Improving The Stability Of Smart Power Grids Using Evolutionary Neural Networks, Cameron Arkesteyn

The research evaluates various computational methods to improve the efficiency of power grid operations. The objective is to design an algorithm that improves the efficiency of power grids by controlling the operation of the voltage regulators and power converters. Using a real-time communication with distributed sensors and evolutionary artificial neural networks, the method could reveal the presence of disturbances and provide configurational changes that improve the system stability.

Although the use of autonomous vehicles to transport people and objects from one location to another is an interesting concept, the operation of autonomous vehicles opens doors to various safety issues and security vulnerabilities. This is especially evident during the presence of traffic and unidentified obstacles on the road. In addition, the cost of the sensors used in autonomous vehicles is high and the sensor hardware itself is prone to malfunction and failure. Accurate operation of these sensors is important to the overall safety of the passengers inside the vehicle because they can determine whether an accident will be avoided.

The present study experimentally investigated the performance effect of listening to different music genres while completing a computer-based information integration task. Participants were randomly assigned to music genre groups of Instrumental, Lyrical, and Electronica, plus a control group that did not hear any music. Given the data collected at this point and feedback from participants, more research is required to better understand the impact of music genre on cognitive tasks that direct or distract attention. Thus, we have decided to extend our participant data collection for another week. This additional data will be instrumental to our study.

In this paper, we investigate the state of charge (SoC) estimation of Lithium-Ion batteries using an extended Kalman filter, and an unscented Kalman filter. The results show that both perform well with battery management systems in power grids, with the unscented Kalman filter providing a more accurate estimation of the SoC.

A Dynamic Model Of The Pi3k/Akt/Pten Axis In Pathological Microglial Phenotype, Rohan Sethi

Microglia, which are immune cells of the CNS, are critical to maintaining the integrity of nervous system and are stimulated into action after detection of damaged/dying cells and foreign pathogens. Recent literature has implicated the role of dysregulated PI3K/AKT dynamics in promoting inflammatory microglia that chronically promote damaging neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative disease. I have designed a computational model that can help elucidate the intrinsic biochemical mechanisms and kinetics of the PI3K/AKT pathway that govern the microglial states. I plan to use the in-silico model to study the therapeutic potential of manipulating this pathway’s biochemical kinetics to slow neurodegenerative disease progression.

Past studies have given the heritability of long bones but have not taken maternal effects into consideration. The goal of this research is to identify the proportion of maternal effects in that heritability and the level of influence that it has on offspring. This will use the information of a parent and offspring generation of mice to create a model that can identify the maternal effects apart from direct effects. The results will give a map for identifying the loci for maternal effects that indirectly influence long bones. This will give estimates for variation of offspring for certain populations.
