Development Of Three Novel Edna Assays For Detecting Coastal Sharks, Kristina Dawn Flanigan May 2023

Development Of Three Novel Edna Assays For Detecting Coastal Sharks, Kristina Dawn Flanigan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is an emerging, non-invasive community monitoring tool. This study aimed to determine if eDNA methods can be reliably used in a large brackish, partially mixed estuary by developing and testing three novel eDNA primers, for Sandbar Sharks (Carcharhinus plumbeus), Blacknose Sharks (Carcharhinus acronotus), and Bonnetheads (Sphyrna tiburo). These primers were designed to target 109, 156, and 120 base pair (bp) fragments, respectively, of the highly conserved NAD2 gene in the mitochondrial genome of each species. Primer function was validated through testing against 102 known genomic source samples and 25 filtered water samples from aquaria in which …

The Underrepresentation Of African American Students In Ap And Honors Courses In Wilks County School District, Ivy Collins Palmer May 2023

The Underrepresentation Of African American Students In Ap And Honors Courses In Wilks County School District, Ivy Collins Palmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Across the nation, research has shown that in an Advanced Placement (AP) class almost anywhere in the United States, it is likely to have the same phenomenon: a class made up primarily of white, middle- and upper-class students (Jeffries & Silvernail, 2017). Limited access to rigorous coursework for students from low socioeconomic households and minority groups can affect the number of minorities who matriculate to top research universities (Baylor, 2016). Access to AP and honors courses opens up new opportunities for students and pushes them toward success and future aspirations (McCauley, 2007). The problem is the African American (AA) population …

Reviving Local Journalism And Storytelling: Reporting On The "Oc Weekly", Lauren E. Montoya

Whittier Scholars Program

In an effort to reflect the importance of local journalism, the following project is a narrative piece reporting on the closure of the OC Weekly, an alternative news source that ended in 2019, which was hardly reported on. This project aims to change that by further demonstrating the severe impact on communities in which these meaningful sources of news disappear, and why they matter. It calls on people to advocate for and change transform journalism into more than corporate-centered news that too often disregards the critical aspect of storytelling. Storytelling brings communities together and is the life of journalism, …

Effects Of The Lack Of Transportation On Health, Nibitika Khadka May 2023

Effects Of The Lack Of Transportation On Health, Nibitika Khadka

2023 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Health is affected by a multitude of factors; however, most people do not realize how significant of an impact environmental health can have on the human body. Environmental health is made up of several components, one of the most notable being transportation. In Arlington, Texas, there is a lack of public transportation. Instead, residents rely on ride-share services such as Via, Uber, or Lyft (City of Arlington, 2022). This can cause air pollution rates to skyrocket, as most residents need to rely on their own form of transportation or on someone else’s car – whether its someone they know or …

The Relationship Between County-Level Rates Of Obstetric Care Providers And Rates Of Preterm Births In Rural And Urban Counties., Toni-Ann Samuels May 2023

The Relationship Between County-Level Rates Of Obstetric Care Providers And Rates Of Preterm Births In Rural And Urban Counties., Toni-Ann Samuels

2023 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Preterm births have been rising in the United States. Texas rural hospital closures are rising, which could contribute to fewer OB-GYNs and poorer birth outcomes. The purpose of the research was to determine correlations between OB-GYNs and preterm births in rural and urban Texas counties using secondary data from the Area Health Resources Files. The design was cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational. There was a moderate, statistically significant correlation between preterm births and OB-GYNs in both rural (n=115, rs= 0.53, p=<0.0001) and urban (n=72, rs= 0.73, p=<0.0001) counties. On average, there was 1 OB-GYN per 10,000 female population aged 15-44 in rural counties compared to 3 OB-GYNs per 10,000 in urban counties. Given that more urban OB-GYNs are available, further research is needed to understand factors influencing where rural women deliver babies (rural or urban hospitals), and how factors contribute to preterm birth differences among women residing in rural and urban areas

The Role Of Disclosure In Defi Markets: Evidence From Twitter, Amanda Aw Yong

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) platforms use self-executing smart contracts to provide financial services and are programmed to automatically post all transactions on the public blockchain. Notwithstanding this public availability of blockchain information, DeFi platforms also aggregate these transactions and disclose the summarized blockchain information on their Twitter accounts. This paper studies whether and how voluntary disclosure of blockchain information plays a role in the transparent DeFi market. I find that the number of blockchain-related tweets is associated both with an increase in the platform’s Total Value Locked (TVL) and with an increase in the unique number of platform users. The relationship …

The Audrey Hepburn Image: Stardom, Gendered Authorship, And Creative Agency, Livi Edmonson

Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses

Female stardom was an essential component to the star system and film industry in Hollywood’s Golden Age. During the postwar era, one of the most influential female stars was Academy award winning actress, Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn’s emergence in the industry, as well as her branding as a “postwar Cinderella,” was representative of the emerging intersection between fashion and film. The association of Hepburn’s stardom with the two mediums --- especially to that of haute couture --- was solidified through her association with French couturier and close friend, Hubert de Givenchy. However, Hepburn’s agency becomes subverted in scholarship and popular culture …

The Barriers To Movement: The Effects Of Anthropogenic Linear Features On The Space-Use Behaviors Of Mule Deer And Pronghorn In Utah, Ronan B. Hart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Human development of structures like roads, fences, and other linear features can make it difficult for animals to move around their environment, affecting their ability to find food and avoid danger. Animal movement and the way they use space comes about from their responses to their surroundings and their choices to balance risk and reward. Because of this, we can understand how roads and fences affect wildlife by studying the way they move around their habitats. In this thesis, I focused on two large herbivores, mule deer and pronghorn, and studied how they use the space within Utah, United States …

Research on rural Four Corners Region (FCR) residents’ views about uranium production has focused mainly on predominately-White communities in the northern portion of the region. Meanwhile, residents in the southern part of the region, which includes the Navajo Nation and other tribal nations and communities, have dealt with the worst environmental and health effects of the uranium boom. Through a series of three studies in the southern part of the FCR, I explore the uranium-related views and experiences of racially diverse FCR residents.

In the first paper of this dissertation, I used 53 interviews to explore how sociodemographic factors (e.g., …

Teachers’ Learning Of Fraction Division With Area Models, Michael Leitch May 2023

Teachers’ Learning Of Fraction Division With Area Models, Michael Leitch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research shows that fractions concepts play an essential role in the learning of later mathematics. However, fractions are notoriously difficult to learn and difficult to teach. Division with fractions is a frequent subject in mathematics education research because division is the most conceptually difficult of the four basic arithmetic operations and rational numbers are the most conceptually difficult numbers in K-12 mathematics curricula.

In the U.S., teachers are generally proficient with mathematical procedures, but often have difficulty explaining the concepts underlying the procedures. Research indicates a positive association between student learning and teachers’ depth of conceptual understanding of mathematics. Thus, …

From Mountain Streams To Urban Rivers: An Assessment Of Microplastic Sources And Characteristics, Macy Gustavus May 2023

From Mountain Streams To Urban Rivers: An Assessment Of Microplastic Sources And Characteristics, Macy Gustavus

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Plastic products are produced and discarded at an alarming rate. Bottles, bags, toys, and clothing break down into tiny plastic pieces called microplastics, ranging in size from an eraser on the top of a pencil to smaller in size than a red blood cell. Microplastics are becoming so common in the environment that they travel in the atmosphere, rivers, and ocean currents in ways that are similar to other types of Earth Systems Cycles (i.e., the water cycle). In this study, we explored microplastic sources and sinks in a freshwater river system and how seasonal changes in discharge affect how …

A Fine-Scale Understanding Of Sagebrush Islands To Improve Restoration Outcomes In The Intermountain West, Sofia Koutzoukis May 2023

A Fine-Scale Understanding Of Sagebrush Islands To Improve Restoration Outcomes In The Intermountain West, Sofia Koutzoukis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the Intermountain West, rapid expansion of non-native grasses, primarily cheatgrass, has created a repeating cycle where cheatgrass easily ignites and after a fire, more cheatgrass establishes in the burned area, leading to more fire, and more cheatgrass. The primary method to prevent further fires is to plant grass and shrub seeds after a fire because they can deter cheatgrass from establishing and reduce the chance of fire. However, this approach does not always work. There is a need and interest in alternative ways to establish native grasses and forbs.

Sagebrush, the dominant shrub of lower-elevation regions of the Intermountain …

A Classification Of Tensors In Ecsk Theory, Joshua James Leiter May 2023

A Classification Of Tensors In Ecsk Theory, Joshua James Leiter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

You might have heard of Einstein’s theory of General relativity (GR): it is the one where mass and energy curve the fabric of spacetime to create gravity. This is the major theory which allows communication through satellites and our GPS to work too! Wormholes have interested me, but there are some issues about forming them in GR. Interestingly enough, elementary particles are also characterized by their spin in the standard model. However, intrinsic spin is nowhere geometrically coupled to the geometry of spacetime in Einstein’s theory. Later, Élie Cartan, Dennis Sciama, and Tom Kibble all flushed out adding different aspects …
