Effective Leadership Strategies For Character Education, Kim Fricke Bilanko Apr 2026

Effective Leadership Strategies For Character Education, Kim Fricke Bilanko

Dissertations

Although character education has been widely studied, limited research has examined the specific leadership strategies building administrators use to implement and sustain comprehensive character initiatives. This qualitative study investigated the leadership practices of building administrators whose schools were designated as National Schools of Character (NSOC) in order to better understand how character education is institutionalized and maintained over time. Guided by an exemplar model and informed by constructivist grounded theory methods, the qualitative study explored (a) the leadership strategies administrators identified as essential to implementation and (b) the challenges they encountered, and the responses used to address them.

A Qualitative Analysis Of Pediatricians' Perspectives Regarding Barriers, Facilitators, And Strategies For Providing Timely Autism Spectrum Disorder Screening And Diagnosis, Mallika Mathur, Jinni Tang, Christine Markham, Sandra Mckay, Ruosha Li, Deepali Ernest, Allison Marshall, Shreela Sharma

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that has increased in prevalence over the years. Diagnosis and subsequent intervention by the age of 3 is essential for development. However, recent estimates indicate that less than 50% of children receive an evaluation by age 3. Underserved populations are more likely to receive an evaluation at an older age. Several barriers in the diagnostic process have been identified; however, limited studies have aimed at understanding the specifics of these barriers among underserved populations and whether current strategies are beneficial for all children.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to …

Rethinking Dual-Task Training In Parkinson’S Disease: Engaging And Innovating For Inclusive Access To Rehabilitation, Nesibe Cakmak, Jennifer Freeman, Lisa Bunn, Camille Carroll Apr 2026

Rethinking Dual-Task Training In Parkinson’S Disease: Engaging And Innovating For Inclusive Access To Rehabilitation, Nesibe Cakmak, Jennifer Freeman, Lisa Bunn, Camille Carroll

School of Health Professions

Dual-task training helps improve balance and cognitive function in people with Parkinson’s disease, but existing clinician-led, clinic-based programmes lack standardization. This qualitative study aimed to inform new programme designs by exploring the experiences and needs of individuals with Parkinson’s disease, their supporters, and physiotherapists. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten participants–six with mild-to-moderate Parkinson’s disease, two supporters, and two physiotherapists. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and independently analysed by two researchers using framework analysis. Three main themes emerged: what comprises “An Engaging Dual-task Training,” emphasizing enjoyment, daily life integration, and the need for a balance between challenge and reward as well …

A Place To Breathe: High School Students’ Perceptions Of A School-Based Wellness Center, Devan Clayton, Elizabeth Cutrer, Paul Caldarella, Michael Richardson, Jared Warren Apr 2026

A Place To Breathe: High School Students’ Perceptions Of A School-Based Wellness Center, Devan Clayton, Elizabeth Cutrer, Paul Caldarella, Michael Richardson, Jared Warren

Faculty Publications

Adolescents face significant academic and emotional stressors, underscoring the need for accessible school-based mental health support. This qualitative study examined high school students’ (N = 17) perceptions of a school-based wellness center, including both users and non-users. Four focus groups were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to explore experiences, perceived benefits, and barriers to use. Students described the center as a calming, supportive space that aided emotional regulation, short-term recovery, and readiness to return to class. Users emphasized relational connection, belonging, and managing stress and anxiety in a safe, nonjudgmental environment. Students also viewed the center as fostering early …

The Experiences Of Systemic Invalidation In Chronic Pain Care Among Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Individuals: An Interpretative Phenomenological Study, Claira Moro, Stuart Spicer, Charley Hobson-Merrett

Peninsula Medical School

This study explored the lived experiences of individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities living with chronic pain and prescribed pain-relief medication. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, eight participants were recruited from a single primary care network in England. Two Group Experiential Themes were developed. This paper reports one: From Dismissed to Disengaged: the trauma of seeking help, with three sub-themes: (1) “Being fobbed off” – dismissal across healthcare and benefit systems; (2) “It just seemed horrible to me, to take it off me” – pain relief as withdrawn, stigmatised, or conditional; and (3) “Do I want to poke the bear?” – disengagement …

Mitochondrial Presequences Harbor Variable Strengths To Maintain Organellar Function, Youmian Yan, Baigalmaa Erdenepurev, Thiago N Menezes, Ian Collinson, Natalie M Niemi Apr 2026

Mitochondrial Presequences Harbor Variable Strengths To Maintain Organellar Function, Youmian Yan, Baigalmaa Erdenepurev, Thiago N Menezes, Ian Collinson, Natalie M Niemi

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Hundreds of mitochondrial proteins rely on N-terminal presequences for organellar targeting and import. While generally described as positively charged amphiphilic helices, presequences lack a consensus motif and thus likely promote protein import into mitochondria with variable efficiencies. Indeed, the concept of presequence strength underlies biological models such as stress sensing, yet a quantitative analysis of what dictates strong versus weak presequences is lacking. Furthermore, the extent to which presequence strength affects mitochondrial function and cellular fitness remains unclear. Here, we capitalize on the MitoLuc protein import assay to define multiple aspects of presequence strength. We find that select presequences, including …

Visualizing Perception: Systems Of Perception And Cognition In Animal Species, Felicia Soto Apr 2026

Visualizing Perception: Systems Of Perception And Cognition In Animal Species, Felicia Soto

Theses

Animal species utilize various modes of perception based on their individual adaptations and survival needs. The sensory organs of an organism serve as an interface between the present environment and the organism’s central nervous system (Dangles et. al, 2009). An organism will make decisions based on the information being perceived and processed by that individual's nervous system. Studies investigate the mechanisms of these interactions in a variety of ways, from studying physiology and functional morphology, to conducting observational studies of perception. These studies concerning perception and cognition in animals can help to uncover parallels between animal species, as well as …
