It is important for Kansans to understand how streamflow relates to precipitation and temperature in Kansas, as streamflow variability has implications for water resources, ecosystem health, and many other activities. Streamflow across eight stream gauges in the Smokey Hills Watershed is positively correlated with precipitation and negatively correlated with maximum summer temperature, most prominently in late spring and throughout summer. With climate variability and longer-term changes, it will continue to be paramount to document these relationships.

examine characteristics of individuals affected by poverty in the United States. First, we will analyze data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau through previous measures and their implementation of the Supplemental Poverty Measure. Secondly, we will study data from 2021 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates to establish a relationship between poverty and education. The findings reveal a statistically significant relationship between poverty and education. Education alone is not enough to fight poverty. Further research is needed in overlapping poverty in the United States.

Background: Congenital syphilis occurs when a pregnant mother passes the syphilis infection to their child during pregnancy. This treatable sexually transmitted infection (STI) is the leading cause of stillbirths and neonatal deaths (Trivedi et al., 2020). According to the CDC (2021), the incidence of congenital syphilis increased 254% from 2016 to 2020. Wildfires are prevalent events in many areas throughout the world, and this study specifically focuses on wildfires in Western Kansas. The aim of this study is to determine relationships between the landscape, the Alluvial and Dakota Aquifers, and five wildfires to determine possible relationships between these wildfires and groundwater levels. For decades, women's imprisonment rate has grown twice as high as men's. Enforcement of low-level drug charges and low-level, nonviolent offenses is one of the contributing factors to the increase. Literature indicates that incarcerated women tend to experience poly-victimization and adverse childhood experiences, which causes severe mental health issues and risk behaviors. These adverse experiences compound with the harsh environment of imprisonment that further post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTSD) and depression. Incarceration of women disrupts family systems within their community and creates an influx within their child welfare system. The ASF1A and HIRA are histone chaperones highly conserved in many organisms. The protein interactions between ASF1a and HIRA and their role in plant development are not understood in Arabidopsis thaliana. Here, we present our attempt to generate mutations at ASF1a and HIRA genes using CRISPR/Cas9 technology and analyze their interactions through computational molecular biology. Our current efforts focus on preliminary sequence analyses, CRISPR/Cas9 system preparation, and transgene delivery.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a non-invasive technique that applies electrical currents through surface electrodes at selected locations to reorganize the brain neural network based on neuroplasticity. The therapeutic effect of tVNS has been reported related to the sensory neural network, but few studies are on the motor neural network. We hypothesized that when applying the tVNS to the recurrent laryngeal branch of the vagus nerve, the laryngeal muscles responsible for speech will become more flexible, and their motor activities will be enhanced. We investigate the influence that the Growth Domestic Product (GDP) has upon the infant mortality rate. Our study comes from research from "World Development Indicators" from the Databank. The results from our regression explain 87.17% of total variation of infant mortality from the variables used. Our findings showed that GDP is negatively correlated with infant mortality. The findings are consistent with previous studies on the determinants of infant mortality rates.

COVID-19, also known as coronavirus disease of 2019, is a virus that was first discovered in December of 2019. Symptoms of COVID-19 feel much like the flu, a cold, and pneumonia. In this report we analyzed how a country's gross domestic product per capita (gdppc) affects COVID-19 deaths. Along with gdppc we included other variables that may have had an influence on the death rate. This is an important study due to the correlation that could be associated with higher living standards possibly leading to lower number of COVID-19 deaths.

The purpose of this study is to understand the molecular functioning of the Arabidopsis AS2 gene. In our experiments, we used CRISPR technology to create mutations in the AS2 gene. These mutations are predicted to change AS2 protein structure and function, which may result in a mutated leaf. This experience provides the students with hands on practice and encourages the development of socialization within the student population of FHSU.
