Use Of External Uterine Electromyography Across Stage I Labor, Rebecca Benfield, Edward R. Newton Apr 2023

Use Of External Uterine Electromyography Across Stage I Labor, Rebecca Benfield, Edward R. Newton

Nursing Faculty Research

Introduction: Highly sensitive, external uterine electromyography (EMG) measures myometrial electrical activity and is noninvasive compared with the clinical intrauterine pressure catheter. Most experimental studies have measured EMG in 30-minute epochs, limiting the utility of this instrumentation in intrapartum clinical practice. To test proof of concept, surface uterine EMG contraction activity was continuously collected throughout the first stage of labor from healthy women at term gestation with (n = 3) and without (n = 1) epidural or combined spinal-epidural analgesia for a maximal length of 11 hours and 24 minutes.

Methods: EMG activity was recorded concurrently with tocodynamometer (toco) signals, using …

How Do Stories Affect Careers?, Victoria Read

Honors Projects

Determining viable professional careers is one of the most important parts of going to college. Artistic careers, including those in film, are both competitive and dependent on the responses of critics and audiences. People in film careers take different paths; one of them is writing screenplays. Researching screenwriting and the careers of two professional women screenwriters, Diablo Cody and Nancy Meyers, I sought to answer three central questions: how does writing create career paths, what are those careers, and what is it like writing a story?

Through the research on screenwriting, I became familiar with story structures such Joseph Campbell’s …

Efficacy Of Distraction Therapy In Reducing Needlestick Pain In Pediatrics: A Scoping Review, Ashlan Ritchie Bsn, Rn, Anne Evans Bsn, Rn, Charlotte Isabel Bsn, Rn, Michelle Rickard Dnp, Cpnp-Ac, Chppn, Bmtcn

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background

Pediatric pain management is often overlooked due to time constraints and lack of resources or education on interventions used, such as distraction or pharmacological therapy. Lack of pain management leads to patient and caregiver distress, as well as an increased number of attempts to perform the procedure. This scoping review evaluates the efficacy of distraction therapy compared to nonopioid pharmacological interventions for acute needlestick pain in children ages 6 to 12 years; patient and caregiver levels of distress were also evaluated in most studies.

Standing In The Age Of Data Breaches: A Consumer-Friendly Framework To Pleading Future Injury And Providing Equitable Relief To Data Breach Victims, John E. Mcloughlin Apr 2023

Standing In The Age Of Data Breaches: A Consumer-Friendly Framework To Pleading Future Injury And Providing Equitable Relief To Data Breach Victims, John E. Mcloughlin

Brooklyn Law Review

Data breaches have rapidly increased in volume in the United States since the beginning of the twenty-first century. As entities across the United States have increasingly stored personally identifiable information (PII) in online databases, cybercriminals have developed tools to steal and sell stolen PII. This note explores the devastating consequences felt by data breach victims and the uphill battles victims often face in finding legal remedies. Although data breach victims may be at risk of identity theft, they are often barred from taking legal action against the entity that breached their data due to the “injury in fact” requirement under …

Policing The Police: Establishing The Right To Record And Civilian Oversight Boards To Oversee America’S Police, Michael G. Brewster Apr 2023

Policing The Police: Establishing The Right To Record And Civilian Oversight Boards To Oversee America’S Police, Michael G. Brewster

Brooklyn Law Review

Police misconduct is a persistent issue in the United States that undermines public trust in law enforcement and the criminal justice system as a whole. The video of George Floyd’s arrest and murder played an irreplaceable role in bringing attention to the case and sparking nationwide discussions about the state of policing in America. The video, showing former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Mr. Floyd’s neck for several minutes, also helped convict Mr. Chauvin of murder at trial. Recording police activity is an important means of holding officers accountable for their actions and protecting citizens from abuse of …

Historical Tradition: A Vague, Overconfident, And Malleable Approach To Constitutional Law, Michael L. Smith Apr 2023

Historical Tradition: A Vague, Overconfident, And Malleable Approach To Constitutional Law, Michael L. Smith

Brooklyn Law Review

In New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, the Supreme Court overturned a century-old firearms licensing scheme that required people seeking concealed carry permits to demonstrate that they had a special need for self-defense. The Court did so by applying a “historical tradition” approach to determine the scope of Second Amendment protection. Under this approach, where the Second Amendment’s plain text covers an individual’s conduct, a law restricting that conduct must be consistent with “the Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation.” At first glance, the historical tradition approach may seem objective and easier than an empirical analysis …

Trump Really Is Too Small: The Right To Trademark Political Commentary, Samuel F. Ernst Apr 2023

Trump Really Is Too Small: The Right To Trademark Political Commentary, Samuel F. Ernst

Brooklyn Law Review

Can you register a famous person’s name as your trademark? The Lanham Act seems to say no, and the PTO interprets this to mean, no, never, no matter what. The Federal Circuit says, “yes, you can,” at least as applied to marks containing political commentary. 15 U.S.C. § 1052(c) provides, in pertinent part, that the PTO must deny federal registration to a trademark if it “[c]onsists of or comprises a name, portrait, or signature identifying a particular living individual except by his written consent….” Earlier this year the Federal Circuit declared this law unconstitutional in violation of the First Amendment, …

An Unreasonable Presumption: The National Security/Foreign Affairs Nexus In Immigration Law, Anthony J. Demattee, Matthew J. Lindsay, Hallie Ludsin Apr 2023

An Unreasonable Presumption: The National Security/Foreign Affairs Nexus In Immigration Law, Anthony J. Demattee, Matthew J. Lindsay, Hallie Ludsin

Brooklyn Law Review

For well over a century, immigration has occupied a constitutionally unique niche within US public law. Noncitizens in immigration proceedings are routinely denied constitutional guarantees, including due process and equal protection, that apply in virtually every other legal setting. Courts justify their extraordinary deference to the government by invoking a presumptive nexus between immigration, on the one hand, and national security and foreign affairs, on the other. Critically, courts cite the national security/foreign affairs nexus regardless of whether the specific regulation or enforcement action under review has any plausible bearing on those interests. This article is the first to demonstrate …

Context: Nowadays, mobile applications (or apps) have become vital in our daily life, particularly within education. Many institutions increasingly rely on mobile apps to provide access to all their students. However, many education mobile apps remain inaccessible to users with disabilities who need to utilize accessibility features like talkback or screen reader features. Accessibility features have to be considered in mobile apps to foster equity and inclusion in the educational environment allowing to use of such apps without limitations. Gaps in the accessibility to educational systems persist.

Objective: In this paper, we focus on the accessibility of the Blackboard mobile …

Herein, we present a dataset based on the RNA-Seq analysis of liver tissue from bovine female fetuses at day 83 of gestation. The findings were reported in the main article, “Periconceptual maternal nutrition affects fetal liver programming of energy- and lipid-related genes”[1] . These data were generated to investigate the effects of periconceptual maternal vitamin and mineral supplementation and rates of body weight gain on the transcript abundance of genes associated with fetal hepatic metabolism and function. To this end, crossbred Angus beef heifers ( n = 35) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a 2 × …

Beliefs About Mental Illness, Mental Health Treatment, And Anticipated Social Stigma: A Proposed Study Of Air Force Rotc Cadets, Gabrielle N. Limes

Honors Projects

The growing prevalence of mental illness within the United States Armed Forces has become a relevant topic of concern for researchers. Considering the negative attitudes that are often ascribed to those struggling with mental illness, understanding the stigmatized beliefs of those in the military is of specific interest, especially since current mental health services are reported to be ineffective. While research has investigated this issue within enlisted military populations, there is currently no research concerning military leadership positions and their subgroups such as the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). With research suggesting leadership plays a significant role in the perpetuation …

Epigenetics In Forensic Science, Reagan Faunce Apr 2023

Epigenetics In Forensic Science, Reagan Faunce

Honors Projects

DNA methylation can be useful for forensic scientists because it can be used to differentiate between the DNA of identical twins, determine the age of a contributor of a DNA sample, and help us understand the actions and tendencies of violent criminals. Research shows that DNA methylation changes over time and can be caused by traumatic events, suggesting that methylation increases with age. Prior studies of DNA methylation at the promoters of the EDARADD, TOM1L1, and NPTX2 genes have been able to predict age within 5.2 years and a study of the ASPA, EDARADD, PDE4C, and ELOVL2 genes predicted age …

This project will design, fabricate, and test a magnetoelastic nickel-iron-cobalt alloy resonator for ground fault detection applications, specifically in photovoltaic systems. The electrodeposition technique will be used to fabricate the proposed resonator as it enables a precise manufacturing process. It allows for better control and optimization of material properties (magnetic, mechanical, and electrical) while facilitating the necessary dimensions. A great deal of study and experimentation will go into the electrolyte development when dealing with challenges like intrinsic stress and surface defects within the film. Hull cell analysis will be done to study the composition of the material in different electrochemical …

A Remembrance Project: The Lynching Of Brack Kinley And Luther Durrett, Addison Rogers Apr 2023

A Remembrance Project: The Lynching Of Brack Kinley And Luther Durrett, Addison Rogers

Undergraduate Theses

From 1882 to 1968, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) estimates that 4,743 lynching’s occurred in the U.S. While other organizations report a slightly different number, the harsh reality of terror and violence remains the same. These violent acts of murder were used as a mechanism by white mobs to promote terror and enforce control upon the black community. Despite the presence of terror and violence in our current society, little is taught about such history and the people who were murdered. Instead of an emphasis on the actual history and the lives lost, the emphasis …

Effects Of Guided Journaling On Nursing Clinical Judgment During An Externship, Jaclyn Parrill Apr 2023

Effects Of Guided Journaling On Nursing Clinical Judgment During An Externship, Jaclyn Parrill

Undergraduate Theses

Background: There is longstanding discussion concerning the competency of novice nurses who passed the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) and their ability to practice safely. Nursing clinical judgment (CJ), also known as critical thinking or clinical decision-making, accounts for more than 46% of daily tasks nurses perform in their first year (Hensel, 2020, p. 128). Guided reflective journaling is one active learning strategy that encourages students to reflect on what they have learned, anticipate future needs, and enhance clinical judgment skills (Meijer, 2021, p. 9, 11). This qualitative pilot study follows one nursing student throughout a student nurse extern program …

Export Capacity And Capital Stock Augmentation Through Imports: Evidence From Sub-Saharan African Countries, Catherine Y. Co Apr 2023

Export Capacity And Capital Stock Augmentation Through Imports: Evidence From Sub-Saharan African Countries, Catherine Y. Co

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the capital goods imports of Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries from 2002 to 2017. The composition of capital goods imports has become less diverse over time in more than half of the countries studied. Colonial ties no longer determine the sourcing of capital goods as China is now the top source. Trade gravity regressions using the Poisson pseudo-maximum-likelihood estimator show that bilateral exports of non-primary products by SSA countries and their low-income peers are associated with increased net stock of imported general-purpose capital goods. Additionally, there is evidence that the net stock of some types of imported equipment …

Japan: Where Did All The People Go? An Empirical Study On Economic And Social Impacts On Low Fertility In Japan, Sasha Heasley Apr 2023

Japan: Where Did All The People Go? An Empirical Study On Economic And Social Impacts On Low Fertility In Japan, Sasha Heasley

Business and Economics Honors Papers

This project analyzed potential impacts on the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in Japan (2010 and 2015), which is dealing with both a declining population and an ageing population in parallel. Results indicate that income per person has the largest impact on TFR, and it is highly considered when making fertility decisions. Results also show that government policies are largely ineffective in impacting TFR. Results were obtained through two panel regressions and two Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions, in which TFR was the dependent variable.

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background

Diabetes and depression are highly prevalent and concerning conditions impacting millions worldwide. Evidence-based guidelines recommend regular depression screening of individuals with type II diabetes (DM2) to appropriately diagnose and treat depression and proactively enhance clinical outcomes. The gold standard for determining depression in patients with chronic disease is the diagnostic clinical interview; however, many clinicians have turned to brief, self-reported screening tools such as the PHQ-2 and the PHQ-9 whose use are recommended by evidence-based guidelines. This study aims to assess the utilization of the PHQ-2 and PHQ-9 versus no screening on DM2 patients in a primary care setting. …
