Does Competency-Based Educational Elearning Improve Medical Assistant Knowledge And Performance In Blood Pressure Measurement And Recognition Of Elevated Bp Readings?, Janice Burkybile

Anna Vaughn School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Inaccurate blood pressure measurement techniques can severely impact patient health, from missed diagnoses to medical mismanagement with the potential development of cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. Researchers have reported for decades that all skill levels of healthcare providers perform inaccurate blood pressure measurement techniques. This problem can be attributed to one-time instruction with no refresher follow-up and no standardization of technique. Competency-based education facilitates healthcare providers to achieve competency in knowledge and performance of learned new skills and refresher training. Ultimately, competency-based education develops lifelong learners resulting in improved patient outcomes. The educational intervention was a thirty-minute eLearning codeveloped …

Nato Allies Should Take Canada’S Lead And Spend Less On Defense, Erika Simpson Apr 2023

Nato Allies Should Take Canada’S Lead And Spend Less On Defense, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

In the article "NATO allies should take Canada’s lead and spend less on defense," Erika Simpson discusses Canada’s defense spending in relation to NATO’s two-percent-of-GDP target. Although Canada appears to lag in military spending when expressed as a percentage of GDP, it ranks high on a per capita basis. Simpson argues that NATO should consider Canada's broader contributions to peace and security, beyond just military expenditures. She highlights Canada’s new military spending commitments, including the purchase of F-35 fighter jets, and critiques the pressure from the U.S. for allies to meet the spending target. The article advocates for a reevaluation …

Occupational Therapy's Role In Relapse Prevention Within Substance Abuse Recovery, Kristy L. Riffe

MOT Student Capstones

The devastating rate of relapse continues to impact the roles, occupational participation, and occupational performance of individuals in recovery. The purpose of this capstone project was to positively impact local substance abuse recovery programs by increasing their knowledge and understanding of occupational therapy's (OT) role in relapse prevention within substance abuse recovery using an evidence-based educational in-service presentation. The educational in-service described OT, the common reasons for relapse, evidence-based statistics related to relapse, the effects that substance use has on occupational performance and participation, evidence-based OT interventions, and the benefits of OT in relapse prevention to improve the knowledge and …

Behind The Scenes Of The 2021 Hollywood Labor Unrest, Kimberly Shely Apr 2023

Behind The Scenes Of The 2021 Hollywood Labor Unrest, Kimberly Shely

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

In 2021, the Hollywood guild International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) negotiated a new contract with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). IATSE had enjoyed a relatively peaceful labor existence in its 128 years. However, after negotiations with AMPTP stalled in 2021, IATSE held a vote to strike. The IATSE voters authorized a strike if negotiations did not produce an agreement.

If IATSE had initiated a strike, productions would have effectively shut down. If Hollywood productions shut down, the industry would suffer millions in lost profits, employees would risk an unpaid strike, and viewers would likely see …

Paradigms For Foreign Tech-Platforms Regulation: U.S. Options After The Tiktok Saga, Zhining Zhang Apr 2023

Paradigms For Foreign Tech-Platforms Regulation: U.S. Options After The Tiktok Saga, Zhining Zhang

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

The heated discussion stirred up by the U.S. regulatory actions against TikTok continues to this day. The nearly predatory popularity of this Chinese application has raised people’s awareness that the country is in urgent need of a fully developed policy in order to deal with the surge of robust foreign digital platforms.

This article gives the contour of the latest development of theories regarding the foreign tech-platforms regulation. Three contemporary frameworks are reviewed. The first laissez faire paradigm inherits the values of early neoliberalism to prevent a “Splinternet,” but its inaction fails to deal with novel security threats ranging from …

The Effect Of Youth Sports Participation On Health Outcomes For Immigrants In The United States, Emma Kennedy Apr 2023

The Effect Of Youth Sports Participation On Health Outcomes For Immigrants In The United States, Emma Kennedy

Honors Theses

My study investigates the relationship between youth sports participation and health outcomes for immigrants using a quantitative statistical analysis of secondary data. Given the theory behind the relationships between physical activity level, sense of community, and health outcomes, I test the hypothesis that immigrants are positively impacted by youth sports participation on a significantly higher level compared to non-immigrants. Using Stata as my statistical analysis software tool, I measure the associations between immigrant status, sports participation, and various indicators of health such as BMI and reports of chronic illness. I found that sports participation is associated with improved general health …

Does Oxybenzone Affect The Development Of Sea Urchins Up To The Gastrula Stage, And What Do We Do About It?, Claire Crozier Apr 2023

Does Oxybenzone Affect The Development Of Sea Urchins Up To The Gastrula Stage, And What Do We Do About It?, Claire Crozier

Honors Projects

Understanding the effects of anthropogenic factors, such as oxybenzone, on sea urchins is extremely important to protect the growth of coral reefs- the ocean’s hotspot for biodiversity. Spawning of sea urchins, Lytechinus variegatus, was induced and eggs were fertilized in different concentrations of oxybenzone contaminated water. 48 hours later, data was collected underneath a light microscope. Observations of the data indicate that oxybenzone negatively affects sea urchin development up until the gastrula stage. Using both my data and knowledge from standing literature, I decided to write a policy analysis paper to answer the question “what should we do regarding sunscreen …

Comparison Of Globalfiler Pcr Amplification Inhibition Due To Humic Acid And Canine Dna, Mckinzie Bundy Apr 2023

Comparison Of Globalfiler Pcr Amplification Inhibition Due To Humic Acid And Canine Dna, Mckinzie Bundy

Honors Projects

To obtain a DNA profile from a crime scene sample, the DNA must undergo amplification through the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The PCR process can be inhibited by factors that increase DNase I activity or by factors that interfere with Taq polymerase binding to the DNA. This study compares inhibition to the PCR process caused by dog DNA with inhibition caused by humic acid. The GlobalFiler PCR Amplification Kit was tested using mixtures of dog DNA and human control DNA and mixtures of humic acid and human control DNA. The profiles obtained from these mixtures were then analyzed for instances …

Characterization Of Toxoplasma Gondii Calcium Regulator Proteins Tggt1_253640 And Tggt1_222060 For Toxoplasma Gondii Growth And Invasion, Abigail Delapenha Apr 2023

Characterization Of Toxoplasma Gondii Calcium Regulator Proteins Tggt1_253640 And Tggt1_222060 For Toxoplasma Gondii Growth And Invasion, Abigail Delapenha

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Toxoplasma gondii is an opportunistic apicomplexan parasite infecting humans and livestock. Infection in immunocompromised individuals can cause neurological damage and infection during pregnancy can lead to fetal death. These parasites engage in a complex life cycle, involving repeated invasion of the host cell and egress from the host cell. Calcium signaling is an important regulatory mechanism for many essential processes in the parasite, including gliding motility (actomyosin-dependent mode of motion), invasion, and egress. Our work here focuses on two previously uncharacterized calcium regulator proteins (TGGT1_253640 and TGGT1_222060). To characterize the role of these proteins in parasite viability and calcium regulation, …

The Theatre Of Math: The Stage As A Tool For Abstract Math Education, Blaine Hudak Apr 2023

The Theatre Of Math: The Stage As A Tool For Abstract Math Education, Blaine Hudak

Honors Projects

So often in the education of Mathematics does instruction solely consist of the lecture. While this can be an effective method of communicating the ideas of math, it leaves much to be desired in gathering the interest and intrigue of those who have not dedicated their lives to the study of the subject. Theatre, by contrast, is a tool that has been used in the past as means of teaching complicated and difficult to understand moral and emotional subjects. While Theatre and Mathematics have been used in combination many times in the past, it is most often done in the …

Gender And Voice, Maia Garbrandt Apr 2023

Gender And Voice, Maia Garbrandt

Honors Projects

Gender dysphoria is a psychological condition characterized by distress or discomfort because of a disparity between a person's gender identity and the sex assigned at birth. The project’s goal was to find the relationship between voice and gender dysphoria using a case study approach with a small group of transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender fluid individuals using quantitative data and informal qualitative analysis. Four participants completed quantitative surveys that assessed their voice-related quality of life, and their speech was analyzed. In addition, qualitative interviews were conducted to contextualize participants' experiences with their voices and gender dysphoria. According to the findings …

Targeting The Gap In Mental Health Advocacy For First-Year College Students, Hailey Kurtz Apr 2023

Targeting The Gap In Mental Health Advocacy For First-Year College Students, Hailey Kurtz

Honors Projects

The transition from high school to attending a university has been shown to have an impact on the mental health and well-being of first-year university students. First-year students struggle with anxiety and depression in relation to being in a new environment, feeling lonely, fitting in, and taking more academically rigorous coursework. Current students have an awareness of what mental health and well-being resources on their campus are available to them, but such resources are not widely used, though a majority of students indicate that they do or have struggled with their mental health. This indicates that though students are struggling …

Teaching About The Global Refugee Crisis, Melissa Kafer Apr 2023

Teaching About The Global Refugee Crisis, Melissa Kafer

Honors Projects

Around the world, there are more than 30 million refugees (UNHCR, 2023) facing language barriers, cultural differences, prejudice, racism, and xenophobia. The number of admitted refugees in 2022 has more than doubled since 2021 (Duffin, 2022), and yet, many Americans do not know or understand the global refugee crisis. There are misconceptions in America that cause lack of empathy, bias, and prejudice towards refugees. Through the creation of four lesson plans, this research project aims to discover Americans’ misunderstandings regarding refugees and teach them about the crisis to remedy the misconceptions. This study includes a literature review detailing appropriate teaching …

The Case Of La Escuela Smart Academy: How Legislation And Incentives Can Aid The Transition From Bicultural To Bilingual Education, Fidelina Valverde-Rivera Apr 2023

The Case Of La Escuela Smart Academy: How Legislation And Incentives Can Aid The Transition From Bicultural To Bilingual Education, Fidelina Valverde-Rivera

Honors Projects

As the Latinx population in the United States continues to rise, La Escuela SMART Academy — a bicultural school in Toledo, Ohio — serves as just one example of how educational systems are seeking to cater to their respective needs. Previous research provides us with information explaining why bilingual education is valuable and worthy of promotion — including cognitive, cultural, linguistic, and economic benefits — as well as best practices. Using this information, I create a set of conditions that, when met, have the best potential of yielding an effective bilingual institution. In order to determine where La Escuela SMART …

Student Movements, Politics, And Policy In Chile, 2001 – 2012, Leesa Rasp Apr 2023

Student Movements, Politics, And Policy In Chile, 2001 – 2012, Leesa Rasp

Dissertations

Chile has frequently been touted as an economic miracle, the “Jaguar of Latin America”. Boasting the strongest economy in South America, due to severe neoliberal economic structural adjustments made under the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet, it has long been held up as the perfect exemplar of economic growth and stability, as well as the poster child for the effectiveness of neoliberal economics. After the re-establishment of democracy in 1990, political conditions improved as well; the country enjoyed a decade of stability and peace under its first two democratically-elected governments.

Yet, beginning approximately ten years after the transition to democracy, …
