Beyond Participation: Hélio Oiticica And Neville D’Almeida, Jocelyn Elliott Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
The collaborative works by Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica and filmmaker Neville D’Almeida responded to Brazil’s dictatorship and their self-imposed exile in New York between 1969-1974. Oiticica’s concept of crelazer and the artists elective “marginal” position converge to create a new cinematic language; challenging gender norms, and proposing new systems for living.
Stock Splits And Corporate Peer Effects, Albert J. Saad
Stock Splits And Corporate Peer Effects, Albert J. Saad
Theses and Dissertations
We find that a company’s decision to execute a stock split is affected by the number of stock splits carried out by its peers. Through the use of a broad peer group construction methodology, we also reveal the presence of asymmetric effects with regard to companies of different market capitalization size. In the periods of 1983–1996 and 1997–2009 we find that firms are more likely to split their stock if more of their peers have recently done so. However, in the period of 2010–2019 we see that the opposite is true. These results provide further evidence on social learning from …

Leonora Carrington’S "Down Below": Transgressive Renderings Of The Grotesque Female Body, Kelsey King
Theses and Dissertations
The classification of the bodily grotesque relies on the transgression of boundaries, marked by an openness to the world. Leonora Carrington’s memoir (1944) and painting (1940) that share the same name, Down Below, illustrate the grotesque body as a revisionist self-configuration, destabilizing traditional representations and eroticization of the female form.
The Effects Of Lower Speed Limits On Fatalities And Serious Injuries, Naufa Nuha
The Effects Of Lower Speed Limits On Fatalities And Serious Injuries, Naufa Nuha
Theses and Dissertations
Responding to concerns about road safety, New York City passed a law called Vision Zero in 2014 that progressively decreased all local road speed limits to 25 miles per hour. This was in an effort to increase road safety from collisions. Starting a year prior to Vision Zero, the city started lowering speed limits in certain high-risk roads. I use data on accidents from New York City Open Data to examine the effect of reducing speed limits in Manhattan. The analysis exploits the implementation of lower speed limits on some roads prior to 2014 that provides a quasi-experimental design. Estimates …

The Relationship Between The National Family Caregiver Support Program (Nfcsp) And Help Received By The Elder Population, Symone Biggerstaff
Theses and Dissertations
The rising elder American population is causing an increased demand for elder support. Elder support often comes from informal caregivers. There are economic implications of elder care, such as increased government funding for elder care facilities and economic strain on caregivers and care recipients. The National Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) was the first federal program, implemented in 2000 under the Older Americans Act re-authorization, designed to unburden caregivers. This paper aims to analyze the connection between NFCSP eligibility and the aid provided to elderly care recipients with ADL and IADL challenges. Using Health and Retirement Study (HRS) data and a …

Contrafreeloading In The Domestic Dog (Canis Lupus Familiaris), Liza Rothkoff
Theses and Dissertations
Contrafreeloading is the behavior of working for food that requires effort to obtain when also provided with food that does not require effort to obtain. More specifically, contrafreeloading can be defined in multiple ways using various criterion such as 1) an animal’s preference and/or 2) an animal’s willingness to work for food when freely available food is offered. To date, multiple studies have evaluated contrafreeloading in various animal species, identifying that many non-domesticated species (e.g., maned wolves, red jungle fowl) and domesticated species (e.g., pigs, goats) demonstrate a preference and/or a willingness to work for food when readily available food …

This thesis examines Art Across the Park (1980 and 1982), a program of sculpture and performance conceived of by artist David Hammons sited throughout overlooked regions of New York City’s public parks. Amidst debates about the proper use of public space and the role of public art in the early 1980s, Art Across the Park asserted a more culturally expansive model of being in social space, one rooted in strategies of performance as an antidote to lasting effects of social control.

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
This volume describes the results of the IAA excavations at the Naḥal Tanninim Dam and the adjacent flour mills and water channels, conducted over 10 excavation seasons (2000–2005). This massive, sophisticated hydraulic facility was constructed in the early Byzantine period to convey water from the lower course of Naḥal Tanninim to the city of Caesarea Maritima to the south. To this end, the shared outlet of Naḥal Tanninim and Naḥal Ada through the coastal kurkar ridge was blocked by a massive gravity dam to create an immense reservoir, and a sluice diverted water to the Low-Level Aqueduct to Caesarea; the …

The Potential Of Polysemy In Video Games: A Case Study Of Elden Ring, Ryan Vanderhoof
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Researchers have defined polysemy as a concept used to describe a word that can carry multiple different meanings depending on the context in which it is being used. This concept has also been applied to media in the way that film producers employ it within trailers and teasers, letting viewers interpret what is to come, in order to drive excitement and anticipation. In this paper, I explore the potential for polysemy within video games by taking a look into the 2022 game of the year, Elden Ring because it employs several different endings, leaving people with different interpretations of its …
