Action Recognition Method Based On Projection Subspace Views Under Single Viewing Angle, Benyue Su, Manzhen Sun, Qing Ma, Min Sheng
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In view of the self-occlusion problem of joint action tracking by a depth camera under a single viewing angle, a new human action recognition method based on projection subspace views is proposed. Without adding data acquisition equipment, the method projects the three-dimensional(3D) action sequences obtained under a single viewing angle into multiple two-dimensional subspacesand then seeks the maximum distance between classes in the two-dimensional subspaces, so as to increase the distance between 3D actions based on the fusion of multiple subspace views as much as possible. The recognition rate in the self-built AQNU …

Saudi Adults In Vaso-Occlusive Crisis Accessing Healthcare For Pain Management: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Jawhrah Alqahtani
Dissertations
Vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) require frequent utilization of healthcare services by adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). This increases the likelihood of poor care and healthcare disparities. The experiences of SCD patients attempting to access pain management have rarely been examined. An evaluation of these experiences may ease the lifelong suffering of Saudi Arabians affected by SCD.
This study explored the lived experience of Saudi Arabian adults when accessing the healthcare system for pain management in VOC.

Mixed Method - How Do Medical-Surgical Nurses Provide Compassionate Care To Patients In The Face Of Adversity?, Diane D. Kret
Mixed Method - How Do Medical-Surgical Nurses Provide Compassionate Care To Patients In The Face Of Adversity?, Diane D. Kret
Dissertations
Compassion is a quality that is the very essence of nursing. Nurses, as professionals, seek to alleviate suffering. It is through providing compassionate, connected care that nurses can relieve their patients' suffering. In the midst of adversity such as taking care of ill and dying patients, especially in the Covid-19 pandemic, nurses have been challenged with providing compassionate care despite the increased toll that this may have on them. There is evidence that exposure to these events can cause compassion fatigue and burnout. When these signs of compassion fatigue or compassion burnout are not addressed, nurses have decreased job satisfaction …

Progress to reduce plastic pollution has been painfully slow and the consequent damage to the natural environment and to human health is likely to increase further. This has been because the views and ways of working of four distinct stakeholder communities are not sufficiently well integrated. (1) Scientists, (2) industry, (3) society at large and (4) those making policy and legislation must in future find ways to work together.
Algorithmic Bias: Causes And Effects On Marginalized Communities, Katrina M. Baha
Algorithmic Bias: Causes And Effects On Marginalized Communities, Katrina M. Baha
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Individuals from marginalized backgrounds face different healthcare outcomes due to algorithmic bias in the technological healthcare industry. Algorithmic biases, which are the biases that arise from the set of steps used to solve or analyze a problem, are evident when people from marginalized communities use healthcare technology. For example, many pulse oximeters, which are the medical devices used to measure oxygen saturation in the blood, are not able to accurately read people who have darker skin tones. Thus, people with darker skin tones are not able to receive proper health care due to their pulse oximetry data being inaccurate. This …

Understanding The Connection Between Gypsum Blooms And Human Health At The Salton Sea, Isabel Ichiyama
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Salton Sea is a closed hypersaline lake in Southern California that has been receiving little input over the past few decades, leading to desiccation that is rapidly increasing every year. This large-scale evaporation of the sea has led to increased dissolved solutes, high salinity, and gypsum blooms. Gypsum blooms, the precipitation of gypsum (CaSO42H2O) in the sea, have been a prominent facet of the sea and their distribution is well known. However, much of their chemistry and potential health hazards are still undetermined. Potential health effects from gypsum salt, an atmospheric dust particle present at the sea, have known …

Background and Aim: Donepezil is a front-line treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Donepezil treatment is associated with decreased risk of all-cause mortality. Specific protection is observed in pneumonia and cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that donepezil treatment would improve mortality among Alzheimer’s patients following infection with COVID-19. The objective of this study is to assess the influence of ongoing donepezil treatment on survival in Alzheimer’s disease patients after polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed COVID-19 infection. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. We conducted a national survey of Veterans with Alzheimer’s disease to assess the influence of ongoing donepezil treatment on survival in …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
We evaluate the prospects for radio follow-up of the double neutron stars (DNSs) in the Galactic disk that could be detected through future space-borne gravitational wave (GW) detectors. We first simulate the DNS population in the Galactic disk that is accessible to space-borne GW detectors according to the merger rate from recent LIGO results. Using the inspiraling waveform for the eccentric binary, the average number of the DNSs detectable by TianQin (TQ), LISA, and TQ+LISA are 217, 368, and 429, respectively. For the joint GW detection of TQ+LISA, the forecasted parameter estimation accuracies, based on the Fisher information matrix, for …

The current study presents data from the first longitudinal examination of sexual minority (SM) Mormons (n = 132). Over the course of 2 years, SM Mormons reported decreased psychological (e.g., orthodox beliefs), behavioral (e.g., service attendance), and social (interpersonal religious commitment) religiousness. Analyses revealed that, at baseline, service attendance was related to lower levels of meaning in life and higher levels of depression at time 2, while interpersonal religious commitment at baseline was related to higher levels of meaning in life and lower levels of depression. Latent change scores of religiousness suggested that decreases in interpersonal religious commitment over …

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Despite its remoteness, human activity has impacted the deep sea and changes to the structure and function of deep-sea ecosystems are already noticeable. In terrestrial and shallow water marine environments, demonstrating how ecosystems support human well-being has been instrumental in setting policy and management objectives for sustainable resource use. Foundational to this approach is a framework of ecosystem service (ES) classification and a synthesis of the knowledge base, which can then be used to structure decision-support tools such as ecosystem accounts or Environmental Impact Assessments. At present, no such framework exists for the deep sea. There is thus an urgent …

An Exploration Of The Latent Space Of A Convolutional Variational Autoencoder For The Generation Of Musical Instrument Tones, Anastasia Natsiou, Sean O'Leary, Luca Longo
Conference papers
Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) constitute one of the most significant deep generative models for the creation of synthetic samples. In the field of audio synthesis, VAEs have been widely used for the generation of natural and expressive sounds, such as music or speech. However, VAEs are often considered black boxes and the attributes that contribute to the synthesis of a sound are yet unsolved. Existing research focused on the way input data can influence the generation of latent space, and how this latent space can create synthetic data, is still insufficient. In this manuscript, we investigate the interpretability of the latent …
A Novel Approach To The Treatment Of Degenerative Disc Disease, Alexandra Mckillop
A Novel Approach To The Treatment Of Degenerative Disc Disease, Alexandra Mckillop
Theses
Low back pain is estimated to affect 80% of the population at some point in their lives. It places a high economic burden on society, as individuals suffering from low back pain are often less productive and miss more work days, resulting in lost wages (Freburger et al., 2015; Katz, 2006; Taher et al., 2012). Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is among the most common causes of low back pain. It is a pathological process where the intervertebral disc (IVD) undergoes structural changes and is characterized by increased inflammation within the disc, in combination with nerve ingrowth causing pain. Structural changes …

The human endometrium shows a remarkable regenerative capacity that enables cyclical regeneration and remodeling throughout a woman's reproductive life. Although early postnatal uterine developmental cues direct this regeneration, the vital factors that govern early endometrial programming are largely unknown. We report that Beclin-1, an essential autophagy-associated protein, plays an integral role in uterine morphogenesis during the early postnatal period. We show that conditional depletion of Beclin-1 in the uterus triggers apoptosis and causes progressive loss of Lgr5+/Aldh1a1+ endometrial progenitor stem cells, with concomitant loss of Wnt signaling, which is crucial for stem cell renewal and epithelial gland development. Beclin-1 knockin …

Reconstruction Of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy-Computed Tomography, Chia-Lung Chien
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Purpose: Volumetric modulated arc therapy-computed tomography (VMAT-CT) was proposed in 2010 as the CBCT reconstruction technique using portal images collected during VMAT. Yet, its clinical applications were impeded by the poor image quality due to motion blurs from fast movements of multi-leaf collimator (MLC) and projection data deficiency due to truncations from MLC. The goal of this study is to develop systematic preprocessing methods, and a novel iterative reconstruction algorithm to generate quality VMAT-CT and lower the number of failure cases of VMAT-CT reconstruction.
Methods: Systematic image preprocessing methods, including Online region-based active contouring (ORACM), MLC motion modeling and outlier …

Human neuroimaging has demonstrated the existence of large-scale functional networks in the cerebral cortex consisting of topographically distant brain regions with functionally correlated activity. The salience network (SN), which is involved in detecting salient stimuli and mediating inter-network communication, is a crucial functional network that is disrupted in addiction. Individuals with addiction display dysfunctional structural and functional connectivity of the SN. Furthermore, while there is a growing body of evidence regarding the SN, addiction, and the relationship between the two, there are still many unknowns, and there are fundamental limitations to human neuroimaging studies. At the same time, advances in …

Proper sight is not possible without a smooth, transparent cornea, which is highly exposed to environmental threats. The abundant corneal nerves are interspersed with epithelial cells in the anterior corneal surface and are instrumental to corneal integrity and immunoregulation. Conversely, corneal neuropathy is commonly observed in some immune-mediated corneal disorders but not in others, and its pathogenesis is poorly understood. Here we hypothesized that the type of adaptive immune response may influence the development of corneal neuropathy. To test this, we first immunized OT-II mice with different adjuvants that favor T helper (Th)1 or Th2 responses. Both Th1-skewed mice (measured …

Dyspepsia still becomes a major challenge in upper gastrointestinal disease in Indonesia. This disease often correlated with Helicobacter pylori infection. However, the prevalence of this bacterium is generally low in Indonesia. Therefore, several considerations should be taken into consideration during the management of dyspepsia and H. pylori infection. "Management of dyspepsia and H. pylori infection in Indonesia: The Indonesian consensus report" comprises information gathered from 22 gastroenterology centers across Indonesia. The experts gathered to evolve a consensus, that consists of the statements, grades of recommendations, evidence levels, and rationales for the dyspepsia and H. pylori infection management for daily clinical …
Ross Sea Ocean-Temperature Reconstruction And Marine Radiocarbon Reservoir Effect Calibration From Modern And Pre-Modern Scleractinia, Colby Knight
LSU Master's Theses
Warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) upwelling in the Southern Ocean currently circulates underneath Antarctic ice shelves in many areas. The associated melting reduces the ice-shelf buttressing effect, which can subsequently accelerate flow and cause retreat of grounded and floating ice. Upwelled CDW may have also been a primary driver of post-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) deglaciation, but there are few proxy data from which upwelling history and paleo-ocean temperatures can be reconstructed. Here we build on previous deep, cold-water coral studies (e.g., Stewart et al., 2020) to detect CDW intrusion on the western Ross Sea continental shelf using lithium-to-magnesium ratios (Li/Mg) …
