Since the end of World War II, successful developing countries such as South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and, more recently China, have leveraged industrial policies—notably trade measures and subsidies—to achieve economic development. However, these industrial policy tools often conflict with the rules of international trade established under the World Trade Organization (WTO law), which aims to minimize government interference and reduce trade distortions. Paradoxically, such regulatory constraints hinder the development aspirations of many countries. This article examines the persistent failure of U.S. economic sanctions to catalyze democratic transition in Venezuela, addressing the growing disconnect between the statutory intent of American foreign policy and the resulting humanitarian and geopolitical realities. While the U.S. government shifted from targeted sanctions against corrupt individuals to comprehensive measures against the Venezuelan oil industry, this strategy has failed to dislodge Nicolas Maduro’s oppressive regime. Instead, the article identifies a critical backfire of such policies, where broad economic pressure has inadvertently facilitated the consolidation of authoritarian power and worsened domestic suffering. This Article examines parallel proceedings in international commercial disputes, focusing on situations in which the same parties and substantially the same issues are simultaneously before a national court and an arbitral tribunal. It surveys the principal tools that jurisdictions have developed to address this problem, including the priority-in-time rule, the prioritization of arbitral tribunals, tolerance of parallel proceedings, anti-suit injunctions, and anti-arbitration injunctions. After evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each approach, the Article argues that prioritizing arbitral tribunals provides the most coherent and workable framework for managing such conflicts. Purpose: The Ki-67 proliferation index (Ki-67 PI) has been associated with meningioma recurrence, yet its clinical utility remains debated. Whether Ki-67 PI provides prognostic information across subgroups defined by both WHO grade and extent of resection remains to be investigated.

Methods: We analyzed 5,050 patients with intracranial meningiomas from the international PERNS cohort (42 centers, diagnosed between 1989-2019) who underwent surgical resection without postoperative radiotherapy. Ki-67 PI prognostic accuracy was assessed up to 10 years postoperatively by using ROC analyses and estimating its association with the risk of recurrence.

Leaders with high self-efficacy demonstrate greater persistence when facing adversity, implement organizational change more readily, and establish higher goals for themselves and their organizations. This qualitative study examines which components of principal preparation programs most strongly contribute to self-efficacy development among aspiring school leaders in Utah, specifically in instructional leadership and management for learning. Through semi-structured interviews with 19 recent graduates from three Utah universities, the research explores how program components influence candidates' confidence to lead schools effectively. Grounded in Bandura's self-efficacy theory, the findings reveal that while cohort-based models and faculty characteristics provide foundational support for overall efficacy development, …

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation treatment technique that has been demonstrated to activate norepinephrinergic areas of the brain supporting neuroplasticity. Research shows that tVNS may enhance cognitive performance such as memory, as it may elicit the release of key neurotransmitters that modulate cognitive performance and memory formation. The current study aims to investigate the effects of tVNS on short-term memory among those with mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI). Preliminary results show that tVNS has a positive impact on short-term memory in participants with mTBI, evidenced by faster reaction time and higher accuracy in the memory tests. …

Objectives

Examine how offense severity and victim–offender relationship shape intentions to report violence and engage in avoidance behaviors among residents of high-crime neighborhoods.

Methods

A 2×2 factorial survey experiment was embedded in a community survey of 220 adults from nine high-crime St. Louis, MO neighborhoods. Logistic regression models estimated vignette effects on reporting and avoidance intentions.

Results

Firearm presence increased intentions to contact police and community workers and avoid risk. Simple assaults by strangers were more likely to be reported to police than those by acquaintances. Respondents expressed willingness to report to police and family or friends, but not community …

This thesis argues that the United States systematically worked to destabilize the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and initiate regime change through economic sanctions, propaganda campaigns, funding of political opposition movements, and the facilitation of NATO bombing campaigns. Through an examination of recently declassified U.S. government documents, National Security Council briefings, and diplomatic correspondence, a more complicated reality of U.S. involvement in Yugoslavia emerges. Evidence reveals that the Clinton Administration leveraged the real humanitarian crisis in Kosovo to advance post-Cold War strategic interests, particularly the political and economic unification of Europe under NATO. Mediation analyses provide insight into both ‘pieces’ of the mediation chain; they allow us to look into the ‘black box’ that is behavior change. They allow researchers to better understand the ‘how’ of an intervention’s effects and/or the ‘why’ behind why an intervention worked or did not work. Internships serve as a key pathway for international students in the United States to prepare them for the job market. However, the process of searching for internships is full of uncertainty, and emotionally demanding. This qualitative study, guided by the Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping, examines international graduate students at the University of Memphis, focusing on their emotional responses during their internship search and their coping strategies. The study conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 international graduate students at the University of Memphis. This study examined how citizenship education has been defined, discussed, and framed in major social studies journals between 1980 and 2025. While citizenship education has long been identified as a central purpose of social studies, its meaning has shifted in response to changing political, social, and educational contexts. Distracted driving remains a critical road safety challenge, as existing detection methods often rely on single-modality inputs that lack the contextual nuance to distinguish hazardous behavior from normal driving. This research program addresses these limitations through a progressive three-study framework that advances context-aware detection from systematic evidence synthesis to multimodal foundation model adaptation, reframing detection as a representational alignment problem. Study One systematically reviewed 77 peer-reviewed papers (2019–2025) across visual, sensor-based, and emerging modalities. This dissertation explores the role of the baritenor in musical theatre. “Baritenor” is a tenor subcategorization which melds vocal characteristics and qualities of both the tenor and baritone voice and offers additional clarification for the singer in regards to casting. Urban high schools serving historically under-resourced communities continue to experience persistent inequities in academic outcomes, student belonging, and school culture despite decades of reform. Leadership scholarship has identified several domains relevant to addressing these inequities, including instructional leadership, relational trust, care ethics, cultural responsiveness, trauma-responsive practice, and equity-centered decision-making. However, these domains are most often studied in isolation. This study focuses on the solo guitar compositions of Nikita Koshkin, including complete analyses of Usher Waltz, Fall of Birds, and Merlin’s Dream. The method for research uses foundational work by Charles S. Peirce and Ferdinand de Saussure for its approach to semiotics. This sensory ethnographic study conducted in the summer of 2025 looks at the impact of for us, by us queer spaces on queer young adults working as counselors at a queer youth camp located in a rural Midwestern United States area. Aging drives systemic functional decline and represents the primary risk factor for comorbidities and mortality. Immune dysregulation is central to chronic age-related inflammation, with macrophages acting as key mediators of unresolved tissue damage. This functional compromise coincides with metabolic maladaptations including elevated mitochondrial stress and impaired mitophagy, which exacerbate oxidative stress and inflammatory overstimulation. However, the exact mechanistic links driving these phenotypes remain incompletely understood.
