A Systems Thinking Model on the Sustainability of Online Betting Businesses in the Taiwan Sports Lottery

Day Yang Liu , Chia Yang Chang

Abstract

The Taiwan Sports Lottery began in 2008 and has grown yearly ever since. Its sales are the sixth highest among the hundreds of other sports betting services worldwide. In the Taiwan Sports Lottery, there exists both stores and online platforms. In their early years, online betting businesses did not attract players and were opposed by most retailers running betting stores, leading to low profits. However, after several years, online betting businesses earned retailers’ support, and the …

Infective Endocarditis-Related Pseudoaneurysms After Bentall Surgery: The Role Of 3d Printing In Pre-Surgical Planning And Management: Case Report, Abdalla Eltayeb, Shaid Khan, Irene Landi, Mohammed Aladmawi, Olga Vriz

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

We present a case report of a male patient who underwent modified Bentall surgery with a mechanical valved conduit due to severe aortic regurgitation and ascending aortic aneurysm. Four years later, the patient developed a cascade of events as acute stoke, infective endocarditis due to Brucella abortus complicated by pseudoaneurysms of aortic graft with left ventricular outflow tract communication. A multi-modality approach, included a three-dimensional printing, facilitated the diagnosis and surgical planning. During surgery, the team opted for a salvage approach, and the patient showed continued improvement during follow-up. This case highlights the importance of careful monitoring and detection of …

The Emancipatory Praxis Of Peace And Conflict Studies: The Field Of Genocide Studies, Daniel Rothbart, Douglas Irvin-Erickson May 2023

The Emancipatory Praxis Of Peace And Conflict Studies: The Field Of Genocide Studies, Daniel Rothbart, Douglas Irvin-Erickson

Peace and Conflict Studies

The field of Peace and Conflict Studies (PCS) was launched in the mid-twentieth century with revolutionary aspirations for explaining, describing and understanding protracted violent conflicts. The field’s architects called for inquiry into the “whole person” of conflict actors that required inquiry into the social, psychological and political spheres of their lives. But the proposed research perspectives for carrying out such inquiry were devoid of revolutionary prescription. Regarding such perspectives, they set the stage that continues to this day for disciplinary conservatism by invoking research traditions from the positivist social sciences and from the interpretative social sciences. A third research tradition …

War And Peace In Ukraine: Training For History Teachers On Dynamics Of Peace And Conflict, Karina Korostelina

Peace and Conflict Studies

Many scholars have discussed the complexities of teaching and learning about past conflicts. However, teaching history during ongoing war and occupation is even more difficult and controversial. This paper posits teachers as agents of peacebuilding, influencing how their students come to understand dynamics of conflict, violence, and peace The aim of this paper is to describe a training methodology that addresses history teaching in protracted conflict and discuss its implications for diverse classroom practices in teaching difficult history in divided societies. The training project, supported by the Civil Peace Service and financed by the German government through Deutsche Gesellschaft für …

Determinants Of Conflicts In Local Water Governance And Implications For Peacebuilding In Water Development, Resty Naiga Dr. May 2023

Determinants Of Conflicts In Local Water Governance And Implications For Peacebuilding In Water Development, Resty Naiga Dr.

Peace and Conflict Studies

Recent years have witnessed an increasing focus on water as a source of explicit and implicit conflicts. Water-related conflicts are partly attributed to water mismanagement that escalates water stress and conflicts. Despite this development, our current knowledge on local water conflicts within the context of water policy reforms in developing countries is limited. Given the implications of water-related conflicts on human and water security, it is essential to consider the factors influencing local water conflicts as a means to improve conflict prevention and peacebuilding in water development. Using a transdisciplinary mixed methodological approach, this article analyses variables influencing local water …

Reframing The Ontology Of Peace Studies, Anders Reagan May 2023

Reframing The Ontology Of Peace Studies, Anders Reagan

Peace and Conflict Studies

The academic field of peace studies suffers from a lack of ontological clarity, with peace researchers widely disagreeing on how to define “peace.” This internal incoherence has far-reaching implications for peace study’s scope, theories, and methodologies, and by extension, for peace practice in general. This article explores the possibility that at least part of this incoherence may be due to a fundamental misreading of peace study’s central object of study. Despite significant disagreement between peace researchers on a standardized definition of peace, there seems to be overwhelming consensus that "peace" – in all its varied academic conceptualizations – always relates …

Dynamic Ankle Brace, Amulya Bajracharya May 2023

Dynamic Ankle Brace, Amulya Bajracharya

Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal

The dynamic ankle brace is a 3D printed brace with geometric mesh patterns and two layers of compression sleeves. The goal of the brace is to design a comfortable slim fit ankle brace that is competitive with current ankle support braces on the market. The geometric braces provided similar levels of inversion and eversion as market braces using different sizing. The braces were tested with a custom built testing rig and human participants proving 3d printed braces are flexible yet durable. User feedback indicates users desired stronger stitching of the braces overall.

Human And Technical Factors In The Adoption Of Quantum Cryptographic Algorithms, Alyssa Pinkston May 2023

Human And Technical Factors In The Adoption Of Quantum Cryptographic Algorithms, Alyssa Pinkston

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

The purpose of this research is to understand what factors would cause users to choose quantum key distribution (QKD) over other methods of cryptography. An Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) key can be exchanged through communication using the Rivest, Shamir, Adleman (RSA) cryptographic algorithm, QKD, or post-quantum cryptography (PQC). QKD relies on quantum physics where RSA and PQC use complex mathematics to encrypt data. The BB84 quantum cryptographic protocol involves communication over a quantum channel and a public channel. The quantum channel can be technically attacked by beamsplitting or intercept/resend. QKD, like other forms of cryptography, is vulnerable to social attacks …

Handling Realistic Label Noise In Bert Text Classification, Maha Tufail Agro, Hanan Al Darmaki May 2023

Handling Realistic Label Noise In Bert Text Classification, Maha Tufail Agro, Hanan Al Darmaki

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

Label noise refers to errors in training labels caused by cheap data annotation methods, such as web scraping or crowd-sourcing, which can be detrimental to the performance of supervised classifiers. Several methods have been proposed to counteract the effect of random label noise in supervised classification, and some studies have shown that BERT is already robust against high rates of randomly injected label noise. However, real label noise is not random; rather, it is often correlated with input features or other annotator-specific factors. In this paper, we evaluate BERT in the presence of two types of realistic label noise: feature-dependent …

Identification And Initial Characterization Of Hfq-Associated Srnas In Histophilus Somni Strain 2336, Bindu Subhadra, Dianjun Cao, Roderick Jensen, Clayton Caswell, Thomas J. Inzana May 2023

Identification And Initial Characterization Of Hfq-Associated Srnas In Histophilus Somni Strain 2336, Bindu Subhadra, Dianjun Cao, Roderick Jensen, Clayton Caswell, Thomas J. Inzana

Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences

Small RNAs (sRNA), in association with the global chaperone regulator Hfq, positively or negatively regulate gene expression in bacteria. For this study, Histophilus somni sRNAs that bind to Hfq were identified and then partially characterized. The Hfq-associated sRNAs in H. somni were isolated and identified by co-immunoprecipitation using anti-Hfq antibody, followed by sRNA sequencing. Sequence analysis of the sRNA samples identified 100 putative sRNAs, out of which 16 were present in pathogenic strain 2336, but not in non-pathogenic strain 129Pt. Bioinformatic analyses suggested that the sRNAs HS9, HS79, and HS97 could bind to many genes putatively involved in virulence/biofilm formation. …

How’S It Going With The Cptpp?, Christine Mcdaniel May 2023

How’S It Going With The Cptpp?, Christine Mcdaniel

Yeutter Institute International Trade Policy Review

There is no doubt that the United States is losing out on market access. But one of the original goals of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) was for a rules-based trading regime in the Pacific, namely rules not written by China. Thanks to Australia and Japan that seems to be happening even with the U.S. no longer at the helm.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership or the awkwardly nicknamed CPTPP is a Pacific trading bloc that consists of 11 countries, spanning the Pacific Rim, and includes Malaysia and Chile. The member countries represent 13% of world GDP. Once the UK …

Integration And Reaction, Ronald R. Sundstrom May 2023

Integration And Reaction, Ronald R. Sundstrom

Philosophy

D. C. Matthew argues that although integration offers blacks social and economic benefits, it also creates the conditions for phenotypic devaluation that leads to harm against black self-worth and servile behaviour. Therefore, he advises against integration because the resulting self-worth harms outweigh the benefits of integration. I argue that Matthew’s cost-benefit calculation against integration lacks the requisite evidence, and amounts to a luxury belief that will result in more harm. Moreover, his interpretation of behaviour — which he construes as being indicative of a lack of self-worth — is unfounded. Further, his cost-benefit calculation results in socially reactionary sexual policing …

Emotional Responses To Covid-19 Stressors Increase Information Avoidance About An Important Unrelated Health Threat, Christopher Gustafson, Kate Brooks, Syed Imran Ali Meerza, Amalia Yiannaka

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic, like other crises, has had direct and indirect impacts on individuals, many of which have been negative. While a large body of research has examined the impacts of COVID-19 on people’s lives, there is little evidence about how COVID-19 affects decision-making broadly. Emotional responses to COVID-19-related stressors, such as illness and income loss, provide a pathway for these stressors to affect decision-making. In this study, we examine linkages between exposure to COVID-19-related stressors—focusing on temporally specific local case counts and loss of income due to the pandemic—and decisions to access information about antimicrobial resistance (AMR), another critically …
