Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the ICU setting and a continued source for investigation to improve outcomes. It is characterized by acute respiratory failure with an identifiable insult, bilateral infiltrates on imaging, and a PaO2/FiO2 ratio (PF ratio) of less than 300 mmHg. It can be further classified into mild, moderate, and severe ARDS with a PF ratio of less than 300, 200, and 100 mmHg respectfully. Treatment requires elucidation of the underlying insult to the pulmonary system and prompt treatment. Presented here is a case of ARDS secondary to herpes …

Initiative to decrease unnecessary hemostatic agent transfusion in cirrhotic patients undergoing paracentesis: a resident-led approach quality improvement project to prevent transfusion overuse. Currently, there is no official guideline placed in the hospital for the administration of a hemostatic agent such as fresh frozen plasma in the setting of an elevated international normalized ratio, which paradoxically is an anticipated finding in cirrhotic patients. As per the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), the worsening opioid epidemic has created a snowballing effect, in that there is not only an increase in invasive MRSA infections but also in complications from MRSA. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare sarcomas, most commonly seen in patients with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), that are characterized as aggressive with high rate of local recurrence. Among NF1 patients, the risk of developing MNPSTs is approximately 8-13% over a lifetime. Primary MPNST is exceedingly rare, of which the vast majority are concentrated in the head and neck region. Here, we present a case of a 40-year-old male with NF1 who presented with a giant MPNST that originated in the right proximal femur. The present work explored the connection between personality and the Dualistic Model of Passion (DMP) and weather psychological safety moderated this relationship. The first study comprised 109 Introduction to Psychology students at the University of Richmond, and the second study measured 128 MTurk participants. The web-based survey administered to both samples consisted of measures assessing Harmonious Passion (HP), Obsessive Passion (OP), the Big Five traits, the Dark Triad traits, and Psychological Safety (PS). This thesis examines how race and gender shape the meaning that Black women associate with their beauty consumption practices and spending. Much of the existing feminist scholarship on beauty has been postfeminist, privileging the concept of agency and empowerment over structural realities. However, the materialist feminist frame has more utility to address how beauty operates within the lives of Black women as a form of distinct gendered racial oppression. The concept of aesthetic capital emerges from the materialist feminist perspective and suggests that beauty demands the investment of considerable economic resources and can deliver economic returns. Engaging Drama: Does Drama Increase Student Engagement In A Second-Grade History Class?, Jasmine Villanueva

This research investigated how drama integration benefitted students’ academic achievement and their engagement in history. This study integrated drama and history in a second-grade class, by allowing students to create tableaus to present and share information. The study used pre and post assessments, an attitudes survey to measure students’ attitudes towards history before and after integration, and the researcher also recorded student engagement at the beginning and end of drama integration. This study showed significant improvement in student content knowledge through the use of tableaus, and inconclusive results as far as engagement and student attitudes were concerned.

Purpose/Background

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder that can significantly affect a patient’s psychological state. Because of this, medication nonadherence is reported as one of the most common causes of relapse and rehospitalization in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Although long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics can help provide more continuous treatment, they do not address other factors that affect treatment adherence. This scoping review will evaluate existing literature to assess if a multimodal approach, such as increased patient follow-ups in addition to scheduled, current-practice LAI treatment and management, may increase treatment adherence in adult patients diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Summary

Background: Compliance with oral antipsychotic medications (OAP) in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia has been a challenge. Challenges to OAP include medication side effects, lack of ability to obtain medications, and missing doses, among other factors. As a result of this non-compliance, those taking oral antipsychotic medication are at greater risk for exacerbation of their illness. The consequence of relapse carries considerable risks with each psychotic event. The study aims to compare if medication treatment adherence is greater in clients with schizophrenia using oral antipsychotics (OAPs) vs. long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotic medications.

Delirium is a form of brain malfunction marked by abnormalities in cognition, disorientation, memory, and awareness. This scoping review's aim is to examine bodies of research on the effects of length of stay (LOS) in the ICU using Confusion Assessment Method-Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU).
