It also looks into historical changes in environmentalism and finds how the changes correlated with changes in economic conditions.
An Evidence-Based Approach To Improving The Quality Of Sex Education In Ohio, Alyssa Buschur
An Evidence-Based Approach To Improving The Quality Of Sex Education In Ohio, Alyssa Buschur
Honors Projects
Sex education is arguably one of the most controversial subjects in the United States education system. Because education is primarily considered a state’s responsibility, it is difficult to ensure consistent material is being taught from state to state. Although comprehensive sex education has been proven to be effective, most states including Ohio, lean towards an abstinence-only approach. Ohio currently has very vague and limited sex education policies. In this paper, I will analyze sex education at the federal, state, and district levels (in Ohio) to determine the current state of affairs. I will utilize a case-study analysis of three Ohio …

In recent years, companies from a plethora of industries have participated in the act of corporate inversion, which is essentially moving the headquarters of a company to a subsidiary branch located in another country. There are some substantial benefits as well as drawbacks to this practice; therefore, the objective of this project is to examine this from an accounting and international business perspective. This project will investigate the research of corporate inversion, including both current and potential legislation, and give guidance to companies deciding to move abroad as well as using a hypothetical company to examine this phenomenon in a …
The Effects Of Activation And Values-Enhanced Activation On Mood, Joshua Bock
The Effects Of Activation And Values-Enhanced Activation On Mood, Joshua Bock
Honors Projects
Behavioral Activation (BA) is a contemporary behavioral therapy that aims to lessen depressive symptoms by increasing the activity of depressed individuals. There are many protocols for implementing BA, with most protocols being relatively similar. One difference frequently observed between protocols is the inclusion or omission of values (Kanter et al., 2006, 2009). Despite this variation in protocol, there has yet to be an empirical exploration of whether including values in BA makes the therapy more effective. The current study examines the effect of values-based activation on mood by manipulating the inclusion of values in an activation prompt with a general …

Keep Your Litter In The Loop: Predicting Generation Z’S Intention To Recycle Single-Use Plastic Waste, Astrid Gisela Herabadi, Elsa S. Bella, Syanesti Adishesa, Wahyu C. Nugroho
Psychological Research on Urban Society
The introduction of single-use plastic into modern daily life has created an alarming number of plastic-waste in Indonesia. Government policies and social movements efforts to reduce and manage single-use plastic waste may not be enough. It is therefore important to study the factors related to the inclination of individual citizens to participate in the recycling effort, which is unfortunately still quite low. This study implements the Theory of Planned Behaviour to measure the predictiveness of the antecedent factors; attitude toward recycling single-use plastic, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control; on the intention to recycle single-use plastic among Generation Z in …

From College To University: Nursing Students' Experience Of Transition, Mary Anne Krahn
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
Increasingly complex healthcare systems require nurses to have a greater depth of knowledge and theory application to care for patients safely and competently. To prepare nurses for rapidly changing health care systems, the baccalaureate degree was accepted by the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) as the standard for entry to Registered Nurse practice across Canada and became the entry-to-practice requirement starting in 2005 (Wood, 2011).
In Ontario, this entry-to-practice standard required the development of college and university collaborative partnerships to respond to the resulting implementation and capacity challenges in nursing education (MacMillan & Mallette, 2004). Although these partnerships have been in …

Improving Social Determinants Of Health Screening And Intervening In A Rural Primary Care Setting, Katina Ann Pulos Kuerth
Masters Projects
ABSTRACT
Background: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are associated with an increased risk of poor health outcomes and increased healthcare utilization (Buitron de la Vega et al, 2019). To achieve health equity, social determinants of health are an essential factor to assess. Practitioners (in the evaluated primary care setting) can document, track, update, and report SDOH through the electronic medical record (EMR). Yet, the electronic health record is not consistently being utilized for this purpose.
Objectives: This article describes a new protocol which was implemented, utilizing a module embedded in the EMR, to chart the results of a standardized SDOH …

Many studies have examined individual water-saving management practices for corn (Zea mays L.), but few studies have looked at how combinations of practices might further enhance water optimization. The research objectives of this paper were to evaluate the impact of irrigation technology, irrigation rate, and crop genetics, as well as their interactions, on silage corn yield and forage quality. Trials were conducted in three Utah locations from 2019 through 2021. The results from five site-years indicated that the best water optimization practices varied by site-year. Low-elevation sprinklers commonly applied water more efficiently, with four of the five site-years having …
Using Acoustic Sound Indices To Investigate Sources Of Turbidity In A Midwestern Agricultural Stream, Youmi Kay Hong
Using Acoustic Sound Indices To Investigate Sources Of Turbidity In A Midwestern Agricultural Stream, Youmi Kay Hong
Theses and Dissertations
Turbidity is an important measure of drinking water quality. However, there is difficulty ascertaining sources of turbidity due to the resources needed to monitor streams and can be puzzling when there are diel cycles within a stream despite no changes in water level. Six Mile Creek, located in Mclean County, Illinois, is a small agricultural stream in the Evergreen Lake watershed that exhibits diel turbidity cycle changes of 10 NTUs. We hypothesized that turbidity is being caused by increased bioactivity in the stream at night. To understand the potential for bioactivity to influence diel turbidity cycles we deployed a hydrophone …

Estimating The Xi Effect: How Chinese Aid Affects Economic And Political Institutions, Mackenzie Owens
Business and Economics Honors Papers
Under Xi Jinping, China has expanded its aid allocation worldwide and has introduced global infrastructure projects to connect itself to countries everywhere. With such ambitious aid allocation, China has been the recipient of both admiration and scorn on the international stage. This paper assesses these concerns using data from 2000 to 2017 to determine how Chinese aid affects recipient states’ economic and political institutions. Specifically, this research looked to ascertain if there is a measurable Xi Effect in recipient states. The quantitative analysis shows the Xi Effect is small and positive on economic institutions and political institutions, signifying Xi Jinping’s …

Uncertainty From The Aharonov–Vaidman Identity, Matthew S. Leifer
Uncertainty From The Aharonov–Vaidman Identity, Matthew S. Leifer
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this article, I show how the Aharonov–Vaidman identity A|ψ>=<A⟩|ψ>+ΔA| ψ⊥A> can be used to prove relations between the standard deviations of observables in quantum mechanics. In particular, I review how it leads to a more direct and less abstract proof of the Robertson uncertainty relation ΔAΔB≥12|< [A,B]>| than the textbook proof. I discuss the relationship between these two proofs and show how the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality can be derived from the Aharonov–Vaidman identity. I give Aharonov–Vaidman based proofs of the Maccone–Pati uncertainty relations …

The Need For Specialized Training For Faculty And Staff Working With Transfer Student-Athletes, Erin C. Kuyawa
The Need For Specialized Training For Faculty And Staff Working With Transfer Student-Athletes, Erin C. Kuyawa
Masters Projects
Literature indicates that there is a common need for specialized support and orientation for NCAA transfer student-athletes. This project examines the unique challenges both transfer students and student-athletes face when transferring into a new institution. Throughout the literature the need for additional training for higher education (orientation) faculty and staff is presented. Training to increase knowledge and awareness of student-athletes’ academic requirements required by the National Collegiate Athletic Association is created. It is anticipated by training faculty and staff working with transfer students that the number of transfer student-athletes deemed as academically ineligible following their transfer process will lessen.
Localization Of Ctg-Repeat-Containing Transgenes In Drosophila Melanogaster Myotonic Dystrophy Models, Andrea Waltrip
Localization Of Ctg-Repeat-Containing Transgenes In Drosophila Melanogaster Myotonic Dystrophy Models, Andrea Waltrip
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1, DM1, is a multi-systemic muscle wasting disorder that results from expression of expanded CTG repeats in the DMPK gene in humans. Three transgenic Drosophila melanogaster lines have been created containing 60, 250, or 480 CTG repeats to model DM1. The transgenic repeats are expressed using the GAL4/UAS system. Expression of long-repeat transgenes ((CTG)250 and i(CTG)480) produces phenotypes consistent with DM1, relative to control lines ((CTG)60). The precise chromosomal location of insertion of the transgenes has not been reported. We used classical genetic approaches to localize CTG-repeat transgene insertion to a specific …

Using A Distributive Approach To Model Insurance Loss, Kayla Kippes
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Insurance loss is an unpredicted event that stands at the forefront of the insurance industry. Loss in insurance represents the costs or expenses incurred due to a claim. An insurance claim is a request for the insurance company to pay for damage caused to an individual’s property. Loss can be measured by how much money (the dollar amount) has been paid out by the insurance company to repair the damage or it can be measured by the number of claims (claim count) made to the insurance company. Insured events include property damage due to fire, theft, flood, a car accident, …

Universal Screening For Student Mental Health: Selection Of Norming Sample As A Determinate Of Risk Status, Meagan Zeitvogel
Universal Screening For Student Mental Health: Selection Of Norming Sample As A Determinate Of Risk Status, Meagan Zeitvogel
LSU Master's Theses
The prevalence of student mental health concerns has increased the need for universal mental health screening. In turn, students may have increased access to services and support. Some screeners determine risk status by comparing student scores to norming samples that can be based solely on age (i.e., combined-gender) or on age and gender (i.e., separate-gender). Combined-gender norming samples assign risk status based on typical emotional and behavioral functioning across development. Separate-gender norming samples assign risk status based on developmental and biological differences between boys and girls. Currently, there is no research determining if students’ risk status changes based on norming …
