Antoni Gaudí: Nature & Geometry, Sana Ashfaq Fatimah

2023 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Antoni Gaudí believed that architecture is the fusion of nature and geometry. He had the power to unite form and structure and he continued to achieve this in his work which made it hold a special place in the history of Barcelona’s architecture. He is known for his work to have changed the way architecture was approached. Although many hated his work at first, it was after his death that they realized how he has the power to unite nature and geometry. To further understand his legacy, a collection, and analysis of books, journals, and scholarly material was undertaken. The …

The International Relations Gender Gap, Meghna Sharda May 2023

The International Relations Gender Gap, Meghna Sharda

2023 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Like many other fields, there is a gender gap within the discipline of International Relations (IR). In this gap, female scholars are not as recognized as male scholars for their work and are pushed to pursue specific areas of study compared to male scholars. This thesis argues that the marginalization of women in the IR discipline has consequences for the types of research questions that dominate the field. To demonstrate this, this study analyzes journal articles in seven of the most prominent disciplinary journals (International Studies Quarterly, International Organization, European Journal of International Relations, Foreign Policy Analysis, Journal of Conflict …

Spelunking Through A Forest Of Roots: Solutions Of Polynomials In Different Number Systems, Nathan Easley May 2023

Spelunking Through A Forest Of Roots: Solutions Of Polynomials In Different Number Systems, Nathan Easley

2023 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Most advanced college students are familiar with the fact that an equation p(x) = 0, where p(x) is a polynomial of degree n with real coefficients, will have at most n solutions. When the coefficients are complex, the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra (FTA) says that there are exactly n solutions, counting multiplicity. For example, x^3 - x = 0 has exactly three solutions, 0, 1, and -1. This thesis investigates how many solutions polynomial equations have in other number systems, particularly in hyperbolic and parabolic numbers. Our methods involve looking for how many solutions simple equations, such as x^2 - …

Batson V. Kentucky Guidelines And The Use Of Peremptory Challenges In Arkansas Courts: A Case Study, Abigail Lindsey May 2023

Batson V. Kentucky Guidelines And The Use Of Peremptory Challenges In Arkansas Courts: A Case Study, Abigail Lindsey

Political Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

The peremptory challenge is a method by which attorneys can strike a potential juror from the jury pool without a valid reason. With Batson v. Kentucky (1986), the Supreme Court ruled that peremptory challenges cannot be issued on the basis of race, however, there are many problems with the way this precedent has been followed in various states. The goal of this research is to analyze how Arkansas courts implement the Batson precedent. This research also studies whether the way in which Arkansas courts utilize the peremptory challenge creates ideologically imbalanced juries.

Winter Cover Crop Performance In The Southern Piedmont Region Of South Carolina, Payton Davis May 2023

Winter Cover Crop Performance In The Southern Piedmont Region Of South Carolina, Payton Davis

All Theses

Cover crops (CC) offer in-field and environmental benefits when integrated into cropping systems. Low CC adoption in the southern Piedmont of South Carolina is partially due to the lack of information on CC performance and benefits within the region. To address this, eight winter CC and a fallow/pigweed treatment were investigated for their influence on soil temperature, volumetric water content (VWC), percent cover, biomass, and the occurrence of soil water repellency (SWR). A randomized complete block design experiment was conducted in the fall and winter of 2021-2022 (EXP A) and repeated in 2022-2023 (EXP B). Cover crops minimally influenced soil …

Hibernating Tricolored Bats At A Southeastern Recreation Site: Microsite Use And Public Perceptions, Rebecca Brown May 2023

Hibernating Tricolored Bats At A Southeastern Recreation Site: Microsite Use And Public Perceptions, Rebecca Brown

All Theses

High bat mortality from white-nose syndrome (WNS) has increased the need to manage hibernation sites. Management decisions should be based on science, and when sites are accessible to the public, also need to consider human dimensions. We used Stumphouse Tunnel, a recreation site and tricolored bat (Perimyotis subflavus) hibernaculum in northwestern South Carolina, as a case study to understand potential conflicts between conservation and recreation. The population declined by 90% after the arrival of white-nose syndrome (WNS), followed by stabilization and slight increases. Because the increase was associated with more bats roosting in the publicly accessible section, a potential …

Comparing The Economic Efficiency Of Payment Structures To Subsidize On-Farm Greenhouse Gas Abatement In Iowa, David Mansfield May 2023

Comparing The Economic Efficiency Of Payment Structures To Subsidize On-Farm Greenhouse Gas Abatement In Iowa, David Mansfield

All Theses

Abating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the agricultural sector can help
combat climate change and meet the goals of the 2015 Paris Climate Agree-
ment. The agricultural sector can sequester soil organic carbon and, by adopt-
ing conservation-driven land-use decisions, such as reducing or stopping tillage,
increase carbon storage in soil and reduce nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions.
This thesis will compare the cost of achieving different levels of GHG emis-
sions reduction through payments based on: 1) region averages for GHG emis-
sions by crop and practice, without considering additionality, 2) region averages
for GHG emissions by crop and practice …

Laser Stabilization Through Optical Turbulence, Liam Vanderschaaf May 2023

Laser Stabilization Through Optical Turbulence, Liam Vanderschaaf

All Theses

Laser jitter presents a significant issue in the fields of laser communication and sensing. There are two main categories of positional noise in regards to the instantaneous centroid of a laser propagating over long distances: jitter resulting from optical turbulence and jitter resulting from mechanical vibrations. Optical turbulence was generated using Clemson University’s Variable Turbulence Generator (VTG). The VTG is capable of creating a desired level of optical turbulence that is comparable to atmospheric conditions with fried parameters greater than 0.3 cm. A gaussian laser was transmitted through the VTG and a system of Fast Steering Mirrors and Position Sensing …

Using Visual Effects As A Means Of Establishing Or Reinforcing Scale In 3d Visual Works, Eric Dinicolantonio May 2023

Using Visual Effects As A Means Of Establishing Or Reinforcing Scale In 3d Visual Works, Eric Dinicolantonio

All Theses

In 3D animation, visual effects help to establish and reinforce the scale of different characters and objects that are otherwise unclear. In the Fall of 2022, I taught a class about visual effects to several students. At the time, I had difficulty explaining the importance of properly scaling your 3D effects in order to add realism. With physically based effects, we must respect the laws of physics to create a visually realistic and understandable visual effect. Going through several of my previous projects, I found that I had made mistakes with scaling several of my effects. With this paper, I …

A Hidden Spider Web Of Roots: Utilizing Ground Penetrating Radar To Uncover Laterally Expansive Roots Of An Oak Tree, Megan Lapkoff May 2023

A Hidden Spider Web Of Roots: Utilizing Ground Penetrating Radar To Uncover Laterally Expansive Roots Of An Oak Tree, Megan Lapkoff

All Theses

Roots are critical to understanding tree health, subsurface biomass, and overall tree root stability. However, accessing tree roots is difficult and traditional methods used to quantify roots harm or kill the tree. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) provides a non-invasive way to characterize subsurface roots without harming the tree. GPR provides high-resolution data and the ability to collect data with high spatial coverage, making it an ideal tool for characterizing roots. GPR works by detecting contrasts in dielectric permittivity or electromagnetic (EM) velocity at interfaces between materials. Small scattering objects, like roots, generate predictable artifacts called diffraction hyperbolas. Diffraction hyperbolas will …

Perspective And Perception: How Reddit Trip Reports Convey And Offer Different Knowledges About Psychedelic Drugs, Kevin Lawson Nutt May 2023

Perspective And Perception: How Reddit Trip Reports Convey And Offer Different Knowledges About Psychedelic Drugs, Kevin Lawson Nutt

All Theses

Psychedelics drugs are slowly gaining recognition for their potential medicinal value in therapeutic settings in Western science. However, there remains a great deal of hostility and hesitancy toward psychedelics, largely due to the psychedelics’ collective classification as Schedule I drugs in America, which resulted from a history of the drug class’ demonization. Nonetheless, several US states and cities having decriminalized psychedelic drugs in certain contexts, but the general population is relatively naïve to the potentialities psychedelics can offer. This thesis studies trip reports, which are firsthand accounts of individual psychedelic experiences, on Reddit to shed light on the different knowledges …

Evaluating The Effect Of Palmitic Acid Concentration On Growth And Inhibition Of Syntrophomonas Sp., Clancy Kerr

All Theses

Various industries produce fats, oils, and greases (FOG). These hydrophobic compounds cause issues in municipal wastewater collection and treatment systems. Anaerobic co-digestion is an effective way to treat FOG and presents an opportunity to produce more significant quantities of biogas. However, many microorganisms are sensitive to the degradation products like long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs). Palmitic acid is the most prevalent LCFA in anaerobic co-digestion of FOG and wastewater. Sytrophomonas is a β-oxidizer able to break down palmitic acid. Palmitic acid is known to feed and inhibit Syntrophomonas growth and methanogenesis. The objectives of this investigation are: To determine if Syntrophomonas …

Use Of Smartphone Apps While Driving: Variations On Driving Performances, Perceived Risks And Behaviors, Juana Perez May 2023

Use Of Smartphone Apps While Driving: Variations On Driving Performances, Perceived Risks And Behaviors, Juana Perez

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

ABSTRACT: Distracted driving increases the crash frequencies on the road and subsequently leads to fatalities involved with crashes. As technology has evolved, drivers are continuously exposed to newer technology in their vehicles and applications in their phones, which has led to technology representing one of the main secondary tasks that distract drivers on the road. The impact of technology-involved distraction appears to be different by the type of distraction since a secondary task that can be exceedingly distracting to the driver causes more reckless and risky driving. Moreover, the impact of distracted driving may differ by roadway geometries since distracted …

Phenomenological Qualitative Program Evaluation Of Goat Yoga For Cultivating Joy And Positively Shifting Perspective, Teri Relyea Berbel

Social Work Theses - Archive

There is increasing evidence that animal-assisted interventions are helpful for mental wellbeing in reducing anxiety and depression. There is also a large body of research supporting the benefits of yoga for symptoms of trauma. However, there can be resistance to participating in yoga interventions because of insecurity or personal aversions to the practice. Also, yoga alone may not provide sufficient positive affect attributes to promote the needed change. The combined yoga and animal-assisted intervention of “Goat Yoga” has been popular for several years as a fun and uplifting activity but has not been studied for its influence on mental wellbeing. …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

ABSTRACT: Arc-jet flows are the only ground-test facilities that can recreate hypersonic high-enthalpy flight conditions for long durations. Characterizing these complex flow regimes, generally under thermo-chemical non-equilibrium, is crucial to establishing a relationship between the ground-test environment and flight conditions. This work presents the development of two innovative and world’s first successful application of advanced non-intrusive laser-based diagnostic techniques for characterizing the 1.6 MW ONR-UTA Arc-Heated Wind Tunnel, Leste’s plasma flow. The arc-jet flow represents a unique challenge for the application of laser-based diagnostics due to the highly emitting background across a wide spectral range. Femtosecond Laser Electronic Excitation Tagging …

Novel Roles Of Standard And Non-Standard Null Lagrangians In Classical And Quantum Physics, Lesley Catherine Vestal May 2023

Novel Roles Of Standard And Non-Standard Null Lagrangians In Classical And Quantum Physics, Lesley Catherine Vestal

Physics Dissertations - Archive

The three known families of Lagrangians are standard, non-standard, and null Lagrangians. While Lagrangians are widely used in Physics for their ability to characterize physical systems, most of this work uses only standard Lagrangians. As such, standard Lagrangians have been studied in Physics for around three hundred years; however, non-standard Lagrangians for systems in Physics have been considered only for a few decades, and null have been ignored almost entirely. Although only some Lagrangians are null Lagrangians, all Lagrangians can be categorized as either standard or non-standard Lagrangians, meaning that there exist standard null Lagrangians and non-standard null Lagrangians. My …

Model And Observation Comparisons Of Ionospheric Current Systems, Tre'shunda James May 2023

Model And Observation Comparisons Of Ionospheric Current Systems, Tre'shunda James

Physics Dissertations - Archive

The interaction between the dynamically changing solar wind and Earth’s magnetosphere results in several different current systems. The most relevant to space weather are the Birkeland currents, a.k.a field-aligned currents (FACs), that couple the magnetosphere to the ionosphere. These currents flow into and out of the ionosphere and are closed through the ionosphere by the horizontally flowing eastward and westward electrojets. This FAC-electrojet current system is responsible for some of the most beautiful and detrimental space weather impacts. The aurora borealis (or northern lights) in the Northern Hemisphere and aurora australis (or southern lights) in the Southern Hemisphere are displays …

Exploring Numerical Simulations Of Localized Geomagnetic Disturbances, Elizabeth Vandegriff May 2023

Exploring Numerical Simulations Of Localized Geomagnetic Disturbances, Elizabeth Vandegriff

Physics Dissertations - Archive

One of the prominent effects of space weather is the formation of rapid geomagnetic field variations on Earth’s surface driven by the magnetosphere-ionosphere system. These Geomagnetic Disturbances (GMDs) cause Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) to run through ground-conducting systems. GMDs can often be high amplitude and small-scale (100-500 kilometers) and we classify these as Localized GMDs (LGMDs). LGMDs are both hazardous to the power grid and difficult to predict. Modeling LGMDs is therefore a critical step for risk mitigation but is complicated due to the dynamic and sometimes highly localized nature of the phenomena. At present, global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models of …

The Metaphorical Inevitability Of Death As Seen In Three Settings Of Goethe's Der Erlkönig, Eric Wood May 2023

The Metaphorical Inevitability Of Death As Seen In Three Settings Of Goethe's Der Erlkönig, Eric Wood

Music Theses - Archive

Goethe’s Der Erlkönig, published in 1791, laid the foundation for many musical settings of its text. The three that will be discussed in this thesis are by Franz Schubert (1815), Carl Loewe (1824), and Emilie Mayer (1870). Each of these three settings evokes the metaphorical concept of inevitability. In Mayer’s setting, the harp-like accompaniment pattern that follows the Erlking suggests a calm presence, but the text shows the Erlking’s true nature. Loewe’s setting is entirely in G (major and minor), which I interpret as two sides of the same coin– the positive false reality that the Erlking provides and the …

Developing Chemo-Proteomics Methods For Tyrosine Conjugation And Studies Of Organometallic Complexes Of Gold., Adway Ouseph Zacharias

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

The incredible changes in MS instrumentation since the late 1980s with the advent of electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) has revolutionized protein chemistry. Mass spectrometry coupled with chemical crosslinking is a powerful tool to decipher protein structure and protein-protein interactions. A majority of commercially available crosslinkers target only few amino acid residues such as lysine, arginine and cysteine, thereby limiting the utility of this technology. The prospect of using chemical reagents to target amino acids is challenging since covalent labeling experiments are performed under physiological aqueous conditions that may be detrimental to the stability of these reagents. …

Formal Processes For Inspecting Bridge Deck Drains Using Lidar And Photogrammetry, Ahmad Kamal Bani Hani May 2023

Formal Processes For Inspecting Bridge Deck Drains Using Lidar And Photogrammetry, Ahmad Kamal Bani Hani

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

ABSTRACT: Poor-performing bridge deck drains result in water standing on the bridge deck. The standing water threatens the safety of bridge users and deteriorates bridge structural elements. Bridge deck drains are only inspected biennially, and they do not impact the bridge rating established from inspections. Furthermore, literature shows that visual inspection results are sometimes skewed due to human errors. In this regard, a part of this research was conducting a survey study to help identify the problems with deck drains to help transportation agencies minimize the consequences of poor drainage. Another part of this research was to create a convolutional …

Physiological Analyses Of Broadband Near-Infrared Spectroscopy And Electrophysiological Measurements In Vivo For Biomedical Applications, Haylea Renguul

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

My thesis concerns analysis of data from optical and electrophysiological measurement tools for calculate potential biomarkers in three biomedical applications: (1) the gastrointestinal immaturity of infants of different ages, (2) prefrontal connectivity in healthy older adults, and (3) hemodynamic-metabolic coherence during vascular occlusion. The first application relied on electrogastrogram (EGG) measurements taken on 81 newborns in a neonatal intensive care unit. Of the 81 babies, 77 were born prematurely. By separating these babies into different gestational age groups and analyzing their EGG data, I was able to find population differences in common EGG analysis parameters. In particular, we found that …

Evolution Of Allostery And Conformational Dynamics Of Caspases Involved In The Extrinsic Pathway Of Apoptosis, Mithun Nag Karadi Giridhar May 2023

Evolution Of Allostery And Conformational Dynamics Of Caspases Involved In The Extrinsic Pathway Of Apoptosis, Mithun Nag Karadi Giridhar

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Caspases are a class of cysteine proteases that play a crucial role in programmed cell death (apoptosis). We complete an evolutionary picture of folding of caspases in the extrinsic pathway of apoptosis. The folding models show that the conformational free energy of the monomeric fold is conserved in the extrinsic pathway of apoptosis. In addition, with molecular dynamics and mass spectrometry we also show that the small subunit is less stable than the large subunit and charges destabilize allosteric regions in caspases allowing for dynamics. In order to gain insight into the evolution of allostery in caspases across different species, …

Endophytic Bacteria Isolated From Aeschynomene Indica Plants And Their Role In Nod-Factor Independent Nodule Formation And Nitrogen Fixation, Meaghan Alyssa Rose

Biology Dissertations - Archive

The formation of specialized root organs known as nodules is the most defining characteristic of leguminous plants due to the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen to bioavailable forms enabled by rhizobial endosymbionts. This relationship has played an integral role in the agricultural practice of using such crop plants as biofertilizers to reduce the use of and dependency on synthetic chemical fertilizers. Tropical legumes, such as members of the genus Aeschynomene, are particularly recognized for their ability to form stem nodules through an unknown mechanism independently of the canonical Nod Factor signaling pathway used in standard root nodulation. The works in this …

Cell Division In Mycobacteria: The Role Of Sepiva, Angela H. Freeman May 2023

Cell Division In Mycobacteria: The Role Of Sepiva, Angela H. Freeman

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Today, about a quarter of the world’s population are infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and therefore, are at risk of developing tuberculosis (TB) disease. Tuberculosis, on average, takes about six months to treat, and even longer for those with drug resistant Mtb infections (World Health Organization, 2022). Extended treatment times for these infections are caused by the inherent tolerance to antibiotics conveyed by mycobacteria’s distinct cell wall. Mycobacteria have a wide variety of cell wall regulators that help the cell adapt to stress, such as antibiotics. By understanding how these regulators work, we can learn how mycobacteria evade killing by …
