OBJECTIVES: One in 5 people in the United States lives with chronic pain. Many patients with chronic pain experience a subset of specific co-occurring pain conditions that may share a common pain mechanism and that have been designated as chronic overlapping pain conditions (COPCs). Little is known about chronic opioid prescribing patterns among patients with COPCs in primary care settings, especially among socioeconomically vulnerable patients. This study aims to evaluate opioid prescribing among patients with COPCs in US community health centers and to identify individual COPCs and their combinations that are associated with long-term opioid treatment (LOT).

An Actionable Step: Evaluating The Impact Of A Text-Based Vocabulary Intervention To Support Middle School Emergent Bilinguals’ Vocabulary Growth, Annisha R. H. Susilo
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Research over the last two decades has shown middle school EBs are at risk for academic failure due to compounded systematic challenges that prevented them from acquiring reading proficiency level required to succeed in academic setting (Bowman-Perrott et al., 2010; Deussen et al., 2017; Sheng et al., 2011; Slama, 2012). EBs face shortages of qualified teachers, lack of access to quality instruction, and lack of appropriate assessment tools (Carnoy & Garcia, 2017; Sanchez, 2017; Umansky, 2016). This crisis is particularly acute for middle schoolers, as academic content often requires extensive reading. Middle school EBs are falling behind academically in comparison …
Impacts Of Attribution Style On Academics, Personal Relationships, And Extracurricular Activities: A Mixed Methods Study Of Learned Helplessness In Secondary Students, Joslyn Vendola
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
The phenomenon of learned helplessness is the state in which an individual no longer views their outcomes as contingent upon their effort in response to previous failure outcomes and stressful events which were out of their control. Learned helplessness symptoms are often observed amongst students who experience other challenges simultaneously, such as low academic achievement, emotional disability (ED) diagnosis, and/or low-socioeconomic status (low-SES). The existing LH research focuses on identification, labeling, and offering interventions, such as learned optimism (LO) and attribution retraining. The lack of qualitative data, specifically student input, is a gap in the current body of research that …

The immune system plays an important role in controlling epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). EOC is considered to be a "cold tumour," a tumour that has not triggered a strong response by the immune system. However, tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and the expression of programmed cell death ligand (PD-L1) are used as prognostic indicators in EOC. Immunotherapy such as PD-(L)1 inhibitors have shown limited benefit in EOC. Since the immune system is affected by behavioural stress and the beta-adrenergic signalling pathway, this study aimed to explore the impact of propranolol (PRO), a beta-blocker, on anti-tumour immunity in both in vitro and …

Hospital-acquired infections are a major cause of death worldwide, and poor hand hygiene compliance is a primary reason for their spread. This paper proposes an artificial intelligence, microcontroller, and sensor-based system that monitors and improves staff hand hygiene compliance at various critical points in a hospital. The system uses a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to detect and track if staff have followed the WHO hand rub/hand wash guidelines at alcohol dispensers, hospital sinks, and patient beds. The system also uses RFID tags, vibration motors, LEDs, and a central server to identify staff, alert them of their cleaning requirements, monitor their …
A Pwm Method For Reducing Dv/Dt And Switching Losses In Two-Stage Power Converters, Mahima Gupta, Abhijeet Prem
A Pwm Method For Reducing Dv/Dt And Switching Losses In Two-Stage Power Converters, Mahima Gupta, Abhijeet Prem
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Today's semiconductor devices are accompanied by high switching frequencies (> kilo-hertz) and small transition times (< micro-seconds). Such fast transition times are accompanied by undesirable effects such as voltage overshoots at the load terminals, ground leakage currents, wide-band electromagnetic noise, etc. With the advent of wide band-gap devices, several applications are moving towards higher switching frequency operation with at-least an order of magnitude reduction in transition times. While these characteristics are considered necessary to break the next-generation barriers in power density, efficiency and applicability, the undesirable effects due to faster transitions are expected to present obstacles. This work proposes a PWM approach to modify the shape of the switching voltages to overcome the disadvantages of the fast transition times without any increase in switching losses. In fact, several of the switching transitions feature ZVS operation, resulting in reduced switching losses. The paper discusses the analytical details of the approach using a simple DC-DC boost-buck converter and extends it to a DC to three-phase AC converter using the principles of space vector modulation. The paper presents detailed simulation and comparative results in terms of voltage over-shoots over long cables, loss calculations and electromagnetic noise. Results from a laboratory-scale working prototype confirm the benefits of the proposed approach in terms of EMI and loss reduction.
Low-Cost Microstereolithography 3d Printing With Microfluidic Microsampling Applications, Lauren Twombly
Low-Cost Microstereolithography 3d Printing With Microfluidic Microsampling Applications, Lauren Twombly
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
The growing field of stereolithography 3D printing has welcomed a new age ofmicrofluidic device fabrication techniques. When compared to previous planar fabrication techniques such as soft-lithography, stereolithography 3D printing offers highly automated procedures, reduced fabrication times, and greater complexity of device features. To date, the greatest tradeoff for 3D printing in microfluidic device fabrication is poorer resolution when compared to soft-lithography which can produce feature sizes on the nanometer scale. The poorer resolution of 3D printing limits the feasible size of features. While highly sophisticated 3D printers are capable of achieving sub 10 μm resolution, these instruments are incredibly expensive …

Detection Of Nitrogen Dioxide Via Graphene-Enhanced Raman Scattering, Spencer Hazeslip
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper presents the development of a nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensor that utilizes the phenomenon of graphene-enhanced Raman scattering (GERS). The sensor consists of monolayer graphene on a silicon wafer, functionalized noncovalently with Copper(II) 2,9,16,23-tetra-tert-butyl-29H,31H-phthalocyanine (CuTTPc) via the solution soaking method. A custom sensing chamber was constructed to enable Raman spectra to be collected during NO2 exposure. The response of the sensor was found to be linear between 10 and 100 ppm NO2, indicating that it could be used for both detection and quantification. Furthermore, the sensor was shown to be reusable after …
Carbon Dioxide Reduction On Large Area Liquid Metal Gallium-Indium Electrocatalysts, Thomas Hollis
Carbon Dioxide Reduction On Large Area Liquid Metal Gallium-Indium Electrocatalysts, Thomas Hollis
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is widely known as a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming due to the burning of fossil fuels. The carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) is widely studied to reutilize CO2 to useful products, including methane, ethane, and carbon monoxide. This project studies the use of liquid metal gallium-indium as an electrocatalyst to perform CO2 reduction to carbon monoxide (CO) or possibly solid carbon in various solutions. Gallium-indium is characterized and studied through its “wetting” properties and adhesion to substrate foil through the measurement of contact angles inside solution. These liquid …

A Characterization Of The Quadruple Mutant Of The Fgf1-Fgf2 Heterodimer, Kenlee Claborn
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
Human Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) was first identified as a protein whose function was to aid in cell proliferation, but now, FGF has been determined to consist of over 23 different proteins in 7 different subfamilies with three different types of cell-signaling purposes.1 In the first subfamily are the two most notable and studied proteins, Fibroblast Growth Factor 1 (FGF1) and Fibroblast Growth Factor 2 (FGF2). Respectively, they are known for their unique capabilities of cell proliferation/mitogenesis and angiogenesis.2 To induce the cell-signaling pathway that leads to the function of these proteins, FGF1 and FGF2 binds to their …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
A novel chimera protein, consisting of the C-terminus of Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) 21 and super FGF1, a mutant of the wild-type FGF1, was studied. The protein retained the stability of sFGF1 and the endocrine acting behaviors and binding efficiency of FGF21, so that it could be more practical for therapeutic uses as a wound healing and angiogenic agent. sFGF1- FGF21 was expressed and purified before utilizing various biophysical techniques to measure its stability, secondary and tertiary characteristics, and metabolic activity.
An Investigation On The Effect Of Conserved Hinge Histidine On Influenza Hemagglutinin(Ha2) Protein Conformation Using Md Simulations, Nada Tolba
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
Hemagglutinin is a protein on the surface of Human Influenza Viruses.1 It is composed of two glycopolypeptide domains, the HA1 and HA2 domains. Previous studies have found that across different strains of Influenza viruses, HIS435 residues remain conserved.4 In studies where mutations occurred in hinge-site histadine residues, the Influenza virus was inactive.4 These investigations indicated a significant role of HIS435 (hinge-site histadines) in virulence. Four systems were created using Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Each system was composed of an Isolated HA2 trimer solvated in a 150 mM NaCl rectangular water box at 310 K under isobaric and …
Digital Privacy For Reproductive Choice In The Post-Roe Era, Aziz Z. Huq, Rebecca Wexler
Digital Privacy For Reproductive Choice In The Post-Roe Era, Aziz Z. Huq, Rebecca Wexler
Faculty Scholarship
The overruling of Roe v. Wade has unleashed a torrent of regulatory and punitive activity restricting previously lawful reproductive options. But the turn to the expansive criminal law and new schemes of civil liability creates novel concerns, quite distinct from the pre-Roe landscape a half-century ago. Reproductive choice, and its nemesis, turn upon information. For pregnant people, deciding on a choice of medical care entails a search for advice and services. Information is at a premium for them. Meanwhile, efforts to regulate abortion began with clinic closings. But they will quickly extend to civil actions and criminal indictments of patients, …

The purpose of this study is to express, purify, and characterize recombinant FGF19 to build the foundation for the creation of stable mutants, which can be used to treat a variety of common diseases including type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The parameters for overexpression in Escherichia coli were optimized according to optical density, inducer concentration, …
Developing Methods For Pattern Transfer In Photoelectrochemical Lithography, Ashlyn Descarpentrie
Developing Methods For Pattern Transfer In Photoelectrochemical Lithography, Ashlyn Descarpentrie
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
The microprocessor industry has historically been driven by the goal of shrinking devices. To create features small enough to fit on such devices, photolithography has conventionally been used in the micropatterning of noble metal surfaces. Photolithography is a complicated and expensive process that involves a cleanroom, metallization processes, and photoresist. While this investment makes sense for high revenue applications, a number of microelectronic devices do not require nanometer-scale patterned features. Examples of such applications include specific types of antennae, sensing electrodes, and photocatalysts. Photolithography for these devices is thus too costly in both money and energy. The Coridan lab has …
Studying The Phosphorylation Of Isocitrate Dehydrogenase In Humans, Hannah Smith
Studying The Phosphorylation Of Isocitrate Dehydrogenase In Humans, Hannah Smith
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
Isocitrate dehydrogenase is an important enzyme in the citric acid cycle where it catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of isocitrate to alpha-ketoglutarate. While there are three isoforms of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH1, IDH2, and IDH3), this research will focus on IDH1. The phosphorylation of isocitrate dehydrogenase is a process that has been linked to the formation of both luminal-like and basal-like breast cancer. Despite these correlations, the mechanisms that cause breast cancer development are unknown. To examine this, an enzyme activity assay for each phosphorylation variant and crystallization were conducted. The results of these indicate that phosphorylation at each site (IDH1-T77, IDH1-S188, …

Should brokers have the unfettered right to restrict investor trading? GameStop, a brick-and-mortar video game retailer, had been experiencing declining revenues since 2016. However, GameStop saw its share price climb almost 1000 percent in the span of a one- week period from January 21, 2021 to January 27, 2021 due to retail investors buying significant amounts of GameStop shares during that period. Melvin Capital, a hedge fund, ended up losing billions as they were betting that GameStop shares would lose value instead of increase—a practice referred to as short selling. On January 28, 2021, brokers inexplicably halted trading on GameStop …

Mass E-Carceration: Electronic Monitoring As A Bail Condition, Sara Zampierin
Faculty Scholarship
Over the past decade, the immigration and criminal legal systems have increasingly relied on electronic monitoring as a bail condition; hundreds of thousands of people live under this monitoring on any given day. Decisionmakers purport to impose these conditions to release more individuals from detention and to maintain control over individuals they perceive to pose some risk of flight or to public safety. But the data do not show that electronic monitoring successfully mitigates these risks or that it leads to fewer individuals in detention. Electronic monitoring also comes with severe restrictions on individual liberty and leads to harmful effects …

The presumption of innocence is a foundational concept in criminal law but is completely missing from quasi-criminal immigration proceedings. This Article explores the relevance of a presumption of innocence to removal proceedings, arguing that immigration law has been designed and interpreted in ways that disrupt formulating any such presumption to facilitate deportation. The Article examines the meaning of “innocence” in the immigration context, revealing how historically racialized perceptions of guilt eroded the notion of innocence early on and connecting the missing presumption to persistent associations between people of color and guilt. By analyzing how a presumption of innocence is impeded …
