A Novel Jazz Music Curriculum For Young Children: Results Of A Pilot Study, Jazmin D. Ghent
A Novel Jazz Music Curriculum For Young Children: Results Of A Pilot Study, Jazmin D. Ghent
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Jazz improvisation is known as the highest-known art form concerning improvisation due to its frequency and development of creative ideas (Feldman 1964). Research shows that the art of spontaneous creation can contribute to children’s ability to problem-solve, social and emotional well-being, and academic success into adulthood (Biasutti, 2017; Heble & Laver, 2016; Kiehn, 2003; Kuzmich, 1980; Solis, 2009). Improvisation is crucial for developmentally comprehensive music programs; however, improvisation is scarce in elementary music classrooms and curricula. For this pilot study, a group of 31 children aged 5-8 and considered at-risk participated in a study where they were randomly assigned to …
Reframing Resistance, Resilience, And Racial Equity In Maternal Health: A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Paternal Involvement And The Racial Disparity In Severe Maternal Morbidity, Marshara G. Fross
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: The preventable, persistent racial inequity observed in maternal and infant death has lasting impacts on African American communities and families. Fathers, partners, and co-parents are important supports during the sensitive and vulnerable perinatal period. Emerging research has begun to demonstrate a concerted effort to move beyond the sphere of medicine and quality improvement, towards exploring and integrating social factors into targeted intervention strategies to address racial inequality in health outcomes. However, sparse literature concentrates on understanding the role of fathers and partners in peripartum care and maternal health outcomes. This study aimed to explore, understand, and describe the role …
Understanding How Cancer Adapts To Stress And Therapy Using Evolutionary Game Theory, Mariyah Pressley
Understanding How Cancer Adapts To Stress And Therapy Using Evolutionary Game Theory, Mariyah Pressley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Adaptive responses in cancer promote disease initiation, progression, and resistance to treatment. Understanding the underlying evolutionary dynamics behind these adaptive responses is crucial for developing effective therapeutic strategies. Evolutionary game theory (EGT) has proven a useful tool in analyzing how different cellular behaviors and evolutionary forces shape the dynamics of tumor growth, response to therapy, and the emergence of resistance. In this dissertation, we utilize EGT to understand the adaptive responses of cancer through the lens of ecology and evolution. By employing fitness-generating models and exploring various ecological contexts, we aimed to unveil critical factors influencing aggressive cell phenotypes, treatment …

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
The student-led fossil fuel divestment (FFD) movement urges universities to remove investments in fossil fuel firms from their endowment portfolios to inspire reductions in carbon emissions and help control climate change. This article explores the movement in U.S.-based Jesuit universities by documenting their endowment size, current divestment status, and rationale for or against divesting. These institutions held a total of US$13.8 billion in their endowments as of 2019, making their investment decisions relevant and material. The article in general examines the alignment of divestment actions with the commitments of Jesuit universities to environmental stewardship and social justice as expressed in …

Walking The Talk? An Examination Of The Investments Of Jesuit Universities In Fossil Fuel Firms, Marinilka Barros Kimbro, Rubina Mahsud, Davit Adut
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This article investigates perspectives that have been proposed as reasons both for and against fossil fuel divestment (FFD), paying special attention to the decisions that universities make concerning investments in their endowment portfolios. Arguments that have been advanced against FFD include its supposedly lower financial returns, lack of direct control over investments, reliance on financial advisors, high transaction costs, the need for market index funds that include the stocks of fossil fuel firms, and the institution’s fiduciary duty to increase returns. Arguments that have been advanced in favor of FFD include satisfactory returns from fossil fuel-free portfolios, risk reduction, the …
Assessing Sustainability Initiatives In Higher Education Institutions, Justin Edric G. Yturzaeta
Assessing Sustainability Initiatives In Higher Education Institutions, Justin Edric G. Yturzaeta
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This study investigates how sustainability initiatives in higher education institutions (HEIs) can be assessed. As educational institutions, HEIs are more focused on the academic aspects of sustainability although many have also made strides to address environmental, social, and governance concerns. One assessment tool, developed based on Hart and Milstein’s (2003) Sustainable Value Framework, looks at the sustainability value of a HEI according to two dimensions: a temporal dimension that determines whether or not a HEI’s sustainability initiatives address either present concerns or long-term goals and an organizational boundary dimension that classifies the initiatives as responses to either the internal or …

Creating Sustainable Business: How Does It Happen? An Exploration Of Motivators & Facilitators In Three Organizational Settings In The U.S., Robin T. Byerly
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Despite the fact that serious concerns regarding the deterioration of the environment and natural resources have been voiced for decades, current business and organizational approaches toward sustainability remain inadequate and substantially unsustainable. An important research question, therefore, has to do with understanding how to make positive behavior more prevalent in the face of many urgent global challenges. Newer business and organizational models that are significantly moving toward sustainability, for instance, serve as remarkable examples of such. What can we learn from them? This study seeks more specific answers to this broad question. How are modern organizations motivated to embrace sustainability …

Start-Up Or Scale-Up? An Approach Through Economic Impact, Joaquín Garcia-Tapial, Manuel Alejandro Cardenete
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Entrepreneurship is considered to be one of the engines for transforming our world and overcoming the diverse nature of global challenges as it promotes sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, higher levels of productivity, technological innovation, full and productive employment, and decent work for all peoples (United Nations, n.d.). Over the last decade, however, this belief has been shown to be flawed given that the typical start-up is not innovative, creates only a few jobs, and generates little wealth. Policy makers are increasingly focusing as such on the so-called scale-ups, or start-ups that have experienced growth of more than 20% …

Many experts agree and believe that the COVID-19 vaccine is the best way to control the COVID-19 pandemic in a sustainable manner. Each type of vaccine has different side effects and effectiveness. Meanwhile, information regarding the relationship between the type of COVID-19 vaccines and side effects in real populations, especially in Indonesia, is still limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between COVID-19 post-vaccination side effects and COVID-19 vaccine type. From April to June 2022, a cross-sectional quantitative study will be conducted in Bekasi City, West Java, Indonesia. The population consists of all 1,885,014 residents of …

Rapid And Efficient Computation Of Cell Trajectories During Ultrasonic Focusing, Charles F. Babbs, Mary V. Lang
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
This biophysical analysis explores the first-principles physics of movement of white blood cell sized particles, suspended in an aqueous fluid and experiencing progressive or standing waves of acoustic pressure. In many current applications the cells are gradually nudged or herded toward the antinodes of the standing wave, providing a degree of acoustic focusing and concentration of the cells in layers perpendicular to the direction of sound propagation. Here the underlying biomechanics of this phenomenon are analyzed specifically for the viscous regime of water--as opposed to air--and for small diameter microscopic spheroids such as living cells--as opposed to large diameter, macroscopic …
