The Politics Of Care: An Analysis Of The Lives And Stories Of Black Birth Workers In New York City, Mayannah Beauvoir May 2023

The Politics Of Care: An Analysis Of The Lives And Stories Of Black Birth Workers In New York City, Mayannah Beauvoir

Theses - ALL

“The Politics of Care: An Analysis of the Lives and Stories of Black Birth Workers in New York City'' examines the complex relationship between Black birth workers and the state. Black birth work, traditionally, has existed as resistance to state policies and actors that limited Black women’s reproductive freedom. In New York City, where Black maternal mortality and morbidity outcomes are comparable to the national average, the state has mobilized to produce the Citywide Doula Initiative, a program designed to provide free birth worker support to families in financial need. Considering the violent relationship between birth workers and the state, …

The Utopian Quest: A Visual And Cultural Exploration Of Ideal Lands, Lingyin Luo May 2023

The Utopian Quest: A Visual And Cultural Exploration Of Ideal Lands, Lingyin Luo

Theses - ALL

This thesis explores the concept of utopia across different cultures, analyzing the ideal lands in Eastern and Western societies. The author categorizes utopian ideals into two types: Thomas More-style utopias, which aim for social and political perfection, and Arcadian ideals, which prioritize individual inner peace and escape from society. The author compares the ways of entering, the environments, the lifestyles, and the consequences of leaving mentioned in these stories to identify the visual language involved. These visual elements of ideal lands provide a solid foundation for the author's visual thesis, a video game that allows players to build their own …

The Ecology Of Fine-Scale, Tissue-Specific Floral Scent Patterns In An Obligate Brood-Pollination Mutualism., Gwen Melissa Bode May 2023

The Ecology Of Fine-Scale, Tissue-Specific Floral Scent Patterns In An Obligate Brood-Pollination Mutualism., Gwen Melissa Bode

Theses - ALL

Abstract: Interactions between plants and insect pollinators are of critical importance as the majority of flowering plants rely on animals for pollination and insects are the most diverse group of pollinators on Earth. To obtain pollination services plants must attract pollinators by signaling the presence of rewards, and chemosensory cues including floral scent are of particular importance to pollinator attraction. In highly-specialized brood-pollination mutualisms, like the yucca-yucca moth mutualism, the “reward” for pollinators is a brood site and food source for their offspring: fertilized plant ovules. Being able to distinguish among floral parts is critical for yucca moths to successfully …

Associations Between Parental Separation In Adolescence And Romantic Relationship Quality In Emerging Adulthood, Chloe Ludden May 2023

Associations Between Parental Separation In Adolescence And Romantic Relationship Quality In Emerging Adulthood, Chloe Ludden

Theses - ALL

Abstract Parental separation can impact multiple aspects of an individual’s life, including romantic relationship satisfaction (Amato, 2010). Albert Bandura’s social learning theory suggests that children model their behavior based on their parents’ example, which means those whose parents separate may adopt similar relationship practices that lead to their eventual separation with their romantic partner– this could contribute to the pattern of divorce being more common in those whose parents’ divorced (Amato & Deboer, 2001; Bandura, 1977; Ross & Mirowsky, 1999). It is important to interrupt this pattern to prevent the cycle of negative impacts of parental divorce on children being …

Macroproblems Require Microsolutions: The Case For Microgrids In The U.S. Energy Infrastructure, David Howie May 2023

Macroproblems Require Microsolutions: The Case For Microgrids In The U.S. Energy Infrastructure, David Howie

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper explores the shortcomings of the modern United States Power Grid in the face of climate change and worsening climate conditions, and seeks to explore how alternative styles of power grids could be viable replacements for current designs. The power grid is one of the most fundamental aspects of modern life, without it there would be no reliable energy supply to power devices and machinery. Oftentimes when energy generation is discussed in the United States, it only focuses on the source of generation for the energy, not the transmission of the energy. The lack of complete discussion around this …

Implementation Of A Biometric Screening Program And Wellness Coaching Program In A Hospital Employee Wellness Center, Carl Gastanes

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Background: Wellness programs are an emerging priority among organizations concerned about employee wellness and productivity. Data from Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC) revealed that in 2019 there were 1,690 employee visits to the ER due to chronic diseases; 30% were classified as ER sick visit and 40% of employees who visited the ER had no primary care provider. Many companies use biometric screening and health risk assessment to measure the health of their employees. The purpose of this improvement project was to implement a biometric screening program (BSP) that included wellness coaching to improve the health outcomes of LIJMC …

Pórtate Bien Con La Maestra And Early Childhood Maker Education: How The Border Questions Quality, Heather G. Kaplan, Diane E. Golding May 2023

Pórtate Bien Con La Maestra And Early Childhood Maker Education: How The Border Questions Quality, Heather G. Kaplan, Diane E. Golding

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This paper troubles and retells the story of quality art education in a STEAM makerspace in an elementary school along the U.S.-Mexico border. Through questioning quality, we embrace the multivalent nature of belonging and the complexity of teaching art and researching with, among, and about others. Boundaries, borders, and belonging are explored through sites of conflicting quality. We consider the Mexican colloquialism ‘Pórtate bien con la maestra” along with progressive art education as antagonistic notions of quality that produce contrasting educational technologies and complicated notions of belonging, invasion, and settlement.

Whose Art Museum? Immersive Gaming As Irruption, Jason M. Cox, Lillian Lewis May 2023

Whose Art Museum? Immersive Gaming As Irruption, Jason M. Cox, Lillian Lewis

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This paper introduces Mantles in the Museum, an immersive game that helps ameliorate student discomfort in art museums and to support discourse in, through, and around art museums. Within the game the students take on the roles of critics who use one of five interpretive frameworks, often differing from the student’s own, to select works from a real museum to go to an international exhibition. Assuming these roles empowers students to be in the museum and to assess the works, students are given leave to engage in a vigorous critique process and to examine the art-world from a new perspective.

Disrupting Art Museum Experiences: Interventions In A University Art Museum, Carissa Dicindio Ph.D, Christine Brindza, Shiloe Fontes, Johnathan Frew, Sonya Landau, Michelle Landry, Devan Marín, Sydney Streightiff, Rachel Zollinger

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this paper, graduate students in an art education course and their instructor share a project created in response to an exhibition focused on themes of food in their university art museum. Students worked in groups to create interventions designed to offer alternative ways to engage with works of art through experimentation, sensory experiences, participatory practices, and humor. These interventions expand the ways visitors can approach works of art and give openings for participants to include their own voices in the exhibition. They also illustrate the potential for university art museums serve as laboratories on campus that challenge traditional authoritative …

Creating Commons: Photovoice Philosophy In A Third Space, Jason M. Cox, Lynne Hamer May 2023

Creating Commons: Photovoice Philosophy In A Third Space, Jason M. Cox, Lynne Hamer

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Teach Toledo is a program that the authors co-coordinate using community assets to create a third space to confront systemic racism’s impact on teacher education programs and facilitate hybridity (Bhaba, 1994). Diverse student cohort members use their lived experience as the base for their individual and shared urban educational philosophies, coordinated in a first-year horizontally and vertically integrated curriculum including written compositions and a PhotoVoice project. “Creating commons” refers not only to provision of a third space as a common space where private experiences can be combined to create a hybrid, new understanding, but also to the creative act of …

Who Belongs In The Future?: Afrofuturism, Art Education And Alternative Narratives, Emily Hogrefe-Ribeiro May 2023

Who Belongs In The Future?: Afrofuturism, Art Education And Alternative Narratives, Emily Hogrefe-Ribeiro

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This paper describes an art and Afrofuturism art experience that took place during the summer of 2020. Led by an art museum educator, the virtual experience was held over Zoom with a group of ten White adults. The art experience focused on alternative narratives and introduced participants to Afrofuturism as contemporary artistic practice and pedagogical approach. A critical multiculturalism theoretical framework informed the experience, and participants analyzed Afrofuturist art and representations in mass media to interrogate the ways that Whiteness influences conceptions of the future in Western culture and their own lives. Participants built on what they learned to create …

Sacred Spheres: Religious Autonomy As An International Human Right, Diana V. Thomson, Kayla A. Toney May 2023

Sacred Spheres: Religious Autonomy As An International Human Right, Diana V. Thomson, Kayla A. Toney

Catholic University Law Review

How should courts resolve thorny human rights disputes that arise within religious groups? According to an emerging international consensus, they shouldn’t. When a case involves sensitive internal decisions by a religious organization, such as choosing who is qualified to teach the faith, courts are increasingly taking a hands-off approach. This global consensus has formed across international treaties, tribunals, and domestic courts in European and American nations. Every major human rights instrument and many international and domestic courts recognize that religious freedom must extend to religious communities, especially houses of worship and schools where believers gather to practice their faith and …

Black Lives Matter And The Push For Colonial-Era Cultural Heritage Restitution, Kathryn Speckart May 2023

Black Lives Matter And The Push For Colonial-Era Cultural Heritage Restitution, Kathryn Speckart

Catholic University Law Review

The influence of the Black Lives Matter movement extends into U.S. museums in the form of calls for “decolonization” of collections comprised of art and artifacts from Africa and other colonized areas. As a result, the accompanying legal and ethical questions surrounding these artifacts now figure prominently in the museum industry. This Comment analyzes why the current U.S. cultural heritage law framework does not accommodate colonial-era African artifacts. This is due to few of these artifacts being subject to legal claims under current laws, African artifacts not having protection as a special classification, and the lack of enforcement mechanisms in …

Blue Water Navy Veterans And The Agent Orange Rulings: A Lifeboat For The Veterans; A Storm Warning For The Vba, Jennifer Howley May 2023

Blue Water Navy Veterans And The Agent Orange Rulings: A Lifeboat For The Veterans; A Storm Warning For The Vba, Jennifer Howley

Catholic University Law Review

Agent Orange was a herbicidal chemical used by the U.S. military for tactical use during the Vietnam War. Although initially told by the government not to worry about exposure to the chemical, veterans, their wives, and their offspring began having severe health and reproductive issues. In the early 1990’s, Congress passed the Agent Orange Act and the government directed the Institute of Medicine to report on the health effects of Agent Orange. Through this approach, Vietnam Veterans could claim benefits for illnesses listed in connection with Agent Orange. But only some Vietnam Veterans.

Initially, only veterans who served on-shore or …

Implementation Of A Decision Aid To Increase The Rate Of Routine Breast Cancer Screening Among Women Between 50 To 74 Years Old At A Federally Qualified Health Center, Dana Mars

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Background: Breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in the U.S. Cancer screenings can result in prompt treatments and positive health outcomes. Disparities in screening rates are prevalent among vulnerable populations. At a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), where the project occurred, the rate of breast cancer screening in 2021 (64%) was lower than the target set by the Healthy People 2030 (77%). This quality improvement project aimed to increase the rate of routine breast cancer screening among women aged 50-74 years old in the FQHC.

Methods: Previous studies have reported that decision aids on breast cancer screening …

Implementation Of Readmission Prevention Pathway To Reduce Skilled Nursing Facility Readmission, Bina Darai May 2023

Implementation Of Readmission Prevention Pathway To Reduce Skilled Nursing Facility Readmission, Bina Darai

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Background: Individuals admitted to Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) are at risk of preventable hospital readmissions due to complex medical issues. Evidence indicates that many residents are transferred from SNFs to the hospital at least once. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services penalizes facilities with high rehospitalization rates. Implementing an evidence-based strategy could reduce 30-day readmission rates in this setting.

Local problem: This project was conducted in a 34-bed Sub-Acute Care Unit in an SNF. The unit's 30-day readmission rate was high compared to the average rate at the SNF and the national benchmark, identifying a need to reduce readmission. …

To Dig A Hole And Fill It Back Up, Jackson Whetstone May 2023

To Dig A Hole And Fill It Back Up, Jackson Whetstone

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

Abstract:

The socioeconomical philosophy of the United States is still very much related to the Marxist Labor Theory of Value which states that “the economic value of a good or service is determined by the amount of socially necessary labor required to produce it” (Das Kapital, Marx 1.) This philosophy has penetrated the way that we think about art and object, and in turn positions art as a means of transaction, thus limiting art to a form of glorified currency. This Essay will chronicle my art practice, that have led up to two thesis pieces, Trench and Dig …

A Loud Volume Landscape, Grace Buyers May 2023

A Loud Volume Landscape, Grace Buyers

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

It feels more like sounding it out than constructing it. Choosing and adapting images, concentrating on the auxiliary fragments (out-of-focus elements, the corner of the table, the reflection in the window, the highway median) and the backgrounds (the sky and its clouds, the gravel ground, the movement of the water, the horizons where these meet), I then breathe them together. The final products are primarily collages, and though they are originally constructed from printed media and found objects, their final forms are scanned and rematerialized. The content of these works focuses on the relationships between the chosen fragments and how …

A Meditation On Loneliness And The Mind's Limits: Combining Buddhism And Art To Better Understand Our Relationship To The Unknown, William Masters May 2023

A Meditation On Loneliness And The Mind's Limits: Combining Buddhism And Art To Better Understand Our Relationship To The Unknown, William Masters

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

In this essay, I explain how my art practice instigates inquiry into uncomfortable subjects such as loneliness and how our limits of perception and cognition prevent us from understanding and connecting fully with our environments. I begin by illustrating how I make such subjects more approachable by exploiting the inherent capacity of art to be both pleasurable and painful: a work's pleasing aesthetic can make one more receptive to its disquieting content. I then describe how eastern philosophy and western art have influenced my practice. I highlight how Buddhist insights into the relationship between calmness, security and clarity have informed …
