C.S. Lewis' Aesthetics, Adam Barkman Apr 2023

C.S. Lewis' Aesthetics, Adam Barkman

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

While some might be tempted to think that C. S. Lewis wrote more on aesthetic themes than on anything else they would be mistaken. For aesthetics has to do with broad, theoretical questions concerning beauty and art, while Lewis’ writings on literary history, literary criticism, and, to a lesser degree, literary theory tend to be more specific. In addition, although people might point to Lewis’ vast outpourings on myth as evidence of his intense interest in aesthetics, they would only be partly correct. As this author has argued elsewhere,1 even though myth touches beauty and can indeed be made into …

The Lore Of Wood And Stone: Magic In The Chronicles Of Narnia And The Lord Of The Rings, Louis Markos Apr 2023

The Lore Of Wood And Stone: Magic In The Chronicles Of Narnia And The Lord Of The Rings, Louis Markos

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

Lewis and Tolkien were apologists for magic in an age where the lore of wood and stone had all but been crushed between two opposing forces: secular technologies that seek to conquer nature and force it to serve the whims of man, and Christian churches that see in magic only the evil sorcery of Simon Magus and the Witch of Endor. In The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings, modern readers are presented with a different incantation: a magic that shatters the anti-humanistic side of technology while affirming the deep and abiding creativity of the Triune God.

Why Father Christmas Appears In Narnia, P. H. Brazier Apr 2023

Why Father Christmas Appears In Narnia, P. H. Brazier

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

"Though Lewis did not explain the presence of Father Christmas in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, given his methodology of “supposal” it is reasonable to formulate an explanation in these terms, rather than seeking allegorical coincidences; clearly, in the context of the internal coherence within the story, this explanation makes a certain sense. Father Christmas’ presence in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe may at first generate confusion and skepticism from those who fail to see that he is a “gift-bearer” sent by Aslan. In Platonic terms, however, he is ultimately a gift-bearer sent by God, Aslan’s …

De Desciptione Temporum: Revisiting C. S. Lewis' Inaugural Lecture, Jean Bethge Elshtain Apr 2023

De Desciptione Temporum: Revisiting C. S. Lewis' Inaugural Lecture, Jean Bethge Elshtain

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

A discussion of Lewis's lecture giving a "description of the times," published in C. S. Lewis, They Asked for a Paper: Papers and Addresses (London, 1962). Excerpt: "The third and no doubt most salient point for our contemporary consideration is that the “christening of Europe,” deplored by some (like Gibbon, the “humanistic unbeliever”), seemed a unique, irreversible event. “But we have seen the opposite process,” Lewis writes. To be sure, “the un-christening of Europe in our time is not quite complete; neither was her christening in the Dark Ages,” but it proceeds apace. Consequently, while our “ancestors divided history into …

From Vocal Agnostic To Reluctant Convert: C.S. Lewis And C.E.M. Joad, Joel Heck

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

After a brief consideration of Joad’s life and career this essay will examine the events that led to his return to the Christian faith, and the extent of Lewis’ influence on it. As we will see, Joad and Lewis’ interest in philosophy and the world of ideas, their reading of one another’s work and the mutual respect that emerged out of that effort, their published debate over the issue of theodicy in 1941, their lively debate over the merits of Christianity at the Socratic Club in 1944, and their exchange over the troubling issue of animal pain in 1950, comprise …

Overlap Of Cognates In The Bilingual Mental Lexicon: A Cognate Continuum Model, Ashlynn Everett, Juhi Singh, Mila Tasseva-Kurkchieva Apr 2023

Overlap Of Cognates In The Bilingual Mental Lexicon: A Cognate Continuum Model, Ashlynn Everett, Juhi Singh, Mila Tasseva-Kurkchieva

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Purpose: Cognates (i.e., words that share meanings and pronunciations in more than one language) are uniquely suited to provide insight into the bilingual mental lexicon due to their overlapping nature. Previous researchers have used a cognate/non-cognate distinction (Dijkstra & Van Heuven, 2002) or measurements of orthographic changes in words (Peeters et. al, 2013) to evaluate this overlap. By comparison, this study aimed to examine how phonological and syntactic differences between cognates impact language processing in bilinguals.

Methods: Researchers categorized cognates by level of phonological overlap as identified by listeners’ ratings of similarity. These categories were described as 1) true cognates …

How Does Midwinter Rain Affect Western Montana’S Mountain Snowpack?, Gus B. Kauffman Apr 2023

How Does Midwinter Rain Affect Western Montana’S Mountain Snowpack?, Gus B. Kauffman

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

A high-confidence effect of anthropogenic climate change is an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. One type of these events which is important to western Montana is midwinter rain, or rain on snow. In coastal states, where the mountain snowpack sits near the melting point, rain on snow can cause massive melt and flooding and diminish the snowpack residents rely on for drinking water and hydroelectric power when it melts in the spring. In Montana, however, the snowpack is typically much colder and more resistant to the devastating effects of these events. The purpose of this …

Characterizing The Enzymatic Activity And Thermostability Of Protein Β-Glucosidase B (Bglb) Mutant Y118f, Sofia Ponce, Kayla Gordon

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The purpose of this experiment was to characterize the functionality of BglB mutants and generate datasets to train artificial intelligence algorithms to predict mutant functionality. It was hypothesized that mutant Y118F would demonstrate decreased catalytic efficiency and thermostability compared to WT based on the predictive capacities of Foldit, a predictive modeling software. Foldit predicted decreased local interactions such as hydrogen bonds for mutant Y118F, suggesting decreased stability. Experimentation was performed to analyze the enzymatic activity and thermostability of mutant Y118F.

Mechanistic And Reactivity Studies Of Iron Complexes Supported By Cnc-Pincer Ligand, Julian Lomeli Apr 2023

Mechanistic And Reactivity Studies Of Iron Complexes Supported By Cnc-Pincer Ligand, Julian Lomeli

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Ammonia production is a process that is integral to a variety of industries ranging from agriculture, textiles, and pesticide production. The Haber-Bosch process has supplied the global demand for ammonia since the beginning of the 20th century, but presents the issue of being incredibly energetically costly. The catalytic reduction of ambient atmospheric dinitrogen is a potential solution to the issue presented by the Haber-Bosch process and through the use of organometallic compounds inspired by the bacterial family of nitrogenases, there is potential for much more energy efficient production of ammonia. A series of iron complexes bearing CNC-pincer ligands have previously …

Postpartum Depression Screening In Federally Qualified Health Centers (Fqhcs), Gabrielle Borkorm, Sandi Tenfelde

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

For new parents, postpartum depression can be a significant problem. Patients at risk for postpartum depression are typically assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression scale, which is among the most accurate ways of identifying them. In recent years, there has been concern about the frequency with which birthing persons should undergo postpartum depression evaluations, as well as whether these evaluations are conducted in a culturally appropriate manner, considering that there are birthing persons of all races and ethnicities. This study is a secondary data analysis of clinic level data that was collected from 2012-2017. The data refers to 31,435 birthing …

Climate Education Course Proposal For School Of Sustainability, Evelyn Winebrenner, Abbey Y. Haynes, Charlotte Roos, Stephanie Udzielak, Rachel Maria

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Seeking to address the lack of eco-literacy, we developed a syllabus for a course at Loyola University Chicago with the intended purpose of instilling climate knowledge to others. Through our own experiences studying environmental sustainability, we shared the same issue of lacking inadequate communication skills about climate change for different audiences. To develop the course structure and content, we gathered knowledge from community experts in environmental education and researched what other schools have implemented in the environmental education field. Our product is a syllabus, learning outcomes, and rationale for a new course devoted to teaching Loyola undergraduates how to educate …

Diversity in character design, storylines, and themes can have a significant impact on players, especially those from underrepresented communities. It can promote a …

Firewise Landscaping: Homeowner Knowledge, Behaviors And Educational Preferences, Kendal Beauvais, Rowan Grassi, Frederick Gleasman Apr 2023

Firewise Landscaping: Homeowner Knowledge, Behaviors And Educational Preferences, Kendal Beauvais, Rowan Grassi, Frederick Gleasman

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Although wildfire is a natural process in fire-adapted forests, it poses growing socioeconomic and health threats. Urban development and expansion into the wildland-urban interface (WUI) has heightened wildfire exposure, putting tens of thousands of homes at risk in Montana alone. The Firewise USA program was created to reduce the risk of home ignition and loss in the WUI. The program encourages WUI homeowners to engage in mitigation efforts such as using Firewise landscaping strategies to create a defensible zone around their homes and using building materials that decrease overall ignition risk. Despite strong evidence that Firewise mitigation strategies are effective, …

Depictions Of Strikes On Social Media, Zachary D. Mangels Apr 2023

Depictions Of Strikes On Social Media, Zachary D. Mangels

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Social media provides a rich source for the study of social movements. Not only do movement organizations use social media as a platform to spread their message and organize, but users can also share their thoughts about a particular movement with ease. This project seeks to understand how the socioeconomic status and gender of a social movement’s participants affect the public’s reaction to their activities. This is done by studying how these movements are described on Twitter, and if these descriptions differ among different striking professions. The types of social movement I intend to study are all strikes which were …

Supporting Mental Health For Students Experiencing Climate Anxiety And Environmental Racism, Hunter Robbins, Hanan Abdillahi, Valeria Monreal, Stephanie Black, Selena Lynch

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

There has been growing discourse on climate anxiety and environmental racism. Minorities are disproportionately affected by climate change and we recognize the impacts that climate anxiety has on these populations. Our mission is to ensure every student feels supported in the advent of the climate crisis. We did so by inventorying resources at Loyola, building community engagement with these topics through surveys and interviews, and offering recommendations to faculty, staff, and administrators for how they can better support their students. We hope to persuade Loyola to offer more information and expand on resources for climate anxiety and environmental racism.

Investigating The Role Of Tank-Binding Kinase 1 (Tbk1) In Mll-Af9+ Acute Myeloid Leukemia., Allan Youmaran Apr 2023

Investigating The Role Of Tank-Binding Kinase 1 (Tbk1) In Mll-Af9+ Acute Myeloid Leukemia., Allan Youmaran

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Sustained remission of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is negated by the proliferation of leukemia stem cells (LSCs) that survive first-line chemotherapy. Thus, there is a dire need for additional, LSC-specific therapies that can help prevent relapse. TBK1, a serine/ threonine kinase, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of AML, possibly due to its ability to promote MYC activity and FLT3 expression. Additionally, high TBK1 mRNA expression has been associated with a reduced probability of AML survival. We hypothesize that TBK1 inhibition could antagonize the stem-like characteristics of LSCs, promoting their loss-of-function death and increasing the odds of achieving a cure.

Assessing the Efficacy of Beaver Dam Analogues in Willow Restoration

Undergraduate Capstone, Ecosystem Science and Restoration Program

By Hannah Hill & Dylan Ritter

Abstract

Willow establishment is a necessary objective of stream restoration due to their role in bank stabilization, stream shading, and enhancement of biodiversity across the riparian zone. However, anecdotal observation indicated that establishment on restored streams may be lacking. For example, we observed no natural willow recruitment at a beaver dam analogs (BDAs) restoration project in Lolo National Forest (Montana). BDA’s mimic the pooling effects of natural beaver structures and are intended to help recreate historic conditions …

Journal of Appalachian Health

Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious concern to public health, causing an estimated 35,000 deaths annually in the U.S. Misuse of antimicrobials increases the rate of AMR. Self-medication with antibiotics (SMA) is a primary contributor to AMR that can be addressed through education. SMA has been reported at rates of 3% to 66% in the U.S. but has not been evaluated in Appalachia.1 Low health literacy and barriers to accessing care have been correlated with SMA and are common in many areas of Appalachia.

Purpose: This study aims to assess factors associated with SMA, demographic differences in knowledge …
