Summer camps are a common youth development setting in North America; however, youth from lowincome backgrounds often cannot attend because of financial barriers. Subsequently, although a robust camp literature exists, little is known about the lasting benefits for youth from low-income backgrounds. Even less is known about how these outcomes may differ based on the number of years youth attend a multi-year camp. Cytokines are a vital component of the immune system that controls the activation and growth of blood cells. However, chronic overexpression of cytokines can trigger cellular events leading to malignant transformation. The cytokine interleukin-15 (IL-15) is of particular interest, which has been shown to contribute to the development and progression of various hematological malignancies. This review will provide an overview of the impact of the immunopathogenic function of IL-15 by studying its role in cell survival, proliferation, inflammation, and treatment resistance. We will also review therapeutic approaches for inhibiting IL-15 in blood cancers.

The colloquially named reference desk at public libraries is the quintessential meeting point between patron and librarian. In fact, the desk “remains a tangible symbol of [the librarian’s] mission and work” (Johnson, 2019, p. 92). The timing and mechanisms of past hydroclimate change in northeast Mexico are poorly constrained, limiting our ability to evaluate climate model performance. To address this, we present a multiproxy speleothem record of past hydroclimate variability spanning 62.5 to 5.1 ka from Tamaulipas, Mexico. Here we show a strong influence of Atlantic and Pacific sea surface temperatures on orbital and millennial scale precipitation changes in the region. Multiple proxies show no clear response to insolation forcing, but strong evidence for dry conditions during Heinrich Stadials. Antibiotic resistance is a global health threat and often results from new mutations. Antibiotics can induce mutations via mechanisms activated by stress responses, which both reveal environmental cues of mutagenesis and are weak links in mutagenesis networks. Network inhibition could slow the evolution of resistance during antibiotic therapies. Despite its pivotal importance, few identities and fewer functions of stress responses in mutagenesis are clear. Here, we identify the Escherichia coli stringent starvation response in fluoroquinolone-antibiotic ciprofloxacin-induced mutagenesis. Binding of response-activator ppGpp to RNA polymerase (RNAP) at two sites leads to an antibiotic-induced mutable gambler-cell subpopulation. Each activates a stress response …

Current college admission criteria in the United States rely primarily on academic criteria, high school grade point average (HSGPA) and standardized test scores, including the ACT and SAT. These standards were identified more than 80 years ago, and little has changed for much of that time (Beale, 2012; National Association for College Admission Counseling, 2008). INTRODUCTION: Management of atraumatic extremity pain in a pediatric patient often poses a dilemma to the treating orthopedic surgeon. The benefits of timely intervention must often be weighed against the utility of preoperative MRI to better characterize the responsible infection or other pathology. To determine if outcomes were superior for patients who underwent preoperative vs. postoperative MRI, this multicenter study reviewed the hospital courses of pediatric patients who presented with atraumatic extremity pain, underwent irrigation and debridement, and received at least one preoperative or postoperative MRI during their admission. The cornea and cranial dura mater share sensory innervation. This link raises the possibility that pathological impulses mediated by corneal injury may be transmitted to the cranial dura, trigger dural perivascular/connective tissue nociceptor responses, and induce vascular and stromal alterations affecting dura mater blood and lymphatic vessel functionality. In this study, using a mouse model, we demonstrate for the first time that two weeks after the initial insult, alkaline injury to the cornea leads to remote pathological changes within the coronal suture area of the dura mater. Infrasound may be used to detect the approach of hazardous volcanic mudflows, known as lahars, tens of minutes before their flow fronts arrive. We have analyzed signals from more than 20 secondary lahars caused by precipitation events at Fuego Volcano during Guatemala's rainy season in May through October of 2022. We are able to quantify the capabilities of infrasound monitoring through comparison with seismic data, time lapse camera imagery, and high-resolution video of a well-recorded event on August 17. Background: The gold standard treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) is medication-assisted treatment (MAT), such as methadone. Although evidence suggests that discontinuing MAT through tapering increases the risk of relapse and overdose, some individuals may still desire to taper off methadone. Additionally, legislation in certain states mandates that MAT providers offer discontinuation options to patients. Providers must engage with patients in the tapering process through shared decision-making to anticipate challenges in the patients’ tapering experience. This paper details the methodology, data, and conclusions of a research study investigating the correlations among a growth-mindset intervention, math anxiety, and math self-efficacy. The study found that teaching students about mindset through an intervention approach did not make a significant difference in students’ math anxiety or math self-efficacy. Teacher-centered factors are discussed as having a greater impact on students’ math anxiety and math self-efficacy.

The upkeep and rehabilitation of infrastructure damage related to the shrinking and swelling of expansive soils have cost the United States billions of dollars. Biochar, an innovative and eco-friendly additive proven to improve soil permeability, nutrient retention, and mechanical properties, is investigated as an additive to Mississippi chalk. The index properties of the chalk were determined and used to characterize its nature. The geotechnical engineering properties of the chalk amended with 6% and 12% biochar were evaluated via the Proctor compaction, compression, and direct shear tests. Abstract

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate reimbursable pulp therapy trends in primary teeth performed by general and pediatric dentists.

Methods: Aggregate Medicaid claims data from 2010-2019 were obtained from the state of Georgia’s Department of Community Health. Two different primary dentition pulp therapy rates were compared between general and pediatric dentists: procedures per provider and children treated per provider. Descriptive statistics, poisson regression, and correlational analysis were performed.

Results: Pulp therapy utilization for procedures per provider and children treated per provider decreased (Incidence rate ratio (IRR)=0.97, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.95 to 0.99; …
