The Characterization Of The Sars-Cov-2 Receptor Binding Domain Interaction With The Human Ace2 Receptor And Potential Small Molecule Inhibitors, Camryn Carter
Honors Theses
In December 2019, a novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), was identified in Wuhan, China after numerous patients experienced pneumonia symptoms, but existing medicinal treatments were ineffective.1 The global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus caused an outbreak of the infectious disease, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which was soon after declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, referred to as the COVID-19 pandemic. According to John Hopkins University, over 1,000,000 people have died from SARS-CoV-2 infection and about 104,000,000 cases have been confirmed in the United States (US). An infection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is caused by the …

Analysis And Model Of Sensor-Less Modified Direct Torque Control Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine For Electrical Submersible Pumping Applications, Mulu Woldeyohannes
Analysis And Model Of Sensor-Less Modified Direct Torque Control Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine For Electrical Submersible Pumping Applications, Mulu Woldeyohannes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines a novel sensor-less Direct Torque Control (DTC) strategy for Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) systems using Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (SPMSM) that are used for oil and gas production. As oil and gas are the two largest fuels in use today to generate energy, the technologies to improve efficiency, increase reliability and reduce carbon footprint are essential. SPMSM is one of the main motor topologies in use to improve the reliability and efficiency of ESP systems. Due to the absence of damper winding, SPMSM cannot be started using Direct On-Line (DOL) control. Instead, Variable Speed Drives …

A Pharmacoepidemiological Study Of Myocarditis And Pericarditis Following The First Dose Of Mrna Covid-19 Vaccine In Europe, Joana Tome, Logan Cowan, Isaac Fung
Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
This study assessed the myocarditis and pericarditis reporting rate of the first dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in Europe. Myocarditis and pericarditis data pertinent to mRNA COVID19 vaccines (1 January 2021–11 February 2022) from EudraVigilance database were combined with European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)’s vaccination tracker data. The reporting rate was expressed as events (occurring within 28 days of the first dose) per 1 million individuals vaccinated. An observed-to-expected (OE) analysis quantified excess risk for myocarditis or pericarditis following the first mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. The reporting rate of myocarditis per 1 million individuals vaccinated was 17.27 (95% …
Occupational Therapists’ Role In Educating Caregivers On Pediatric Sensory Interventions Guided By Neurodiversity Principles, Deanna Bourgeois
Occupational Therapists’ Role In Educating Caregivers On Pediatric Sensory Interventions Guided By Neurodiversity Principles, Deanna Bourgeois
Student Capstone Papers
Background: Neurodivergent children often experience differences in sensory processing and self-regulation. Traditional sensory-based interventions are frequently used by occupational therapy practitioners (OTP) and caregivers to address dysregulation. However, sensory-based interventions, while often strengths-based, are not always neurodiversity-affirming.
Problem: There are minimal educational resources available to both OTP and caregivers that promote neurodiversity-affirming sensory interventions to support neurodivergent children.
Methods: The purpose of this project was to create self-paced educational modules to teach neurodiversity-affirming sensory interventions that promote children's self-regulation. To achieve this goal, the student investigator developed virtual educational modules and piloted them with OTP, occupational therapy …

An Occupational Therapy Approach To Play For Pediatric Cancer Patients, Michelle Erika Dytan, Karen Park
An Occupational Therapy Approach To Play For Pediatric Cancer Patients, Michelle Erika Dytan, Karen Park
Spring 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Play as an occupation has been long identified as a primary aspect of a child’s life (Moore & Lynch, 2017). Play provides children with ways to explore the world while learning skills to improve critical thinking, creativity, and positive self-esteem, and simply to have fun (Guirguis, 2018; Yanof, 2019). Children with cancer face barriers that limit their ability to engage in play, with negative consequences to their social, cognitive, and emotional development (Nijhof et al., 2018). There is an evident gap in a lack of play opportunities in community-based settings, which may limit a child’s personal development, social skills, and …

In The Writing’s on the Wall: Using Multimedia Presentation Techniques from the Museum World to Improve Law School Pedagogy, Professor Cecilia A. Silver demonstrates how traditional law school teaching would benefit from embracing museum techniques. The Writing’s on the Wall offers museum presentation principles as a corrective to old-fashioned law teaching. And they certainly are. But they can be much more.
The museum techniques that the article describes are a starting point for thinking about museums as a useful analog to law schools, especially in confronting the biases, hierarchies, and injustices of the past and present. The Writing’s …

A Study On The Design Of Public Speaking Preparation And Social Anxiety In Young People, Jacqueline Qiu
Theses
Modern society is demanding more and more from young people. Young people need expertise and speech skills to succeed professionally. These skills need to be good enough to be appreciated and recognized in public presentations. However, most young people need clarification when it comes to speaking. They must integrate their expertise, presentation slides efficiently, and other speech skills so that the audience or leaders can comprehend. The people who are the best at public speaking become the most successful. This paper concerns a study on speech experience, presentation skills, and presentation effectiveness as indicators to improve presentations. This project was …

BACKGROUND: People with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have a higher risk of developing breast and bowel cancers but are less likely to participate in cancer screening.
PURPOSE: Two interlinked studies examined public awareness of the fact that T2DM increases breast and bowel cancer risk, and provision of this information on diabetes websites.
METHODS: Study-1: phase-1 surveyed awareness of T2DM-increased cancer risk in a nationally-representative British sample aged 50-74 (N = 1,458) and compared respondents with and without T2DM (n = 125 vs. n = 1,305); phase-2 surveyed an additional exclusively T2DM sample (N = 319). Study-2: High-ranking diabetes websites …

INTRODUCTION: AO Spine RECODE-DCM was a multi-stakeholder priority setting partnership (PSP) to define the top ten research priorities for degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM). Priorities were generated and iteratively refined using a series of surveys administered to surgeons, other healthcare professionals (oHCP) and people with DCM (PwDCM). The aim of this work was to utilise word clouds to enable the perspectives of people with the condition to be heard earlier in the PSP process than is traditionally the case. The objective was to evaluate the added value of word clouds in the process of defining research uncertainties in National Institute for …

Interest-Major Fit And Satisfaction: Extending Theories Of Occupational Fit To Predict Academic Outcomes, Sneha Kamath
Honors Projects
According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2008), only 58% of students enrolled in a four-year bachelor’s degree program between 1995 and 1996 had successfully completed their degree by 2001 (Allen & Robbins, 2010). Some studies examining the frequency with which students change their major during their undergraduate education also offer insight into the potential reasons underlying the delayed graduation rates observed in Allen and Robbins’ (2010) study; for instance, a study by the U.S. Department of Education (2017) found that within three years of enrollment, about 30% of students pursuing a bachelor’s or associate’s degree had changed their …
Complexity Science: A Framework For Psychotherapy Integration, Günter Schiepek, David Pincus
Complexity Science: A Framework For Psychotherapy Integration, Günter Schiepek, David Pincus
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
The paradigm of complexity science provides a new way to address the problem of psychotherapy integration and allows us to bypass the various shortcomings of the linear-interventionist perspective. Nine criteria are outlined, which should be satisfied by any integrative approach to psychotherapy: (a) the use of complexity science to provide a meta-theoretical and generic understanding of change processes (from neuronal to social system levels); (b) a comprehensive and formalised modelling of change processes and personality development; (c) an integrative method of case formulation; (d) the ability to understand a variety of techniques in terms of basic change principles; (e) criteria …
Learning Outcomes Affecting Pre-K Students’ Performance: Focusing On Class Sizes, Diamond Johnson
Learning Outcomes Affecting Pre-K Students’ Performance: Focusing On Class Sizes, Diamond Johnson
Masters Projects
Research has showed that classroom size can have a huge contribution on students learning outcomes in a negative way. Instead of the constant reporting on reasons why classroom size is an issue, there should be more information provided on how to overcome larger pre-k class sizes when it’s out of the teachers control. Administration should be able to provide staff with resources that’ll help make their classrooms the best learning place no matter the circumstances. Bringing in the help needed to support teachers in their classrooms will show that larger class sizes are not a barrier, it’s a obstacle that …

Utilizing A Text-Mining Approach To Investigate Consumers’ Perception Of Secondhand Fashion Consumption: Mass-Market Vs. Luxury Market, H M Rakib Ul Hasan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The dissertation aimed to investigate (i) the difference in consumer perception between the mass-market and luxury market of secondhand fashion services, (ii) determine the types of value and strategies that can be adopted into mass-market SHF from luxury SHF business platforms, (iii) investigate the word-of-mouth communication of mass-market SHF consumers, and (iv) investigate the consumer perception of the ‘quality’ and ‘fashionability’ of the mass-market SHF product. Two studies were designed to address the research questions due to the nature of available data. The data were collected from third-party consumer review sites where consumers can review their perception of secondhand fashion …
