Zoning And City Revenues: Does Euclidean Zoning Impact Cities' Tax Revenues?, Jett Robert Meek May 2023

Zoning And City Revenues: Does Euclidean Zoning Impact Cities' Tax Revenues?, Jett Robert Meek

Honors College Theses

This paper is primarily concerned with measuring the impact of zoning for single family residential on city tax revenues within the San Francisco Bay Area. Single family residential zoning acts as a form of Euclidean zoning by restricting zoned land to one type or use. In the wake of decisions of cities such as Minneapolis to end zoning for single family housing, there has been a push for more research into the possible impacts going forward. This paper takes cross-sectional data from 2020 for 101 cities within the Bay Area. To estimate the impact of zoning on city tax revenues, …

The leading hypothesis for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) has traditionally focused on the aggregation of Amyloid-β into amyloid plaques. However, research has yet to definitively prove the role of the amyloid peptide in the pathology of the disease. Given that all therapeutics targeting amyloid plaques have failed in clinical trials, with one exception, there is a need to explore alternative approaches to treatment of this disease. Therefore, we examined other factors that are altered during AD pathogenesis. Many AD patients have dysregulation of metal ions, such as copper and zinc, in addition to accumulation of Amyloid-β. The interaction between Amyloid-β and …

Grammatical Triples Extraction For The Distant Reading Of Textual Corpora, Stephanie Buongiorno, Stephanie Buongiorno May 2023

Grammatical Triples Extraction For The Distant Reading Of Textual Corpora, Stephanie Buongiorno, Stephanie Buongiorno

Multidisciplinary Studies Theses and Dissertations

Grammatical triples extraction has become increasingly important for the analysis of large, textual corpora. By providing insight into the sentence-level linguistic features of a corpus, extracted triples have supported interpretations of some of the most relevant problems of our time. The growing importance of triples extraction for analyzing large corpora has put the quality of extracted triples under new scrutiny, however. Triples outputs are known to have large amounts of erroneous triples. The extraction of erroneous triples poses a risk for understanding a textual corpus because erroneous triples can be nonfactual and even analogous to misinformation. Disciplines such as the …

Landslide Forecast In Taiwan Based On Machine Learning In The Gis Field, Yi Shen May 2023

Landslide Forecast In Taiwan Based On Machine Learning In The Gis Field, Yi Shen

Honors Capstones

Landslides can pose a significant risk to life, property, and infrastructure in mountainous regions, and can be triggered by various factors, including intense rainfall, earthquakes, and water level changes. Machine learning is commonly used to forecast landslides, based on statistical relationships between past landslides and multiple variables to create a general forecasting model. However, these models often require large amounts of data to achieve accurate results. This project aims to use only a few variables but take advantage of both their spatial distribution and temporal trends to improve the accuracy of landslide forecasts. This approach is tested in Taiwan, a …

The Elephant In The Garden, Ila France Porcher May 2023

The Elephant In The Garden, Ila France Porcher

Animal Sentience

The other commentators on Chapman & Huffman (2018) have pointed out in different ways that despite our biological nature, there is a widespread tendency for humans to believe that we are not only superior to animals, but that we are not animals at all. Alongside our denial of animal sentience and cognition, this has resulted in the denial of our own instinctive natures. It is this denial that is our error, for it is only by understanding our true natural heritage that we can begin to change the runaway path we are on.

Addressing The Kentucky (9-12) High School Teacher Shortage Through Correlations Of Teacher Turnover And Working Conditions, Ryan Cowsert

Ed.D. Capstone Reports

Our country is currently experiencing a nationwide teacher shortage that continues to grow as more teachers leave the profession than join it. According to a recent study, 55% of the nation’s teachers are considering leaving the profession. Specifically, in Kentucky, 72% are considered at risk of leaving the profession. National teaching data suggest poor working conditions are the primary reason for teacher turnover (Carver-Thomas & Darling-Hammond, 2017). Therefore, can it be inferred that schools with better working conditions experience less turnover than schools with poorer working conditions? This study was designed to determine the magnitude of correlations between teacher turnover …

Neuroinflammatory And Metabolomic Temporal Dynamics From Inhaled Wildfire Smoke With Attenuation Via Pharmacological Intervention, David Scieszka

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Wildfire smoke is a global issue affecting nearly all humans on the surface of this Earth. Smoke dispersion from wildfires can span continents and cross oceans with amazing ease. Furthermore, total acres of land burned per year in the United States has roughly doubled since 1980, meaning this issue will persist for an indeterminate amount of time. Exposure to wildfire smoke is hazardous and promotes aging-associated events in the cardiopulmonary systems. Yet long- and short-term effects on the brain remain relatively unknown. From these, it is critically important to understand the neurological impacts from wildfire smoke exposure; to compare these …

Mechanisim Of Plasmon-Driven Photochemical Reactions, Hamed Kookhaee May 2023

Mechanisim Of Plasmon-Driven Photochemical Reactions, Hamed Kookhaee

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Understanding a photocatalytic reaction condition that selectively leads to a desired product on metal surfaces is a longstanding research problem in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, using plasmon enhanced N-demethylation of methylene blue (MB) as model reaction, we show that high degree of product selectivity can be achieved by switching the mechanism from charge transfer to adsorbate electronic excitation and vice versa using surface ligands. In the presence of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) surface ligand on gold nanoparticles, MB is selectively transformed to thionine at 633 nm excitation wavelength that overlaps with the electronic transition of the adsorbate. At resonant excitation …
