Experience Abroad And Its Implications On Cultural Empathy, Food, Ambiguity, And Language, Emily Magri

Honors Projects in Modern Languages

This study examines the implication that experience abroad has on cultural empathy, food neophobia, tolerance of ambiguity, and language. The study's purpose is to use quantitative methodology to measure the effects of experience abroad and numerically show how these experiences allow us to nurture openness to new concepts of culture and food. An online survey was used to gather data to draw meaningful conclusions concerning the relationship between experience abroad, cultural empathy, food neophobia, tolerance of ambiguity, and language. The results of this study show that those who speak more than one language show lower levels of food neophobia, indicating …

The Recipe For Success: How Local Massachusetts And Rhode Island Restaurants Navigated And Survived Covid Restrictions, Han Lambert

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

The COVID-19 pandemic and the government restrictions adopted during the pandemic have had a detrimental impact on the continued survival and growth of many industries, including the restaurant industry. This study identifies critical regulations relating to COVID-19, implemented in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, as well as on a federal level, which directly impacted the restaurant industry. It is essential that certain economic and social factors are isolated as a means of establishing trends. In the case of this study, a mixed methods approach was used. The number of restaurants open, the amount of restaurant revenue, and the level of consumer …

Image Inpainting Methods: Digital Image Reconstruction And Restoration, Haruka Kido

Electrical Engineering Student Publications

This report investigates the digital image processing of image inpainting methods, particularly for digital image reconstruction and restoration through the two computational tools grouped into: [1] MatLAB/Image Segmenter and [2] Anaconda/OpenCV/Python. The use cases explored in the project involve image reconstruction and restoration of celestial imageries for means of clear demonstration and subject-matter consistency but can extend to more artistic purposes involving the removal of unwanted objects within the backgrounds or foregrounds of images that can be “erased” or “hidden” by being replaced by neighboring pixels of similar characteristics for image reconstruction and the removal of damaged parts observed in …

“That Contemptible Man (Tho’ Good Poet, In His Department)”: Examining Melville's Complex Relationship With Wordsworth, Xavier Suarez, Roland Wagoner, Keoni Hayward, Steven Olsen-Smith, Elisa Barney Smith

2023 Undergraduate Research Showcase

Herman Melville’s marked and annotated copy of The Poetical Works of William Wordsworth, which is preserved at Georgetown University, contains unique biographical and intellectual significance that has gone largely unexplored by scholarship. Melville’s marginalia demonstrate an ambivalence towards Wordsworth’s personal character that is sometimes at odds with his respect for the literary aspects of his writings. To investigate this, we analyzed the marginalia alongside additional primary resources and contemporary documents to find possible explanations of Melville’s ambivalence and its significance in relation to his broader work. Using visualizations of the marginalia made possible with our recently completed XML encoding …

Oxygen And Carbon Isotopes In Modern And Historic Mussels From The Snake River, Idaho, May Show Modern Rise Of Corn Production, Akira Byrne, Matt Kohn, Linda Reynard, Mark Plew

2023 Undergraduate Research Showcase

Stable carbon and oxygen isotope compositions were analyzed from local mussels ranging in age from 0 to 1000 years before the present to identify any trends and seasonal variability in the oxygen and carbon (𝛿18O and 𝛿13C values), compare trends and averages in 𝛿18O and 𝛿13C across different time periods and species of mussel, and finally use 𝛿18O to gain insight into how climate conditions might have changed in the past 1000 years. The Western Ridged Mussel (Gonidea angulate) and Western Pearlshell Mussel (Margaritifera falcata) are two species of freshwater mussels found in the Snake River …

Identification of proteins dysregulated by COVID-19 infection is critically important for better understanding of its pathophysiology, building prognostic models, and identifying new targets. Plasma proteomic profiling of 4,301 proteins was performed in two independent datasets and tested for the association for three COVID-19 outcomes (infection, ventilation, and death). We identified 1,449 proteins consistently associated in both datasets with any of these three outcomes. We subsequently created highly accurate models that distinctively predict infection, ventilation, and death. These proteins were enriched in specific biological processes including cytokine signaling, Alzheimer’s disease, and coronary artery disease. Mendelian randomization and gene network …

Unleashing Your Power: Principal Support And Its Relation To Teacher Longevity In Hard-To-Staff Schools930, Tracy Smith

Dissertations

Teacher attrition, the percentage of teachers who leave the field of education, has been a critical issue for many years. From general education teachers to special education teachers, from elementary to secondary, from public to private schools, and from rural to urban schools, much human and monetary capital are being spent to recruit and retain quality teachers; however, with very little success. Some research reports that the turnover rate is much larger for teachers than in other professions in the United States (Ingersoll, 2001). Ingersoll exclaimed that the teacher attrition rate was “twice the rate of nurses and five times …

High Frequency Radio Communication, Tyler Larsen Apr 2023

High Frequency Radio Communication, Tyler Larsen

Physics Capstone Projects

High frequency radio communication has been the most reliable form of communication for many decades. Over that period, we have learned and experienced times of enhanced signals along with complete radio blackouts. The purpose of this research is to collect and analyze radio signal data to see the evidence of various reasons as to why these phenomena occur. A radio antenna was set up at USU campus to retrieve the signals from beacon networks across the globe that transmit signals every 15 minutes. By tracking a few of these signals we can locate the times of discrepancies in the signals …

Can You Escape Agency By Falling Asleep? Killing Two Constitutivists’ Problems With One Stone, Henrique Cassol Leal Apr 2023

Can You Escape Agency By Falling Asleep? Killing Two Constitutivists’ Problems With One Stone, Henrique Cassol Leal

Theses

In this paper, I present a new problem to constitutivism (the idea that agency grounds our practical norms) and argue that the solution to this problem also solves Enoch’s shmagency question. The problem I bring forth involves the fact that agency seems to be metaphysically escapable, such as when we fall asleep, or get hit by a truck. If this is correct, then we allow for perplexing cases in which a wrongdoing is done, but no agent is responsible, nor is any norm broken—for, what grounds responsibility and norms, our agency, has disappeared. I thus argue for a notion of …

Exploring Inmate Health In Prisons: Health Issues, Interventions, And Suggestions To Improve Care, Jenna Healy Apr 2023

Exploring Inmate Health In Prisons: Health Issues, Interventions, And Suggestions To Improve Care, Jenna Healy

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The United States has the highest number of prisoners per capita at 639 people per 100,0008. There has been a fivefold increase in the number of inmates in the United States prison systems since 197044, and this may be a major contributor to the corrections healthcare system having trouble keeping up with this growth compared to the general population of the United States. According to the World Health Organization, the United States has documented higher mortality rates than many other developed countries. Rates of conditions such as cardiovascular disease have decreased everywhere, but much less in the United States. In …

How International Student Teaching Benefits A Classroom, Kasey Donahue

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In this day and age, more students are considering whether or not they should student teach abroad. International student teaching is not a program that all universities offer. However, at the universities that have the program, student teachers are noticing the effect that the experience has on them in the long run. Interviews with five different teachers who considered completing their student teaching abroad and followed through with it have reflected positive outcomes. The makeup of our classrooms are rapidly changing with many different cultures and nationalities being represented. In order to provide an equitable and inclusive classroom environment, teachers …

Teaching Accurate And Age-Appropriate History To Elementary Students: Teaching Third Graders About Historic Thanksgiving, Ashley Schepis Apr 2023

Teaching Accurate And Age-Appropriate History To Elementary Students: Teaching Third Graders About Historic Thanksgiving, Ashley Schepis

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This educational and historical research is based on teaching accurate and age-appropriate history to elementary students. Unfortunately, instead of true history elementary schoolers are often taught myths, to avoid teaching children about the embarrassing and gruesome parts of United States history. When history is not taught truthfully, it can perpetuate stereotypes and leave students confused when they reach secondary and higher education and discover that some of what they know is incorrect. The purpose of this project is to investigate what really happened at the 1621 Harvest Feast and its evolution into the holiday that is celebrated today, assess how …

How Do Grocery Stores Utilize Centralized Versus Decentralized Production To Compete In The Power Perimeter?, Lucy Smith Apr 2023

How Do Grocery Stores Utilize Centralized Versus Decentralized Production To Compete In The Power Perimeter?, Lucy Smith

Honors Projects in Global Supply Chain Management

Purpose - The grocery industry, one of the most important industries that individuals need to survive, has been pushed to the limits, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The grocery stores that were able to keep food on the shelves, despite all the delays and shortages that have been occurring, should have the most success, due to the availability of their product. Every business is looking for opportunities to be more cost efficient and effective and the processes to do so are heavily researched. The decision to centralize or decentralize the production processes is different for every store. They must consider …

Case Series: Continued Remission Of Ptsd Symptoms After Discontinuation Of Prazosin, Christie Richardson, Jonathan Yuh, Jing Su, Martin Forsberg

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a debilitating chronic illness that affects 6 out of 100 adults after a severe trauma. The alpha-adrenergic antagonist prazosin, which is prescribed off-label for flashbacks and nightmares due to trauma, is often continued indefinitely due to reports of symptoms returning upon discontinuation. There is no standard guidance for a trial of discontinuation of prazosin due to intolerance or side effects. In this case series, three patients are started on prazosin leading to remission of trauma-related symptoms, and symptoms continue to remit after treatment for an average of about 2 years followed by discontinuation of the medication. …

Understanding The Effectiveness Of Russian Influence Operations On The United States As Compared To Other Regimes, Giselle Weiss Apr 2023

Understanding The Effectiveness Of Russian Influence Operations On The United States As Compared To Other Regimes, Giselle Weiss

National Security Affairs and International Relations Theses

For years, the Russian Federation has effectively used influence operations to advance their global position and interfere with democratic processes like elections throughout the world. This project addresses the question: is the United States more susceptible to Russian influence operations compared to other nations with varied protections for freedom of speech? The Western world may be more vulnerable to disinformation and propaganda because people are unaccustomed to state narratives and vulnerable to targeted operations. The more research is done on this topic, the more people can become aware of the problem and protect themselves from vulnerability. By comparing data about …

Gender And Writing In Melville's Erased Marginalia To Shakespeare, Netanya Hitchcock, Steven Olsen-Smith, Elisa Barney Smith Apr 2023

Gender And Writing In Melville's Erased Marginalia To Shakespeare, Netanya Hitchcock, Steven Olsen-Smith, Elisa Barney Smith

2023 Undergraduate Research Showcase

This poster presentation explores Herman Melville’s erased marginalia in his set of Shakespeare’s The Dramatic Works and his attention as a reader to the ironies and paradoxes of human experiences, relationships, and social and gender identities and roles. Previously unaddressed in scholarship, the erasures range in character from attention to rhetorical style to themes of human nature, cynical views of marriage, misogynistic representations of women, and hostility toward messengers. Examination of extant marginalia in relation to erased reveals thematically parallel content and inconsistent targeting of marginalia for erasure, provoking questions as to whether the erasures are due to self-consciousness or …

Surface, But Not Age Impact Lower Limb Joint Work During Walk And Stair Ascent, Thomas A. Wenzel, Nicholas L. Hunt, Amy E. Holcomb, Clare K. Fitzpatrick, Tyler N. Brown Apr 2023

Surface, But Not Age Impact Lower Limb Joint Work During Walk And Stair Ascent, Thomas A. Wenzel, Nicholas L. Hunt, Amy E. Holcomb, Clare K. Fitzpatrick, Tyler N. Brown

2023 Undergraduate Research Showcase

During common locomotor activates, such as walk or stair negotiation, older adults exhibit unfavorable lower limb biomechanical changes, including diminished joint torque and power, and proximal mechanical work redistribution that may increase their fall risk. Twelve young (18 to 25 years) and 12 older (> 65 years) adults performed a walk and stair ascent task on a normal, slick, and uneven surface. For each walk and stair ascent trial, synchronous 3D marker trajectories and GRF data were collected. Stance phase positive limb and joint work, and relative joint work were submitted to statistical analysis. Ascending stairs required more positive work …
