The Effects Of Music Tempo On Arithmetic Cognition Testing, Heart Rate, And Perceived Stress, Katelyn Allton, Matthew Chapin May 2023

The Effects Of Music Tempo On Arithmetic Cognition Testing, Heart Rate, And Perceived Stress, Katelyn Allton, Matthew Chapin

Applied Health Sciences Student Works

Thirty-one participants signed up for one 60-minute appointment. The participants took four Arithmetic Tests and rated their perceived stress for each test. The first was a pre-test which allowed the participants to practice the procedure, and no results were recorded. The second was the control test with no music played. The third and fourth tests were randomized to include the fast-tempo or the slow-tempo song. The data recorded was time (in seconds), heart rate, test score (percent correct), and Likert Scale score (number from 1-10) following each test. The data was all recorded in a secure, password-protected online excel sheet. …

The authors regret that a small error in the dynamic melting Matlab script used for this paper produced erroneous results for some of the included modeling outcomes. We have written an updated modeling program in python, which can be accessed in the ENKI and pyUserCalc public data repository (https://gitlab.com/ENKI-portal/pyUsercalc/). Although the corrected results shown in revised versions of Figs. S3, S4, S8, S9, and S10 now appear quite different from the original publication, however, we find that when restricted to plausible scenarios of interest, our conclusions overall have not significantly changed. Some details of our results and discussion require corrections, …

Flesh Fly Maggot-Infected Abscess In A Burn Victim Patient In The United States Without A History Of International Travel: A Case Report., Andy Aleman Espino, Erik Aleman Espino, Claudia Aleman Oliva, Gustavo Huaman, Ricardo Castrellon

HPD Articles

This case report describes an uncommon occurrence of myiasis, specifically a maggot-infected abscess, in a patient with reduced skin sensitivity resulting from severe burns. Myiasis is the infestation of live animal tissue by fly larvae, and while it is primarily associated with tropical and subtropical regions, cases acquired within the United States are rare. The presented case involves a 70-year-old male who arrived at the emergency department with an intensely painful, non-healing wound in the left elbow. Upon examination, the wound was found to be infested with numerous live maggots, and subsequent investigations revealed the larvae to be of the …

Communication Faculty Publications

The adoption of service and community-based learning can be a challenge across campus. Some units or departments might embrace the approach while others believe it can’t be done in their discipline. Despite being shown to offer benefits for learning and retention, recruiting faculty participation in service and community-based learning (SL/CBL) can be challenging. This article describes the origination and first two years’ outcomes of a decentralized faculty fellow program (FFP) across six colleges at a metropolitan university. The first cohort of faculty recruited for the FFP were tasked with serving as a resource for fellow college faculty/staff after collaborating with …

Energy Efficiency And Material Cost Savings By Evolution Of Solar Panels Used In Photovoltaic Systems Under Neutrosophic Model, Ahmed Sleem, Ibrahim Elhenawy

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Traditional applications of solar panels have been limited to smaller-scale energy production, such as that required by single houses or apartment complexes. Researchers from all around the globe have been working together to develop creative, efficient goods, increase the energy efficiency of solar panels, and build new, ground-breaking practices using photovoltaic system design. Solar photovoltaic (PV) system planning demands a strategic decision-making approach to socioeconomic growth in many nations due to the rising understanding of the financial, social, and ecological aspects. The primary goal of this study is to provide a novel, adaptable method of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) for …

Leptomeningeal Myelomatosis: An Unusual Presentation Of Multiple Myeloma, Vasu Malhotra, Vikas Malhotra, Kenneth Shain May 2023

Leptomeningeal Myelomatosis: An Unusual Presentation Of Multiple Myeloma, Vasu Malhotra, Vikas Malhotra, Kenneth Shain

HPD Articles

Multiple myeloma (MM) is characterized by the neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells producing a monoclonal immunoglobulin. Although neurological complications are commonly seen in MM, they most frequently occur due to spinal cord compression by bony lesions, paraprotein-related neuropathy, hypercalcemia, hyper viscosity, or amyloidosis. Less than 1% of patients with MM present with a leptomeningeal disease. We present a case of a leptomeningeal myeloma in a 61-year-old woman with known relapsed MM who presented with headaches and dysphagia. We present this case to alert clinicians to keep a high index of suspicion in cases of Multiple Myeloma presenting with non-specific neurological …

Eugene Mazo v. New Jersey Secretary of State

On Petition for Writ of Certiorari to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit

From the Summary of Argument

This Court has expressly held that the Anderson-Burdick balancing test for evaluating certain kinds of election laws does not extend to cases of pure political speech. McIntyre v. Ohio Elections Commission, 514 U.S. 334, 344 (1995). Laws restricting political speech are subject to strict scrutiny. Nevertheless, lower courts—including the Third Circuit in this case— continue to defy this Court’s guidance.

This case presents an important opportunity to …

Pacific Faculty Work

We present results from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Survey on the stellar population parameters for 28 galaxies with redshifts 4 < z < 9 using imaging data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) combined with data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The JWST/MIRI 5.6 and 7.7 μm data extend the coverage of the rest-frame spectral energy distribution to nearly 1 μm for galaxies in this redshift range. By modeling the galaxies’ SEDs the MIRI data show that the galaxies have, on average, rest-frame UV (1600 Å)—I-band colors 0.4 mag bluer than derived when using photometry that lacks MIRI. Therefore, the galaxies have lower ratios of stellar mass to light. The MIRI data reduce the stellar masses by 〈 Δ log M * 〉 = 0.25 dex at 4 < z < 6 and 0.37 dex at 6 < z < 9. This also reduces the star formation rates (SFRs) by 〈ΔlogSFR〉 = 0.14 dex at 4 < z < 6 and 0.27 dex at 6 < z < 9. The MIRI data also improve constraints on the allowable stellar mass formed in early star formation. We model this using a star formation history that includes both a “burst” at z f = 100 and a slowly varying (“delayed-τ”) model. The MIRI data reduce the allowable stellar mass by 0.6 dex at 4 < z < 6 and by ≈1 dex at 6 < z < 9. Applying these results globally, this reduces the cosmic stellar-mass density by an order of magnitude in the early Universe (z ≈ 9). Therefore, observations of rest-frame ≳1 μm are paramount for constraining the stellar-mass buildup in galaxies at very high redshifts.

Writing As A Mode Of Therapy: The Path To Healing And Selfcare, Lolita Joyce Law May 2023

Writing As A Mode Of Therapy: The Path To Healing And Selfcare, Lolita Joyce Law

Masters Theses

When someone is plunging into a deep depression, they may not know what to do with the next moment in their lives. All they do know is that they would like the pain to stop. There are many modes of therapy used to assist people with healing. However, writing for many has the most rewards. It is an expression that allows the individual writing to dig much deeper than any spoken word could allow. Writing can help clear, evaluate, and purge the mind of negative thoughts before it leads to action. Poetry, journaling, and songwriting are just a few methods …

Saving The Superheroes, Jeffrey Lawrence Nickles May 2023

Saving The Superheroes, Jeffrey Lawrence Nickles

Masters Theses

Normal Man is a screenplay about Freddy, a below-average underdog who changes the world with the power of his positive thinking. The thesis briefly explores the psychology of how a person’s perceived self-image could stop a highly qualified individual from achieving their dreams, while an underqualified person with a positive self-image can go on to greatness. Other underdogs are compared against Freddy in order to provide a relatable yet successful protagonist. The Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount are also analyzed to show how the supposed “backward” attitudes of Christianity can save the day.

This study highlights the different aspects of song texts and song structures while also establishing the impacts of an oral/aural tradition. Emphasis was placed on the relationship between linguistics and music, and how one may alter the teaching/learning process of new song materials for students (especially young adolescents). Song texts and song structures were also looked at in relation to culture, and how culture is affected by oral/aural tradition. Specifically, the outcomes of students learning song texts in their native language/tongue versus songs of a different culture was explored. The differences and commonalities of learning music in various styles were …

We Are Your Epistles: How Christian Writers Communicate The Work Of The Holy Spirit Through The Art Of Spiritual Memoir, Ananda E.G. Peters May 2023

We Are Your Epistles: How Christian Writers Communicate The Work Of The Holy Spirit Through The Art Of Spiritual Memoir, Ananda E.G. Peters

Masters Theses

Within the nonfiction genre of memoir lies the spiritual memoir, which emphasizes a divine element at work in the lives of mortal beings. Christian tradition, beginning with the Bible, is rich with accounts of God intervening in people’s lives. By writing and preserving their stories, our spiritual forebearers left behind relics of encouragement and instruction for future generations. This thesis aims to inspire Christians to continue the tradition of preserving personal stories in written form. This thesis is presented in three parts. The Artist’s Statement explains the author’s connection to this sub-genre of creative writing. The Critical Research essay is …

Christianity Worldview In Fiction Writing: History, Comparison, And Understanding, Stephen Douglas Flynn May 2023

Christianity Worldview In Fiction Writing: History, Comparison, And Understanding, Stephen Douglas Flynn

Masters Theses

In researching this paper, the artist learned a great deal about how fiction and popular genres are tied directly to or at least behind the print. First, the research takes a perfunctory look at how the Christian behaviors and, more or less, common morals create what readers know today as a worldview genre, also known by other names. The worldview seeks to present a protagonist who changes something about their view of the world by the end of the story. The paper goes on to look at the Christian worldview from the perspective of religious leaders. While it may seem …

An Analysis Of Nonverbal Communication Behaviors Enacted By Christian Worshipers Of Various Denominations, Holly Alexandria Vasiliki Smith May 2023

An Analysis Of Nonverbal Communication Behaviors Enacted By Christian Worshipers Of Various Denominations, Holly Alexandria Vasiliki Smith

Masters Theses

This study seeks to determine how members of different denominations use nonverbal communication in their worship practices within the Christian faith. Previous studies have looked at specific elements related to music, classified the common behaviors and beliefs of denominations, and provided descriptions of nonverbal communication cues. However, no study has looked at the intersection of these factors. In order to determine how members of different denominations use nonverbal communication in their worship practices, a qualitative data gathering method in the form of an open-ended survey was distributed to 40 participants of a preliminary screening survey, providing 26 responses. Participants were …

All Write Already! Writing Across Curricula: An Instructional Tool In Theater And Dance, Lezlie R. Christian

Masters Theses

Whether it was to clean the barracks or check for foreign objects on the flight line, “All-hand-on-deck!” applied to every breathing body on the ship or in the building; rank did not matter. The same concept should apply to all teachers with writing, elective teachers included. To increase literacy and writing in our schools, all-hands-on-deck is necessary. Professional development on how to insert writing can help. If our young scholars are to be effective communicators, literacy in the arts can help. Do not view writing as an enemy, additional content you must teach. Work it as a tool. This project, …
