Sorting By Lc Call Number In Excel, Daniel W. Jolley May 2023

Sorting By Lc Call Number In Excel, Daniel W. Jolley

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

Sorting by Library of Congress (LC) call number in Excel is problematic because Excel does not treat LC call numbers as numbers. In practice, this means that Excel sorts LC call numbers based on each successive digit in the call number rather than the overall value of each call number. (for example, a call number beginning with PS507 would be sorted after one beginning with PS4998 in a default Excel sort). In this presentation, I demonstrate one method for accurately sorting by LC call number in Excel.

“I’M Not Searching The Right Words”: User Experience Searching Historic Clothing Collection Websites, Arden Kirkland, Monica Sklar, Clare Sauro, Leon Wiebers, Sara Idacavage, Julia Mun

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

This study investigates the search processes of users accessing public websites representing historic clothing collections, examining where their searches are supported by the metadata in the collection databases and what factors could make their experience more inclusive. With IRB approval from four universities, we performed a recorded experiment with twenty adults: ten students of historic dress and ten fashion professionals. Four tasks included search scenarios and images representing diverse historic garments. Results indicate that both the descriptive metadata and search features on collection websites present challenges for the typical user search process. Users search for historical dress content the way …

Threshold Microsecond Pulsed Electric Field Exposures For Change In Spinach Quality, Zachary Rosensweig, Abigail Martin, Colin Hackett, Jerrick Garcia, Gary L. Thompson Iii May 2023

Threshold Microsecond Pulsed Electric Field Exposures For Change In Spinach Quality, Zachary Rosensweig, Abigail Martin, Colin Hackett, Jerrick Garcia, Gary L. Thompson Iii

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Pulsed electric fields (PEFs) are often used to pretreat foods to enhance subsequent processes, such as drying, where maintaining food product quality is important for consumer satisfaction. This study aims to establish a threshold PEF exposure to determine the doses at which electroporation is viable for use on spinach leaves, wherein integrity is maintained postexposure. Three numbers of consecutive pulses (1, 5, 50) and two pulse durations (10 and 100 μs) have been examined herein at a constant pulse repetition of 10 Hz and 1.4 kV/cm field strength. The data indicate that pore formation in itself is not a cause …

The Collections Pbi: Interactive Data Visualization For Campus Outreach, Nat Gustafson-Sundell, Evan Rusch, Pat Lienemann, Jeff Rosamond

Library Services Publications

At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we have developed a new approach to collections outreach utilizing interactive data visualization in Microsoft Power BI. The new tool, which we call the Collections PBI, empowers us to demonstrate very clearly and vividly the library's value to campus. The Collections PBI can be used for a variety of purposes, including collection development and collection evaluation, for program review and accreditation. We will demonstrate the Collections PBI and talk about how we are using it to support collections outreach and other library priorities. We'll also discuss design and development issues so others can see how …

The Effect Of Perceived Weight Status And Bmi Perception On Food Attitudes And Food Relationships, Sahil K. Patel, Ryan Gericke, Jaime Dougherty, Adarsh Gupta

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

CONTEXT: Obesity has been a national epidemic throughout the United States due to the increasingly sedentary western lifestyle, paired with calorically dense abundant low-nutritional food options. Discussing weight necessitates the conversation of not only the numerical value (body mass index [BMI]) associated with obesity but also the perceived weight or how an individual categorizes their weight, irrespective of their calculated BMI classification. Perceived weight can influence food relationships, overall health, and lifestyle habits.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify differences in dietary habits, lifestyle habits, and food attitudes among three groups: those correctly identifying as "obese" with …

Dance: A Stimulus For Memory, Emma Rutter May 2023

Dance: A Stimulus For Memory, Emma Rutter

Center for the Arts and Humanities: Student Fellows Program

This article explores the connection between dance education, emotional affect, memory recall and executive function with primary research conducted in California and Colorado. Past studies show that dance interventions improve working memory, increase hippocampal volume, and induce expressive brain plasticity in older adults aged 55+ after beginning dance classes (Teixeira-Machado et al., 2019, Rehfeld et al., 2017, Rehfeld et al., 2018). Other findings show that aerobic exercise induces growth factors that increase neural plasticity resulting in the preservation of cognitive functions. There is limited research between dance and cognitive function in people ages 14-24 years. Furthermore, not all styles of …
