Behind The Design, Natalia C. Smith May 2023

Behind The Design, Natalia C. Smith

Honors Theses

Higher education is a place of learning and such a space requires the optimal design for a learning setting. While classrooms are an important space for learning in higher education, they are not the only place, where learning occurs on campuses. These spaces outside of the classroom are referred to in ways such as “private study areas”, “writing centers,” and “third spaces”, but in this paper, these spaces are referred to as informal study spaces. These spaces are identified as any space, outside of a formal classroom setting, where students regularly congregate for academic purposes. Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) has …

The Dreamwalker: A Novella In Progress, Camryn Johnson

Honors Scholar Theses

The DreamWalker is a fantasy novella based in the near future city of Nova where beings with extraordinary powers exist alongside "normal" humans. One night there was a mass raid on the homes of extras and they were thrown into the Centrum, a specially curated holding facility that keeps extras and their powers indefinitely imprisoned. Aybis, a Dreamwalker, is one of these beings, though she managed to escape this prison. Now she works for Marco, a handler of sorts, in the underground, using her ability to enter and sometimes manipulate dreams of the wealthy and elite clientele of Nova who …

The Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Mergers And Acquisitions, Goodwill, And Goodwill Impairment In The Technology Industry, Dee Webster May 2023

The Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Mergers And Acquisitions, Goodwill, And Goodwill Impairment In The Technology Industry, Dee Webster

Honors Scholar Theses

I explore associations between COVID-19 and changes in mergers and acquisitions (M&As), goodwill valuation, and goodwill impairments in the technology industry. Prior literature explores the pandemic’s effects on the dynamics of M&As, goodwill, and goodwill impairment, but are not specific to the pandemic’s impact on the technology industry. This study references prior literature to provide conceptual support as well as research findings to examine the overall changes in technology companies of interest in this study. First, I find that M&A activity before COVID-19 and during COVID-19 was not substantially different when averaged. Second, I find that there was a significant …

The Contribution Of Self-Compassion To Anxiety And Mood In Daily Life, Yamini Pant May 2023

The Contribution Of Self-Compassion To Anxiety And Mood In Daily Life, Yamini Pant

Honors Scholar Theses

Self-compassion, the act of being kind and understanding towards oneself, has been shown to have positive impacts on mental health. Depression and anxiety are both common mental health disorders that can interfere with an individual’s ability to function in daily life. Several studies have shown that self-compassion correlates with depression and anxiety at a cross-sectional level and across longer periods of time (e.g., several months). In the present study, we examined the fluctuations and the directionality of self-compassion, depression, and anxiety on a day-to-day basis over the span of a week. We also examined the ways that worry and rumination …

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2023

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is a highly aggressive brain tumor with rare survival beyond two years. This poor prognosis is largely due to the tumor's highly infiltrative and invasive nature. Nearly 80% of DMGs harbor K27M mutation in the genes encoding histones H3.1 (H3F3A) or H3.3 (HISTIH3B) variants, often with concurrent mutation in ACVR1. Inhibitor of DNA-binding (ID) proteins are key transcriptional regulators of genes involved in lineage commitment and associated with invasiveness and poor clinical outcomes in multiple human cancer. Prior work showed that recurrent K27M and ACVR1 mutations increase ID1 expression in cultured astrocytes, but this has …

Ciclesonide Protects Against Lps-Induced Lung Endothelial Inflammation And Acute Lung Injury, Heather Menden, Sherry M. Mabry, Venkatesh Sampath

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2023

Background: Synthetic glucocorticoids (sGC) are used to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. Ciclesonide (CIC), a sGC pro-drug, is FDA-approved for treatment of children with asthma. We reported that in comparison with dexamethasone, CIC does not affect brain development when used in the neonatal period. We have also shown that LPS, derived from gram negative bacteria, causes lung endothelial cell (EC) immune activation that contributes to sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI). In this study, we hypothesized that LPS-induced endothelial inflammation and ALI will be inhibited by CIC.

Objectives: a) Investigate the mechanisms by which CIC inhibits lung EC inflammation …

Qualitative Insights From Physical And Mental Health Providers In Pediatric Integrated Health Care Settings, Nikolaus Schuetz May 2023

Qualitative Insights From Physical And Mental Health Providers In Pediatric Integrated Health Care Settings, Nikolaus Schuetz

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2023

Background:

It is widely accepted that the mind and the body are connected, so it is critical to better understand the connection in order to improve the healing process, quality of care, and well-being. Integrated care is associated with improved patient outcomes and is well-positioned to address conditions with known comorbidities (such as chronic health conditions and depression/anxiety), serve people who use primary health care providers for mental health needs (especially racial/ethnic minorities), and address the impact mental health can have on physical health trajectories and outcomes. However, there is disagreement regarding how to best combine treatments. There are more …

Shared In Rare: Engaging Stakeholders To Develop A Shared Elsi Research Agenda Across Rare Diseases, Courtney D. Berrios, Jeremy R. Garrett, Linda Jones, Nancy Petersen, Meghan Strenk, Rare Voices Advisory Group

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2023

Research on individual rare diseases presents challenges such as small sample sizes and limited funding sources, while research efforts spanning across rare diseases present difficulty in applying outcome measures to conditions with variable manifestations. Common experiences in rare disease (extended diagnostic odyssey, chronic conditions, need for advocacy, and challenges finding and managing multi-specialty care) create shared ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI). Shared in Rare is a stakeholder engagement project to leverage the shared experiences of patients and families impacted by rare disease to develop an ELSI research agenda that is both applicable across rare diseases and guided by patient …

Exploring Pediatric Cardiac Readmissions In The Interstage Period Using The Champ Multi-Site Repository, Ryan Thompson, Amy Ricketts, Janelle R. Noel-Macdonnell Phd, Keith Feldman, Lori A. Erickson

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2023

Background: Infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) require continued and complex care in the first year of life, including regularly scheduled clinic visits. Unfortunately, given the high-risk nature of these patients, care also frequently includes hospital readmission which contributes to a high level of burden on the health care system, patient, and family who often live far from treatment centers. Remote home monitoring has successfully reduced unplanned readmissions and intensive care days during readmissions. We aimed to explore the readmissions that are occurring after the neonatal hospital discharge through the end of remote home monitoring through the interstage period using …

Blocking Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection Utilizing Decoy Cell Surface Receptor Proteins, Eric S. Geanes, Rebecca Mclennan, Oishi Paul, Santosh Khanal, Todd Bradley

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2023

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections result in a significant number of hospitalizations for young children and the elderly each year, and current infection rates continue to rise, leading to a substantial public health burden. While numerous vaccine candidates are in clinical trials, there is currently no approved RSV vaccine to prevent infection or antiviral treatment after infection. There is an urgent need to find new therapeutics and strategies that reduce severe RSV disease that could improve health and save lives. The RSV fusion (F) protein is critical for binding host cells and mediating infection and is the target of most …

Torque And Power Capabilities Of Coreless Axial Flux Machines With Surface Pms And Halbach Array Rotors, Yaser Chulaee, Donovin Lewis, Matin Vatani, John F. Eastham, Dan Ionel

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

This paper investigates employing a Halbach PM rotor array to increase torque and power density within coreless axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines. Analytical and 2/3-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) methods are developed to study torque and power capabilities within an example double-rotor, single-stator coreless AFPM machine with a PCB stator. Compared to a surface PM topology of the same mass and volume, employing a Halbach array increases torque density by as much as 30% through increased airgap flux density amplitude. Multiple parametric studies are performed to explore methods of increasing torque and power density while employing Halbach arrays combined …

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

This paper presents a multi-objective design optimization for a novel direct-drive wind turbine generator. The proposed electric machine topology employs an outer rotor of the reluctance type and a special modular stator including three phase-windings and spoke-type permanent magnets (PMs). Each stator module includes a single coil toroidally wound around the ferromagnetic core. Consecutive stator modules are separated by PMs and include coils belonging to a different phase. An optimization method with three objectives: total power loss, weight, and torque ripple, and with one constraint for a minimum acceptable value for the power factor, is described. The design examples are …

Play That Funky Music: A Study Of Bacterial Contamination Of Wind Instruments, Ashley Clark May 2023

Play That Funky Music: A Study Of Bacterial Contamination Of Wind Instruments, Ashley Clark

Honors Theses

Should there be standards to routinely clean instruments and what methods are available for that? It has been found that the bacteria and other microorganisms inside of musical instruments may be the culprit of respiratory infections in musicians (King et al. 2016). This project was divided into two experiments. First, clarinet reeds were introduced to three different species of bacteria. Then mouthpieces of trombonists and clarinetists of Eastern Kentucky University were swabbed and analyzed using a Colony Forming Unit assay. Bacteria was found to live on unused reeds for up to 30 days. Mouthpieces house millions of bacteria, determined by …

An Erp Measure Of Non-Conscious Memory Reveals Dissociable Implicit Processes In Human Recognition Using An Open-Source Automated Analytic Pipeline, Richard J. Addante, Javier Lopez-Calderon, Nathaniel Allen, Carter Luck, Alana Muller, Lindsey Sirianni, Cory S. Inman, Daniel L. Drane May 2023

An Erp Measure Of Non-Conscious Memory Reveals Dissociable Implicit Processes In Human Recognition Using An Open-Source Automated Analytic Pipeline, Richard J. Addante, Javier Lopez-Calderon, Nathaniel Allen, Carter Luck, Alana Muller, Lindsey Sirianni, Cory S. Inman, Daniel L. Drane

Psychology Faculty Publications

Non-conscious processing of human memory has traditionally been difficult to objectively measure and thus understand. A prior study on a group of hippocampal amnesia (N = 3) patients and healthy controls (N = 6) used a novel procedure for capturing neural correlates of implicit memory using event-related potentials (ERPs): old and new items were equated for varying levels of memory awareness, with ERP differences observed from 400 to 800 ms in bilateral parietal regions that were hippocampal-dependent. The current investigation sought to address the limitations of that study by increasing the sample of healthy subjects (N = 54), applying new …

Evaulating Key Parameters Impacting Asphaltene Permeability Reduction Behavior In Micro-Pores During Carbon Dioxide Injection, Sherif Fakher, Aseel Al-Sakkaf, Mahmoud Ali May 2023

Evaulating Key Parameters Impacting Asphaltene Permeability Reduction Behavior In Micro-Pores During Carbon Dioxide Injection, Sherif Fakher, Aseel Al-Sakkaf, Mahmoud Ali

Faculty Journal Articles

Asphaltene is a heavy component of crude oil that can deposit in the pores of the formation and result in permeability reduction, and with time, pore plugging. Understanding the behavior of asphaltene and the mechanism by which it precipitates and deposits in the crude oil is vital in reducing asphaltene damage in the formation. Also, by evaluating asphaltene permeability reduction in the formation, we can predict the behavior of the asphaltene and determine the extent to which pore plugging will occur. This research studies the impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) pressure, temperature, and oil viscosity on asphaltene permeability reduction. These …

An Economic Perspective On Self-Reported Happiness In Taiwan, Shih Yu Sung May 2023

An Economic Perspective On Self-Reported Happiness In Taiwan, Shih Yu Sung

All Theses

Happiness research has become a topic of interest in recent years. The OECD's "Better Life Index," the U.N.'s "World Happiness Report," and Taiwan's "National Happiness Indicator" are examples of initiatives to understand better and evaluate the well-being of people. After the well-known "Easterlin Paradox" was proposed, more and more economists started researching the economics of happiness. Economists studied the relationship between reported happiness and income and the relationship between reported happiness and socioeconomic factors and demographic factors. In this study, I use data from the Taiwan Social Change Survey of 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 to analyze potential factors …

Illicit Online Pharmacies: A Scoping Review, Yam B. Limbu, Bruce A. Huhmann

Department of Marketing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This scoping review presents the extent and nature of the body of literature on illicit online pharmacies (IOPs) and identifies research gaps. Using the five-step framework developed by Arksey and O’Malley, we searched PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINAHL, Science Direct and PsycInfo to retrieve relevant studies published in English in peer-reviewed journals. The search strategy identified forty-three articles that met the inclusion criteria. Ten themes were identified and categorized into five clusters: patient risk, healthcare providers, marketing and supply chain, public health and society, and policy and regulation. Research into these clusters has evolved over time and has focused …
