Advancing American Chestnut (Castanea Dentata) Restoration Through Science, Gis And Partnerships, Tyler Riendeau Jul 2023

Advancing American Chestnut (Castanea Dentata) Restoration Through Science, Gis And Partnerships, Tyler Riendeau

All Theses And Dissertations

The American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was once a prominent hardwood species of the eastern United States forests. From Maine to Alabama, the chestnut provided many ecosystem and economic services to wildlife and humans alike. After an accidental importation of chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) from Asia, billions of American chestnuts succumbed to the disease. Since the 1980s, researchers have been working to develop a fungal blight-tolerant chestnut in hopes of restoring the species. By the early 1990s, Dr. William Powell and his fellow scientists at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) successfully …

Psychology

Emerging adulthood (EA) is a critical stage of life to develop and sustain a healthy lifestyle, which is also a time of vulnerability to poor physical and mental health outcomes. In this study, we conducted a path analysis (N = 1326) to examine associations among four dimensions of EA, levels of regular physical activity (PA), self-control, MPA tendency and irrational procrastination. Results found: 1) higher levels of PA predicted both MPA tendency (β = −0.08, 95% CI: −0.11 to −0.06, p < 0.001) and irrational procrastination (β = −0.01, 95% CI: −0.17 to −0.008, p < 0.01) indirectly via self-control; 2) Instability (β = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.08 to 0.18, p < 0.01) and Responsibility (β = −0.06, 95% CI: −0.10 to −0.08, p = 0.03) exerted direct effects on irrational procrastination and Instability also indirectly predicted irrational procrastination via MPA tendency (β = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.05, p < 0.01). These findings proved that perceived features of EA are linked to behavioral problems and supported that regular PA plays a crucial role to protect mental health. © 2023, Tech Science Press. In Praise Of Reconciliation: The In-Court Settlement As A Global Outreach For Appropriate Dispute Resolution, Cesare Cavallini, Stefania Cirillo Jul 2023

In Praise Of Reconciliation: The In-Court Settlement As A Global Outreach For Appropriate Dispute Resolution, Cesare Cavallini, Stefania Cirillo

Journal of Dispute Resolution

A sense of crisis in the administration of civil justice is widespread. Whether the typical difficulties faced by many countries unfold in excessive costs and delays, they have stark implications for the effectiveness of the procedural systems and access to justice. Several new institutions evolved to deal with this state of crisis. Amongst them, the judicially-led settlement, which has the peculiarity of being an alternative tool, despite being performed in the courtroom, made inroads worldwide. However, the pro-adjudication rhetoric raised and continue to raise severe qualms of parties’ coercion and judicial partiality resulting from the judge’s dual role as conciliator …

Telomere attrition is one of biological aging hallmarks and may be intervened to target multiple aging-related diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease related dementias (AD/ADRD). The objective of this study was to assess associations of leukocyte telomere length (TL) with AD/ADRD and early markers of AD/ADRD, including cognitive performance and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) phenotypes. Data from European-ancestry participants in the UK Biobank (n = 435,046) were used to evaluate whether mid-life leukocyte TL is associated with incident AD/ADRD over a mean follow-up of 12.2 years. In a subsample without AD/ADRD and with brain imaging data ( …

Adolescent Brain Development And Crime: Why New York State Should Increase The Age Of Criminal Culpability To Twenty-One Years Old, Julia Patz Jul 2023

Adolescent Brain Development And Crime: Why New York State Should Increase The Age Of Criminal Culpability To Twenty-One Years Old, Julia Patz

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that New York State should increase the age of criminal culpability from eighteen to twenty-one years old, aligning with scientific evidence on adolescent brain development. It contends that the current age threshold is arbitrary and unsupported by research, which shows that brain development, particularly in areas responsible for decision-making and impulse control, continues well into the mid-twenties. The note advocates for this policy change to improve outcomes for young offenders and reduce the harms caused by adult incarceration.

Federal Agency Perspectives And Funding Opportunities For Weed And Invasive Plant Research, Stephen L. Young, James J. Kells, Vijay K. Nandula

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Weeds and invasive plants know no borders and have collectively impacted many ecosystems worldwide, including croplands, forests, grasslands, rangelands, wetlands, and riparian areas. Losses continue to mount, affecting yield and productivity, species diversity, and ecosystem services, with both short- and long-term repercussions on the sustainability of plant and animal communities and the livelihoods of many. New and emerging invasive plants, along with many of the most intractable weeds, have undermined even the best control efforts, serving as a reminder of the constant need for improvements in science, application, and technology. One of the main reasons for the success of weeds …

Amyloid-Beta Protein Concentration Dependence Of Reversible Aggregation Using Gold Colloid Particles, Renee Spencer, Lila Kocieniewski, Bryan Martinez, Kazushige Yokoyama Jul 2023

Amyloid-Beta Protein Concentration Dependence Of Reversible Aggregation Using Gold Colloid Particles, Renee Spencer, Lila Kocieniewski, Bryan Martinez, Kazushige Yokoyama

McNair Scholars Program

Although Alzheimer’s and COVID-19 are different diseases, the commonality between them is during the process of them developing in a person by fibrillogenesis. The product of fibrillogenesis results in the development of these diseases. We study the first stage of fibrillogenesis where the amyloid-beta peptide monomers are assembled into an oligomer. We want to isolate this oligomer using gold colloids because this step can be reversed. Utilizing gold colloids allows us to freeze fibrillogenesis in the first step by folding and unfolding the protein repeatedly through a series of pH changes from 4 or below to 10 or higher. At …

Decreased Moderate To Vigorous Physical Activity Levels In Children With Asthma Are Associated With Increased Traffic-Related Air Pollutants, Juan Aguilera, Soyoung Jeon, Amit U. Raysoni, Wen-Whai Li, Leah D. Whigham

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

People with asthma, particularly young children, are more adversely aected by trac emissions-and regular exercise reduces asthma symptoms and improves lung function. We studied the relationship between air pollution and objectively measured physical activity in children with asthma who were attending a school near a freeway. We continuously monitored air pollutants-PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3)-at the school for 10 weeks and measured physical activity levels via accelerometry in children (n = 12, ages 6-12 years). Concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 were negatively associated with moderate to vigorous physical activity (PM2.5 and PM10: p < .001; NO2: p = …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

We observed negative and positive δ18O and δ2H deviations from fluids collected at Kamaʻehuakanaloa (previously known as Lōʻihi) seamount relative to Pacific seawater from the same depth. Hydrothermal vents on the crater floor of Pele's Pit at Kamaʻehuakanaloa, at a depth of 1320 m, had δ18O and δ2H values as low as −0.19‰ and −0.3‰, respectively. Seawater collected within the caldera, within a zone 45 m above the crater floor, had δ18O and δ2H values as high as 1.15‰ and 6.5‰, respectively. In comparison, Pacific seawater at 1200 m and 1400 m at nearby station ALOHA exhibit intermediate δ18O and …

The Effect Of Resource Quality And Species Interactions On Dermestes Maculatus, Sarah Aliahmad Jul 2023

The Effect Of Resource Quality And Species Interactions On Dermestes Maculatus, Sarah Aliahmad

Student Theses

Forensic entomology is the use and application of insect information in legal matters, particularly in death investigations as insects utilize decomposing remains as a food source to complete their life cycle. Dermestes maculatus (DeGeer), larder beetles belonging to the family Dermestidae, are of considerable forensic importance since their larvae are typically found on human corpses during the later stages of decomposition – the advanced and dry/skeletal stages. Dermestes maculatus can be useful in estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI) of a cadaver with advanced decomposition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the colonization (egg-laying) behavior of D. maculatus; …

Medical education is more than just providing up-to-the-minute medical knowledge and clinical practice. It is an art that involves designing             a teaching program that serves the needs of                   the healthcare sector and community in the near future (1). Iraq is a country that has been facing numerous challenges in the healthcare sector, particularly in medical education. Proper medical education could be one of the contributing factors to improving health care in this country (2). A combination of governmental and private universities facilitates the provision of medical education in Iraq. While both types of institutions serve an important role, public universities …
