Impact Of Obesity On Complication Rates After Treatment Of Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis: A Retrospective Cohort Database Study, Jessica A Mcgraw-Heinrich, Simon P Kelley

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: While obesity is a well-established risk factor for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), limited data exist regarding its impact on postoperative complication rates. This study aimed to evaluate the association between obesity and complications following SCFE treatment.

Methods: We queried a large national database for pediatric patients who underwent treatment for SCFE between June 2005 and June 2025. We divided this cohort into patients with obesity and patients without obesity. We matched the cohorts with a propensity scoring algorithm on a one-to-one basis, resulting in 1,175 patients in each group. We tracked outcomes including infection, pulmonary embolism (PE), chondrolysis, …

Optical Coherence Tomography As An Emerging Technique For Identifying Pediatric Middle Ear Effusion, Ana Sofia C Ibarrola, Maritsa Ixba, Elton Lambert, Yi-Chun Liu, Anna H Messner

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Objective: Acute otitis media (AOM) and otitis media with effusion (OME) rely on accurate characterization of middle ear effusion (MEE). Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a potential modality for noninvasive analysis of MEE, thereby assisting with otitis media diagnosis. This study aims to compare the diagnostic performance of OCT with otoscopy and tympanometry in pediatric patients.

Methods: A prospective convenience sample of 164 pediatric patients aged 6 months to 12 years was recruited from two tertiary care pediatric otolaryngology clinics. During their visit, each child underwent otoscopy, tympanometry, and OCT evaluation. Scans were reviewed by both a fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologist …

Introduction: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a frequent and costly cause of pediatric emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalizations. Previous prognostic tools for CAP are limited by small samples, single-center or retrospective designs, lack of generalizability to ED settings, lack of biomarkers, or limited objective data. To overcome these limitations, we will derive and externally validate a prediction rule for pediatric CAP severity in a large, multicenter prospective cohort.

Methods: This is a prospective cohort study of children 3 months to 18 years old with CAP who present to EDs within the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network. Enrollment began 8/2023 …

Hepatopulmonary Syndrome As Presentation Of Pediatric Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis, Alexiss M Williams, Nhu Thao Galvan, John A Goss, Krupa R Mysore

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Childhood obesity is rising and leading to serious co-morbidities, among which is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) predisposing individuals to cirrhosis. We describe a young 11-year-old Hispanic male who presented with hepatopulmonary syndrome secondary to cirrhotic portal hypertension from metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), necessitating liver transplantation. Despite lifestyle modifications post-transplantation, the patient experienced persistent weight gain and recurrence of steatosis, emphasizing challenges of managing pediatric MASLD. The burden of childhood obesity is increasing and impacting children significantly earlier than previously believed. Our case is one of the few to report the severe complications of MASH in a young, pre-teen …

RNA sequences with the potential to form G-quadruplexes (rGQs) are widespread but largely unfolded in cells by unknown mechanisms. rGQ folding status is a critical regulator of RNA splicing and translation. We show that rGQs can be unfolded by SR proteins, SR-related proteins, and other Arg-rich proteins, including SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1-70K, and U2AF1. The length and composition of Arg-rich regions are key determinants of this activity: Arg residues are the primary drivers, while acidic residues attenuate the unfolding activity. To unfold ARPC2 rGQ, at least 13 Arg residues are required. Our findings identify Arg-rich proteins as previously unrecognized, helicase-independent …

Position: The Pre/Post-Training Boundary Should Govern Ip In Industry–Academia Ml Collaborations, Dirk Bergemann, Soheil Ghili, Nitzan Mekel-Bobrov

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Industry–academia ML collaborations routinely fail to launch—not for scientific reasons, but because academics must publish while companies must protect models trained on proprietary data, and no standard contract framework resolves this tension. Because contracts are negotiated by legal departments alone, many apparent legal disputes are incentive misalignment problems that only scientists at the table can correctly diagnose. We propose PBOS (Protect-the-Business / Open-Source-the-Science), a community-adoptable contract template anchored to a single technically-grounded boundary: pre-training artifacts (architectures, training code, benchmarks, untrained weights) are open science; post-training artifacts (weights trained on proprietary data) are business IP. This boundary is technically meaningful, legally …

Regional Assessment Of South Texas Wells Produced Water, Hunter T. Barnett

Water Resources Science and Technology Theses and Graduate Research Reports (Archived)

This study presents a regional assessment of produced water (PW) quality from oil and gas wells in South Texas, with a focus on variability and its implications for treatment and reuse. As oil and gas production continues to expand, PW waste streams will continue to grow. With a focus on the Eagle Ford Shale, understanding the chemical composition is critical for effective PW management. A total of 28 PW samples were collected from wells located in Pleasanton, Jourdanton, and Tilden, Texas. Samples were analyzed for key parameters including total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride, total hardness, and calcium. The results showed …

Assessing The Viability Of Cryptocurrency As A Payment Method: A Consumer Perspective, Aadavan Dharumaiyan May 2026

Assessing The Viability Of Cryptocurrency As A Payment Method: A Consumer Perspective, Aadavan Dharumaiyan

Dissertations

The problem addressed in this study was the limited mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies for daily retail transactions despite continued technological advancement and increasing institutional interest. The purpose of this qualitative study, grounded in Husserlian descriptive phenomenology, was to explore the perceptual and behavioral factors influencing this adoption gap. Participants were recruited using snowball sampling, resulting in eight participants divided into two cohorts: active cryptocurrency payment users (Cohort 1, n = 2) and cryptocurrency holders who did not use cryptocurrencies for payments (Cohort 2, n = 6). Data were analyzed using the Moustakas phenomenological approach to identify patterns in participant experiences. …

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Chronic subdural haematoma (cSDH) is an increasingly prevalent condition in older, anticoagulated, and medically frail patients, in whom recurrence and perioperative risk remain substantial despite standard surgical evacuation. Growing recognition of cSDH as an angiogenic, inflammatory disorder has prompted interest in minimally invasive strategies that combine mechanical decompression with targeted modulation of the underlying vascular pathology. This study aimed to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and health-economic profile of combined middle meningeal artery embolisation and subdural evacuation port system (MMAE-SEPS) drainage for cSDH, compared with conventional burr-hole evacuation.

METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL were searched from inception to 24th August …

Calendar Anomalies And The Adaptive Market Hypothesis: New Evidence From A Historical Financial Dataset, Júlio Lobão, Ana C. Costa May 2026

Calendar Anomalies And The Adaptive Market Hypothesis: New Evidence From A Historical Financial Dataset, Júlio Lobão, Ana C. Costa

American Business Review

This paper investigates the evolving behavior of calendar anomalies (monthly effects) within the Portuguese stock market over a period spanning approximately 120 years. By employing a combination of sub-sample and rolling window analyses, we demonstrate that the performance of these anomalies fluctuated adaptively over time. Additionally, we apply the "Superior Predictive Ability" test to assess whether these anomalies present exploitable profit opportunities, factoring in data-snooping effects. The results for the full sample indicate significantly higher returns in January and lower returns in June and July, while the positive September effect appears to be historically concentrated in earlier decades of the …

The Association Between Csr Disclosure-Action Portrayal Gap And Employee Work-Related Attitudes, April Moses, Amy Tung, Kevin Baird May 2026

The Association Between Csr Disclosure-Action Portrayal Gap And Employee Work-Related Attitudes, April Moses, Amy Tung, Kevin Baird

American Business Review

This paper provides an empirical insight into organizational impression management practices by examining the CSR disclosure-action portrayal gap, specifically the discrepancy between CSR disclosures and CSR actions, from an employee’s perspective. The paper examines the association between this gap and employee work-related attitudes (job satisfaction, employee organizational commitment, and the propensity to remain) using survey data collected from 186 lower-level managers across various industries in the U.S. The hypotheses were examined using structural equation modelling (SEM) with maximum likelihood estimate using AMOS Graphics version 25 software. It was found that many employees perceived that the CSR disclosures of their organization …

Cfo Turnover: Frequency And Explanations, Emeka T. Nwaeze May 2026

Cfo Turnover: Frequency And Explanations, Emeka T. Nwaeze

American Business Review

The frequency with which Chief financial officers (CFOs) leave their jobs has puzzled observers and analysts. In 2021, about 21% of the CFOs left their jobs. Word on the street is that CEOs favor CFOs with whom they have personal attraction but show less tolerance for those with whom they have no personal attraction, regardless of the latter’s job performance. To remain in the job, CFOs must therefore gain and sustain the CEO’s personal attraction. The immediate corollary is that the nature of CEO-CFO relations rather than job performance explain CFOs’ turnover. This study explores such a view and finds …

The Nexus Between Energy Efficiency And Cost Of Debt: Evidence From The Indian High And Low Energy Efficient Firms, Pranith Kumar Roy May 2026

The Nexus Between Energy Efficiency And Cost Of Debt: Evidence From The Indian High And Low Energy Efficient Firms, Pranith Kumar Roy

American Business Review

Globally, businesses are implementing energy-efficient strategies that align with market sustainability to enhance their performance. While the environmental and operational benefits of energy efficiency are well understood, its financial implications, particularly in debt financing, remain less clear. To achieve the objective, we examine the relationship between energy efficiency and the cost of debt in the context of emerging economies, with a focus on India, and explore the nature of this relationship. We utilize an unbalanced panel dataset comprising 4,856 Indian firms listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange between 2011 and 2022. We estimate firm-year fixed effects, a Tobit regression, and …

Does Greater Economic Freedom Lower The Nominal Interest Rate Yield And Help Offset The Interest Rate Impact Of The Primary Budget Deficit? An Ardl Analysis Of The 7-Year Treasury Yield, Richard J. Cebula May 2026

Does Greater Economic Freedom Lower The Nominal Interest Rate Yield And Help Offset The Interest Rate Impact Of The Primary Budget Deficit? An Ardl Analysis Of The 7-Year Treasury Yield, Richard J. Cebula

American Business Review

This study seeks to gain insight into the impact of economic freedom on the nominal interest rate yield on 7-year U.S. Treasury notes, an interest rate yield that has received effectively no attention in the scholarly literature during the 21st century to date. It is hypothesized that greater economic freedom acts to reduce the nominal interest rate yield on 7-year Treasury issues. Additionally, this study seeks to investigate the interest rate impact of federal government overspending. To reflect the latter, this study adopts the primary budget deficit rather than the much more commonly studied total budget deficit. The primary deficit …

Avoiding Desk Rejection In The Age Of Ai: Make The Contribution Clear, Subroto Roy, Kamal Upadhyaya May 2026

Avoiding Desk Rejection In The Age Of Ai: Make The Contribution Clear, Subroto Roy, Kamal Upadhyaya

American Business Review

The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence tools has changed the way scholarly manuscripts are prepared. Many authors now use AI-assisted tools to improve grammar, style, organization, and readability. Used responsibly, such tools can help authors communicate their ideas more clearly. However, a well-written manuscript is not necessarily a publishable manuscript. For the American Business Review (ABR), the central question remains unchanged: What does the manuscript contribute, and why should that contribution matter to ABR’s readership? Authors remain responsible for the intellectual content, integrity, and contribution of their work (Gatrell et al., 2024; Carobene et al., 2024).

Decoupling In A Different Way: Separating Supportive Policies From Observable Practices, Vinit Desai May 2026

Decoupling In A Different Way: Separating Supportive Policies From Observable Practices, Vinit Desai

American Business Review

Research on decoupling has long found that organizations facing complex external pressures may say one thing, yet do another. This extremely popular theory presumes that outsiders are unable to peer into the organization, to see what it actually does. Yet a large number of organizational practices are increasingly transparent and visible to outsiders. How do organizations respond to the external pressures surrounding these observable practices? This study suggests that they decouple in a different way, by avoiding some of the formal policies that could support those practices, in order to minimize stakeholders’ expectations and preserve the flexibility to change or …

Refinancing Of Long-Term Debt And Tendency To Overinvest, Li Liu, Amanjot Singh, Harminder Singh May 2026

Refinancing Of Long-Term Debt And Tendency To Overinvest, Li Liu, Amanjot Singh, Harminder Singh

American Business Review

We examine how the forthcoming refinancing of long-term debt affects firms’ overinvestment tendency. We find that firms reduce overinvestment in the year before the refinancing year. Refinancing risk reduces the propensity to overinvest by 6–8%. Firms with relatively higher levels of refinancing risk tend to reduce overinvestment. Since firms with high leverage and low cash holdings are more likely to suffer from liquidity and credit constraints, our findings report that such firms experience a greater reduction in overinvestment. Long-term debt refinancing disciplines managers in reducing the tendency to overinvest. Firms with lower managerial ability have a greater tendency to reduce …

Vertizontal Price Competition Between Social Media Platforms, Soumya Kanta Mishra, Sumit Sarkar May 2026

Vertizontal Price Competition Between Social Media Platforms, Soumya Kanta Mishra, Sumit Sarkar

American Business Review

We model price competition between two horizontally  differentiated social media platforms, each offering basic and premium services. Users are either platform-anchored or quality-anchored. The platforms are two-sided, with users and advertisers as the two sides. We find a unique and symmetric equilibrium in the pricing game, where platforms earn revenue from both sides. As the quality difference increases, premium service prices rise, while basic service prices drop. Users are subsidized under strong network effects, but the platforms do not subsidize users if they are sufficiently differentiated. Vertical differentiation increases platform profits if sufficient quality difference is achieved for a given …

Creative Roots, Strategic Outcomes: Ceo Childhood Imprints And The Pursuit Of Innovation, Puya Kahhali, Alexandru Roman, Haibo Liu

American Business Review

This study examines how CEOs’ early-life experiences shape strategic decision-making, focusing on the influence of parental creativity. Drawing on imprinting and upper echelons theories, we argue that CEOs with creatively employed parents develop an exploratory mindset that promotes greater investment in firm R&D. Crucially, we propose that this learning stems from behavioral modeling of exploratory mindsets through creative problem-solving—rather than the transmission of socioeconomic capital. Using a proprietary dataset of Fortune 100 CEOs and their parents’ occupations, we find robust support for this relationship. The effect is amplified under strong firm performance, while CEO age does not consistently weaken the …
