Agent-Based Modeling To Assess Optimal Conditions For Reducing Pathogenic Air Transmission, Lyndsy Stacy
Agent-Based Modeling To Assess Optimal Conditions For Reducing Pathogenic Air Transmission, Lyndsy Stacy
Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)
SARS-CoV-2 is a virus that is spread through aerosol transmission, meaning the viral particles can stay suspended in the air when in an aerosol. To study how viral particles disperse through aerosol we used the bacteriophage Phi6 as a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2. We released an aerosolized bacteriophage into the air using a nebulizer and placed plates containing a host organism at different distances and durations of exposure that the phage would kill when encountering. This allowed us to calculate rates of transmission, which were then used to create an agent-based model in Netlogo. This model can then be used to …
Predictors Of Stress In Minority Students: The Relative Importance Of Optimism Vs Resilience, Rashelle Sanchez, Ho Phi Huynh
Predictors Of Stress In Minority Students: The Relative Importance Of Optimism Vs Resilience, Rashelle Sanchez, Ho Phi Huynh
Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)
Many college students experience stress; optimism and resilience may help students cope with it. Optimism is a person’s positive outlook on their circumstances and their future, whereas resilience is a persons ability to adapt and
overcome challenges throughout their life. In this study, we compared the two to see which one would be a better predictor of stress. First year students (N =355) at a public regional university completed an online study that measure their perceive stress, optimism, and resilience. Bivariate correlations showed that resilience and optimism were both negatively correlated with all four sub-scales of students stress. Linear regression …
Intellectual Limitations And Doctor’S Orders: Examining The Relationship Between Intellectual Humility And Adherence To Medical Advice, Briella A. Nava, Caitlin Weldon, Ho Phi Huynh
Intellectual Limitations And Doctor’S Orders: Examining The Relationship Between Intellectual Humility And Adherence To Medical Advice, Briella A. Nava, Caitlin Weldon, Ho Phi Huynh
Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)
Nonadherence to medical advice poses a threat to patients, providers, and the health care system. Intellectual humility reflects one’s ability to recognize their intellectual limitations through the components of independence of intellect
and ego, openness to revising one’s viewpoint, respect for other’s viewpoints, and lack of intellectual overconfidence. Possessing more intellectual humility may help improve the way people interact with medical information, thereby increasing their understanding of medical conditions and necessary treatment. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between intellectual humility and adherence by having participants (N = 196) complete the Comprehensive Intellectual Humility Scale and the General Medication Adherence Scale. …

Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis Associated With Sra-Negative Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia: Case Report, Floyd D. Silva, Allison E. Burnett, Anand Padmanabhan, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, Noah P. Splinter, Masoom J. Desai
Pathology Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: There are very few documented reports in literature of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) caused by immune-mediated heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). Further, there are very few reports of false negative serotonin release assays (SRAs) when testing for immune-mediated HIT.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 60- year-old male with recent unfractionated heparin administration for venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, an elevated 4T score of 5 and acute CVST in which immune-mediated HIT was suspected. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) screening assay was positive for PF4 antibodies and subsequent reflexive SRA testing was negative. However, given the clinical picture, a false-negative …

A Statistical Approach For Analyzing Expectations Alignment Between Design Teams And Their Project Stakeholders, Matthew Christian Goodson
A Statistical Approach For Analyzing Expectations Alignment Between Design Teams And Their Project Stakeholders, Matthew Christian Goodson
Theses and Dissertations
Successful project management requires continuous communication aligning the expectations between project stakeholders and the project team. Expectations include both product expectations (how the product will look, feel, and perform) and programmatic expectations (timelines, deliverables, expenditure of project resources). In order to make the most effective use of project resources throughout the life of the project, a process or tool for quickly aligning expectations as closely as possible should be employed early on in the project. Project management literature is lacking in tools for aligning expectations, and solutions and best practices need to be determined since the current best option is …
Determining Factors In Self-Guided Language Learning: Comparing More And Less Successful Learners, S. Daniel Wright
Determining Factors In Self-Guided Language Learning: Comparing More And Less Successful Learners, S. Daniel Wright
Theses and Dissertations
Informal language learners from extended language immersion settings such as missionaries often have very disparate outcomes. Some learners achieve high proficiency levels while others fossilize in their interlanguage once they reach basic communicative competence. Could these differences in language outcomes be explained by learning strategies, motivation, or other psychological factors? To investigate these differences, 20 participants were selected based on participation in a post-mission language ability self-assessment resource (LASER) who had taken an Oral Proficiency Interview – Computer (OPIc). These learners were interviewed to probe beyond the LASER and discover what factors seemed to correlate with higher language proficiency outcomes. …
Gradient-Based Optimization Of Highly Flexible Aeroelastic Structures, Taylor G. Mcdonnell
Gradient-Based Optimization Of Highly Flexible Aeroelastic Structures, Taylor G. Mcdonnell
Theses and Dissertations
Design optimization is a method that can be used to automate the design process to obtain better results. When applied to aeroelastic structures, design optimization often leads to the creation of highly flexible aeroelastic structures. There are, however, a number of conventional design procedures that must be modified when dealing with highly flexible aeroelastic structures. First, the deformed geometry must be the baseline for weight, structural, and stability analyses. Second, potential couplings between aeroelasticity and rigid-body dynamics must be considered. Third, dynamic analyses must be modified to handle large nonlinear displacements. These modifications to the conventional design process significantly increase …
The Kp Index And Behavior Of Quiet Periods, Collette Walbeck
The Kp Index And Behavior Of Quiet Periods, Collette Walbeck
Physics Capstone Projects
The Kp-index quantifies the electromagnetic effects in the Earth’s atmosphere and is used in a variety of scientific fields. Higher Kp values tend to be the focus in these fields as they relate to high solar activity and geomagnetic storms. This study aimed to examine the significance, if any, of lower Kp indices. A simple data analysis was performed on continuous sequences of low Kp values, deemed Quiet Periods. Both the daily average of the values and the full set of Kp data were used. A decaying exponential relationship was discovered between the length of these periods and their frequencies …

How Volcanic Explosions Interface With Infrastructure: A Brief Analysis Of Volcano Infrasound's Influence On Fuego Observatory Near Fuego Volcano, Guatemala, Owen Walsh, Jeffrey B. Johnson
2023 Undergraduate Research Showcase
In 2022, roughly 9 kilometers from the summit of the volcano at Fuego Observatory in Guatemala, our team deployed two arrays of low frequency microphones (infrasound sensors) to capture the effects of Fuego Volcano’s semi-active period explosions on the observatory building. We hypothesized a discernible differential pressure signal and frequency spectra content between sensors placed inside and outside of the observatory. The peak force exerted on a building by volcano infrasound, depending upon the strength of the explosion and distance from it, may be enough to damage windows or even entire buildings if they are poorly built/kept. This presentation aims …

2023 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Ninety percent of colleges and universities in the United States offer conceptualized health and wellness courses (CHWC) that are meant to improve students’ general health and wellness knowledge. Prior literature reviews have mostly focused on physical benefits of such courses. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate course content and structure, and how effective college-based CHWCs are at improving mental health (MH) variables. Ten (10) articles published in English between 2010 and 2023, met our inclusion criteria, which represent 2419 subjects. Courses that focused on MH strategies, resulted in improved MH outcomes such as Meditation Practices, Mindfulness Strategies, …

The Luminous Power Of Accretion Disks In Active Galactic Nuclei, Imogen Jade Courtney
The Luminous Power Of Accretion Disks In Active Galactic Nuclei, Imogen Jade Courtney
Honors Theses
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are the most luminous long-lived objects in the universe. The phenomenon of the immense luminosities we observe for AGN has interested physicists and astronomers for over a century and continues to fascinate scientists today. The work in this thesis aims to provide an introductory exploration of this phenomenon. This thesis uses a simple model of AGN accretion disks that was developed under the standard disk model proposed by Shakura & Sunyev in 1973 under the simplest assumptions. The model accurately demonstrates how physical parameters, such as the temperature, radiative flux, luminosity, and spectra, scale through an …
The Dialectics Of Rock Music And Neoliberalism, Derek Block
The Dialectics Of Rock Music And Neoliberalism, Derek Block
Honors Theses
It has been argued that Rock music is one of the Modern West’s most important artistic achievements. It was, in some way, shape, or form, the most popular genre of music in the Western hemisphere for the last 60 years. The depth and relevancy of the genre still resonate through almost every level of society; a Bruce Springsteen song played at a political rally, a Beatles tune scoring a movie characters existential contemplation, the same six songs played at sporting events, and the list goes on. Rock music can be as personal as a stranger strumming a guitar in a …

Correlation Of Perceived Quality Of Program And Retention Among Online Non-Traditional Professional Management College Students, Rachel Axness
Correlation Of Perceived Quality Of Program And Retention Among Online Non-Traditional Professional Management College Students, Rachel Axness
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Online learning for undergraduate college students has significantly grown in demand and allows for more diverse and nontraditional students (e.g., 24 years old or older, attend part-time, work fulltime, have dependents) to pursue a college education. Although research studies indicate that online education is just as effective and robust as traditional, face-to-face delivery, students in online courses have lower retention rates (Bawa, 2016). Understanding the students’ perceived quality of online programming, along with demographic variables, will provide insight to understand retention of undergraduate students within online programs. This post-positivists, correlational research study examined two research questions including the relationship between …

While corn is considered to be a healthy food option, common agricultural practices, such as the application of soil amendments, might be introducing contaminants of concern (COC) into corn plants. The use of dredged material, which contain contaminants such as heavy metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as a soil amendment is increasing. Contaminants from these amendments can accumulate in corn kernels harvested from plants grown on these sediments and potentially biomagnify in organisms that consume them. The extent to which secondary exposure to such contaminants in corn affect the mammalian central nervous system has been virtually …
