Flocculation Reduces Variability Of Cohesive Sediment Settling Velocity, L Ye, Ja Penaloza-Giraldo, Aj Manning, J Holyoke, T-J Hsu
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Biophysical cohesion, introduced predominantly by Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) during mineral flocculation in subaqueous environments, plays important role in morphodynamics, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. However, the mechanism of how EPS functioning with cohesive particles and affects settling behaviors remain poorly understood. We measure initial flocculation rate, floc size and settling velocity of mineral and artificial EPS (Xanthan gum) mixtures. Combining results from these and previous studies demonstrate coherent intensification of EPS-related flocculation compare with those of pure mineral and oil-mineral mixtures. Importantly, the presence of EPS fundamentally changes floc structure and reduces variability of settling velocity. Measured data shows …

Reliable detection of counterfeit electronic, electrical, and electromechanical devices within critical information and communications technology systems ensures that operational integrity and resiliency are maintained. Counterfeit detection extends the device’s service life that spans manufacture and pre-installation to removal and disposition activity. This is addressed here using Distinct Native Attribute (DNA) fingerprinting while considering the effects of sub-Nyquist sampling on DNA-based discrimination. The sub-Nyquist sampled signals were obtained using factor-of-205 decimation on Nyquist-compliant WirelessHART response signals. The DNA is extracted from actively stimulated responses of eight commercial WirelessHART adapters and metrics introduced to characterize classifier performance. Adverse effects of sub-Nyquist decimation …

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
The myctophid genus Diaphus is known for having highly developed head photophores and nasal rosettes. The head photophores of Diaphus are typically enlarged and vary between species and possibly sexes. Diaphus dumerilii is also a macrosmatic species with large olfactory organs. The aim of this study is to quantify the variances in location, size, and shape of the head photophores and nasal rosettes between selected individuals from Diaphus dumerilii to understand how these variances relate to morphometric measurements such as body length, inferred maturity and nasal rosette size and shape. Diaphus possess many highly conserved traits that are useful for …

A Predictive Study Of Self-Regulated Learning In Teacher Candidates And Praxis Examination Achievement, Ayanna Danielle Perkins
A Predictive Study Of Self-Regulated Learning In Teacher Candidates And Praxis Examination Achievement, Ayanna Danielle Perkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Nationally, teacher candidates struggle to pass the Praxis examination, which they need to be licensed. Little research has been done to examine the characteristics and learning strategies of teacher candidates who pass and who do not pass the Praxis examination. Studies have shown benefits in the use of self-regulation and achievement in courses and on other examinations. Zimmerman’s (1989) self-regulated learning theory describes how teacher candidates engage in self-directed planning, learning, and reflecting to achieve a goal. The purpose of this dissertation is to describe the purpose, method, design, and analysis of a predictive study to determine whether self-regulation, as …

Work-Life Balance And The Perceived Value Of Rewards When Faculty Consider Promotions In Administration, Judi Waldrip
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between work-life balance and faculty perceptions of promotions in academia using Vroom’s (1964) Expectancy Theory of Motivation as the theoretical framework. The study was conducted at two universities in the Southeast, and all faculty were invited to participate in an online survey. Multiple regression analysis was used to test three hypotheses relating to expectancy, instrumentality, and valence. These three factors were used for the dependent variables. The same independent variables were used for each regression model, and they included age, gender, tenure status, marital status, children under the age of …

Performance Of 3d Printed Columns Using Self-Sensing Cementitious Composites, Cynthia D. Atkinson, Farhad Aslani
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Self-sensing cementitious composites can be used as an economical method of structural health monitoring. This is achieved by using the piezoresistivity effect to assist in the detection of defects and enabling repairs to be conducted early which can therefore avoid structural failures. This study uses an established self-sensing cementitious composite mix to 3D print column to examine its structural performance and sensing capabilities in components of large-scale concrete structures. An extrusion-based 3D printer was used to print hollow square column segments. These segments were then joined and filled with steel rebar reinforcement and cast concrete. Another column was created using …

Transannular Functionalization Of Multiple C(Sp3)-H Bonds Of Tropane Via An Alkene-Bridged Palladium(I) Dimer, Ellen Y. Aguilera, En Chih Liu, Scott M. Thullen, Melanie S. Sanford
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
This Communication describes the Pd-catalyzed C(sp3)-H functionalization of a tropane derivative to generate products with functionalization at two (β/γ) or three (β/γ/β) different sites on the alicyclic amine core. These reactions proceed via an initial dehydrogenation to generate an alkene product that can react further to form a Pd(I) alkene-bridged dimer. Functionalization of this dimer affords β/γ/β-functionalized allylic arylation and allylic acetoxylation products.

45 Senolytic Therapy Transiently Reduces Inflammatory Markers In Primary Blood Mononuclear Cells Of Individuals With Early Alzheimer’S Disease: Exploring The Conserved Transcriptional Response To Adversity As A Biomarker For Disease State, Valentina R. Garbarino, Peng Xu, Bin Zhang, Mitzi M. Gonzales, Miranda E. Orr
School of Medicine Publications
OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Determine if the Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity transcriptomic profile established in primary blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of chronically stress caregivers, is present in individuals with early Alzheimer’s disease. Chronic stress is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s, and may be an untapped biomarker for disease risk and pathology.
METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: To collect preliminary data on the Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity profile in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, we were able to utilize primary blood mononuclear cell samples from a small open label pilot study called Senolytic Therapy to Modulate the Progression of Alzheimer’s Disease, designed to clear stressed senescent …
A Unified Two Independent Stress Variable Approach To Moisture-Change-Induced Unsaturated Soil Volume Change, Sandra Houston, Xiong Zhang
A Unified Two Independent Stress Variable Approach To Moisture-Change-Induced Unsaturated Soil Volume Change, Sandra Houston, Xiong Zhang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In 1968, Matyas and Radhakrishna introduced the concept of the state surface, demonstrating that unsaturated soil volume change is dependent on two independent stress state variables, net total stress and suction. For decades the basic theory of unsaturated soils has been known, and a holistic view of the elastoplastic response of unsaturated soils, based on a modified state surface approach (MSSA), makes it clear that a method accounting for independent roles of net total stress and suction is required to quantify volume change of unsaturated soils. Still, reliance on pre-unsaturated-soil-mechanics-era methods persists, particularly within the geotechnical practice community. Unsaturated soil …
Calibration Of Bbm Parameters Using The Modified State Surface Approach, Xiong Zhang, Beshoy Riad, Eduardo E. Alonso
Calibration Of Bbm Parameters Using The Modified State Surface Approach, Xiong Zhang, Beshoy Riad, Eduardo E. Alonso
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Barcelona Basic Model (BBM) developed by Alonso et al. [1] is the first and the mostwidely used elasto-plastic model for unsaturated soils. The BBM successfully explained many key features of unsaturated soils and received extensive acceptance. However, there is lack of a well-establishedmethod for selecting parameter values for the BBM from laboratory tests, although a variety of methods have been recently developed for calibrating model parameters for the BBM. Concerns still exist on the correctness and robustness of such parameter value selection procedures. The above statements were evidenced by a recent benchmark exercise on selection of parameter values for …

Redesign A Pet Bottle: Creating Possibilities For Future Recycling, Shen Liu
Theses
As a case study, I evaluated the difficulties faced by millennials in recycling PET bottles and their potential expectations for recycling systems. My design includes a visually appealing, compressible PET bottle with a delicate appearance. It helps consumers save four-fifths of their storage space during recycling. That means consumers can easily carry it around until they are ready to recycle. This change is more likely to improve the storage efficiency of bottles and the possibility of bottle recycling. In addition, designing a brand is an important step in building customer trust in sustainable design, helping to connect consumers with their …
