"The Arc Of The Moral Universe": Christian Eschatology And U.S. Constitutionalism, Nathan S. Chapman May 2023

"The Arc Of The Moral Universe": Christian Eschatology And U.S. Constitutionalism, Nathan S. Chapman

Notre Dame Law Review

This Essay first attempts to understand how a contested Christian doctrine found its way into constitutional law. It does so through a reverse genealogy of ideas—an archaeology, perhaps. The Essay begins by sketching how U.S. constitutionalism, in both theory and doctrine, reflects the belief that the “arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” It then suggests that underlying this constitutional theme is a merger of two features of American civil religion: the tradition of treating the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution as the central texts of a sacred canon and the belief that America …

Creating Student Leaders: Strategies For Midwest College, Ryan Hollibaugh May 2023

Creating Student Leaders: Strategies For Midwest College, Ryan Hollibaugh

Leadership Education Capstones

The need to build effective work teams and leaders is crucial to the success of a work team. This becomes difficult in a college setting when a manager employs college students. Employing college students means every year managers are losing senior classes and replacing graduates with new workers. This results in teams losing the most experienced workers and oftentimes team leaders. To counteract this, managers are constantly having to find new leaders on a yearly basis and also continue to develop leaders. This is a challenging task and results in transition periods while new employees and the new leader are …

Little Rock’S Unique Political Opportunities For Black Arkansans, 1865-1905, Isaac J. Cross May 2023

Little Rock’S Unique Political Opportunities For Black Arkansans, 1865-1905, Isaac J. Cross

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

Little Rock, Arkansas offered unique political opportunities in the late nineteenth century. Unlike the rest of the state, Little Rock housed a prominent middle-class black community that earned political office positions in local and state government. The current historical scholarship on the state’s African American political power in these years lacks detailed treatment of the political power of black Arkansans in Little Rock. Using newspapers, census data, and local and state government documents, this thesis argues for the unique position of the state’s capital for black Arkansans. In the late nineteenth century, the black middle class was especially strong in …

Money Laundering In The Global Art Market, Arran Walton May 2023

Money Laundering In The Global Art Market, Arran Walton

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

It is no secret that money laundering has seeped into the art market for years, but veils of anonymity and lack of regulation have kept many of those who foster the illegal operations immune from justice. As criminal operations permeate the art market on a regular basis, what can be done? This thesis will approach this question through an examination of qualitative data and studies, including investigating applicable recent cases, to understand four unique vulnerabilities of the art market and how these weaknesses are exploited. Additionally, the major groups who use the art market as a means of money laundering …

The Effect Of Weight Bias On The Prevalence Of Cardiovascular Disease, Manuela Paki Amouzou May 2023

The Effect Of Weight Bias On The Prevalence Of Cardiovascular Disease, Manuela Paki Amouzou

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The condition of obesity has been recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a multi-faceted chronic disease. Previous studies have shown an associational relationship between recorded weight bias in healthcare providers, in society at large, andtowards oneself and negative health outcomes. In addition, the increased rate of recorded obesity is often tied to the increased incidence of cardiovascular disease in the population. Therefore, it is imperative to discuss the causes of this relationship and an updated course of treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how the attitudes and beliefs of healthcare providers towards people who are …

Nature And Nurture: How They Play A Role In Serial Killers And Their Victims (1970-1999), Sarah Mroczkowski May 2023

Nature And Nurture: How They Play A Role In Serial Killers And Their Victims (1970-1999), Sarah Mroczkowski

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Investigating the relationship between a serial killer’s nature (their biological makeup) and nurture (their learned behavior) is important due to the fact that any trauma they experienced as a child makes them more likely to offend as an adult. This study investigated how nature (e.g., biological brain damage and the MAOA gene) and nurture (e.g., their physical upbringing) affected serial killers, specifically the number of their victims, during the ‘serial killer era’ (1970 to 1999). All serial killers meeting our criteria were studied to determine to what extent they were abused as a child, the number of victims they had, …

Mind Over Matter: The Role Of Resilience, Crime Victimization, And Age At The Time Of Victimization On Psychological Health, Alana Compton

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between crime victimization, age at the time of victimization, psychological health, and resilience. Past research has shown that crime victimization has been linked to higher levels of depression and suicidal ideation, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders, and that those who experience a traumatic event as a child are influenced more negatively than those who experience trauma as an adult. Additionally, resilience has been shown to mediate the influence that trauma has on an individual. Undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty and staff were surveyed to determine their …

Sec Proposed Regulations On Climate Related Disclosures And Climate Related Risks, Paloma Alvarado May 2023

Sec Proposed Regulations On Climate Related Disclosures And Climate Related Risks, Paloma Alvarado

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Today many large corporations voluntarily produce climate-related disclosures with detailed breakdowns of their environmental impact from corporate activities. As consumers have become more concerned with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) requirements and government intervention has increased with environmental impacts, it is no surprise that companies have voluntarily moved to release these reports. Many of the voluntary reports have been longstanding. The authors of “How Green is the Apple?” (2020) author reports that between “2003 and 2018, Apple published 40 product environmental reports, and 24 appeared in 2018 alone that covered 8 product lines” (pg. 314). As another example, Ford published …

Prefrontal Activation During Inhibition Of A Balance Recovery Step, Ezinne Abugu May 2023

Prefrontal Activation During Inhibition Of A Balance Recovery Step, Ezinne Abugu

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The ability to quickly step is an important strategy to avoid a fall. However, real-world settings often constrain a stepping path. Such constraints necessitate response inhibition to prevent an inappropriate step and select a new course of action to ultimately recover balance. The present study investigated neural mechanisms that underlie this ability to stop a highly automatic balance recovery step. In the field of cognitive neuroscience, response inhibition has typically been researched using focal hand reaction tasks performed by seated participants. This approach combined with neuroimaging has revealed a neural stopping network, which includes the right Inferior Frontal Gyrus (right …

House Of Grief, Megan Eralie

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This collection of essays examines how I house the grief for the losses of my religion and my grandfather. My first essay, “Body of Feathers,” looks at my body as a house of shame and how I transformed my body into something that could be mine instead. It explores a series of moments from my life where I felt disconnected from my body, usually because of rules or expectations set by someone other than me. In the essay, I move from feeling like I had no control of my body, to taking back control and experiencing my body as mine …

Genetic Investigation Of Spontaneous Harlequin Coat Patterning In A Family Of Finnish Collies, Megan Patterson May 2023

Genetic Investigation Of Spontaneous Harlequin Coat Patterning In A Family Of Finnish Collies, Megan Patterson

Honors College Theses

The merle coat pattern is a pigmentary phenotype of dogs characterized by a dilute background with black patches. Merle is caused by a SINE insertion in PMEL17, a pigmentation gene expressed in melanocytes. The mutation causes aberrant splicing of transcripts and production of an abnormal protein. Harlequin is a dominant modifier of merle that further dilutes the background to white. Harlequin Great Danes have a heterozygous mutation impairing the ubiquitin-proteasome system, suggesting that the inability to degrade aberrant PMEL17 results in melanocyte death. Harlequin is not a recognized coat pattern of the Collie; however, a harlequin phenotype spontaneously appeared in …
