Mechanical Engineering ETDs

This project will design, fabricate, and test a magnetoelastic nickel-iron-cobalt alloy resonator for ground fault detection applications, specifically in photovoltaic systems. The electrodeposition technique will be used to fabricate the proposed resonator as it enables a precise manufacturing process. It allows for better control and optimization of material properties (magnetic, mechanical, and electrical) while facilitating the necessary dimensions. A great deal of study and experimentation will go into the electrolyte development when dealing with challenges like intrinsic stress and surface defects within the film. Hull cell analysis will be done to study the composition of the material in different electrochemical …

A Remembrance Project: The Lynching Of Brack Kinley And Luther Durrett, Addison Rogers Apr 2023

A Remembrance Project: The Lynching Of Brack Kinley And Luther Durrett, Addison Rogers

Undergraduate Theses

From 1882 to 1968, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) estimates that 4,743 lynching’s occurred in the U.S. While other organizations report a slightly different number, the harsh reality of terror and violence remains the same. These violent acts of murder were used as a mechanism by white mobs to promote terror and enforce control upon the black community. Despite the presence of terror and violence in our current society, little is taught about such history and the people who were murdered. Instead of an emphasis on the actual history and the lives lost, the emphasis …

Effects Of Guided Journaling On Nursing Clinical Judgment During An Externship, Jaclyn Parrill Apr 2023

Effects Of Guided Journaling On Nursing Clinical Judgment During An Externship, Jaclyn Parrill

Undergraduate Theses

Background: There is longstanding discussion concerning the competency of novice nurses who passed the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) and their ability to practice safely. Nursing clinical judgment (CJ), also known as critical thinking or clinical decision-making, accounts for more than 46% of daily tasks nurses perform in their first year (Hensel, 2020, p. 128). Guided reflective journaling is one active learning strategy that encourages students to reflect on what they have learned, anticipate future needs, and enhance clinical judgment skills (Meijer, 2021, p. 9, 11). This qualitative pilot study follows one nursing student throughout a student nurse extern program …

Export Capacity And Capital Stock Augmentation Through Imports: Evidence From Sub-Saharan African Countries, Catherine Y. Co Apr 2023

Export Capacity And Capital Stock Augmentation Through Imports: Evidence From Sub-Saharan African Countries, Catherine Y. Co

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the capital goods imports of Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries from 2002 to 2017. The composition of capital goods imports has become less diverse over time in more than half of the countries studied. Colonial ties no longer determine the sourcing of capital goods as China is now the top source. Trade gravity regressions using the Poisson pseudo-maximum-likelihood estimator show that bilateral exports of non-primary products by SSA countries and their low-income peers are associated with increased net stock of imported general-purpose capital goods. Additionally, there is evidence that the net stock of some types of imported equipment …

Japan: Where Did All The People Go? An Empirical Study On Economic And Social Impacts On Low Fertility In Japan, Sasha Heasley Apr 2023

Japan: Where Did All The People Go? An Empirical Study On Economic And Social Impacts On Low Fertility In Japan, Sasha Heasley

Business and Economics Honors Papers

This project analyzed potential impacts on the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in Japan (2010 and 2015), which is dealing with both a declining population and an ageing population in parallel. Results indicate that income per person has the largest impact on TFR, and it is highly considered when making fertility decisions. Results also show that government policies are largely ineffective in impacting TFR. Results were obtained through two panel regressions and two Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions, in which TFR was the dependent variable.

The Utilization Of Depression Screening Tools In Patients With Diabetes Type 2, Hanna Book, Kennedy Eldridge, Margaret Harvey Phd, Aprn, Acnp-Bc, Chfn, Artangela Henry Dnp, Agacnp-Bc, Fnp-C, Laura Reed Dnp, Fnp-Bc

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background

Diabetes and depression are highly prevalent and concerning conditions impacting millions worldwide. Evidence-based guidelines recommend regular depression screening of individuals with type II diabetes (DM2) to appropriately diagnose and treat depression and proactively enhance clinical outcomes. The gold standard for determining depression in patients with chronic disease is the diagnostic clinical interview; however, many clinicians have turned to brief, self-reported screening tools such as the PHQ-2 and the PHQ-9 whose use are recommended by evidence-based guidelines. This study aims to assess the utilization of the PHQ-2 and PHQ-9 versus no screening on DM2 patients in a primary care setting. …

Augmenting Project Echo For Opioid Use Disorder With Data-Informed Quality Improvement, Owen B. Murray, Marcy A. Doyle, Bethany M. Mcleman, Lisa A. Marsch, Elizabeth C. Saunders, Katherine Cox, Delitha Watts, Jeanne Ryer

Faculty Publications

Background

National opioid-related overdose fatalities totaled 650,000 from 1999 to 2021. Some of the highest rates occurred in New Hampshire, where 40% of the population lives rurally. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD; methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone) have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing opioid overdose and mortality. Methadone access barriers disproportionally impact rural areas and naltrexone uptake has been limited. Buprenorphine availability has increased and relaxed regulations reduces barriers in general medical settings common in rural areas. Barriers to prescribing buprenorphine include lack of confidence, inadequate training, and lack of access to experts. To address these barriers, learning collaboratives have trained …

Macroprudential policies are increasingly being used in various countries after the global financial crisis in 2008. One of the macroprudential policies in Indonesia is the motor vehicle loan down payment policy. This study discusses the impact of the down payment policy on the growth of banking motor vehicle loans in Q1 2011 to Q4 2019. Using the fixed effect model method, the study was conducted on all banks that provided motor vehicle loans during the study period. The results indicate that down payment policy has significant impact on the growth of banking motor vehicle loans. The growth of motor vehicle …

Plant Sentience: A Hypothesis Based On Shaky Premises, Carel Ten Cate Apr 2023

Plant Sentience: A Hypothesis Based On Shaky Premises, Carel Ten Cate

Animal Sentience

Plants may produce fascinating behavioural phenomena for which the label ‘cognitive process’ may be applicable, at least by some definitions. Segundo-Ortin & Calvo (2023) base their hypothesis that plants might be sentient on the premise of demonstrated presence of cognitive complexity. However, the way phenomena are ascribed, and how the term ‘cognitive’ is used by Segundo-Ortin & Calvo, deviates from the common practice in studies of animal cognition, implying greater complexity than seems justified. It thus provides a questionable basis for attributing sentience to plants.

Plant Sentience: "Feeling" Or Biological Automatism?, Andrea Mastinu Apr 2023

Plant Sentience: "Feeling" Or Biological Automatism?, Andrea Mastinu

Animal Sentience

Sentience refers to the ability of an organism to have subjective experiences such as sensations, emotions and awareness. Whereas some animals, including humans, are widely recognized as sentient, the question of whether plants are sentient is still debated among scientists, philosophers, and ethicists. Over the past 20 years, many scientists such as Trewavas, Baluška, Mancuso, Gagliano, and Calvo have reported interesting discussions about memory, behavior, communication, and intelligence in plants. However, the reported conclusions have not convinced the entire scientific community. In this commentary, I would like to focus on two critical aspects related to sentience: cognition and emotion

Context In Augmented Reality Marketing: Does The Place Of Use Matter?, Simon Von Der Au, Philipp A. Rauschnabel, Reto Felix, Chris Hinsch

Marketing Faculty Publications

Augmented reality (AR) integrates virtual content into a consumer's perception of the real world. While academic interest in AR is growing, most prior research has focused on consumer evaluations of AR content and neglected the physical context in which AR content is consumed. Addressing this research gap, two experimental studies showed that context (e.g., experiencing a virtual sofa at home vs. in a university classroom) impacts consumer judgments and evaluations. The results reveal two primary effects of context. First, contexts in which virtual objects meet users' personal and cultural expectations associated with a specific location (e.g., a sofa in a …

Designing For Multigenerational Households In The United States, Dongniya Xiu Apr 2023

Designing For Multigenerational Households In The United States, Dongniya Xiu

Theses and Dissertations

Aging has become a challenging issue worldwide as well as in the United States where the high cost of nursing homes and unfriendly insurance plans have exacerbated the situation. To address this issue, multigenerational living arrangements have gained attention to bring financial, social, and environmental benefits, and reduce social isolation and loneliness among older adults. Researchers employed qualitative research methods by gathering data from open-ended interviews and observations to explore interior design needs and concerns and to identify necessary adjustments to promote aging-friendly living environments for multigenerational households. A total of 8 participants from four multigenerational households were conducted in …

Developing A Silvopastoral System For Use In Pará, Brazil, Laurel Kerkman Apr 2023

Developing A Silvopastoral System For Use In Pará, Brazil, Laurel Kerkman

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Land use changes brought on by agriculture are responsible for both a significant portion of climate change and emissions from livestock. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are released from land degradation and deforestation as diverse ecosystems are turned into pastures. Brazil, which ranks among the top four in the world for food production, is a hotspot for agriculture-related deforestation. Currently, Brazil is the largest exporter of beef in the world, which has put a strain on the environment as natural resources are destroyed in order to make room for industry. This thesis looks at and suggests silvopastoral farming systems …

Effects Of Time On Fingerprint Deposition After Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitizer Application, Allison Richards Apr 2023

Effects Of Time On Fingerprint Deposition After Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitizer Application, Allison Richards

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Since the height of the COVID pandemic in 2020, alcohol-based hand sanitizers have been utilized by the general public because it eliminates germs on the skin surface along with virus cells. The use of hand sanitizer can have an adverse effect on the collection of fingerprints at a crime scene. A fingerprint is made up of amino acids which deteriorate under the presence of alcohol-based hand sanitizer. With prolonged use the product can even erode a subject’s skin altering the fingerprint to the point that it does not match documented latent prints. The purpose of this experiment is to determine …

Hansen Technologies: Mvp Kaizen Event, Kyle Kraus, Ethan Mahon, Erick Hohler, Alexander Knowles

Senior Design Project For Engineers

Hansen Technologies, based in Commerce GA, is a global leader in the production of industrial refrigeration. One of their most profitable product assembly cells, the Multivalve Platform cell, is not currently producing enough to meet increasing demand. The MVP team focused on analyzing and designing a system using Kaizen to improve the throughput of the MVP cell. After conducting a root cause analysis through Gemba and video analysis, key areas were noted for improvement. Small inconsistencies, such as losing grip on the heavy MVP and searching for materials can take a lot of time away from achieving higher throughput levels. …

Adaptive Sports Equipment: A Resource For Clinicians, Coaches, & Athletes, Allison Chown Apr 2023

Adaptive Sports Equipment: A Resource For Clinicians, Coaches, & Athletes, Allison Chown

Student Capstone Papers

Background: About 61 million adults who live in the United States (US) have a disability, which equates to about one in four adults in the US (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020). Unfortunately, only one out of every ten people who need assistive technology (AT) have access to the proper equipment, with lack of awareness of the devices being one of the causes (World Health Organization [WHO], 2018). It has been noted in literature that a lack of awareness exists amongst clinicians, coaches, & athletes regarding available adaptive equipment (AE) to support participation in adaptive sports ([AS] Bergem, …

“Finfluencers In The Wild” A Call For Regulation Addressing The Growth Of Online Investment Advice, Mia Stefanou

Brooklyn Law Review

Illustrated in part by the abnormal market volatility that resulted from the popularity of meme stocks in early 2021, a new era of securities trading is taking place. With increasing frequency, investors look to social media discourse for investment advice. The current regulatory regime in the United States fails to address the increasing prominence of a new type of market participant—the “finfluencer.” This new breed of advisor is the social media influencer who provides investment advice to other users online. This note discusses the global conversations surrounding the emergence of this group, examines the US governance framework, specifically the Investment …
