Androgen deprivation therapy is the cornerstone of prostate cancer therapy. Recent studies have revealed an association between androgen deprivation therapy and cardiovascular adverse effects such as myocardial infarction and stroke. This review summarizes the available research on the cardiovascular risk of men using androgen deprivation therapy. We also discuss racial disparities surrounding both prostate cancer and cardiovascular disease, emphasizing the importance of biological/molecular and socioeconomic factors in assessing baseline risk in patients beginning androgen ablation. Based on the literature, we provide recommendations for monitoring patients who are at high risk for a cardiovascular adverse event while being treated on androgen …

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by dopaminergic neurodegeneration and an abnormal accumulation of α-synuclein aggregates. A number of genetic factors have been shown to increase the risk of PD. Exploring the underlying molecular mechanisms that mediate PD's transcriptomic diversity can help us understand neurodegenerative pathogenesis. In this study, we identified 9897 A-to-I RNA editing events associated with 6286 genes across 372 PD patients. Of them, 72 RNA editing events altered miRNA binding sites and this may directly affect miRNA regulations of their host genes. Asam folat diketahui memiliki afinitas yang cukup tinggi pada reseptor folat (Kd=10-10) yang diekspresikan berlebih di permukaan sel-sel kanker tertentu (seperti sel kanker ovarium dan serviks). Oleh karena, itu asam folat sering digunakan sebagai suatu pentarget aktif untuk membawa obat atau dalam hal ini nanopartikel, sehingga secara spesifik menuju sel kanker yang diinginkan, baik untuk tujuan diagnosis maupun penyembuhan penyakit kanker. Biosintesis ZnO nanopartikel-CTAB dilakukan dalam suasana basa dengan interaksi antara ion Zn2+ , CTAB dan media ekstrak air daun jambu biji. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah biosintesis ZnO nanopartikelCTAB, karakterisasi dan aplikasinya sebagai antibakteri. Karakterisasi produk ini dengan spektrofotometer FTIR dan XRD. Suspensi ZnO nanopartikel-CTAB digunakan sebagai antibakteri Escherichia coli dengan metode difusi sumuran. Gugus fungsi Zn-O muncul pada bilangan gelombang 486,06 cm-1 dan ukuran kristalinitas ZnO nanopartikel-CTAB diperkirakan sebesar 10,08 nm. Rata-rata zona hambat ZnO nanopartikel - CTAB terhadap Escherichia coli pada setiap konsentrasi adalah 9,10 -10,70 mm.

Penuaan merupakan suatu proses alamiah yang dapat dipengaruhi oleh radikal bebas. Adanya radikal bebas dapat dicegah oleh agen antioksidan. Salah satu tanaman hias yang diketahui mengandung fenolik dan flavonoid serta aktivitas antioksidan yaitu daun kayu bulan (Pisonia alba S). Berdasarkan penelusuran pustaka, belum terdapat penelitian yang membandingkan aktivitas antioksidan daun kayu bulan dengan metode DPPH, FRAP dan ABTS. The large number of antiseptic products on the market provide choices for people to choose alcoholic or non-alcoholic hand sanitizers. Most commercial hand sanitizers are 70% to 90% alcohol-based. For some people, the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers is not friendly for sensitive skin. Therefore, in this study efforts were made to minimize the use of alcohol as an antiseptic agent in hand sanitizers by using lime peel extract and betel leaf extract. Kapok (Ceiba pentandra L.) is traditionally used in medicine. Based on the phytochemical screening, the leaves contain phenolic compounds, including flavonoids and tannins. The method used to determine the total phenol content was the Folin-Ciocalteu method using gallic acid as standard solution. The linear regression equation obtained on measured at 765 nm is y = 0.0054x + 0.0272 with determination (r) and correlation coefficient (R2 ) of 0.9994 and 0.9997. Total phenolic content in ethanol extracts is 89.185 µg/ml calculated as gallic acid. Meanwhile, determination of flavonoid content used comparison standard of quercetin used the AlCl3 method. Mempelajari interaksi biomolekul-partikel nano emas (AuNP) penting dilakukan untuk mengeksplorasi potensi pemanfaatan AuNP pada bidang diagnostik dan terapeutik. Interaksi biomolekul-AuNP melibatkan interaksi elektrostatik dan transfer muatan dari gugus fungsi nukleofil ke AuNP, maka mempelajari interaksi biomolekul-AuNP dibutuhkan metode mekanika kuantum. Aquatic and riparian food webs are inextricably linked. In deserts, they provide critical energy subsidies to surrounding terrestrial food webs, but these vital subsidies are not guaranteed; streams in arid lands are especially sensitive to perturbations. In this dissertation, I investigated the role of an oft-cited threat to stream communities in the lower Colorado River basin: non-native crayfish. I contributed to methodologies in passive integrated transponder use and length-weight relationships in crayfish to aid future research. I leveraged stable isotope analysis of δ15N, δ13C, and δ2H to understand crayfish role in the food webs. …

Metabolic illnesses (MET) are detrimental to brain integrity and are common comorbidities in patients with mental illnesses, including major depressive disorder (MDD). We quantified effects of MET on standard regional brain morphometric measures from 3D brain MRI as well as diffusion MRI in a large sample of UK BioBank participants. The pattern of regional effect sizes of MET in non-psychiatric UKBB subjects was significantly correlated with the spatial profile of regional effects reported by the largest meta-analyses in MDD but not in bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or Alzheimer's disease. A highly stereo-selective, one-pot, multicomponent method was chosen to synthesize the novel functionalized 1, 3-cycloaddition spirooxindoles (SOXs) (4a-4h). Synthesized SOXs were analyzed for their drug-likeness and ADME parameters and screened for their anticancer activity. Our molecular docking analysis revealed that among all derivatives of SOXs (4a-4h), 4a has a substantial binding affinity (∆G) -6.65, -6.55, -8.73, and -7.27 Kcal/mol with CD-44, EGFR, AKR1D1, and HER-2, respectively. Catechol-modified bioadhesives generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) during the process of curing. A robust design experiment was utilized to tune the H2O2 release profile and adhesive performance of a catechol-modified polyethylene glycol (PEG) containing silica particles (SiP). An L9 orthogonal array was used to determine the relative contributions of four factors (the PEG architecture, PEG concentration, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) concentration, and SiP concentration) at three factor levels to the performance of the composite adhesive. Myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) in acute coronary syndromes is a condition in which ischemic/hypoxic injury to cells subtended by the occluded vessel continues despite successful resolution of the thrombotic obstruction. For decades, most efforts to attenuate IRI have focused on interdicting singular molecular targets or pathways, but none have successfully transitioned to clinical use. In this work, we investigate a nanoparticle-based therapeutic strategy for profound but local thrombin inhibition that may simultaneously mitigate both thrombosis and inflammatory signaling pathways to limit myocardial IRI. Oregon Population Estimates and Reports

The population data in the 2022 annual report tables were compiled by the Population Research Center, Portland State University, 4/15/2023.

The tables in this workbook present the 2022 population estimates produced by the Population Research Center, Portland State University. The July 1 estimates of total population for counties and cities and towns were certified December 15, 2022.

Some tables include the U.S. Census Bureau's decennial Census counts and historical population estimates produced by our Center, and other tables include calculations of change since Census 2020. Also included are population estimates for broad age groups and 5-year age groups.

This research examined how self-efficacy, collective efficacy, and professional development compared between core content and special education middle school teachers working with middle school students in reading comprehension and fluency. Accordingly, no statistically significant difference in teacher self-efficacy between core content and special education teachers was discovered based on the ANOVA analysis results. An analysis of professional development and collective teacher efficacy showed mixed results with a negative relationship predicted between increased professional development hours for core content teachers. Ectothermic insects like crickets directly alter their physiological processes depending on the environment in which they live. Insects use vibrational structures to produce and sense airborne sounds in intraspecific communication. These signals are important in courtship as well as defensive behavior against predators. For example, insects can detect the presence of nearby predators using vibrations. With an increase in anthropogenic activity, processing these signals and the constant threat they represent may increase stress on insects, subsequently affecting their behavior and physiology. For centuries, depictions of Native American culture have largely been constructed by White authors and have thus reflected white settler colonialist ideology. This paper suggests that one way to counter this point of view when studying Native American history is to turn to fiction, specifically fiction written by Indigenous authors. Taking as an example Ojibwe author Louise Erdrich’s Plague of Doves, a novel based on the real-life massacre of a frontier family in the late nineteenth century, this paper argues that the creative fiction of Indigenous authors can counter the biased, incomplete, and often incorrect official histories of White–Native interactions. …
