Twice-Exceptional Autism And Home Education: A Phenomenological Analysis, Tiffany Brook Hartman
Twice-Exceptional Autism And Home Education: A Phenomenological Analysis, Tiffany Brook Hartman
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
It is common for autistic and particularly twice-exceptional (2e) children to be schooled from home at a higher rate than their neurotypical peers. Much of the current research investigating this phenomenon is conducted from the perspective of the public school system. This point of view is generally critical of the curriculum taught in the home, has largely limited parental voices in the literature, and overlooks possible circumstances in the public school system that might have led families to choose to homeschool. This qualitative analysis conducted open-ended interviews of parents with twice-exceptional autistic children who have home-educated or currently educate their …

Technology Elective Classes’ Effects On Middle School Students’ Self-Efficacy And Learning Engagement In Science, Rebecca K. Farrell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative design was to examine the technology classes’ effects on private middle school students’ self-efficacy, self-regulation, task value, and learning goal orientation between students in technology electives and non-technology electives. The topic was introduced using historical, theoretical, and societal backgrounds. Further literature review led to a synthesis of the literature investigating technology classes, STEM education, self-efficacy, task value, learning goal orientation, and self-regulation. Further investigations found and synthesized literature that focused on middle school students and their connections to the above topics. The sample for the setting was drawn from 136 participants enrolled in three …
"Praise Him With Instruments" The Successful Implementation Of Orchestral Ensembles In The Modern Contemporary Worship Service, William Armour
"Praise Him With Instruments" The Successful Implementation Of Orchestral Ensembles In The Modern Contemporary Worship Service, William Armour
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite the high demand for contemporary worship musicians to lead contemporary worship services, there remain classically trained orchestral musicians who desire to worship God with their instruments. Biblical evidence reveals, God, who highly values diversity and creativity, desires these traits in worship. Likewise, this evidence suggests God accepts and is pleased with all who offer Him true worship, regardless of their instrument. As such, there must be ways to accept these classically trained orchestral musicians into contemporary worship contexts and utilize them to enhance worship. Based on biblical evidence, industry resources, and music education materials, this qualitative study identifies the …
Religiosity In Drug Use And Addiction Among African American Women: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study, Felice Saleem
Religiosity In Drug Use And Addiction Among African American Women: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study, Felice Saleem
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the influence of religiosity on experiences in Celebrate Recovery (CR) groups for African American (AA) women in Central Georgia. AAs die from drug overdoses at rates that exceed all other racial groups in the United States. Although many treatment options exist, they remain largely ineffective at helping people addicted to drugs sustain sobriety. Religiosity has been shown to influence quality addiction treatment access. The theory that guided this study was Parsons’s classic structural-functional analysis of religious organization theory because it describes religion as an integrated system of beliefs or practices …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This intrinsic case study aimed to understand how the external stakeholders' (ESs) collaboration impacts international students’ enrollment in the College of Career and Technical Education (CCTE) in the North Central United States. The stakeholder theory guided this qualitative case study, based on the philosophical assumption expressed in the ontological assumption taken from the social constructivism paradigm (Vygotsky, 1916). The central research question was: How do the collaboration of the external stakeholders of the college of career and technical education, the alums (international students), and their local community leaders impact new students’ enrollment? The objective was to understand this phenomenon and …
Thriving: Best Student Ministry Practices For Reaching Generation Z Most Effectively, Seth Conner Peterson
Thriving: Best Student Ministry Practices For Reaching Generation Z Most Effectively, Seth Conner Peterson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In 1972, the Jesus movement’s proliferation brought on the professionalization of student ministry into Southern Baptist churches. Over the last 50 years, the U.S. population has increased by 110 million, yet student ministry baptisms in the Southern Baptist Convention continue to decline. Despite recent efforts by The Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee to reverse the downward trend of student ministry baptisms (ages 12–17), the phenomenon persists. The public profession of baptism remains as a strong indicator that an individual has been effectively reached with the Gospel. Operating under this premise that increased baptisms indicate effectiveness in student ministry, the researcher …

Humor comprehension and appreciation are two basic domains of humor research and central stages in humor processing. In the present study, 238 Italian adults rated 20 jokes to investigate how a humor comprehension task influences subsequent funniness ratings. Additionally, the relationships between humor comprehension and funniness were investigated for the total set of jokes, for individual jokes, and for jokes with different contents (neutral or tendentious) and difficulty (elementary or advanced). Comparing participants who performed only the funniness ratings with participants who first performed a humor comprehension task showed that funniness scores were reduced in the humor comprehension condition. Humor …

Simple Combination Of Multiple Somatic Variant Callers To Increase Accuracy, Alexander J Trevarton, Jeffrey T Chang, W Fraser Symmans
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Publications comparing variant caller algorithms present discordant results with contradictory rankings. Caller performances are inconsistent and wide ranging, and dependent upon input data, application, parameter settings, and evaluation metric. With no single variant caller emerging as a superior standard, combinations or ensembles of variant callers have appeared in the literature. In this study, a whole genome somatic reference standard was used to derive principles to guide strategies for combining variant calls. Then, manually annotated variants called from the whole exome sequencing of a tumor were used to corroborate these general principles. Finally, we examined the ability of these principles to …

The Writing Of The War Within: A Study, Analysis, And Creation Of Narrative Reality, Katelynn Wood
Masters Theses
In an in depth analysis of my own work, I study the use of narrative reality and focus on the use of narrative style and strategy in the works of Renée Ahdieh, Khaled Hosseini, and Tim O’Brien to transport the reader from the reality in which they are reading a novel to the reality that exists within the novel itself. I apply the same lens to my own work and specifically hone in on the use of epistolary form to communicate the inner feelings and mindsets of the characters. Through the analysis of the use of this form by Jane …

In Utah, two common tappable maple species are boxelder, sometimes called ashleaf maple (Acer negundo), and Norway maple (Acer platanoides). Both species are abundant throughout the state, with the former primarily found in natural mid-elevation canyons and the latter extensively planted in urban landscapes. Maple syrup is a natural source of sugar and can be used in many recipes to make yummy treats and foods. The best part is that it is relatively easy to obtain and simple to make. This fact sheet reviews the syrup-making process.

Follicular occlusion tetrad (FOT) is a clinical syndrome consisting of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), acne conglobata (AC), dissecting cellulitis of the scalp (DCS), and pilonidal cyst (PC). These entities typically occur independently, but occasionally present simultaneously comprising FOT. The four components share similar pathophysiology affecting the apocrine glands, follicular hyperkeratinization being the hallmark of each entity.Understanding shared similarities of each disease is paramount for the treatment approach as the relapsing and chronic nature of this syndrome can be burdening to patients. We present the case of a 22- year-old obese Hispanic man with a history of tobacco use who presented with …
Brussels Leasing Lp V. Sacks
All Decisions
The tenant refused to give access to the apartment for repairs, and the landlord sought eviction. The court dismissed the case because the landlord offered the tenant a lease renewal twice during the pendency of the lawsuit, without mentioning the eviction case. In the Second Department, a lease renewal can undo a termination notice.
