Ionospheric Neutral Mass Spectroscopy, Austin Matheus Smith May 2023

Ionospheric Neutral Mass Spectroscopy, Austin Matheus Smith

Honors College Theses

Understanding neutral masses in the ionosphere, especially in the E- and D-regions, is a very challenging endeavor. This is due to the high density of neutral masses at this height and the speed at which sounding rockets travel. These factors limit the ability to understand the quantity and quality of neutral masses in these regions; the density of these masses and the percentage of different masses present is not well resolved. Therefore, there exists a need to further investigate neutral mass in the ionosphere, and this research aims at presenting a possible instrument for doing so. We conducted experiments to …

Explaining The Disclosure Of Risky Secrets: A Test Of Two Models, Stephen M. Yoshimura, Annie Hickock, Haley Powell, Bryn Sokoloski, Brenna Spurling

Communication Studies Student Scholarship

The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that perceived partner responsiveness is a parsimonious theoretical predictor of secret disclosure in romantic relationships, and to compare the efficacy of the perceived partner responsiveness model against the revelation risk model. Using an online questionnaire, 95 respondents in an ongoing committed romantic relationship reported on a secret they had been keeping, responded to measures of the revelation risk model predictors and of perceived partner responsiveness, and indicated whether or not they have revealed the secret to a relationship partner. The results show that the revelation risk model was a better …

Cyclic And Linear Peptides Containing Tryptophan And Arginine Residues As Cell-Penetrating Peptides And Antifungal Agents, Khushbu Bhakta May 2023

Cyclic And Linear Peptides Containing Tryptophan And Arginine Residues As Cell-Penetrating Peptides And Antifungal Agents, Khushbu Bhakta

Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses

Here, we synthesized a novel group of linear and cyclic amphiphilic peptides containing different sequences of arginine (R) and tryptophan (W) residues. The peptides included a class of cyclic peptides, [R3W3]2, [R3WRW]2, [RWW]4, [WRR]4, [RWRW3]2, and the corresponding linear peptides, (R3WRW)2, (RWW)4, (WRR)4, (RWRW3)2. The peptides were examined as potential molecular transporters and cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs), and their efficiency in delivering cell-impermeable compounds was compared with [WR]5. The peptides showed no significant cytotoxicity in different cell lines (MDA-MB-231, SK-OV-3, and HEK-293) at a concentration of 1 µM and after 3 h of incubation time. The uptake of fluorescence-labeled cargo molecules …

Dopamine Injections To The Midbrain Periaqueductal Gray Inhibit Vocal-Motor Production In A Teleost Fish, Alexander Allen, Elizabeth Heisler, James Matthew Kittelberger May 2023

Dopamine Injections To The Midbrain Periaqueductal Gray Inhibit Vocal-Motor Production In A Teleost Fish, Alexander Allen, Elizabeth Heisler, James Matthew Kittelberger

Biology Faculty Publications

Across vertebrates, the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) plays a critical role in social and vocal behavior. Dopaminergic neurotransmission also modulates these behaviors, and dopaminergic innervation of the PAG has been well documented. Nonetheless, the potential role of dopamine in shaping vocal production at the level of the PAG is not well understood. Here, we tested the hypothesis that dopamine modulates vocal production in the PAG, using a well-characterized vertebrate model system for the study of vocal communication, the plainfin midshipman fish, Porichthys notatus. We found that focal dopamine injections to the midshipman PAG rapidly and reversibly inhibited vocal production …

Analysis On High Mass X-Ray Binary Spectral Shape Dependence On Luminosity For Ngc3310, Izabela Pavel May 2023

Analysis On High Mass X-Ray Binary Spectral Shape Dependence On Luminosity For Ngc3310, Izabela Pavel

Physics Undergraduate Honors Theses

In most normal galaxies, the most X-ray luminous sources are high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), which are binary star systems that contain compact objects (black holes or neutron stars) accreting from massive (> 8M⊙) companion stars. These HMXBs are thought to have been important sources of ionizing emission within star-forming galaxies that may have contributed to the heating of the intergalatic medium (gas over large cosmic scales) in the early Universe. When studying how HMXBs contribute to interstellar medium feedback, a single spectral shape of an absorbed power-law is typically assumed to be universal. The goal of this thesis is to …

Automating The Determination Of Tight-Binding Representations For Two-Dimensional Ferroelectrics, Joseph Roll May 2023

Automating The Determination Of Tight-Binding Representations For Two-Dimensional Ferroelectrics, Joseph Roll

Physics Undergraduate Honors Theses

Two-dimensional (atomically thin) materials have been greatly explored in the last two decades since the exfoliation of graphene in 2004. Since then, many exotic material properties have been shown for these systems; these new properties often arise from certain crystal symmetries or lack thereof. One of interest is ferroelectricity in which a noncentrosymmetric crystal structure can lead to a switchable intrinsic electric dipole in our material. This can then lead to second-harmonic generation in which two photons enter a material at a given frequency and one photon exits the material at double the original frequency. The study presented here makes …

A Review Of The Neural Basis Underlying The Acoustic Startle Response With A Focus On Recent Developments In Mammals, Alice Zheng, Susanne Schmid May 2023

A Review Of The Neural Basis Underlying The Acoustic Startle Response With A Focus On Recent Developments In Mammals, Alice Zheng, Susanne Schmid

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

The startle response consists of whole-body muscle contractions, eye-blink, accelerated heart rate, and freezing in response to a strong, sudden stimulus. It is evolutionarily preserved and can be observed in any animal that can perceive sensory signals, indicating the important protective function of startle. Startle response measurements and its alterations have become a valuable tool for exploring sensorimotor processes and sensory gating, especially in the context of pathologies of psychiatric disorders. The last reviews on the neural substrates underlying acoustic startle were published around 20 years ago. Advancements in methods and techniques have since allowed new insights into acoustic startle …

Glutamatergic dysfunction is implicated in schizophrenia pathoaetiology, but this may vary in extent between patients. It is unclear whether inter-individual variability in glutamate is greater in schizophrenia than the general population. We conducted meta-analyses to assess (1) variability of glutamate measures in patients relative to controls (log coefficient of variation ratio: CVR); (2) standardised mean differences (SMD) using Hedges g; (3) modal distribution of individual-level glutamate data (Hartigan's unimodality dip test). MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched from inception to September 2022 for proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) studies reporting glutamate, glutamine or Glx in schizophrenia. 123 studies reporting on …

Examining Ndufab1 Expression In Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Addison Stevens

Poster Presentations

Honors research poster.

Introduction: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is approximately 4% of all cancers and 2% of all cancer associated mortality in the United States. In 2023, there will be an estimated 67,000 new cases of HNSCC, along with 15,400 deaths, in the United States. HNSCC locations include the oral cavity, oropharynx, nasopharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx. Major risk factors for HNSCC include tobacco use, alcohol use, and human papilloma virus (HPV). Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is currently the only approved molecular targeted therapy for HNSCC. Therefore, new therapeutics and biomarkers for HNSCC are warranted. Mitochondria are …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

IMPORTANCE: Extremely preterm infants who develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) are at a higher risk for adverse pulmonary and neurodevelopmental outcomes. In the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network (NICHD NRN) Hydrocortisone Trial, hydrocortisone neither reduced rates of BPD or death nor increased rates of neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) or death.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether estimated risk for grades 2 to 3 BPD or death is associated with the effect of hydrocortisone on the composite outcomes of (1) grades 2 to 3 BPD or death and (2) moderate or severe NDI or death.

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

IMPORTANCE: Meta-analyses suggest that corticosteroids may be associated with increased survival without cerebral palsy in infants at high risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) but are associated with adverse neurologic outcomes in low-risk infants. Whether this association exists in contemporary practice is uncertain because most randomized clinical trials administered corticosteroids earlier and at higher doses than currently recommended.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the pretreatment risk of death or grade 2 or 3 BPD at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age modified the association between postnatal corticosteroid therapy and death or disability at 2 years' corrected age in extremely preterm infants.
