Femicides: Gender Violence In Mexico, Maria Mendoza
Femicides: Gender Violence In Mexico, Maria Mendoza
The Agora
Femicide is a recurring topic in Mexican society due to the concerning rise of cases in past years. This research paper aims to discuss femicides and gender violence in Mexico as a systematic problem. To develop this text, various femicide cases are presented, as well as recounts of the author’s personal experiences living in Mexico. Lastly, the final sections show the unreliability of the Mexican government to resolve the issue of femicides in the country, demonstrating the importance of public involvement in combating gender violence.
Survival Is Insufficient: An Examination Of Shakespeare, Pandemics, And Cultural Perseverance In Emily St. John Mandel’S Station Eleven, Katie Paulus
The Agora
This paper examines reading Station Eleven in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. There is also a heavy relation of the text with the usage of the Shakespearean works, other arts within the novel, and the keeping of unnecessary items by the protagonist with the overall message of the text. Ultimately, Station Eleven exposes the importance of the arts, even in times of crisis. Considering the recent Covid-19 pandemic, we can see the novel’s argument: “survival is insufficient” play out in reality. The arts have found a way to survive through past pandemics, Covid-19, and the theorized Georgian Flu in the …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have driven the design of new expert systems and automated workflows that are able to model complex chemical and biological phenomena. In recent years, machine learning approaches have been developed and actively deployed to facilitate computational and experimental studies of protein dynamics and allosteric mechanisms. In this review, we discuss in detail new developments along two major directions of allosteric research through the lens of data-intensive biochemical approaches and AI-based computational methods. Despite considerable progress in applications of AI methods for protein structure and dynamics studies, the intersection between allosteric …

Food For Thought: A Food Initiative For Selective Institutions, Johanna Hossink
Food For Thought: A Food Initiative For Selective Institutions, Johanna Hossink
Masters Projects
Food insecurity is a problem facing many college students across the United States. While many colleges and universities have begun to address food insecurity on their campuses by providing resources such as food pantries and meal swipe programs, selective institutions have largely been left out of the conversation. Food insecurity in college creates a plethora of barriers that often prevent students from experiencing college in the same capacity as their food secure counterparts. Unfortunately, low-income students facing food insecurity at selective institutions must face the additional barrier of a culture of wealth that often renders their food insecurity invisible while …

Stabilizing Polar Phases In Binary Metal Oxides By Hole Doping, Tengfei Cao, Guodong Ren, Ding-Fu Shao, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Rohan Mishra
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
The recent observation of ferroelectricity in the metastable phases of binary metal oxides, such as HfO2, ZrO2, Hf0.5Zr0.5O2, and Ga2O3, has garnered a lot of attention. These metastable ferroelectric phases are typically stabilized using epitaxial strain, alloying, or defect engineering. Here, we propose that hole doping plays a key role in the stabilization of polar phases in binary metal oxides. Using first-principles density-functional-theory calculations, we show that holes in these oxides mainly occupy one of the two oxygen sublattices. This hole localization, which is more pronounced …
The Relationship Between Gender, Academic Performance, And Confidence Within Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Classes, Allison Cheek, Allison Kay Cheek
The Relationship Between Gender, Academic Performance, And Confidence Within Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Classes, Allison Cheek, Allison Kay Cheek
Honors Projects
This research investigated the relationship between student confidence, academic performance, and gender within sixth, seventh, and eighth grade STEM classes. [BAC1] After comparing student self-esteem survey scores to student math and science grades, two types of statistical tests were run (linear regression tests and a comparison of two means). The result of these tests suggests that there is not a statistical relationship between student confidence, academic performance, and gender within the sample population of 122 junior high students. It appears that the gender gap within STEM has closed, at least for this student sample population.

This project explores the relationship between merchandise development and narrative development, with a specific focus on the creative development between dolls and animation. Through exploration of these creative mediums, I began to question: How does the creative process combining animation and merchandise develop, and what is the impact on the final product? This concept is broken down even further to focus specifically on characters, and how creative characters are developed for dolls. This project provides an overview of the history of animation and merchandising beginning with Felix the Cat in the 1920s. Felix represents an instance of an animated character …

Psychophysical numbing, compassion fading, and the singularity effect are strongly affecting the world amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Empathy-motivated prosocial behavior is not consistent with the drastic number of lives lost due to COVID-19. The current study evaluated participants for situational empathy levels post-exposure to either COVID-19 death statistics or a personal reflection on loss due to COVID-19. Alongside empathy, political affiliation and COVID-19 personal loss were measured as potential moderators on the relationship between medium of exposure to mortality information and empathy levels in the sample.

Online Self-Compassion Training Vs. Expressive Writing: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Lauren Benyo Linford
Theses and Dissertations
Self-compassion is associated with a variety of positive outcomes including well-being and positive body image. There is a need for accessible online self-compassion resources that can be disseminated to the general public. This study examined the efficacy of The Gift of Self-Compassion course (GSC): a 30-day internet-delivered self-compassion training within a non-clinical general population sample. Outcomes examined were self-compassion, well-being, and body dissatisfaction. Using a randomized controlled design, this study compared the GSC to an expressive writing (EW) curriculum. Participants were 215 adults from the general population. Seemingly unrelated regression models were used to estimate treatment differences between groups as …
Working-Through Traumatic Memory In Young Adult Fiction, Amanda Charles
Working-Through Traumatic Memory In Young Adult Fiction, Amanda Charles
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the growing presence of trauma and abuse narratives in young adult literature (YAL), adolescent traumatic memory has largely been left out of the conversation. To better understand how contemporary memory scholarship is manifested in YAL, the following essay will offer a close reading of Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes (1993) by Chris Crutcher and Speak (1999) by Laurie Halse Anderson in conjunction with adolescent memory research. The accuracy of traumatic memory representation in these novels confirms the value of YAL as a means for youth to interact with and learn about traumatic memory, its processes, and its effects.

The target of rapamycin complex 1 (TORC1) is a master regulator of cell growth as well as a negative regulator of longevity. A recent study in yeast showed that the vacuolar TORC1 stimulates protein synthesis and cell growth while the endosomal TORC1 inhibits autophagy, a pro-longevity process. Since late endosome frequently exchanges membranes with vacuoles, the spatial dissection of TORC1 raises an interesting question as to how to inhibit the endosomal TORC1 and boosts the vacuolar TORC1 to extend the health span. In my thesis, I employed a longevity mutant that mildly up-regulates Osh6 (PERG6-OSH6) to address this question. I …

The identification of biomarkers plays a crucial role in personalized medicine, both in the clinical and research settings. However, the contrast between predictive and prognostic biomarkers can be challenging due to the overlap between the two. A prognostic biomarker predicts the future outcome of cancer, regardless of treatment, and a predictive biomarker predicts the effectiveness of a therapeutic intervention. Misclassifying a prognostic biomarker as predictive (or vice versa) can have serious financial and personal consequences for patients. To address this issue, various statistical and machine learning approaches have been developed. The aim of this study is to present an in-depth …
