Powering Up: Examining Frameworks For Community Engagement And Collective Tenant Action Around Energy Efficiency In New Haven, Ct, Alixandra P. Rachman

Academic Articles

Energy is an essential household need to sustain health and wellbeing. Connecticut has one of the highest energy costs in the nation and leaves a majority of residents experiencing energy insecurity, where households are not able to meet their energy needs. Energy efficiency retrofits have been introduced as an effective solution to sustain thermal comfort indoors. Despite increased funding and resources for energy efficiency, federal and state programs continue to go widely unused by tenants for several reasons from health and safety barriers, tenant-landlord power imbalances, and administrative challenges to name a few. This thesis aims to describe Connecticut’s energy …

Baseball’S Evolution In The 21st Century, And How It Exemplifies Human Response To Change, Jonathan Sharpe May 2023

Baseball’S Evolution In The 21st Century, And How It Exemplifies Human Response To Change, Jonathan Sharpe

Honors Projects

The game of baseball has changed a lot in the past twenty years. It can be primarily attributed to the explosion in data analytics and how they are used to evaluate baseball players. This led to different player profiles being preferred and eventually led to the development of players changing. As a result, the strategies employed have also evolved and turned into a different game than seen only a couple of decades ago. This paper will explore the changes that the game has seen. On the other hand, Major League Baseball has also implemented its own changes to try and …

Linguistic Factors Modulating Gender Assignment In Spanish–English Bilingual Speech, Abel Cruz May 2023

Linguistic Factors Modulating Gender Assignment In Spanish–English Bilingual Speech, Abel Cruz

Modern Languages & Literature

Drawing on naturally-occurring bilingual speech from a well-defined codeswitching community in Southern Arizona, this study examined the influence of semantic gender (a.k.a. biological gender), analogical gender, and other-language phonemic cues in modulating gender assignment in Spanish–English codeswitched speech. Thirty-four Spanish–English early bilinguals completed a forced-choice elicitation task involving two codeswitching environments: Spanish determiner–English noun switches (Task 1) and English–Spanish switched copula constructions (Task 2). The results revealed that for human-denoting nouns, bilinguals assigned grammatical gender based on the presupposed sex of a noun's referent in both syntactic environments tested. As for inanimate nouns, bilinguals were more likely to assign masculine …

Cell Type Classification Via Deep Learning On Single-Cell Gene Expression Data, Shanta Chowdhury May 2023

Cell Type Classification Via Deep Learning On Single-Cell Gene Expression Data, Shanta Chowdhury

All Dissertations

Single-cell sequencing is a recently advanced revolutionary technology which enables researchers to obtain genomic, transcriptomic, or multi-omics information through gene expression analysis. It gives the advantage of analyzing highly heterogenous cell type information compared to traditional sequencing methods, which is gaining popularity in the biomedical area. Moreover, this analysis can help for early diagnosis and drug development of tumor cells, and cancer cell types. In the workflow of gene expression data profiling, identification of the cell types is an important task, but it faces many challenges like the curse of dimensionality, sparsity, batch effect, and overfitting. However, these challenges can …

Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction Using Cobalt Catalysts On Surfaces, Tianqi Jin May 2023

Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction Using Cobalt Catalysts On Surfaces, Tianqi Jin

Master's Theses and Capstones

Ever-increasing fossil-fuel combustion along with massive CO2 emissions has aroused a global energy crisis and climate change. The most straightforward way of tackling this problem is to reduce emissions, but this might not be enough or even possible in all instances, where the use of fossil fuels cannot be simply avoided. A more proactive approach is to capture and convert CO2 into value-added products. Unfortunately, CO2 is thermodynamically stable and its thermocatalytic conversion requires high temperatures and pressures. Alternatively, CO2 reduction could be carried out using light (photocatalysis) or electricity (electrocatalysis) as the energy input. In Chapter I, an introduction to …

Using Variable-Resolution Grids To Model Precipitation From Atmospheric Rivers Around The Greenland Ice Sheet, Annelise Nicole Waling May 2023

Using Variable-Resolution Grids To Model Precipitation From Atmospheric Rivers Around The Greenland Ice Sheet, Annelise Nicole Waling

Master's Theses and Capstones

Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are synoptic-scale features that transport moisture poleward and have been shown to cause short duration, high-volume melt events in the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS). This project supports the effectiveness of variable-resolution (VR) grids in modeling ARs and their subsequent precipitation around the GrIS using a study period of 1 January 1979 to 31 December 1998. VR simulations from the Community Earth System Model (CESM2) bridge the gap between limitations of global climate models and regional climate models while maximizing computational efficiency. VR grids improve the representation of ARs, in part by resolving small-scale processes. ARs are identified …

Automating Lackenby's Method: The Design Of A Set Of Scripts To Execute Lackenby's Method With Mcnaull's Expansion In Rhinoceros 3d, Mara E. Kramer May 2023

Automating Lackenby's Method: The Design Of A Set Of Scripts To Execute Lackenby's Method With Mcnaull's Expansion In Rhinoceros 3d, Mara E. Kramer

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In vessel design, modifying the design of a preexisting hull is a common practice to save time and labor compared to designing a hull from scratch. This can be achieved either by manually adjusting the hull model in a 3D modeling software or by systematically adjusting certain vessel parameters using an algebraic method. However, these methods are time-intensive and do not fully utilize the capabilities of modern software. To address this issue, this paper presents a set of Rhinoscript and Python scripts that automate part of the hull modification process using Lackenby’s method with McNaull’s expansion. The developed code utilizes …

Reading The Room: Memory, Dwelling, And The Everyday, Sara R. Hardin May 2023

Reading The Room: Memory, Dwelling, And The Everyday, Sara R. Hardin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In any space, there is a residue that coats the present with a patina of memory. Creating layered imagery in dream-like paintings and prints, I use the domestic realm as a metaphor for the internal world of the mind, memories, and private thoughts, including them in compositions with symbols like the boundaries of windows, doors, and gates. These metaphorical structures also portray outward identities, which guard inner emotions. The conceptual aspects of these compositional elements weave together memories of the past and places of the present into a unified whole.

I began graduate school at the beginning of the COVID-19 …

Therapeutic Approaches To Working With Perinatal Loss Clients: A Grounded Theory Study, Heather H. Olivier May 2023

Therapeutic Approaches To Working With Perinatal Loss Clients: A Grounded Theory Study, Heather H. Olivier

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Perinatal loss (i.e., miscarriage, stillbirth, termination, and infant death) is commonly referred to in the literature as an invisible loss, non-loss, and even medical event. It is an ambiguous loss exhibiting the dialectical contradiction between the physical absence and psychological presence of the baby accompanied by disenfranchised grief, a reaction to a loss that is unacknowledged by society. Despite the likelihood of mental health clinicians working with clients who have experienced perinatal loss, there has yet to be a therapeutic model designed specifically for the unique grief and trauma reactions presented in this population. Existing grief models do not address …

Sachsenhausen, “More Of The Same”: The Transition Of A Nazi Concentration Camp Into A Soviet Special Camp, Douglas C. Molin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Totalitarian use of the concentration camp to subjugate and control its citizens was exemplified on a massive scale with the world’s most oppressive twentieth century regimes, Nazi Germany, and the USSR. While evolved from very different political origins, concentration camps were the primary instrument within each nation’s security services resulting in human misery and death on a massive scale. One camp, Sachsenhausen, near Berlin was especially prominent, designed and constructed in 1936 as a model camp with the IKL eventually housed adjacent to it. In May 1945 the Soviets invaded Germany, and within months Sachsenhausen was utilized by the …

Hydrological Modeling For The Impact Of Predicted Climate Change And Urbanization: A Case Study Of The Lower Mississippi River Basin, Amelie E. Lagarde May 2023

Hydrological Modeling For The Impact Of Predicted Climate Change And Urbanization: A Case Study Of The Lower Mississippi River Basin, Amelie E. Lagarde

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippi River Basin is the United States’ largest watershed and consists of many subbasins. Each subbasin has hydrological processes including flow rate, evapotranspiration, and groundwater flow. It is important to understand how these processes change through shifts in weather, time, and land use. This study uses the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to predict how changes in temperature, rainfall, and land use can change hydrological processes responses. This study concludes that, for the studied subbasin, a high representative concentration pathway (RCP) will result in lower flow rates and ground water flow as well as higher evapotranspiration by the …

Theory Application In Home-Based Counseling, Victoria Rodriguez May 2023

Theory Application In Home-Based Counseling, Victoria Rodriguez

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Home-based counseling is a modality of counseling where a provider conducts sessions within a client’s home. Providing services in the home can improve access to services in rural areas or for clients without access to transportation or childcare and can increase participation in services in cases where traditional office-based services have been unsuccessful.

Despite these benefits for clients, home-based counselors might struggle with applying counseling theory within this setting. Theory is an integral part of both counselor identity and treatment planning; a theoretical orientation helps counselors conceptualize client issues, guide treatment goals, and assess progress. Due to the lack of …

Props, Bianca Walker May 2023

Props, Bianca Walker

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In their artwork Bianca Walker takes a refreshing and historically engaging approach to the act of painting. After researching through photographic references of black people from the early 1900s the artist reimagines these photographs as painted portraits using a drip painting method purposely eliminating paint brushes from their practice. Incorporating more utilitarian materials such as drop cloth and palms, the artist’s relationship to the traditional act of paintings versus their current practice mirrors the current point of view placed upon and change of view that they would like to be seen in conversations around black working-class people from this period.

Community In The Cell: Queer Women’S Space And Place In New Orleans, Jordan Hammon, Jordan Hammon May 2023

Community In The Cell: Queer Women’S Space And Place In New Orleans, Jordan Hammon, Jordan Hammon

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines queer women’s history and space/places of community in New Orleans using spatial analysis and feminist theory to fill the silences. The Special Citizens Committee for the Vieux Carré laid the foundation for regulating queer women and transmasculine people starting in the 1950s. Even after the committee ended, New Orleans Police Department and the Vice Squad had the power to invade and harass places of community for queer women and transmasculine people. Despite this hostility, queer women and transmasculine people resisted and made a place for themselves in New Orleans. As a result of their persistence through visibility …

The Story Of Jennie Steers: An Examination Of Race, Gender, And Lynching In Northwest Louisiana, Lauren Smith May 2023

The Story Of Jennie Steers: An Examination Of Race, Gender, And Lynching In Northwest Louisiana, Lauren Smith

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

As the nineteenth century ended, the American South entered a new century equipped with the foundations of a Jim Crow society. Through political intimidation, segregation, and racial violence—most notoriously through the practice of lynching—white Southerners reasserted white supremacist rule. Yet the lynching of Black men in this era is more often documented than the plight of Black women at the hands of white mobs and local authorities. By focusing on Jennie Steers, a woman lynched outside of Shreveport, Louisiana in 1903, this project sheds light on the violent history of Northwest Louisiana and the ways in which Black women navigated …

Functional Ecology Of Calling And Mating In The Cricket Species (Acheta Domesticus And Telogryllus Commodus), Fadeke Adeola May 2023

Functional Ecology Of Calling And Mating In The Cricket Species (Acheta Domesticus And Telogryllus Commodus), Fadeke Adeola

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Whole organism performance traits are measures of an organism’s ability to complete dynamic functions relevant to fitness within the contexts of both sexual and natural selection. Performance capacities are subject to allocation based life history trade-offs, but are also frequently implicated in signaling via visual or auditory displays, many of which are sexually dimorphic. But although performance traits are known to influence the outcome of male combat interactions, the effect of performance on mating interactions is poorly understood. Recently, the invertebrate neurotransmitter octopamine has been shown to affect performance expression in house crickets independent of the underlying morphology, raising the …
