Memoir Abstract

The John V. Kendall Memoir is a recollection of the Civil War era written in approximately 1902 that describes the experiences of a private in the Tenth Regiment Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. Throughout the memoir, Kendall discusses integral aspects of the life of a union soldier, such as drills, marches, and battlefield affairs. In addition, he intersperses his explanation of daily life with descriptions of key events surrounding the removal of the Sioux from Minnesota, and surrounding territories, with his own constant migration with the army. His specific attention to westward movements along the Mississippi River, as well marches …

Hospital industry workforce separation has remained a persistent concern in the United States, with uncertainty regarding how national hospital industry separation patterns changed following the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental retrospective study was to examine whether national hospital industry monthly separation rates differed between the prepandemic period (2018–2019) and the postpandemic period (2023–2024), whether separation rates demonstrated a statistically significant linear trend from 2018 through 2024, and whether separation rate variance differed between periods. This study explored teacher wellness among early-career elementary specialist teachers in rural Minnesota schools to address low retention among specialists. The research was guided by self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1987) and the job demands-resource model (Bakker & Demerouti, 2007), which together examined teacher wellness through understanding what motivates teachers and the role of demands and resources in their job, with relation to understanding teachers’ emotional, physical, and mental well-being and overall job satisfaction. A qualitative phenomenological approach was utilized, with data being collected through interviews with six participants. This thesis presents a comparative study of the Italian and the American healthcare systems, using Total Knee Replacements (TKRs) as a standardized metric to evaluate the health policy, financing, and patient outcomes. Despite the United States spending over $10,000 more per capita on healthcare than Italy, American life expectancy is 5 years shorter than Italian life expectancy. Through a mixed-methods analysis of data from the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR), the Programma Nazionale Esiti (PNE), the Registri Italiani di ArtoProtesi (RIAP), and the HCUPnet (AHRQ) database, this research identifies multiple disparities throughout the system. This thesis examines the Curious George series through Donna Haraway’s companion species framework in order to analyze how narratives of care, curiosity, and goodness structure human–animal relationships within the stories. Focusing on the first seven books written and illustrated by H. A. Rey and Margret Rey, as compiled in The Complete Adventures of Curious George (2001), the project uses close textual and visual analysis to examine how George’s curiosity repeatedly generates disruption that is managed through intervention, discipline, and forgiveness by human authority figures, particularly the man with the yellow hat. The pervasiveness of problems within K-12 education in the United States requires systemic change in order for education to be more equitable and keep students engaged in the classroom. Exclusionary disciplinary actions, while designed to deter misbehavior, in reality have very costly impacts. Pushing students out of classrooms in the wake of zero tolerance policies disproportionately punish minority students, create harsher consequences for problems that can be solved person-to-person, facilitates a growing adversity to schools, social ostracization, fuels the unignorable school-to-prison pipeline, hinders students’ academic achievement, and avoids the behavioral growth of conflict resolution. The ESD EOS [Elliott, Suresh, and Dohohue, IECR 1990, 29, 1476] is incorporated into the open-source Square Gradient Theory (SGT) library published by Mejia et al. [Mejia, Müller, and Chaparro-Maldonado, J. Chem. Inf. Model. 2021, 61, 1244]. The combined formalism is evaluated for accuracy compared to experimental measurements and empirical correlation methods. Earlier evaluations of the ESD EOS have shown it to provide accuracy like other EOSs for vapor pressure, vapor–liquid, liquid–liquid, and solid–liquid equilibria where the databases covered roughly 500 compounds and 100–200 mixtures each. This project focused on redesigning Decision-based Learning (DBL) training materials in Spanish to make them easier to understand and use for university educators. The materials were improved over several iterations based on feedback collected during workshops and open-ended surveys completed by educators and trainers. The feedback was organized into themes to identify common challenges.

The results showed that unclear instructions, long documents, navigation problems, and translation issues made it harder for educators to use the materials and feel confident using the DBL software. In response, the materials were revised to be shorter, more structured, and visually clearer. Additional resources were …

In order to better understand why people construct and perpetuate anti-COVID vaccine conspiracy theories, I perform a rhetorical analysis of some conspiracy theories widespread on social media during the height of the COVID vaccination effort. I begin with a literature review, highlighting the history and efficacy of vaccine technology, gathering characteristics and definitions of conspiracy theories, and reviewing the history of the anti-vaccine movement. In the mid-twentieth century, Gamal Abdel Nasser emerged as a powerful figure in Egypt and the rest of the Arab world, seeking to uplift the region in the era of decolonization. While contemporary scholars have analyzed Nasserism as a contradiction of itself, an ideology that originated as liberation but resulted in autocratic rule, less attention has been paid to instead break down what made Nasserism so appealing to his audience. This paper presents a vision-based framework for detecting humans and estimating head surface temperature from aerial thermal imagery acquired by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). A comparative evaluation of recent object detection architectures was conducted to identify the most stable and reliable model for thermal human detection under varying flight altitudes. The selected framework integrates two head localization strategies, namely, segmentation-based mask slicing and pose-assisted keypoint localization, to extract head regions and compute per-pixel temperature values from radiometric metadata. The results show that cross-domain inference using pre-trained YOLOv11 models achieves reliable human detection across controlled outdoor environments. Between the two pipelines, …

In March 2026, the Internal Revenue Service announced issued a notice of proposed rulemaking on the Trump Accounts Contribution Pilot Program and solicited comments on the proposed regulations. This testimony presents comments submitted in response to that call. The Watson Hamiltonian is a widely used model for describing anharmonic vibrational motion in polyatomic molecules. It expresses the kinetic energy in separable dimensionless normal coordinates and represents the potential energy as a Taylor series expansion around the equilibrium geometry, usually up to the quartic approximation. Several computational methods have been developed to solve the corresponding vibrational Schrödinger equation for predicting infrared (IR), Raman, and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra. These include the Vibrational Self-Consistent Field (VSCF) method, Vibrational Configuration Interaction (VCI) and its approximations, and Vibrational Second-Order Perturbation Theory (VPT2), each providing different balances between computational cost and accuracy. …
