Warming The Matrix: A Climate Assessment Under Uncertainty And Heterogeneity, Davide Bazzana, Massimiliano Rizzati, Emanuele Ciola, Enrico Maria Turco, Sergio Vergalli
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper explores the potential impacts of climate change and mitigation policies on the Euro Area, considering the uncertainty and heterogeneity in both climate and economic systems. Using the MATRIX model, a multi-sector and multi-agent macroeconomic model, we simulate various climate scenarios by employing different carbon cycle models, damage functions, and marginal abatement curves found in the literature. We find that heterogeneous climate damages amplify both the magnitude and the volatility of GDP losses associated with global warming. By the end of the century, we estimate that assuming homogeneous shocks may underestimate the effects of climate change on aggregate output …

Empowerment Agents: How Student Affairs Professionals Facilitate The Persistence Of Undocumented Students, Tiffany Paige
Dissertations
This qualitative study investigated how student affairs professionals (SAPs) assist undocumented students in their designated institutional roles, and how their support empowers undocumented students to persist. This research sought to document and assess how student affairs professionals—who interact with undocumented students— identify and respond to the issues they face in their work. Built on the theoretical frame of social capital, and using a thematic analysis design set forth by Braun and Clarke (2012), the researcher interviewed seven SAPs and used a phenomenological approach to design the study and to collect and analyze the data.
Two findings and five corresponding themes …
An Examination Of Organizational Influences On Coach Decision Making, Arien Elizabeth Faucett
An Examination Of Organizational Influences On Coach Decision Making, Arien Elizabeth Faucett
Dissertations
Sport coaching occurs in an ambiguous, complex, and dynamic environment bounded by rules, structures, and traditions unique to the context in which it occurs (ICCE et al., 2013; Jones & Wallace, 2005; Nash & Collins, 2006). Coaching is therefore not only pedagogical in nature but also features social and political elements (Abraham & Collins, 2011) focused on athlete development within a specific social and organizational context (ICCE et al., 2013). At the heart of this coaching practice is a constant process of decision-making (Abraham et al., 2006; Lyle & Vergeer, 2013; Vergeer & Lyle, 2009). However, research on the decision-making …
Social Media Usage And Self-Esteem: The Moderating Role Of Media Literacy, Comparison Tendency, And User Motivation, Feng Li
Dissertations
Studies on Facebook and Twitter have shown that social media usage negatively influences individuals’ self-esteem. Many scholars believe media literacy could help reduce this negative impact. Social comparison tendencies and user motivations may also influence this dynamic. The current study is designed to test the moderation effects of media literacy, comparison tendency, and user motivation influencing WeChat Moments usage on individuals’ self-esteem. A group of Chinese college students (N= 299) participated in an online survey. Results show no negative association between WeChat Moments usage and self-esteem. Media literacy only negatively moderates this effect among those who reported having 20-50 friends. …
Origin And Structure Of The First Sharp Diffraction Peak Of Amorphous Solids, Devilal Dahal
Origin And Structure Of The First Sharp Diffraction Peak Of Amorphous Solids, Devilal Dahal
Dissertations
Several explanations have been reported in the literature about the origin of extended-range oscillations (EROs) in the atomic pair-correlation function of amorphous materials. Although the radial ordering beyond the short-range order of about 5 Å has been extensively studied in amorphous materials, the exact nature of the radial ordering beyond a nanometer is still not resolved. This dissertation address this problem and explains the nature of the EROs by using high-quality models of amorphous silicon (a-Si) obtained from Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics simulations. The extended-range ordering in a-Si is examined through radial oscillations on the length …

"If These Walls Could Speak": Judson College And The Formation Of The New Baptist Woman, 1838-1930, E.Gabrielle Walker
Dissertations
Southern Baptist women’s collegiate education and experiences led to their questioning traditional Baptist gender roles and interpreting religion to fit a modern, progressive worldview. Judson College established in 1838 in Marion, Alabama, created a space for its Baptist students to consider socially appropriate ways, outside of doctrinal boundaries, to serve God, themselves, their families, and humanity. Judson remained theologically and culturally conservative, perpetuating inherited religious and social notions of female subordination to men, while increasingly offering students more progressive curricula to meet changing economic and cultural realities. In compliance with white Southern and Baptist conservative values, Judson’s students generally accepted …

Haramed And Dangerous: A Thematic Examination Of Muslim Women’S Representation In We Are Lady Parts, Reham Bohamad
Haramed And Dangerous: A Thematic Examination Of Muslim Women’S Representation In We Are Lady Parts, Reham Bohamad
Dissertations
Since the early days of Western media, Muslim women have been portrayed in a negative way. From belly dancers to oil-rich horny sheikhs to voiceless passive wives of terrorists. This image has led the Western spectator to associate Islam and the Muslim women’s headscarf (Hijab) with backwardness, extremism, and oppression. In recent years, there has been a positive shift towards a more inclusive and authentic representation of Muslim women. This shift is the result of the post-network era which provides on-demand media outlets that challenge the dominant hegemonic production system and provide diverse and inclusive images that cater to niche …

Searching For Nonbinary And Trans Inclusion: A Call To Action For Leadership Studies, Jody Condit Fagan, Ari Emilia Short
Libraries
Academic studies of leadership have historically taken a binary view of gender. A literature review was conducted to search for any scholarly work inclusive of trans and nonbinary identities. Across three academic databases and five leadership journals, only 11 such sources were found. These results were reviewed to explore themes across their findings as well as suggestions for future research. The analysis of the 11 sources’ findings and recommendations offer guidance for expanding conceptions of gender in leadership; for enhancing leadership education; and for developing a more complete research agenda for gender and leadership studies. Suggestions are also offered for …

Equivalent Running Leg Lengths Require Prosthetic Legs To Be Longer Than Biological Legs During Standing, Janet H. Zhang-Lea, Joshua R. Tacca, Owen N. Beck, Paolo Taboga, Alena M. Grabowski
Human Physiology Faculty Scholarship
We aimed to determine a method for prescribing a standing prosthetic leg length (ProsL) that results in an equivalent running biological leg length (BioL) for athletes with unilateral (UTTA) and bilateral transtibial amputations (BTTA). We measured standing leg length of ten non-amputee (NA) athletes, ten athletes with UTTA, and five athletes with BTTA. All athletes performed treadmill running trials from 3 m/s to their maximum speed. We calculated standing and running BioL and ProsL lengths and assessed the running-to-standing leg length ratio (Lratio) at three instances during ground contact: touchdown, mid-stance, and take-off. Athletes with UTTA had 2.4 cm longer …

Cenabis Bene: A Culinary Odyssey Through Apicius, Kathryn Atkinson
Cenabis Bene: A Culinary Odyssey Through Apicius, Kathryn Atkinson
University Scholar Projects
Apicius is the sole surviving cookbook from classical antiquity; as such it is invaluable for what it tells us about ancient feasting customs. Yet the gluttony typically associated with classical antiquity has no place in Apicius beyond the art that is inherently associated with food; we are not so much given a seat at the cena (dinner) as we are led into the kitchen, handed an apron, and instructed to cook. This critical analysis explores each recipe not only on the surface—i.e., examining the ingredients and recreating selected recipes—but also on a deeper level, lifting food above its concrete reality …

An Undifferentiated Cause Of Rhabdomyolysis: A Case Report, Pallavi Patil, Jennifer Davidson, Sundip Patel
An Undifferentiated Cause Of Rhabdomyolysis: A Case Report, Pallavi Patil, Jennifer Davidson, Sundip Patel
Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Departmental Research
Background
Rhabdomyolysis can occur secondary to infections, trauma, or myotoxic substances. Rhabdomyolysis secondary to autoimmune myositis occurs rarely. Distinguishing autoimmune rhabdomyolysis from rhabdomyolysis secondary to other causes is paramount in considering the long-term management of autoimmune rhabdomyolysis. It is further important to continue close follow-up and further testing to completely understand the extent of this disease as diagnoses may be ever-changing.
Case presentation
A previously healthy female presented to the hospital with myalgias and myoglobinuria following a respiratory infection treated with azithromycin and promethazine. Labs demonstrating elevated creatine kinase (CK) prompted treatment for rhabdomyolysis and rheumatology consultation. The patient was …
An Exposition From Four-Vector To Quantum Field Theory, Weverton Dos Santos Alves
An Exposition From Four-Vector To Quantum Field Theory, Weverton Dos Santos Alves
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The goal of this thesis is to research leading mass-generation theoretical models in particle physics; Which is the physics that fundamentally imparts mass on the known elementary particles. Before these mechanisms, all particles are massless quantum fields. As part of a 2021 REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) and a team investigating quark mass at Jefferson National Lab, I worked on a mechanical design of the Lepton Direction Electromagnetic calorimeter part of the detector upgrade for the Brookhaven National Laboratory. As integral as this effort is, because the theoretical aspects of mass generation and quark mass physics are traditionally beyond what …
Spectral Multistep Methods For The Scalable Simulation Of Time-Dependent Phenomena, Bailey Rester
Spectral Multistep Methods For The Scalable Simulation Of Time-Dependent Phenomena, Bailey Rester
Dissertations
Krylov subspace spectral (KSS) methods are high-order accurate, one-step explicit time-stepping methods for partial differential equations (PDEs) that also possess stability characteristic of implicit methods. Unlike other time-stepping approaches, KSS methods compute each Fourier coefficient of the solution from an individualized approximation of the solution operator of the PDE, using techniques developed by Golub and Meurant for approximating bilinear forms involving matrix functions. As a result, KSS methods scale effectively to higher spatial resolution.
This dissertation will present spectral multistep methods, explicit and implicit, designed through the combination of KSS methods and Adams methods. This combination allows spectral multistep methods …

The Effect Of Sulfonamides Structural And Reactive Properties Examined Through Difunctionalization Of Alkenes, Gavin Rustin
The Effect Of Sulfonamides Structural And Reactive Properties Examined Through Difunctionalization Of Alkenes, Gavin Rustin
Dissertations
Alkenes as masked functional groups have been a hallmark of organic chemistry and have been utilized to diversify natural products and medicinal targets. Disubstitutions have been a challenge for researchers as the reactions that are implemented most are not selective for the face that they attack. Investigations into electrophilic cyclization looked to overcome this phenomenon by introducing a known chiral center α to an amine where a protecting group, sulfonamide, is added to increase the torsional and allylic strain in the molecules. X-ray crystal structures and NMR techniques prove that the strain does affect the diastereoselectivity of the reaction through …
