Judicial Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: How Do Diverse Judges Affect Sentencing Guidelines In The State Of Minnesota, Morgan Bausman
Judicial Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: How Do Diverse Judges Affect Sentencing Guidelines In The State Of Minnesota, Morgan Bausman
Political Science Theses and Capstones
Equal representation within the judicial system is very important. The state of Minnesota has four-hundred-forty-one judges, all different. When the legal system was created, the stereotypical judge was a white male. The legal system that represents the country should grow and diversify along with society. The issue of diversified judicial representation, with a focus on the race and gender of such judges, is a contentious debate across the country. Prior research has studied judges at the federal level and showed that diversity matters, but there have been no studies done at the state level, specifically in Minnesota. I gather data …
Vaccines In The 20th Century, Samantha Valakos
Vaccines In The 20th Century, Samantha Valakos
Senior Honors Projects
In 1796 Edward Jenner marked a turning point in epidemiology after testing a theory and developing the first vaccination known to mankind: smallpox. Since his work, many scientists have discovered that virulent strains of a virus can be attenuated in humans, consequently aiding in the creation of many different vaccines. Nowadays, one of the most common vaccines for humans to receive is the influenza vaccine. The influenza vaccine is very effective in prevention of getting the virus, as well as reducing the risk of flu-like symptoms. However, each year many individuals continue to choose not to get the flu vaccine …
Attitudes Towards Gluten Free Foods And Celiac Disease In Italy, Joellyn Speredelozzi
Attitudes Towards Gluten Free Foods And Celiac Disease In Italy, Joellyn Speredelozzi
Senior Honors Projects
This project addresses the perception and realities of living with Celiac’s Disease in Italy. I combine a literature review with my own anecdotal experiences as an individual with Celiac’s Disease who has lived and studied in Italy. In my paper, I first describe the high awareness of gluten-free living that I noted the first time I studied abroad, being the impetus of this project. I follow this with the history and science of Celiac’s Disease for those who may be unaware of this serious chronic medical condition. I then continue to describe personal experiences I had while living in Naples, …
Memory In Motion: Dance And Movement Therapy In Older Adults With Alzheimer's And Related Dementia, Ashley Picard
Memory In Motion: Dance And Movement Therapy In Older Adults With Alzheimer's And Related Dementia, Ashley Picard
Senior Honors Projects
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and is caused by progressive neurodegenerative changes in the brain that alters one’s memory, attention, and language. As cognitive function decreases, people with dementia experience deficits in mobility, resulting in muscle stiffness and rigidity that debilitates their personhood. Therefore, an appropriate approach that creates a stimulating, pressure-free environment to encourage those with Alzheimer’s to move can help them have a renewed quality of life, positive behavior changes, and decreased anxiety. More specifically, incorporating dance-based exercises that utilize rhythmization, cognitive integration, social inclusion, and improvisation can be a holistic and practical approach …
Sociosexual Behaviors Of Chimpanzees Vs. Bonobos: Are They The Key To Explaining Human Sociosexual Behaviors?, Libby Ware
Senior Honors Projects
We share 99% of our DNA with bonobos (Pan paniscus) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), which are also very closely related to each other, sharing a last common ancestor about one million years ago. Both of them are more closely related to humans than either of them is to gorillas or orangutans. Because of our close evolutionary connections, chimpanzees and bonobos serve as models for our ancestors, and as windows into our ancient past and “human nature.” Other than being similar in appearance, chimps and bonobos are very social, living and cooperating in groups. But their differences have long been emphasized. …

The Effects Of Mental Health And Burnout In Medicine In Relation To The Wilson Model Of Leadership, Kevin Beck
Senior Honors Projects
The purpose of this project is to determine the effects that burnout and poor mental health can have on the ability of health care professionals to effectively do their job and lead others in medicine. Burnout, as defined by Merriam Webster, is “the exhaustion of physical or emotional strength or motivation usually as a result of prolonged stress or frustration.” This is a self-reported quantitative study analyzing information acquired via a survey to determine if there is a relation to burnout and poor mental health in medicine and the ability to effectively lead others and complete work tasks and this …
Relationships Between Horizontal And Vertical Movements Of Shortfin Mako Sharks (Isurus Oxyrinchus) In The Western North Atlantic Ocean, Katie Gheysen
Relationships Between Horizontal And Vertical Movements Of Shortfin Mako Sharks (Isurus Oxyrinchus) In The Western North Atlantic Ocean, Katie Gheysen
Senior Honors Projects
Highly mobile pelagic predators, such as tuna, swordfish, and sharks, often undergo changes in depth over a 24-h period and exhibit diel vertical migration (DVM), presumably to maximize foraging efficiency. Studies on the diving behavior of shortfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus) have been inconclusive as to whether this species consistently exhibits DVM. We investigated relationships between horizontal and vertical movements in shortfin mako sharks by using location and depth data collected from SPLASH tags and pop-up satellite archival tags (PSAT). A state-space model was applied to location data derived from SPLASH tags to generate continuous tracks and to …

New Inhibitors Of Insulin-Degrading Enzyme, Jake Sarno
New Inhibitors Of Insulin-Degrading Enzyme, Jake Sarno
Chemistry Master’s Theses
Expre ed in nearly all mammalian tissues, insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) is a ubiquitous zinc endopeptida e which cleaves many peptides endogenous to human and other organisms. IDE is implicated to hold vital roles in homeostasis, involved in several cellular pathways related to cellular growth, proteasome turnover, and heat- hock respon e. The enzyme also hydrolyzes several ligands of medical interest, such as insulin, amyl in, and amyloid-beta peptide in vivo, and calcitonin, ghrelin, glucagon, and atrial natriuretic peptide in vitro. However, while much is known about the enzyme's function, the mechanism of the IDE cleavage reaction remains poorly understood. The …

Evaluation Of Landowner Perceptions Of Participating In Conservation Easements In The Beaver Lake And Illinois River Watersheds: Motivators And Barriers, Lauren Gwaltney
Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Conservation easements (CEs) are an effective way to protect natural resources with minimal impact on the daily activities of landowners (LOs), but there is still resistance to CE adoption among landowners in Northwest Arkansas and Northeast Oklahoma. Therefore, there is a need to characterize LOs’ perceptions of CEs in these regions and adjust easement organization programming accordingly. This study followed a non-experimental, exploratory survey research design to gather information regarding demographics, awareness, attitudes, and preferences of LOs in the Beaver Lake and Illinois River watersheds. Likert-scale survey responses were assigned numerical values and averaged to find Pearson correlation coefficients between …

Texas A&M Law Review
What is art in human life? When we think of art, it seems at first blush to be just another human endeavor. It is brush strokes of some chosen substance across a piece of canvas or paper. It is the piece of wood or stone left after pieces have been removed by human hands. It is sounds made of a certain pitch and in a certain pattern, rather than another.
Yet we know that art is more. It is more than the mechanics of creation or even the materials of which it is comprised. It is more not because of …
A Cure For Cmb: Empowering Undergrads With Course-Based Research, Aisling Macaraeg
A Cure For Cmb: Empowering Undergrads With Course-Based Research, Aisling Macaraeg
Senior Honors Projects
The Cell and Molecular Biology Department at the University of Rhode Island has a gap between introductory and advanced laboratory courses offered to undergraduate students. The implementation of a Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) catered towards second- and third-year undergraduate students would benefit both students and faculty. A CMB-based CURE would allow for the integration of all four tracks within the CMB major through hands-on laboratory experience and create a low-stakes environment for students to practice independent experimental thinking. Students
will reinforce basic laboratory skills and be exposed to novel concepts that can be further explored in detail through advanced …

Every year thousands of students embark on a journey overseas to study abroad. This experience can be stressful for many and bring about a great deal of questions and uncertainties. The goal of this project is to create a resource for students to utilize before going abroad. A survey was sent out to University of Rhode Island (URI) students that went abroad Summer 2022, Fall 2022, and Spring 2023. Students that filled out the survey agreed to participation in an interview regarding their journeys abroad. Interview responses were then implemented as content within the guidebook. These students went to a …

A very significant part of college is on-campus living and the aspect of food. Most college campuses have multiple dining halls and many different food spots for grab- and-go food, snacks, and pre-packaged meals. This can all be very exciting for incoming students as there is a huge variety of choices for each meal. However, the aspect of food on college campuses can also be very stress-inducing for students that are food insecure. Food insecurity on college campuses is unfortunately around 30% of students at 4-year universities. This can lead to significant problems for students academically, mentally, and physically.

In Vitro Screening Of 12 Strains Of Birdsfoot Trefoil (Lotus Corniculatus) Against Haemonchus Contortus, Isabella Caldwell, Elizabeth Kass, Rebecca Brown, Katherine Harper Petersson
Senior Honors Projects
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), primarily Haemonchus contortus, are one of the leading causes of death in sheep and goats. As resistance to commercial dewormers continues to rise, alternative strategies for GIN parasite control are needed. Preliminary studies have demonstrated that secondary plant compounds in birdsfoot trefoil (BFT, Lotus corniculatus) possess antiparasitic activity against GIN. In this study, the antiparasitic effect of twelve strains of BFT on the hatching of H. contortus eggs and motility of larvae was determined. BFT strains were harvested in June of 2020 and hay-dried. H. contortus eggs were recovered from mono-infected Dorset yearlings by running fresh …

However, due to my lack of talent, I thought it would never be achievable. However, now, as the world of social media has evolved, I’ve realized that there are other avenues I can take toward this dream. Now, anybody can become famous. It doesn’t matter where you are from or if you’re talented- all that matters is that you are willing to consistently share your life on …

Exploring Grief Resources For College Aged Students Who Have Lost A Parent, Shelby Plotkin
Senior Honors Projects
Grief and loss can affect individuals of all ages; however, the most commonly overlooked population is young adults, typically between the ages of 15 to 25. For this project, I specifically focused on grief in college age students who have lost a parent. Having personally dealt with the loss of my father when I was 19 and a sophomore in college, I became acutely aware of the needs of college age students in dealing with my own grief. I discovered this population of young adults are most definitely overlooked when it comes to having support and age-related resources available throughout …

Although approximately 80% of chronic diseases across all ages can be treated, prevented, or even cured with proper nutrition therapies, preliminary evidence suggests that medical schools in the United States deemphasize its importance by not allotting appropriate time and resources to nutrition education. The Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the accrediting organization for U.S. medical schools, recommends no less than 25 hours of nutrition education. The objective of this study was to evaluate how nutrition education content …

For my honors project, I am continuing my research with my academic advisor, Dr. Daniels on creating an approach to the Multiple Sequence Alignment problem in the Rust programming language. This approach will be attached to Dr. Daniels’ CLAM (Clustered Learning for Approximate Manifolds) to enable it to globally and locally align DNA sequences. This research was divided into three separate parts: building the algorithms, implementing them into CLAM’s metric, and measuring and improving the performance of the algorithms. This project includes two separate but related algorithms; Needleman-Wunsch algorithm and the Smith-Waterman algorithm.
The Needleman-Wunsch algorithm takes in two DNA …
